OK, I've been thinking a lot about this myself but I haven't got a clue what you think so...
Personally, I don't want a new guy composing the music for DH.
Ever since I saw OotP I'd love
Nicholas Hooper to do it, 'cause he can really put emotions into the music. I listened to the soundtrack today and "Possesion" and "Another Story" makes me cry, "The Flight of the Order of the Phoenix" gives me an amazing flying-feeling, and "The Ministry of Magic" is just great.
Patrick Doyle made the music for GOF, which had a "big" and majestic feeling but lack of emotions. "The Story Continues" (the intro theme) is one of my personal GOF-favourites. I actually gasp every time I hear it 'cause it's just so wonderful and you can really hear that the movies are getting darker. I also like "The Dark Mark" (it's catchy).
The music for the first three movies was composed by
John Williams. He made "Hedwig's Theme". I love it. As a true HP-fan you have to love "Hedwig's Theme". He also made the music for Jurassic Park and the Schindler's List Theme, but that's not the point. The point is that he is very skilled.
The only one except these three that (in my opinion) would fit to make the music is
Howard Shore, who made the music for the LOTR movies. He's incredible.

Well, Well, Well. I have been waiting for someone to create this topic. Well, personally, I would like John Williams to return. He created all of the music for the first three films, and without that, the other people wouldn't have had anything to base their music off of. Hedwig's Theme is one of my favorite songs ever, because it fits the series perfectly. I love it. He should return.
About Patrick Doyle. I don't like him because he changed the original Hedwig's Theme. It had been very good, until he came in and butchered it. It would be a perfect theme if the movies were called Tom Riddle, but it's not. It's Harry Potter, the leader of the GOOD side. The only thing he did that I liked was the Quidditch World Cup. It is very catchy and fun.
Finally, Nicholas Hooper. He is alright, although I haven't bought the OOTP soundtrack so I don't really know that much about him. He didn't seem to change Hedwig's Theme to much from the GoF one, but I guess he did sort of change it back to normal. At least it didn't seem as dark.
But from what I heard, none of his tunes are very catchy, and I am not so sure about him returning for HBP either.
I hope it's John Williams.

Nicholas Hooper all the way. He and Evanna Lynch seem to be the first two long-term fans involved in this movie, and that scores big points in my book. I loved the OotP score, too... one of the best parts of the film for me. I don't know what the tracks are called, but I loved the music in the scene with the Advance Guard where they were flying down the Thames. The fact that they were flying down the Thames at all seemed a bit cheesy to me, but if it had to happen, it couldn't have happened to a better score.
Of course John Williams would be great as well -- I'm a huge John Williams fan, he scored some of my favorite movies and I listen to his soundtracks all the time -- but I've always found that a lot of his music sounds kind of similar, and I like having a really unique sound for the Harry Potter movies. I mean, let's face it, Hedwig's Theme is pretty good, but the track for the Quidditch match in SS could have been written for Star Wars or Indiana Jones just as easily as Harry Potter. With Hooper there's no question of what he's writing for.

I think anyone who could put emotion into the music could do a great job, but to be able to do that and be a fan would be incredible. Without having to be a fan, Nobuo Uemetsa (summat bike that, did the Final Fantasy X Music, beautiful) being a fan, one of the three mentioned at the top

If the composer can do the story justice, then I'll be fine with whoever does it. It is not about who the composer is, but how they compose the music. There's a rumor going around that John Williams might return for Deathly Hallows. He may have done well with Sorcerer's Stone, but if he returns, unless he changes the tone of his music a bit and makes it one heck of a lot darker, then it is not suitable for Deathly Hallows. If he doesn't do that, then he's no good for Deathly Hallows.

Oh! Dear, this is not hard question for me. Nicholas Hooper for sure! Why? Here:
- I loved his music. It's simply amazing and I fell in love with the soundtrack as soon as I got the DVD. I listen to it all the time!
- The movies have grown a little darker and more mature, and Hooper was excellent at making music for the last one, a sort of introduction to that darkness. I don't know what the others would be like, because they all had more... 'little Harry Potter goes to Hogwarts!' kind of music, so I have no idea what they are capable of. But I must say- Hedwig's Theme is still a classic!

- It doesn't have to be one who comes back of course! It would make sense for someone else to come. But I agree with The Writing On The Wall, we need someone who can put emotion in the music and really give us a good sense of what's happening and what kind of mood there is. Once again, I think Nicholas Hooper was fantastic at the job.

I love the idea of Howard Shore entering the world of Harry Potter. He did such a wonderful job on LOTR and the themes he created were just perfect for the plot, perhaps he would do something similar fpr Hp.
I also like the idea of having John Williams back on the job as well. Having him create the music for both the first and the last films would give the entire series a feeling of completion and coming full circle musically.
I also loved OotP music but I don't think that Nicholas Hooper would be right for this one. His music does have the abillity to create emotion but I'm just not quite sure that his style would be right for DH.
I would have absolutely no objections towards Patrick Doyle coming back at all. Having his music come back from the start of the war to the finish would also give the series a sense of finality. His big themes and magestic music makes for good listening.

I really hope John Williams comes back and finishes out the series. I think Nicholas Hooper was awesome, but since Williams started it all, he should be the one to end it with a bang. I found it interesting that even Nicholas Hooper said in an interview that John Williams should come back and finish what he started. Let's see what happens!

John Williams definitely! He created the Harry Potter theme song! I think he did the best job. I really didn't like whoever did the Goblet of Fire and I really wasn't too pleased with whoever did the Order of the Phoenix. I hope John Williams finishes the series!

I have to admit I do prefer John Williams, especially PoA.
For those of you who appeared to be a bit confused:
Patrick Doyle composed the score for GoF, and Nicholas Hooper composed the score for OotP. It looked for a little while at least that Nicholas Hooper would come back for HBP as David Yates uses him a lot for his films. But I also suspect that the sales figures for OotP soundtrack were probably not as good as those for PS, CoS and PoA.
I would love John Williams to come back, especially if he manages to score something as original as PoA. PS and CoS were more similar to each other than to POA, with the exception of Hedwig's Theme of course. I don't think either Patrick Doyle nor Nicholas Hooper did Hedwig's Theme any justice at all.
Bring back John!

I hope JW does the music, seeing as how i love his work in the first three, which is really cliche since he's so popular, but some of the stuff he did for harry potter was epic, but i also like orchestra/band music because i'm a big loser

so it's just an opinion. Hooper wouldn't be bad either

I think John Williams is amazing but he really suited the beginning films because he has a very bright, wondrous style of composition. I believe DH needs something a bit more dark and perhaps kooky.
My favourite composer is Hans Zimmer and he could do it but I feel he might make it a bit too epic.
I love it when films have really different soundtracks like Fight Club had the Dust Brothers do this weird, innovative soundtrack. Also, I enjoyed Babel's with just the guitar playing with such passion, it's really a contrast to William's and Zimmer's symphonies.

I think Nicholas Hooper would be a good choice for DH because I loved all his soundtrack in OOTP especially when fighting in the ministry it gave it that upbeat but very frightening feel to it. Which really was what the movie was a mix of but yeah as DH is arguabley the darkest one because of so many terrible things happening I think Nicholas Hooper would be great for it.
Though John Willames was very very good could he pull of the later movies... I don't know wouldn't it be great if they got all of them to compose different parts. Espically as there are two DH movies now.

I think it's rumored that John Williams will be returning for DH. On
SnitchSeeker this post was from 2007 that said Williams was confident for his return to DH.
But I actually liked Hooper on OOTP and am looking forward to what he does with HBP. I would be happy if it was either Hooper or Williams.

I think Philip Glass should do the soundtrack! His music is so different and full of fantasy. Or perhaps Karl Jenkins whose epic compositions would be the right tone for the film. I think Paddy Doyle was a good choice though, as was Nicholas Hooper. Perhaps Klaus Badelt who did Pirates of the Caribbean which was then stolen by Howard Shore should have a go, what does anyone think?

I didnt like the sound track Nicholas Hooper did for Prince. I want to see John Williams back for these two. He is a world renown composer and he did an awesome job with the music for Stone. I personally want to see what new ideas he can come up with for DH. If he does it i think it will be fenominal!

I don't really care one way or another... I wouldn't know any good guys to list off that would fulfill what the directors are looking for. I don't really pay attention to the background music and I'm not going to like go buy the tracks on itunes or anything like that.
