Is anyone going to go see the movie? I am, but I wish I knew what it was about- I have never actually read the books because I wasn't interested, but knowing that Jim Carrey is in it, is the best! He is probably my 3rd favorite actor [besides Dan Radcliffe + Orlando Bloom]. Oh, yeah, Liam Aiken is going to be in it as well. He is SO cute! Did you know he tried out for HP and barely made it? He looks like Dan, and looks like he could take his place if Dan decides to leave. [Which I hope he doesn't.]
Anyway, it just looks like a really great family movie. I am for sure seeing it.

i'm probably going to see a series of unfortunate events this saturday, and i can't wait... but it's not as exciting as going to a harry potter movie
the books are scary and unique... but sometimes i feel too sorry for the Baudeliare children that i want to cry

I'm going to see the movie at some point next week and I can't wait. The movie is only of books 1-3 though, which makes since, I mean the series isn't even finished yet. Jim Carrey will definatly be hilarilous as Count Olaf.
The books are amazing. I love them. I've read all of them except for the one that just came out (because I'm broke at the moment and the library never gets new kid books) inculding the UnAuthorized Autobiography. Not only are the books good but I like the entire mystery surrounding the books. Also has anyone else looked at the dedications?

i've read all the books (1-11) but i don't think the movie could ever match upto the books! They're just so hard to act i guess because they're so complex(to me). And a smuch as i love Jim carrey he's more of a comic count Olaf not at all like the one in the books...

I saw the movie a couple of days ago. Overall it was pretty good. The scene where Aunt Joesaphine's house collapes was really good. They didn't stay completely true to the books but it was still alright. One complaint is that Count Olaf (Jim Carrey) didn't seem like the murder and crazed, greed driven mad who could kill children without a second thought, which is how he is portrayed in the books. Not that didn't like it, Jim Carrey was hilarious as Count Olaf.
I thought it was smart of Nickelodeon to end it like they did, now they have more of a choice on wheather or not to make a sequel.
I thought it was kinda funny that the author of these books (Lemony Snicket, a.k.a. David Handler) is American and in (my guess) his 40s and in the movies he is played by Jude Law who is British and very good looking

.
Did anyone else realize that Mr. Poe was played by Timothy Spall (who also plays Peter Pettigrew in the HP movies)?

Yep, I did...I pointed him out to my nephew, who didn't believe me though...
Overall, I did enjoy the movie, I have to say...I started reading the first book a while ago and just couldn't get into it, but the movie made it a bit lighter (I know...sounds kind of ironic, doesn't it?) And the kids were brilliant in it, especially the baby....must be a nightmare to try and make a film with kids as young as that.
All that being said though, I really didn't like the whole wedding thing. And I wasn't the only one who came out of the cinema thinking that the whole scene had a very creepy paedophilic overtone.
The letter from the parents at the end was very poignant and touching...had a bit of a lump in my throat there...
Maybe it was the forensic scientist in me, I dunno, but I sort of guessed what was causing the fires right from the beginning, which made it a little bit predictable for me, but nevertheless, I did enjoy it.

I saw it a while ago, and really like it. I've read most of the books, so I was curious to see how they would make them into a movie, and if it would take away from the tone of the books if they did.
Happily, the tone of the movie was very close to that of the books. Yay! I love how they had Lemony Snicket narrating it, and only showed the profile shots of him.
The biggest thing that I didn't like was the person who 'looks like neither a man nor a woman' in the books. In the movie, he/she was dressed as half man and half woman. The costume was really cool, but I didn't think it fit.
It was a good movie to go see, and they did a good job on it. I'm thinking they'll make a sequel, and try to buy into the Harry Potter phenomenon.

I personally liked the movie and though I know it wasn't exactly true to the book, I liked the adaptation of the story. I mean Snicket's vision vs the director's vision are two different things but they stem both from 3 kids in series of troubles who together overcome them.

I read the first 3 books that the movie was supposed to be based upon and I reckon the movie turned out about as good as it can be.
Think about it people. Compressing 3 books into 1 movie is no easy feat. I highly doubt any of us could have done it any better.
For those of you who have been here long enough, y'all would know that I am a very active and passionate defender of the HP movies.
I feel exactly the same way for this Lemony Snicket's movie too.
To me, I felt the director/screenwriter did a great job within their means. As in, the decision was to compress the first 3 books into 1 movie and they worked accordingly within that.
Of course it would have been nice to see them in individual movies, but think abou it. It's just not feasible. Not only is each book not thick enough to stretch to a standard 90-minute movie, but there are flippin' how many books in the series? More than 10 right? From a budget standpoint, it would make more sense to combine few books into one.
The movie captured the right SPIRIT of the 3 books. All the significant events that happened were depicted in the movie. And I thought the ending was awesome, weaving in the value of family into the story. Brilliant.
I thought Jim Carrey played Count Olaf very well. Who else could have played a schizophrenic/multi-character role better than he? And of course the 3 kids were brilliant too. Good choice of casting, in my opinion.
Have a little more faith, people. The crew behind this movie are, after all, experts in their field.
And it won a couple of awards too...that must mean something.
This is all IMHO, of course. Just me two-cents worth...

I think the Movie was pretty rubbish. They mixed up the plot and took away important bits and added even worse bits like the train bit. and they cant do the miserable mill because Klaus needs to have glasses to go to the opticians to be hypnotised. But if i hadnt read the books, i would of thought the movie was goodMOD Edit: Please be careful of your language. This is a family board and is open to people of all ages. I loved the movie and I liked the performing that Emily Browning (Violet Baudelaire) made...
Most of all, I like the music they had. The last music, in the credit, it's just so melodious (sp?) and interesting, not to mention good...
Jim Carrey has always made me laugh (The Mask, Bruce Almighty, etc) and he will always do...
The movie has good values such as perseverance (sp?), unity, hope, happiness, family and so...
It's really a movie worth to be seen...

I can not beleive I have not found this thread before now. I am the hugest SUE fan. Between that and HP, well...
The movie bugged me in two ways, they pronounced Klaus Klows (that may be right but I don't care, I pronounce it Klaws, rhyming with oar) and HE DID NOT WEAR GLASSES!!! Thsat seriously bugged me, but I still bought the DVD. And I don't think Violet looked like Violet at all. But other than that it was great. I espeically loved they way all the stuff Aunt Jo warned about came true like the fridge squishing them flat, and the doorknob exploding and all. I thought Jim Carey made an awesome Count Olaf. He had the mad actor thing down perfect.
The books! Oh where to start! I love I love I love! I love in the Ersatz Elevator he used two black pages to describe the falling down the elevator shaft! Although the Beatrice thing seriously winds me up. Who is she? WHO??? I have many theorys, each as ludicrous as the last. My latest one is that Lemony Snicket is a skitzaphrenic and is half Beatrice, half Lemony. Yeah, I know. Well, we know she isn't the Bauldilaire mum, or his sister so who else?? ARGGGG!!! Can't wait for the next book. And the sugar bowl! What is it? Why is it in a taxi with Lemony Snicket with Beatrice in the back (Ok i'm guessing here) Why did Lemony snicket deside to play the Accordian? So many mysterys...
Oh, and what do people ship? Personaly, I'm a Violet/Duncan Klaus/Isodora but I'm not that one minded about it...
