One character that I expected to see at some point was Fawkes. Either to save Harry from an AK or deliver some sort of message, but alas he was a no show. Are we to than assume that when he burst from the tomb at the end of HBP that he died with DD?
Potters Phoenix
I don't think that Fawkes died with DD. I read somewhere that Phoenixes are only loyal to one master/owner. Therefore when DD died, Fawkes was set free. I also remember reading that they are not usually easy to train/keep as a pet, and they are quite rare.

I to was a little disappointed that he didn't show up during the final book, but I think that JKR made it quite clear in HPHBP that he was gone for good. Oh well. He character still lives, but not in Hogwarts or the surronding area. My Avatar show him, because I love Fawkes.

Hope this is clear, tongue.gif

I thought of this while i was reading and though during the will chapter that he was going to inheret fawks. Then i remembered the scene after Dumbledore died when harry heard the music stop and knew that the phoenix had left the school just as Dumbledore had.

In HBP it said -
QUOTE
And he knew, without knowing how he knew it, that the phoenix had gone, had left Hogwarts for good, just as Dumbledore had left the school, had left the world...had left Harry.

Which has to mean Fawkes left and would never come back. We know that if a Wizard can train a Phoenix, it will remain faithful to him and be a brilliant pet, but what's to keep it in the Wizards house/rooms/whatever after he has died? Nothing. Harry didn't tame him. And Fawkes helping Harry in CoS is nothing. He only did it because Tom Riddle was threatening Harry, Harry proclaimed faith in Dumbledore and so Fawkes helped him out. But then DD was alive and Fawkes was his pet. Since DD is dead Fawkes belongs to no-one and has no obligation to help anyone.

JK said in that questions and answers thing that the reason that Fawkes wasn't in DH and never returned to the castle was because something significant had to leave Hogwarts forever when Dumbleddore died and she just chose that thing to be Fawkes.
I had thought about Fawkes being passed on to Harry and him then becoming Harry's pet and I think it would have been quite cool and I'm sure he could have helped Harry and the others a lot but what JK says goes I guess!

i'm sorry DD but i thought that fawkes was your horcruxafter i knew that you were fighting for the greater good with uncle gellert and now i think that after dd died fawkes went far from hogwarts to show that dd was really gone

This bird it’s bloody brilliant I wood like to have one of my one if they exist it but they don’t so ….. But anyway I thing the bird if DD haze a really important part in this book it wasn’t for the bird Harry will be death in Harry Potter 2 because of the sneak but life go one

Yeah HP#1_wee_lil' i read that to. I quess it's true really because the big thing that could give Harry comfort was Fawkes. Knowing that the phoniex was apart of Dumbledore. I quess it showed how so much darkness there was to it. And the flame of the Phoniex had left with Dumbledore.
As much as i'd liked to have seen Fawkes againm. I think it was right to take him away.

I think that JK has just gotten soo into the books that she couldn't include every little thing.
That would have been interesting..like if Fawkes swallowed the curse and then Harry's spell killed Voldemort.
Well that was kind of dumb but you get the general idea. biggrin.gif

i agree with the person before me (sorry forgot the username) JK had a lot to put in the book and couldnt possibly include every minor detail. i dont think fawkes was significant enough to be in the book compared to everything else that is there. also fawkes was a devoted pet and when his master was killed and took from him he didnt want to serve anyone else. but fawkes being harry's pet would have been cool!

I think as it says in HBP at the end "and Harry knew, not even knowing how he knew, that Fawkes was gone gone from Hogwarts for good." It said something like that in the book that made me think that Fawkes was really gone and that he wasn't going to come back for the 7th book.

It's true that JKR made it clear he was gone for good in HBP, but I'm still surprised we didn't see him. I thought she mentioned Fawkes playing a vital role in DH?
Felix2090
At the end of HBP, it said that Fawkes had left Hogwarts the way Dumbledore had. I'm not sure what this means. It could be either that he was set free from Dumbledore and Harry, or it could mean that he died. The first one is more likely.

i agree with Potters Phoenix. i think i've read somewhere that phoenixs are only loyal to their one master and once dumbledore died fawkes disappeared probably never to be seen again by any that had actually known him.
jayden.payne
yeahh. i heard about that too. happy.gif

but i wish that DD had passed Fawkes to Harry. Coz Fawkes always liked Harry. So if you get what i mean... it would of been good rolleyes.gif

i remember before book 7 came out people had theroies on what would happen i remember there being one about fawkes returning to help harry or for him to belong to harry so once hedwig died and then readin the will i was just waitin for it to say harry got the phoenix...i was kind of dissappointed that he never but i can see what everyone sayin but still it would have been nice to see him in action one last time....wonder were he went when leavin the school what hes up to know lol.?
sockr24
yea there was a rumor going around that harry was going to get a new pet and a lot of people, including me, thought that it was going to be fawkes so harry might be able to be transported inside hogwarts and other places without having to apparate.

In lots of fantasies, when a wizard has tamed a creature of any time he has that creature's complete, unwavering loyalty, and when the wizard dies, the creature leaves. It is like that in A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Leguin, when the current Archmagus of Rok is killed. The mage's pet raven disappears almost immediately after his death.

Somewhat likewise with Fawkes. It's a way to mark the master's death and make it more meaningful, that the wizard, or the old mentor, leaves nothing behind but what he taught.

Gah! I totally expected Fawkes in DH! And didn't JKR say he would play a great role in it or something? I understand and agree with the whole loyalty thing, it makes sense that he would disappear when DD did. But I always thought... it's just been bothering me, because I thought that JKR had said he would play a great role in DH. Maybe it's just me. I wouldn't mind have seen him, though, I'm a bit... undecided whether I wanted him in DH or if it's better that he's gone with Dumbledore because of loyalty.

I don't think Harry would have gotten Fawkes as a pet! It just seems unrealistic. Not right. I mean maybe if Dumbledore had arranged for Harry to 'inherit' of Fawkes, but that apparently wasn't planned. And Harry would probably have left Fawkes where he belongs. Fawkes had been with DD long enough that he couldn't get himself a new master. Either he was free or he stayed with DD.

phoenixes are only loyal to one master so i guess that when Dumbledor died, Fawkes was free

I guess Fawkes' absence from the seventh book was to show Dumbledore's absence. If Fawkes had returned it would have made most people think: 'Now that Fawkes is back I bet Dumbledore'll be back too'. I'm only speculating but as Fawkes left when Dumbledore left, if Fawkes came back it would probably make many people think Dumbledore would come back too, which JK i guess didn't want to do, as Dubledore really was dead and gone from the real world.
