In the first book, Draco basically asks Harry to be his friend. If Harry did say yes, what do you think would have happened? Do you thnk Voldomort would have welcomed Harry or gone after all of draco's family as well. It's something to think about. I wonder what would have happened.

of course! i don't really think that draco was really trying to be friends with harry...just kind of proving that he isn't evil since he's friends with the savior of the world...and like the saying goes: keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer.

Also, since Voldemort didn't care about friends or anything like that, he wouldn't really care about who Harry was friends with. Plus throughout the books Voldemort liked the Malfoy's less and less.

i have to say i was watching the first movie last night as i fell asleep and i though of that same question. it always seemed to me that draco was probably acting on his fathers wishes and keeping harry close. i dont think that mr malfoy knew of the proficy or what it said at that point but he did know harrys "story" so he probably told draco to befriend him on the off chance the dark lord would return and want him. it is just like lucius to teach draco to be evil we witness it throughout the series and he is always lookin for a way to please the dark lord he was sort of a suck up looking to benifit himself.

That makes sense. I guess lucious would want to be able to just hand over harry if voldemort did come back. thanks!

Another side to this is that Draco did want to be Harry's friend to feed off his fame and glory. Also to the main question I don't think it would have made a difference to him - look what he did to Lily..

I believe there was this one time, I think it was in GoF, where Voldemort actually asks Harry to join him... I'm pretty sure that actually happened, but I'm not sure in which book.

Anyway, I think things would have been different, it would have been another Regulus Black kind of story, because Harry would not have liked all the things Voldemort did, and of course, Draco would have earned some points on Voldemort's side, but we should all remember Draco's and Harry's tempers don't get along, so maybe they would have grown appart after a while...

I think it would have made a big difference, but maybe, in the end, Voldemort would have ended trying to kill Harry again, all because Voldemort cannot stand someone as equally powerful as him.
