Hi,
I opened this poll again.
Somehow, my old one vanished! Funny. biggrin.gif
Anyway, I am just wondering about you HP readers.
When I started reading HP was when I was about 5 or 6 though I didn't understand most of the words JKR used in the book. I wasn't very interested I think. But I just kept reading them because I am only child and I was bored. Skipped most of the words I dodn't know.
Anyway, please leave a comment if you feel like smile.gif

I have changed the ages a little on your poll options to take account of the varied ages of the VTM members (Ithink the majority are older than 16).

It would be interesting to know why you are interested in this information. Always when someoen opens a poll, I wonder why the topic starter wants their particular question answered, so I think it would be nice if you told us your reason.

Also, I deleted the 2nd question in your posll as we already have a thread open about rereading the HP series.

Personally, I was in the 30 - 40 catagory when I first read HP...it wasn't published until I reached that age, but I'd have read it earlier if JKR had written it wacko.gif

I was 10 when I read the first book. It was just published and I was the first who read it from the library. Funny, the way you remember such details tongue.gif
Chica16f
15-20. I read the first book when I was 17. SIlly isn't it?
Gwenog
I was 12...it was my birthday present after I watched the first movie...I was really disapointed first when my parents didnt buy something I liked..lol..how wrong was I... within a few hours I lost it and was a huge fan... happy.gif
Looney_Loo
I remember my grandma reading it and when she finished reading it, she gave it to me.

Anyway, I was just wondering how many people of my age read Harry Potter.
I only know one person reading Harry Potter in my year at school. I want to talk about it but he hasn't finished reading all of the series and (of course) he doesn't want me to spoil it for him.
So I wondered if people on VTM read Harry Potter when they were about my age, I can complain about it to those who don't read (not brutally but I mean try to persuade them).
If people read HP and majority of them are older then me, I can't complain.

Does that made sense? Yeah...anyway, it was a pretty long explanation.
And next time I add another poll, I'll explain why smile.gif

I read the fifth book first. I don't know why. Hehe. I wasn't able to finish it, though. I think it was last year. But, just this year, I started reading the fifth book again and finished it. Then, I read the sixth, then the first, the second, third, and fourth. I started with the fifth. Weird. Anyway, I turned thirteen this year. So, yeah. tongue.gif

I was 10 years old when I first read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I'm now 15...So it's been five years. I got into the Magical world then and have been stuck there with Harry Since the very beginning! magic.gif

I was around 15 years old when I started reading it... around 1999.... At first I didn't like it. I got it as a gift from my mom and left it on my nightstand for several days. Then one day I got a hold of it and then I couldn't stop until now!
The wait for the last three books was almost unbearable! And I went through periods from completely loving it up to almost forgeting about Harry... Now I've decided to stay on his side for good! I'm even a MOOOP now! Hahaha! I just love it!

When I first heard of HP I was *thinks and counts on fingers* 12 but I hated it! Every time anyone would mention HP I was like *groans* shut up already!
Then when I was 16 I was all out of reading material. I had read and re read everything in my house and since I hadn't found any good book stores near my house and I wasn't in the mood to read a book in spanish, I saw my little brother's GoF book lying around getting dusty. As I looked at it I heard the voices of all my friends ringing in my head... *makes echo voice* Read it Stef, you'll like it... Don't be a git...
So I took the book and began to read. I didn't let go of it until i finished which was in 2 days (I even took it to school). Then I saw that someone had lent my sister the OotP book and I started on that. So yeah that's how it all began. only 4 years ago more or less.

Ahh.... good old memories... I can still remember how I started to like Harry Potter, and how old I was.... I was about 8 or 9 years old, I know I was in the 3rd grade in school, so...
I have to say that the Harry Potter world has really changed my life! Before I was pretty bored and had nothing to think or use my imagination through with passion and love, with other words: I didn't liked any books so much as I liked (and still do) the HP ones. Of course, I liked some other books by then, because they were putting us to read all sorts of classic children books, and yeah, I was liking some of them.... But when I've started to read Harry Potter!!! Woow, I was mesmerized, and I can still remember how impatient I was for the next book to come in the libraries. laugh.gif

I was 14 when I started reading Harry Potter, shortly after seeing the first movie (which was in 2001).

Before, I thought it would just be another silly children's book... but then I saw the movie and my gosh, was I wrong!

This was the moment for me to step away from my prejudices and start reading the books.

I'm so glad I did, Harry changed my life. It feels so weird now, knowing that the story has ended. sad.gif

Don't worry, I'm even weirder in that aspect:

I started with the 1st movie, then the second book, third book, first book, fifth book, sixth book and finally seventh book.

How's that tongue.gif

Silly me pinch.gif !

lancelot243
I was 11, and I was in 5th grade. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was on a boll order list that we used to get in elementary, and my teacher recommended it, so I ordered it, and I loved it!!
Lauren0891

Gawd it was so long ago! Umm.. I think it was just as I turned 8 that I really got hooked on it.. so 8 years ago that was! biggrin.gif

When I first read it, believe it or not I hated it! I thought it was rubbish! But I reread it more carefully (I was only really skim-reading it before) and then I bought the second book and the rest is history I guess!

Anna:)
10-15 probably,I started to read Harry Potter books when I was 10 or 11(something like that).I read it all the day and night!
Lily_Potter
I don't remember exactly what age I was. I do remember being in junior high though. It's funny, I thought I was the only one reading HP and then one day in class during reading time I look up and there were like 10 people reading Sorcerer's Stone lol.
Luna♥Lover
I was seven when I first saw the movie, so I thought I'd read the book. It was very boring for me, because it included stuff not in the movie! But when I was nine, I decided when I was re-watching the Philosopher's Stone that I was going to read the books.I had the first one already, so I began that night. I finished four chapters in ten minutes! The next day, I told my mom that she needed to get me the next couple of books (she was shocked!). In case you're interested, here's how long it took me to read the books the first time I read them.

When I was nine

PS - 2 1/2 days
CoS - 3 days
PoA - 3 weeks (Watched the movie after I started reading, and re-watched it until it made sense, then I continued)
GOF - 2 weeks
OoTP - 1 1/2 months (got very bored, so took a long break!)
HBP - 2 days

When I was eleven

DH - 8 hours, 16 minutes!!!

I was 11 when I first read Harry potter...the fun thing is I started out by reading Chamber of Secrets !!!My mom had bought it for me, and since it doesn't have numbers or anything, she thought it was the first book, and so did I, until my friends proved me wrong.

I can still picture myself sitting on the floor, in front of my small bookshelves in my old bedroom, taking my brand new Chamber of secrets and opening it...funny how these things mark us...

I first read Harry Potter when I was about eight. My father's a librarian, and he introduced it to me not long after it was first released.

To me, it was more or less like I grew up with the characters. I was seventeen, almost eighteen, when Deathly Hallows was released, so I was the same age as Harry. Maybe that's why I'm so fond of Harry Potter. wink.gif
HighFlyer
I think I was either 19 or 20. I can't really remember.
I just know I read them all over the summer within like a month.
Nasuada
My mom started reading the books aloud to my siblings and me when I was ten. We had been looking for some good books to read aloud and a friend of ours suggested the Harry Potter books. At the time, only the first four were out. Haven't stopped reading them since! biggrin.gif
lixie
i was 14 when i frisrt read it.
and it wasnt the first book though
haha
it was book 4
ForWhatItsWorth
Haha I was 6 or 7 when i started reading them. We had gotten these book order things from school and my mom kept trying to convince me to get Captain Underpants lol but I kept persisting in wanting to buy Harry Potter, and then I remember I was reading it in school and I was like the only one and all the other kids were like shocking.gif I can't believe you're reading that.
Lol. Good Times.
winky456
What am i the only one on this entire site to have read them under five? Com'on that's sad. really, pathic on my part. But hey i'm advanced every thing at school.

I was 12. I think if I'd been too much older (say above 15), I might've not enjoyed it at all. It's such a children book (though I've read many better ones) in the sense that it's all very simplistic, contradictory, illogical and unstructured. Something you can stand being inflicted on you when you're young and ignorant and submissive, but which is plain unbearable when you get more mature. The three last books, which were precisely published when I was over 15, I only read 'cause I wanted to know how the story went on. Skipped a lot of passages, though.

Hmmm, I first started reading the HP series when I was about 12 years old and just entering middle school. I had heard from so many people how wonderful they were, but I was skeptical. But seeing as I am an avid reader of any genre, I decided to give it a try. Then I got hooked! haha I was amazed at J.K.'s writing of the first book and immediatly went out and bought all the books that were out. Now I'm sixteen, and own every book, and read them back to back at least 4 times a year! ohmy.gif
The Master of Death
I started Hp at the age of 8 after watching The Sorcerer's Stone Movie. I read Chamber first. Then Goblet Of Fire. Then Prisoner Of Askaban. Than Sorcerer's Stone. Then Order. Then Halfblood. Then Deathly Hallows. I was 12 when i read Deathly Hallows
Amyrat151
I was 15. I remember hearing about the books when I was in elementry school, but it didn't seem like my kind of thing, I had enough obessions at the time.
bookworm_1918
I think I started it in first grade, didn't get, and then picked it up and loved it since second grade. So how old? Probably 7 or 8 years old. Most likely 8.

Harry James Potter
I started the series when I was 10 years old and continued all the way through. Now I'm 18 and still love the series. I think it's best when you pick up the series close to 11 because then you grow up with the series at the same age as Harry.
Crookshanks_ize
I was 19 wen i started reading the books...it was GoF already in the movies... I watched before i read the books...it's kind of late here in my country...i think HP1 book was out on the market just after the movie became a big hit already..and i bought the 4 books at the same time, which made it more exciting for me, and a complete torture for me as well... I had 4 books to read in a hurry, don't really know why was i in a hurry (excited, i suppose) and still have studies at the same time..
nicky potter
i first started reading it in the 4th grade. but i didnt read it in order . ust one book out of order .
i did watch the movie thats how i was introduced to it . then i saw my friend had the book one day in class so i was iintrested. i go over to my cousins house & i see that they had the goble of fire but of course it was a waste of money to them since they dont read . so i took it [more like stole it for awhile] lol & i read it . i liked it . unfortuently when i returned it they ripped the book in my face *torn inside* later on before i started 6th grade i saw that one of the harry potter books was in my list so i went to barnes and nobles bought the 5th & he first 4 came in a set for $24 (: so i read them in order. although i skipped the 4th . i already knew that one & yea, lol i was 9 when the movie came out & i was still 9 when i read the goblet of fire but i read them all in order at 10 [a few months before 11] (((:

I was about 8 when I read the first HP book. I must have looked strange sitting there in second grade with a book that looked way too complicated for me, but I think I understood most of it and enjoyed it a lot. It wasn't until I went back and reread the series that I thought "wow this was really really good".
padfootx3
I was 8 years old. I actually read it right before the first movie. Before that my sister and all her friends had read it and now i'm obsessed and have read all of them several times and shes never gotten past GoF. Funny, huh? I think my love for HP has increased as I got older though
LoonyLovegood
I was nine. My mom gave me the first book for Christmas.
Stian
I remember my dad bought be and my sister the second and third book. I was 8 at the time, I think. We read them as bed-time stories, and we started with book 3 (having no idea what Harry Potter was about), then book number 2. My sister and me had a fiery arguement regarding the books we had read. She thought book number 3 was book number 2, and vice versa. I dissagreed! Then, after a while, I bought the first book - and from 4 to 7 I read them in the proper order. blink.gif
Padfoot4Ever
I got them for my 11th birthday. Coincidence? Haha..Anyways I got them when I was 11 but it took me a good two years to read the first two. I didn't get into them right away..but once I finished PoA...I was hooked! biggrin.gif
I think I was on the second one when I heard about the movies and that made me more interested and pushed me to finish it. I wanted to know the books for the movie.
malfoy-luver-4-lyf
I Was 8 And I Got The 1st Three Books In A Set For My Birthday. I Didnt Understand All The Words So My Dad Read Them To Me And I Didnt Really Like Them ( shocking.gif Shocking Isnt It ) When I Was 10 I Read Them Again And Fell In Love With Them biggrin.gif
The Happy Dementor
When I was six. I had to wait a bit for the fourth one and being as young as I was i got very impatient but still the wait was worth it. biggrin.gif
CarribeanWitch
I was in my twenties when I started reading HP. It was great, although the reason I started reading them was because of the movies. Although, I really liked the movies I fell in love with the books instantly. The books are just so wonderfully detailed.
Bryssa
i was 13 years old when the first time i read my first harry potter book,..and now i'm 21 years old...
alyweasley
I was 11 when I read it first. My class teacher was reading Philospher's Stone out to the class and I couldn't wait until she kept reading it so I went to the school library and got it out. Read it in a day, by the end of the week, I had all four I think! I think that's all that was out by then.
nox_mors_magnetic
I started reading it when I was like... 10... Maybe a year younger... biggrin.gif
harryjpotter
I first read GoF when I had just turned 13. GoF was the first Harry Potter book I read and it was round the same time when PS came out in the cinema. Funnily enough my older sister had read PS in 1997 when it first came out, She read one of the first ever copies which had been given to our school along with other books to see how popular it would be with kids. I wish I had started earlier, it was 4 years into Harry Potter that I got completely obsessed but I am proud that I have been a dedicated fan for more than half the time that Harry Potter has been in publication. And I am also proud to know that I will be a fan for the rest of my life.

Afterall, once a true Harry Potter fan, always a Harry Potter fan which I am sure some of you will agree with if not most of you
PotterIsTheChosenOne
When the first movie came out, I read the first book but it wasn't until last year (2008) that I actually fully read GoF, OoTP, HBP and DH. I actually reread them all after I read DH for the first time because I LOVE THESE BOOKS!!
KahlanRahl
When the first film came out, I watched it out of curiousity. I started to read the books right after that.
FollowTheSpiders
Well, I was somewhere between five and six when I read 1-3, but my dad read the first chapter of the 4th one and it scared me so I read that when I was seven or eight...

wow... I get scared easily...
Tonks718
I was 12 (i am now 13) I finished the last book back in May. Before i read the first book i remember telling my aunt that i thought Harry Potter was stupid when she told me i should read them. but a while after that i went into my little brothers room (who claims he's read the 1st book. but i don't believe him. he's 9) and started reading the first book... and i couldnt put it down! so i went back into my brothers room and took the other 3 Harry Potter books he had in his room and put them on my bookshelf. When i was reading the 5th book i finished it at 8:45 at night and i forced my dad 2 drive me 2 the library 2 get the 6th and 7th books. the funny part is that the library closes at 9:00pm! but i only live 2 minutes from my library so it wasnt a problem. :-D
