i was thinking today as i looked at a picture of something why do the 4 best friends have nick names i know that they made the marauders map but does it tel you ion any of the books how they made the map and how did filtch get it and then fred and george stole it in poa also i was thinking bout the nicknames moody is lupin obviously i think coz hes a wearwolfe and he turns into one at a full moon, wormtail pettigrew because he turned into a rat and had a tail like a worm padfoot sirius oz he turned into a dog and they have padded feet if you know what a meen but why prongs for james wat it a prong any way is it something to do wif harrys patronus and why did harry say he saw his dad across the lake wen sirius nearly died.

Well harry says he seen his dad because he believes that his dad was powerful enough to conjure the patronus. James is nicknamed prongs because of his patronus/animagus being a stag(I forgot which 1).

The 4 friends created the Marauders Map whilst they were in school and was obviously confiscated when they were caught by filch. Fred and George then stole it from filch's office and then gave it to Harry in PoA.

Moony: Lupin is a werewolf. Thus he transforms at the full moon, hence the name 'Moony'.

Wormtail: Pettigrew was a rat, and rat's tails resemble worms.

Padfoot: Sirius was a dog. Dogs have padded feet.

Prongs: James was a stag, which have antlers.

James was called Prongs because he turned into a stag, and stags have antlers.

I do not know how they made the map, but there is obviouly a spell. As to how Filtch got hold of it, I think he probably convascated it. But Filtch didn't know what the paper was. In PoA I think it said that Fred and George stool the map from Filtch office in their first year.

Harry thought he saw his dad across the lake, because Harry had gone back in time with the time turner, and because Harry looks so much like his dad, harry thought that he saw his dad cast the patronus that save him - it was actually his future self.

I would have thought that it was obvious Lupin is Moony becuse of the Moon werewolf thing, James is Prongs because of his patrounus. And Wormtail (traitor) is because of his tail.

I think that they gave themselves nicknames because of the animals they turned into when they were animagi. And maybe they didn't want anyone to know who they were if they lost the map or it got confiscated.

As well as the connection with their animagi/werewolf forms they would have thought it'd be a cool private joke, where people would know of it but not have a clue what they were for

I see that you have gotten your questioned answered. So I will take it one step farther. The whole reason why they learned how to transfigure was to be with Lupin when he turned into a Werewolf. As humans they couldn't be around Lupin when he turned but as their animagus they could hang out. As far as them having nicknames, yeah sure it goes along with their animagi but it could also be that they were just teenagers being teenagers. Teenagers give each other nicknames.
