Full Version: Was Ootp Too Long?

time turner
For me, the longer the better, especially if it is Harry Potter. I wish that all of the books were that long, because that would mean more time reading, and I love reading. Alsp then we would know alot more about Harry.
EmStar202
I liked the lentgh! It's one thing if a book is boring and long but ootp is long and AWSOME! It's my favorite out of the serious. And for the people who hope the 7th is longer than it, sorry to say but I think I read somewhere it was shorter! sad.gif
Gia Malfoy Black
It wasn't long at all. As a fact I would've loved if all the books of the HP collection were that long.

The only problem with books that long is that the paperback versions are somehow uncomfortable to read.
Medea
It was not too long. There are important information in the book, and I think one of the most important part is the conversation between Dumbledore and Harry after Sirius' death. The book is so rich in details and tells us about things that today young people sometimes forget. Youth sometimes forgets how powerful they are. The book also talks about some types of educational approach which are not useful to students. And other subjects. Thus, the book was not too long. If I were asked which book was too long, I would say, The Goblet of Fire. Some parts are kinda boring, unnecessary.
crazy4u
Well,it was one of the biggest books I've ever read but the more, the better, right? It was very enjoyable and the many pages contributed to this so...It wouldn't be the same with less pages.Sometimes I think that there are more details than necessary especially at descriptions but whatever...
UnknownLocket
The Order of the Pheonix too long? Of course not! It was too short. I would love if every Harry Potter book was as long or even longer. There actually as no such thing as a book that is too long especially one that is soo good. If JKR wanted to make a book with 109,040,034 pages, I would still read it.
Lauren0891
Nope it definately wasn't too long. No Harry Potter book could ever be too long - the more there is to read the merrier! biggrin.gif
I think that the longer the book is the more details are in it so it will be better. By cutting it down you just cut out details that help to explain the book.

chocolatemaiden
ootp was definetely not to long, it was probably the book that needed the most explaining and the most detail, there was also a lot more then happened in the book and anyway why would any harry potter book be to long theyre all so amazing, im kind of upset that JKR is finally done with the series cause i just finished deathly hallows and now i just stop and think, wow there is never gunna be a new harry potter book again
darkhen
I think, as i presume many will agree, the longer the better!
Mrs Longbottom81
For some reason, I never realize how long the Harry Potter books are. Maybe it's because I love them so much. If I read another book that was 800+ pages long, I would've said it was too long. But I don't think OOTP was too long, I love when JKR goes into a lot of detail. I definitely agree that OOTP needed a lot of explaining, so it was good that it went into a lot of detail so readers could understand everything. It was absolutely one of my favorite books in the series, so the length didn't bother me at all!
cloe101
I don't think ootp was too long. In fact I think it was too short and they left out a lot of important stuff like the attack on hagrid, I think that if they would have put that in the movie I think it would have provoked a much more deep seeded hatred towards umbrige, I don't think they made her evil enough but i loved the book.
HP#1_wee_lil'
No, I definatley don't think it was too long. It was as long as it needed to be. There was lot of important stuff in it, from Harry's first kiss to the MoM battle at the end. And of course the important bit when Harry found out the true reason that Voldemort tried to kill him.
Plus, I like the books long, the more Harry the better right? I was a little dissapointed when I saw that last two books were as small but obviously JKR didn't see the need to make them as long as OotP.
becky12
Yes it was long but it wasn't just a load of waffle, there was just more information in there. Information that was necessary to explain Harry and Voldemort's connection, and the prophecy as well. I don't think it was too long at all, I think the length of it made it better. The more we get to read about Harry the better eh? wink.gif

JK Rowling can bang on as long as she likes. Though on hindsight she said she thought it may've run too long...

Impossible. She's got too much integrity to digress so much it turns to mush.
Killian
I don't think it was too long. The Order of the Phoenix was my favourite of the Harry Potter books, maybe bar The Deathly Hallows. The only I would say was too long would be The Goblet of Fire perhaps, but OOTP was just right in lengh in my opinion. The Harry Potter world is so in depth that JK Rowling could have written twice as long for each book and still made them captivating.
nevillesgirl
The only thing that made Order of the Phoenix too long was that they had to cut out so many parts of the book for the movie or risk having a movie that was 3 or 3.5 hours long. Personally OOTP was my favorite book in the series. Although it was a bit long to get through, it was packed with loads of stuff and not just elementary wizard stuff. It showcased the students growing up. I couldn't put it down and it did take me five days to read it.
Spatha
I don't think OOTP was too long, I thought it took a bit of getting into, but after you've read 40-50 pages your hooked. Like others have said, I'd love it if all the HP books were as long, or even longer, you just find out so much and it's alot deeper.
x_Robyn_x
I do remember JKR saying that she wished she had cut OotP down a bit. It was a VERY long book, and there were parts which were unnecessary e.g. Grawp - what did he contribute to the series? He had no reason to be there.
Hermione17
Like everyone else...NO it's wasn't to long. It would have been great if it was a lot longer. There is so much going on in OOTP..so many details. I don't think they did as good as they could have.

Oh and Grawp was important...at least in the last book. He helped out in DH when he was fighting with the other Giants. He helped Hagrid get into Hogwarts. Mind you...He's not a very big character but they needed him just a bit... I think.
Nasuada
A book can never be too long for me. I'm drawn to longer books. I think OotP was great at the length it was. I had actually been hoping the sixth and seventh would be even longer. (My whole family was keeping their fingers crossed that the seventh would make 1000 pages. tongue.gif ) The OotP is my favorite of all the books too. I think it's great. There's a lot of information in the fifth. You learn about the Order of the Phoenix and so much more. I think it was perfect! biggrin.gif
DeSs
Nope, as Chelsea said, a book is never long enough for me too. Indeed, it's even better for me, who was hoping not to finish it and being reading HP forever and ever.
Actually, when I saw I was like "whaat?! Woha!" *jumps*, and I wondered how long would be the following, HBP. And I got dissapointed of it when checked it wasn't that long, and in fact that it was shorter than CoF sad.gif I really liked HBP; I loved it, and I didn't get dissapointed at all happy.gif
And then I tried to think of which parts will be included in the movie and which not ... I think they did a pretty good job there, though, 'cause it's a book tricky to sum up.
Aqrab
Ii found some chapters in Oot and GOF too long, and HBP too short. The Question why did she choose to extend it that long? since i found first three books really entertaining and complete, i hope you dont hate me for saying this and i am a fan of this series but it seems to me that JKR used her power over editorial power if there was any? to publish post POA books without getting edited at all.

I am not a writer but i think IMHO that GOF, OOTP could use a little bit of editing. For example chapters devoted to Ghosts and dance parties and on the other hand you have hand full of pages on real order of the phoenix, It would ve been fun to know how they formed what they did flash backs of their fights with dark forces.
Medea
Order of the Phoenix film wasn't too long - instead, it was too short, and this made it a very frustrating film. I never get tired of saying this. They cut out Dobby, which was unforgivable; they made Dolores Umbridge a funny character, the sound track in scenes where she is present, was usually too light, and so on.
I do hope they didn't do the same to the Half-blood prince. The character Snape does not deserve such disrespect. mad.gif
forsaken_wolfess
For me, it wasn't that their were too many pages. There could have been a thousand, two hundred if it was interesting enough. But, for me, Ootp just seemed to go on and on and on... forever. Their time, in the beginning, at Grimauld place was drawn out and slightly boring, as was the school year. There were a couple interesting bits, but it was basically a long rant. That bugged me.
reaves.teffany
I disagree. That book was long but so was the Goblet of Fire! But think about how much information had to be put in. Things are definitely changing up! Book Five is to me the pivotal book in the series. It becomes alot more darker later on. And at this point we are starting to get alot more history. We have to know this stuff in order to understand everything that is going on! We get nibbles at why Snape hates Harry and his dad. We learn more about the wizarding world. Like i said it is a pivotal book it was necessary for it to be long. It was a great book!
Crazedd Redneckk
No i dont think it was. It just that their was so much detail put into the book that really made it longer. The beggining wasnt the most interesting part of the book. But from the school year onto trhe department of mysteries was quite interesting from my stand point! But i did enjoy the book regarless of how not so interesting the beggining was.

reaves.teffany
I agree on some parts in the book that were slow progressions. But never too many where the book became boring. I guess it was like that for a reason kind of goes with the motif in the book. like for mr. weasley gettin bit by the snake. nothing is really going on and bam something dramatic happens its all about builiding up to the climax of the book which i think in this case is the department of mysteries. but even that is slighty slow you have to hear about all the differecnt rooms. i think she had a reason though. it had been a long period between the 4th and 5th book like waiting for it to come out.
No George without Fred
I didn't think the book was too long. I was never board with it. I do feel that less happend in the book even though it was so long; like, I felt that more had happened in other books even though they were shorter HBP for example. The length wasn't a big deal for me. It doesn't matter how long or short a book is as long as it tells a story and tells it well.
reaves.teffany
i totally agree. some people are intimidated about how thick a book is etc. but if it draws me in then im game. JK Rowling is good at that. all her books are just so easy to pick up and read. you dont even notice how fast you are reading through to the end! haha.
Rachelle-is-a-Ravenclaw
Exactly reaves.teffany the harry potter books are so readable the pages are turning so fast because it's difficult to put the story down, personally, no harry potter book is too long for me, providing the story is of good quality, (which it is and way much more happy.gif ) so the book didn't really seem too long and it definately didn't take me long to read laugh.gif

I love long books, the bigger the better! No book is ever to long. If it's a good book, one wouldn't want to put it down, it just keeps us happier for a longer period of time. And JKR is a pretty detailed writer. She loves her details, but they are also important for the readers because we need to know what is going on with the entire story. Even if she can get a bit carried away... tongue.gif
acidpop
I don't think any of the books are too long. Especially not OotP, it was one of my favorites. Book can get too long if they get pointless, but JKR's books don't have that problem. I think they have to be that long just so she can fit every single thing in the story in them. I wouldn't trade her detailed writing for a smaller book ever.
mugglelovrspew
I don't feel OotP was too long. Sure, it took a while to read, but she wanted to get everything in that happened that busy 5th year. And I agree, that if there's needless information, that's when it gets boring. I think that when people don't want to take the time to read a book just because it's big, they're missing out on something, especially a series like HP. I took the books to school to read them, and some people thought I was insane because the book was so "big". I thought it was perfectly fine because OotP is a very good book.
HarryPotterIsLife
I have to agree with most of you here, I really don't think OotP was too long at all. Some books can be very good, and they are not even 100 pages long, and some books need those extra hundred (or seven hundred) pages to get the entire story.

With OotP, JKR I think wrote it so long so she could fit in the History. Like I read in an earlier post, OotP was that big turning point in the series. The main characters were getting older, the conflicts more profound, and Voldemort was officially back for the first time in the series. There was a lot more to be found out, and now that Voldy was back, it was like History repeating itself. So JKR needed to put in the flashbacks and memories and such for us, the readers, to understand why the Order was so worked up, why the Wizarding World was in such a frenzy.

Sure, some parts may have dragged on, but that happens in every book. You need the vital information, and sometimes it just needs to be done, even if it is boring.

Even though OotP is my second favorite of the series, so it may be that I'm biased that I don't dislike the book smile.gif

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A HARRY POTTER BOOK THAT IS TOO LONG!!!

Sorry but there isn't. dry.gif
OotP is a brilliant book with so much happening and such a great storyline which really sees certain characters' stories develop like Neville and Sirius, not to mention Harry. A lot of people say it is the most boring book but I disagree. There is no such thing as a too-long-Harry-Potter-book aand there is no such thing as a BORING Harry Potter book. The whole D.A/Anti-Umbridge movement is incredibly entertaining just as the new settings, the Ministry, St Mungo's and twelve Grimmauld Place are fascinating.
ChannelingGinny
Nope. OotP was not too long. I agree with harryjpotter

In fact at the end, I was quite disappointed (as I was at the end of all her books) that it did not go on and on. I didn't want her books to end, and have had to resort to re-reading them (3 times in one year... I know, there are others who have read them more than that in a year, but try doing it with 2 kids and a household to run! happy.gif ). I'm planning on re-reading 1-6 this spring, before HBP come out this summer, just to refresh my memory! Of course, they'll probably mess with the plot, but that's a whole 'nother thread dry.gif

There was just so much info given in OotP it HAD to be long in order to get it all in. It was necessary to understand how the ministry felt, how the Order worked, how the DEs and LV were gaining their strength, how the students played such a vital role. I typically do not like overly descriptive writing, but JKR does it in such a way that you are so drawn in to the story, that you relish all you are reading.

harryjpotter
ChannelingGinny,
I share your pain, I didn't want them to end either. I can never read them enough and just reread the whole series within the last month. I just started reading them again but in german since I just got the german books.

I was happy with the screen time they devoted to the fight at the Ministry and now the possession scene is one of my favourite parts of the whole film series so far.
I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get to see the St mUngo's scene with Neville's parents and Lockhart which would have been interesting but it was nice the way they incorporated Neville's history into the D.A scenes.
ChannelingGinny
harryjpotter - German, huh? Sprechen Sie Deutsch? Ich spreche ein bischen, aber es ist nicht so gut rolleyes.gif

I'll have to stick to reading them in english as I didn't study my german hard enough to be able to translate properly! I remember reading a german newspaper (while in munich) and thought I was reading about this huge international procession (dignitaries, perhaps?) and there was an explosion and several cars were incapacitated (terrorist plot?). Turns out I was reading the sports section and the story was about a formula one car race where a car crashed. I liked my version better! tongue.gif

I agree with you about the movie... even though the directors have taken great liberties (and yes, JKR had to approve, so you can't fully fault them) they have managed to include parts that are essential, even if they aren't included as originally written (Neville's parents). I, too, liked the "dueling" scene at the MoM. Y'know... I even liked how they left out all the various rooms in the department of mysteries. They were interesting, but not necessary to the story... just gave a little extra suspense!
harryjpotter
Wow ChannelingGinny, dein deutsch ist ja toll! Auf deutsch sind die Bücher eigentlich ganz lustig biggrin.gif
Haha that sounds fun about München.

Yes, Jo had to aprove a lot of stuff. She also had to tell them what to include that would be significant for later. She even had to tell them that Dumbledore's gay for HBP.
PirateGirl
I don't think OotP was too long. I love long books. And OotP was great. Except.. that Ron became a prefect(I felt like I was Harry when I read that. I knew that Ron deserved to be a prefect just as much as Harry but I still felt like Harry should be prefect.) and that Sirius dies. sad.gif
dchristen03
The bigger the book, the more exciting it is! I loved OOTP, it was one of my favorite Harry Potter books (well, all of them are, so whatever). Even though the film really disappointed me I didn't let that stop me from loving the book. OOTP was brilliant, although I would've liked it better if it was a tad longer, so more action biggrin.gif
HPWanderer'09
Nope, OOTP was not too long. I love the series so much that i really wish it had been a longer book! biggrin.gif
In fact, i think if it had been a shorter book, i think we all might have been quite angry with JK Rowling because she wouldnt have put in as much description as she did, and so there would have been even more frustrating questions in our heads at the time.
Yup...definetley the perfect length biggrin.gif
marauderxforever
OotP is my favorite book in the series, and I loved it so much, haha, I cry everytime I read Sirius's death sad.gif
And also, it was good to learn more things about the wizarding world.

And I agree with HarryJPotter, there is no such thing as a too long Harry Potter book.
Lord Skinner
I think it was the perfect legnth. It was well written, no parts seemed to drag. It was the necessary legnth to explain all the information and set up the last two books. It was an awesome book and never disappointed.
MrBubbles
Okay am I the only one who didn´t like OOTP all that much?
I didn´t think it was too long per say I just didn´t like what she did with the length of this one. It was just too depressing with many chapters being almost unnessecarily hard on Harry, it was just the most painful of the books too read at least for me.

There are rays of sunlight like when Fred and George escape on their broomsticks and my favorite character Luna Loovegood but overall I was just never too fond of this book.

I´m not sure if it had been better if it had been shorter but it feels like I could´ve been without certain chapters (Harry and Cho´s date was the most awkward scene in HP history and while it took out some character development I was glad it wasn´t in the movie).
snapesgirlforlife
In my opinion, the critics aren't the ones who are disapointed w/ the films like we are. For me, it wasn't long enough. They should've made it into 2 films for the lack of information in it. As well as the 6th film. The critics aren't obsessed w/ it as we are and I know a countless amount of people who were VERY disapointed w/ both of the last films. The director, David Yates, and the rest of the film-makers should look around and take into acount of what people think and they should fix their problems they've been having again and again. Because more than one person has pointed out a lot of problems and they could, they have the power to, make the films better.

I personally think they should have made the film into 2 films so they could put more vital information into the films.
