Part 1
Chapter 1: Unexpected Surprises
“James, James, time to wake up.” a soft voice said in ten-year-old James Potter’s ear. James opened his hazel eyes and looked right into someone’s emerald ones. Ten-year-old Lily Evans was standing next to James. James sat up and ruffled his messed jet black hair, while looking at Lily’s auburn hair. Lily left the room as James stood up and looked around. His twin bed was tucked tightly in the corner, a wardrobe stood in the opposite corner while his desk was next to the head of his bed. James walked to his wardrobe and threw on some clothes. Since it was summer time, James and Lily both didn’t have school, and they happened to be best friends. Lily’s parent took a trip to France, so she stayed over at the Potter house.
“Good morning James.” called James’ mother, Scarlet Potter, from the kitchen when James sat across from Lily at the table. Mrs. Potter came in seconds later with two plates of breakfast, putting one in front of James and Lily.
While James was eating he was thinking about the fact that Lily and he wouldn’t see each other again. Since the Potter’s were wizards and Lily’s family wasn’t, James was going to the wizard school, Hogwarts, next school year. James had finished eating and stood up with Lily to go outside and walk around. James had considered telling Lily that he was a wizard, but he didn’t. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to but it was against the wizard law. Muggles weren’t allowed to know of the existence of wizards. Lily had noticed that James was barely talking and said something about it.
“I’m sorry Lils, I was thinking about other things.” said James.
“Like what?” asked Lily, curiously.
“Um,” James started. “Just the next school year.”
“Won’t it be great?!” asked Lily, she always loved school and did especially well. James nodded his agreement. “Oh, I almost forgot. What do you want for your birthday?” Lily asked. James had completely forgotten his birthday, which was in a week.
“I’m not sure, still having you as my best friend?” James replied without thinking.
“Why wouldn’t I still be your best friend?” Lily asked curiously as they turned to the next street.
“Because I won’t be going to the same school as you.” James said looking down at the pavement. James and Lily had been best friends since they could walk. And they had gone to the same school their whole lives. It also helped that James and Lily lived right next to each other.
“Your not?” Lily said, half shocked and half sad. James was afraid of this.
“I’m not, sorry.” James said as they approached the park. James walked up to a swing and sat down. Lily just leaned against the pole holding up the swing set, and stared off into space. “Are you okay?” asked James after a while. Lily sighed.
“I’m fine, I just can’t believe your going to a different school, how far away is it?” she said.
“Up north.” answered James, since Hogwarts was unplottable, no one knew for sure where it was.
“I could still see you after school right?” Lily asked hopefully.
“No, you won’t. It’s a boarding school, I will be back for the holidays though.” James added quickly when Lily looked, if possible, even sadder at losing her best friend. James stood up and walked up next to her. For only being ten, James was quite tall. Lily closed the gap and hugged him tightly. James hugged her back, thinking that he should just tell her so that he didn’t have to be sneaky about it.
“Lils, I should tell you something.” started James when Lily let him go. “You probably wouldn’t be able to go to my school.” Lily looked confused. “Because... because my family are wizards.” James said, closing his eyes, waiting for Lily to laugh at him. He opened one eye slowly than the other one. Lily looked at him shocked.
“Are-are you really?” she said serious. James looked at her wide-eyed, not daring to believe what she had asked. After a while he answered.
“Yes. Every young witch or wizard get’s a Hogwarts letter at the age of eleven. That is when you normally start performing magic accidentally.” Lily’s eyes had gotten wider and wider as James went on. “Are you okay Lils?” asked James, thinking that he had scared her. She closed her eyes and shook her head. Only when she looked back up at James, and stopped shaking her head, did she answer.
“I’m okay. It’s just that... well, odd stuff has been happening. Just before my parents left for France, my sister Petunia was climbing the tree in our yard, and she feel. I was so scared because I couldn’t do anything and because I thought that she would get really hurt. But somehow she slowed down, and she landed on the ground like nothing happened.” It was James’ turn for his eyes to grow wide. Lily was performing unrestrained, under age, magic.
“Lils, this means that you could be a witch!” said James happily. Lily just stared at him. “We should head back.” James concluded. They both started walking toward the street and back to James’ house. When he opened the door, James stepped in to see his mother, wand out, cooking in the kitchen. Lily was right behind him and Mrs. Potter had heard the door, so she quickly put her wand in her pocket.
“Lily knows mom.” James said as they closed the door behind them. Mrs. Potter looked alarmed.
“That still means that I can’t perform magic in front of her, she’s a muggle.” replied Mrs. Potter.
“But I think that Lils might be a witch.” James continued. Mrs. Potter really looked alarmed at that.
“How do you know?” she asked.
“Lily saved her sister when she fell out of a tree.” James said excitedly.
“Well, Lily, when is your birthday?” Mrs. Potter said.
“July 2.” Lily answered a little nervous.
“Well then, if you are a witch, you should get your Hogwarts letter on your birthday.” replied Mrs. Potter. James nodded to Lily and went upstairs. Lily followed seconds later. James sat down and beamed at Lily.
“What are you happy about?” Lily asked sitting next to him.
“That you might go to school with me.” answered James, smiling into space. Lily smiled also, but she had to wait two more weeks to know for sure.

James’ birthday came on June 27th ; which was a big deal. Lily had been staying at the Potters’ for two weeks now. James woke up and got dressed. He quietly made his way down to the kitchen, thinking that he was the only one up. He put one foot on the landing and jumped back as a big chorus of “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” greeted him. He smiled at his mother, father and Lily. There was a small stack of presents on the kitchen table. James walked over to it and pulled out the one on top, which was from his parents. He opened it and out fell new quidditch gloves. His father, Andrew Potter, had been a seeker when he had gone to Hogwarts. He unwrapped the second one, which was from Lily. She had gotten him a little figurine of a person on a broom. It was a muggle object since it didn’t zoom around the room like a wizard figurine would. James looked up at them.
“Thank you so much.” he said, hugging his parents and then Lily. Mrs. Potter got up and walked to the kitchen, bring back plates of pancakes for everyone. Once they were finished, a barn owl flew in through the open window and landed on the back of James’ chair, holding its leg out for James to take the letter. He untied it and the owl flew off.
Dear Mr. Potter,
We are please to inform you that you have been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. We await your reply by owl no later than July 31st. Enclosed is all your school supplied that you will need, and your ticket. Term starts on the 1st of September.
Sincerely yours,
Deputy Headmistress
Minerva McGonagall
James looked up at his parents and gave the letter to them. They read it through and smiled at James.
“James, this is great news.” said Mr. Potter. James beamed and got up, putting his dishes in the sink. Lily did the same and soon they were out of the house and walking down the street.
“Was that your Hogwarts letter?” she asked, interested.
“Yeah it was, I got accepted.” James replied. They had reached the park again and saw a boy around their age with oily black hair and equally black eyes. He scampered off as they approached him. They both just looked at each other and continued to the swings.

The week flashed by and soon it was Lily’s birthday. Which was much awaited by Lily, since she would find out if all the weird stuff she had been doing was magic. Lily unwrapped all of her presents, which consisted of a photo album from James, with pictures from when they were little to a week ago. A story book she really wanted from Mrs. and Mr. Potter. Her parents were going to give her their own party when they got back. A snowy owl flew through the window and dropped a letter at Lily’s feet. She bent down and opened it. It said the same thing as James’. She smiled from ear to ear at the Potters’.
“Lils! You got in?” asked James happily as she nodded frantically. She threw her arms over his shoulders and hugged him in joy.
“Well, this means that you have to tell your parents, if they don’t want you to go, then you can’t.” said Mrs. Potter sadly. Lily wasn’t too worried since her parents would want her to pursue her dreams. James and Lily spent the rest of the day in James’ room, talking about what James’ parents had told them about Hogwarts.
