Like probably everyone else, when I read the last chapter of Deathly Hallows I stopped myself and said... HUGO?
Well I think I know why J.K Rowling did this. I heard that the meaning of Hugo was important. I looked the name up and it said that Hugo meant:
Bright in mind and spirit
Now, going back to Hugo's parents, you have Ron and Hermione. Hermione is extremely smart and clever. While, Ron has a very good sense of humor and always tries to lighten the mood.
Now, it should make perfect sense why J.K. Rowling used Hugo.
Ron + Hermione = Brains + Sense of Humor
Brains + Sense of Humor = Bright in mind and spirit
Bright in mind and spirit = Hugo
Hope you like my theory and PLEASE comment!
Thanks<3

Yes, that does make sence, but neverless Hugo? I mean isn't there another name that is similar in meaning, but nicer? I wonder who thought of the name. Was it Ron or Hermione? Personally I think it was Hemione, she would be one to look up names and find meanings for them, to have the "perfect" name for her baby.

i like it and i wouldve thought its exactcly what jk did
sorry to go off topic but then why did they call there little girl Rose?
EmStar202
Aug 16 2007, 03:06 PM
Alright I looked up "Rose" and this is what I found,
ROSE
Gender: Feminine
Usage: English, French
Pronounced: ROZ [key]
In part it means simply "rose" from the word for the fragrant flower (derived from Latin rosa). However, it may have originally been a short form of names beginning with the Germanic element hros meaning "horse".
Ok since I don't think J.K. would make Hermione name her kid because she thought the name meant "Horse," so I think that she just named her that because she liked it, or she likes floweres.

It seems like Ron would have named the girl Rose anyway. That doesn't sound like something Hermione would pick out. Hugo, that makes sense with Hermione's characher. Poor kid though. Hugo.

I actually don't think that Hugo is that bad of a name. Just like most people I did stop when his name was mentioned and think "What?", but now, it's grown on me. It actually sounds good together 'Hugo Weasley'. Much better than having to say 'Albus Severus Potter' which sounds like just a bunch of names put together with no apparent meaning.
I like the meaning of his name, Hugo. At first I thought that JKR just used it randomly because I remember that there was an award that she won, called the Hugo award, and I just thought that she used it because of that reason. But I'm glad that there was more meaning behind it. Now, it completely makes sense.

I also looked up the name Rose and it said that Rose meant, well a rose..lol
I think, like EmStar202 said, J.K Rowling might just have liked the name. Also there's 19 years that are missing out of the books, so it could mean anything really.
And Thanks for all the comments!

Not everyone Hugo meets would research his name..the poor,poor,kid...

I heard from another forum that the name is a tribute to Victor Hugo. The name Victaire or Victoire (sorry, I forgot which...or if that name is even mentioned in that chapter) is also some sort of tribute to him. For more information on, look

I think Ron named his son Hugo, because...well, doesn't it kinda sound like Ron named him? And I guess Rose was named by Hermione.
Personally, I don't find anything wrong with Hugo's name. In fact, I think that it's cute ^^ And Rose is a nice, pretty-ish type of name.
But, anyway, 'Albus Severus'??? Honestly...doesn't make sence, I don't know why Harry named him Albus Severus. By the names of Harry's kids, I don't think Ginny named a single one, because Harry named the kids after those who died in his life. I personally think he should have named his daughter Molly instead of Lily, because it would kinda make Ginny happy.
'Nuff said.

i think all the names have some symbolic effect on them. like albus severus potter... none of us would name our kid that but harry named him that for the sentimental value, two hogwarts headmasters... so people saying about the meaning of the names and so on i think are right... just my thoughts

Yes, I agree, I thought also this when I first read the epilogue. But the theory about the meanings seems quite interesting. It would be great to ask JK about her reasons
And it's more likely that Hugo was chosen by Hermione if we consider the meanings as well.
Did anyone read an interview with JK about this?

I think that the names for the children where very appropriate. Although, I have a partialy biased opinion. You see, my name happens to be Rosemary, but I go by Rosie. At first I wondered why Hugo wasn't Fred or Sirius or Lupin someone else who died, but then I released that Bill, Charlie, Percy or Goerge would have used those names. I bet Goerge has a son named Fred.

I've got to say that it all makes sense now why J.K. decided on naming their child Hugo (great theories, guys!). But to me, I just look at it as a perfectly awkward name for an awkward couple. They are, obviously, perfect for each other, but Ron is awkward. I mean, come on. He's a red head, tall and gangly, and with a big nose. It only seems natural for him to have a son named Hugo, because I tend to picture the same awkwardness. Also, the wizarding community doesn't seem to pick out "normal" names, so Hugo is not far from the norm: Remus, Sirius, Severus, Albus, Aberforth, Dedalus (sp?), Minerva, etc. If anything, Rose is out of the ordinary. But I have to say the more I think about it, the more perfect Hugo seems. I"m very partial, however, considering I love everything Rowling does.
That being said, I'm not the biggest fan of Hermione Weasly...I hope she kept her last name, it just sounds so much better in my head.

well,I'd like to say that "Hugo" and "rose" are rather common first names in france, and I've read somewhere that JKR once studied french and was very interested on it.so i guess that she MIGHT have been to france and heard those names and found they sounded nice...or maybe Victor Hugo is her favourite writer
Plus I remember hermione mentionning her trip in france..in Dijon.Maybe she fancied those names...Well,enough patriotism!

I like the theory, it definitely fits. But Hugo was definitely not a name that I as expecting, when I first read it, I was a little taken back. I mean Hugo that to me just does not fit with a name that I would have put with Hermione and Ron. But now that you have told me what the name really means, like I said before it definitely fits.

albus severus: two good men who had a big impact on harry's life
lily:harry's moms name
james:his dads name
i think that harry and ginny wanted to keep the names of their kids grandparents alive somehow.
hugo: a name that hermione probably picked, who was probably a famous person in history
rose: a simple name that ron probably chose, because it sounds nice

Okay, this might sound silly but I always think about 'Hugo Boss', when I hear the name 'Hugo'...
And.. well, Hugo Boss is in fact a fashion house and obviously has nothing to do with our magical witchcrafting world ... but then again, Hugo Boss is also popular for its perfumes
And perfume makes me think of Ron's christmas present to Hermione in OotP...
So maybe a very farfetched inside-joke?
Doesn't make sence, I know

I also agree with the Ron - Rose and Hermione - Hugo thing, giving their kids the first letters of their own names. Rose is also a more common name like Ron's while Hugo is an uncommon name like Hermione's. Hugo is starting to grow on me now, at first when I read it I did say why Hugo? But think about it if we hadn't spent 7 books with Hermione and just read the name Hermione most people would say Hermione? Why Hermione? But we're used to it and it's grown on us...
That being said...I know Lily (Harry and Ginny's daughter) was named after Harry's mom but both Harry & Ginny's and Ron & Hermione's daughters are named after flowers (Rose and Lily)...

Or, it could be that naming one of the kids Hugo is Rowling's way of saying thanks for the Hugo award. Now the Hugo people are immortalized in print.

I don't know i think it's the fact it could get confusing two Harry's.

And i think J.K wanted to include thosse characteristics. You said Harry was thier best buddy, though he still is afterall. So i think prehaps it would have been a good idea to name him Harry if Harry Potter had died. In sort of like meomery and in tirbute. But i think Hugo's ok really.

What would be so confusing? R/Hr would be honoring their best friend by having named their boy Harry. Besides, the actual "Boy That Lived" is older and probably getting a few gray hairs on top of his brown hair, while the younger Harry (R/Hr's kid) most likely has red hair (he's a Weasley after all, right?). One's best friend doesn't have to be dead for us to name a child after them. It's similar to giving a father's name to his son (i.e. a Jr.) Papa isn't necessarily dead.
IMO, Hugo is an odd name in todays society. Maybe not so much in France!

Yes I watched that, it was really sweet when she said that to the little boy. She explained some of the names she gave like Victoire but I still really don't Hugo. They may have named their son Hugo for the French author Victor Hugo, the writer of 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' and 'Les Misérables'. Considering Hermione has probably read those books. They may have also done this because Hugo means heart, mind, or spirit, and the name has a lot of religious meaning. And Jk Rowling is religious so this may be a way to incorporate her religion without getting all of the accusations.

Maybe it was because when Hermione was pregnant Ron kept wanting to Hug her so they just added on the 'o'!
Or maybe because in some countries it means intelligent and Hermione is the eternal optomist!
Or maybe, he's was genetically concieved...HUGO = Human Genome Organisation!!
Personally I agree with 'No George Without Fred' I think JKR has a sense of humour and named him after the HUGO award which was won by GoF a controversial choice as the Hugo normally went to works of science fiction and fantasy as opposed to children's fantasy.

In my opinion, Ron named Rose and Hermione named Hugo. Why? Hermione just seems like the type of person who'd want to name their child something rediculous but Ron would have to step in. Not something Luna-rediculous, but just an odd name. Hugo i don't see as a bad name-i quite like it, actually. It seems Weasley-ish to me.

i dunno, at first i absolutely hated it, but it seems to have grown on me just a bit. i still hate it but its more like i've gotten used to it. i've shortened it to hugh, cause a nick name always sounds less dorky than the original even if it is just as dorky.
and, going from what people were saying on the first page, i think hermione chose hugo's name. it just sounds like a name hermione would think was absolutely brilliant while everyone else looked at her as if she was mad. it's a smart girl thing

(and hermione would've done the research to find the 'bright in mind and spirit' thing so that sort of puts it as a cert. ron wouldn't research anything let alone names. though i found this out after i decided it was definitely a hermione-ish name)
and i'd like to think that ron named rose, simply cause its a nice name and ron deserves a lot more credit than he actually gets. and it's a pretty name and ron would like that, i think hermione would've agreed though (but she would've liked Margret better. haha!)
bit off point here but i also think that ron would've got the whole 'parent' thing better than hermione would've. being a mom isn't really something you can learn out a book. and i think ron would be a sort of natural.

what Hermione's parents are called?
Did JKR ever mention if Hermione found her parents

to call her children after her parents just like Harry.
Anyone?
Well whatever the reason, Hermione chose Hugo,
it's just so Hermione-ish.
