Why did DD trust Snape with the task that he did? How could he have been sure that Sev would go through with it? Why if he was a good man did he ask Sev to kill him? To save his rep with the other Eaters?
Dumbledore valued love above all and he knew that Snape was truly sorry for his mistake which led to the death of Lily. In this way Dumbledore's thinking was that he knew Snape loved Lily enough to want to atone for his actions even if it meant stretching to protecting the son of his biggest enemy. Also, Dumbledore was always intent on believing the best of people. I think the reason Dumbledore asked Snape to kill him was made pretty clear in the books - to save Draco tarnishing his soul and also that he would rather be killed by someone he trusted than letting the curse addle his brain into death. There are many other possible reasons for this though. Saving his reputation with the other Death Eaters is another good point.

And this must have come up before, but I have to ask. Why do you think Snape became a Death Eater in the first place? Was it force or choice?
The impression I got from the books was that Snape was brought up on a strict diet of pure-blood good, anything else bad'. As in pure-blood elitism. He certainly used the word mudblood unflinchingly even to the person he loved most. I think it was a combination of feeling like it was his duty to sign up as a Death Eater as someone who 'saw the importance of pure-blood status' but also that he wanted to come out above the likes of James and Sirius. Which is pretty daft seeing as he was a half-blood in comparison to their pure-blood.

Two other questions:

Why did Snape's mother end up with a muggle despite her pure-blood values?

How must Snape have felt to know that two of his biggest enemies were pure-blood whereas he was half-blood when he himself as a Death Eater and Voldemrot sympathiser this counted for so much?

Alonnet
Why did Snape's mother end up with a muggle despite her pure-blood values?
Actually if you go back and read you will find many people say multiple times, she was always a "good soul" and didn't believe in blood status

How must Snape have felt to know that two of his biggest enemies were pure-blood whereas he was half-blood when he himself as a Death Eater and Voldemort sympathizer this counted for so much?

Voldemort wouldn't have let that count because even if he was dead against half-borns, he knew what kind of power Snape possessed and would do anything to keep it on his side, not to mention Voldy's mother was said to most likely be a Squib so he too could have been half-born.
harryjpotter
Alonnet thanks for clearing that up. But that then leaves a gaping hole.

If his father was a muggle and his mother had a good heart, where did Severus get his ideas from?

Alonnet, Voldemort is a half blood, he even says as much to Harry in CoS. His father was a muggle and his mother's line was magical. Merope only appeared as a squib because she was terrified into submission by her father.
Alonnet
If his father was a muggle and his mother had a good heart, where did Severus get his ideas from?

It's very simple, because of his landing in Slytherin he grew up around people whose ideas were that muggle borns and half bloods don't deserve to have magic... but if you read the seventh books you see that he really was always loyal to Dumbledore and didn't care about blood status, he acted that way to keep up his roll as spy for Voldy. Therefore he was able to remain alive and keep his position, he did what was crucial.

harryjpotter, did you read any of the books, you seem to be a bit confused?
harryjpotter
Alonnet of course I have read all the books. But Severus had some of these ideas before starting Hogwarts. He did care about blood status at one point in his life but after going over to the light side he put that behind him. There was a time before he worked for Dumbledore and at that time in his life he believed in the cause he was fighting for, at least to some degree, that cause being Voldemort's.
Harry James Potter
Whoa, let me through some water on this fire...

If his father was a muggle and his mother had a good heart, where did Severus get his ideas from?

Okay, Severus and Voldemort are very similar in that because of their fathers, they hated muggles, simple as that. I'm not going to talk about Voldy because that would be offtopic.gif However, Severus' father was abusive and cruel and to the young Severus, he represented the muggle population. So that is where his animosity towards muggles first emerged. Then later on, once Lily was killed, he dropped all pretenses and told Dumbledore everything and from then on he was Dumbledore's man.

That's a really good point Harry James Potter.
But Alonnet, where does it say that Eileen had a good heart? Who was it that said that? I can't remember that bit but then everyone misses something now and again. She was always sour-faced in descriptions, just like Severus himself. And she was always arguing with with Severus's dad.
Harry James Potter

Thanks smile.gif

In reference to Eileen Prince, based on what I remember from the books and what was said about her, etc. I relatively certain that she was in fact and decent mother to Severus, in the sense that she loved him and when the father wasn't around, would sometimes be nice. But I also think I remember her being somewhat distant and thus, slightly cold towards Severus. So I don't think that she was especially cruel towards him but based on the abusive relationship with his father and the fact that she returned to him, even though he was abusive, she was just an okay mother haha. So basically I circled the wagons in saying she was aight.

-Nick
HJP
harryjpotter
She did come across as alright Harry James Potter, there was the memory where Severus is on platform 9/3 and his mother is with him, it was nice to read. There's a bit where Severus was described as not looking "well cared for" at age eleven which made me wonder about Eileen. We know Tobias Snape wasn't the most loving of fathers (to put it politely) but that part made me wonder about Eileen. I thought maybe Eileen was prevented giving Severus the level of care that she would have wanted to by Tobias. Any thoughts?
Harry James Potter
I think Eileen was really prevented from caring for him when the Tobias was home. As for when he wasn't, she was softer on him but still had some of that umm...sterness that Tobias showed, but not to the degree of Tobias. On whole, Severus had a rough upbringing.

Why did Snape's mother end up with a muggle despite her pure-blood values?

Hmmm...I think you guys may have this question covered. smile.gif

How must Snape have felt to know that two of his biggest enemies were pure-blood whereas he was half-blood when he himself as a Death Eater and Voldemrot sympathiser this counted for so much?

I never even thought of that. Severus must have hated that James and Sirius were pure-blood. He wanted to be pure blooded so badly, and there those two were, and it didn't really mean anything to them (as it rightly shouldn't).

Here's a related question:
Do you think any of the other death eaters knew that Severus was a half-blood? Did Voldemort know?

Lisa
harryjpotter
Great question lisasnape!

Do you think any of the other death eaters knew that Severus was a half-blood? Did Voldemort know?

I think Voldemort would have known. I think he would have wanted to make sure that none of his Death Eaters, especially those who grew as close to him as Severus, weren't muggle-born although I doubt ay muggle borns would ever have wanted to go within an inch of Voldie. I think he definately knew of Severus's parentage. And he couldn't exactly complain when he himself was a half-blood. As to the other death eaters, I am not sure. I don't think severus would have wanted the others to know of his turbulant upbringing so I doubt he would have mentioned it or willingly talked about it. I think the manner of his upbringing would have been more embarassing for him than actually being half-blood.
Snapefan21
Do you think any of the other death eaters knew that Severus was a half-blood? Did Voldemort know?

I don't think any of the Death Eaters knew, or cared enough to investigate. But as for Voldemort, I don't think he knew. Snape kept all his thoughts hidden from Voldemort, so why reveal his blood status? I don't think Sev told him, either. Even though Voldemort was a half blood, he didn't like his father, and tried to completely remove any essence of his father from his life, thus changing his name to Lord Voldemort. He didn't want to be a half blood. It ashamed him. So if he learned Snape was a half blood, he likely would have lost respect.
Alastorlet_and_Proud!
Do you think any of the other death eaters knew that Severus was a half-blood? Did Voldemort know?

Yes, I think they did know, and that's why Snape had to work so hard to gain their trust. I also think that one of the reasons Voldemort valued him was because of their similarities: Muggle father, witch mother.

How must Snape have felt to know that two of his biggest enemies were pure-blood whereas he was half-blood when he himself as a Death Eater and Voldemrot sympathiser this counted for so much?

Woah. That never even crossed my mind! I think it probably made a big difference though... Although, I don't know if 'The Half-Blood Prince' was a title that Snape chose because he was proud of his heritage, or whether it lowered his damaged self-esteem even further and he used it out of self hate or something...

Alastorlet_and_Proud!, great points there from you. I particularly like what you said about Severus using the title out of self-hate. It seems to me he used it privately. I don't think he intended others to know about it.

I hope Severus had a great Valentine's Day, and wasn't too lonely... I'd like to think he had himself occupied by marking potions essays (and maybe failing them all tongue.gif) .

Oh, and when does Rickmania week start?
harryjpotter
blink.gif Waaah this is crazy! I just got my results for the Boyfriend/Girlfriend at Hogwarts quiz here on Veritaserum and I got paired with Snape! I seriously didn't see that one coming...
Shame I didn't know before Valentine's day.
lisasnape
harryjpotter, I am so jealous! ermm.gif I did everything I could to get paired with Severus, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. I got paired with Lupin, an although I like him very much, it doesn't leave me in good standing with Sev!

Do you think any of the other death eaters knew that Severus was a half-blood? Did Voldemort know?

I don't think any of the death eaters knew that Severus was a half-blood. I believe he would have kept that to himself, based on their thoughts about anyone not pure blooded. I have a feeling that Voldemort didn't know either. Severus probably didn't know about Voldy's heritage when he joined up (it seems the dark lord pretended he was a pure-blood), so Sev would have kept the facts of his parentage a secret. And he was such a talented occlumens, that Voldy probably never found out.

Lisa
harryjpotter
Well that's the thing, I haven't a clue why I was paired with him... and as much as I love Snape, the idea kind of scares me.

Anyways, new question:

If Snape hadn't loved Lily, what form might his patronus have taken?
mugglelovrspew
Oh my goodness! So much talk going on here. I really need to keep up more.

Do you think any of the other death eaters knew that Severus was a half-blood? Did Voldemort know?

I don't think it really mattered whether Voldemort knew if Severus was half-blood or not, I don't think he would of cared. He was also a half-blood himself, so he couldn't give Severus any trouble for that. As for death eaters knowing, I'm going to say no. I don't think he would of let any of them know.

Oh, and Valentine's Day is not a big fan of mine, but I love your poem Lisa! It's perfect. That would of been joke I think that would of never gotten old if I were at Hogwarts during his years.

If Snape hadn't loved Lily, what form might his patronus have taken?

As to this question (I'm sick, and my mind is a little brain-washed right now) but his patronus was a doe, correct?

Why do you think Snape became a Death Eater in the first place? Was it force or choice?

I think Snape became a Death Eater because he had nothing left to lose. He was already friends with that select group of kids. Lucius Malfoy was a few years older and had no doubt told Voldemort of Snape's potential. The biggest reason I think is that Lily was no longer the option to try and keep him on the straight and narrow. She had made her choice to abandon him and thus he had no good reason to stay away from the only other family he was seeking.

I know everyone is anxious about Rickmania week and normally it is in February. I was thinking of doing it leading up to Alan Rickman's birthday. Does anyone have anything special they would like to do?

EDIT: Ooops, I must be the lamest SOSS President ever...Rickmania Week was supposed to start TODAY!!! So, in light of that little tid-bit, we have our first question.

What is the most intriguing thing about Alan Rickman in your opinion, professionally as an actor or in his personal life?
harryjpotter
What is the most intriguing thing about Alan Rickman in your opinion, professionally as an actor or in his personal life?

For me it has to be his amazing ability to act out any role given to him and make it the highlight of the show, no matter how small the part. He is such a character on the screen and when you see a film starring Alan Rickman you go away afterwards and it's him you remember. Both my partner and dad aren't Harry Potter fans but have seen the films since I watch them constantly and the person they remember the most is Alan Rickman as Snape.

Alan really steals the show and he deserves all the credit we can give him biggrin.gif

Haha I got Snape for the last quiz:

You are Professor Severus Snape from the movie 'Harry Potter'. You're very bitter, very smart, and your past has been one long nightmare. You teach Potions at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Although you can act like a brat sometimes, you've had a rough life, so its somewhat excusable. In the Harry Potter books, you are described as 'greasy-haired and hook-nosed'. yeah, right. Your hair is gorgeous. and so are you. cheer up.
Snapefan21
I got Franz Anton Mesmer from the movie 'Mesmer'. I've never seen Mesmer, so I don't really know what he's like.

I finished the matching game in 1:10. tongue.gif

Hey all-

So I hope everyone had a fantastic Valentine's Day, I know mine was quite excellent. But now that the Hallmark holiday of the year is over and due to the fact that our beloved President is starting Rickmania Week, I must bring the Valentine's Day Fanfic to a close.

SO....I do not want to write the last chapter myself, simply because this is a club effort and not my own. So I'll be needing a volunteer to write the last chapter and conclude our little story quite nicely (or meanly? if that's what you decide). Anyone interested in writing the last chapter, please PM me and I'll make the selection from there.

Thank!

Gosh, If Severus hadn't loved Lily, he might not have had a good memory powerful enough to conjure a patronus. I can't think of anything else in his life that would have made him happy. sad.gif

What is the most intriguing thing about Alan Rickman in your opinion, professionally as an actor or in his personal life?

The most intriguing thing for me is the way he uses his face as an means of conveying what his character is thinking. He has the best facial expressions. The looks he gives are always so though provoking. In Sense and Sensibility, for example, in the scene when Marianne(Kate Winslet) thanks him for rescuing her,his face changes from forlorn to thrilled in an instant. He doesn't say a word and he doesn't smile, but he does something with his face that makes you realize that he is ecstatic that she paid attention to him.

I also love the way he moves and his body language. He always brings his characters to life in three dimension. I've never seen him portray a character that I wasn't completely intrigued by. And that voice...sigh.

Harry James Potter
What is the most intriguing thing about Alan Rickman in your opinion, professionally as an actor or in his personal life?

What I admire most about Alan Rickman is actually two-fold. I really am impressed at the diversity of roles he can play. He is seen in a dark and sinister role in the Harry Potter series, an evil but ingenious thief in Die Hard, a comical boss in Love Actually, and he plays a slightly humorous role in Robin Hood. Not all actors can perform at such a high level of quality in a variety of roles to the success that Rickman has had. To me, that speaks volumes of the talent that he possesses.

Also, I really like the fact that he is not mainstream in his personal life. I know that British actors/actresses are less likely to be smeared across the tabloids in comparison to those from the states. However, he has had a longtime (and I mean longtime) girlfriend and has done a fantastic job of keeping his personal life separate from his acting. That is a quality that I wish I saw more in actors/actresses nowadays.

Well, the only movies I've consciously seen him in are the HP movies. I've heard of his other roles and how well he does. So I would say his versatility as an actor. It's really great to have that, being an actress myself, because instead of admiring the roles you love, you can be that role. I hate when people get the same kind of roles every single time.

Aly, that video was awesome. I felt like I was simply melting into my couch!

I found this article and it appealled to me because I have not yet seen Snowcake (shocking right!) It also talks about Alan's gentle persona rather than always focusing on his villian roles. You can view it HERE

This is an older article (1991) but it describes essentially Alan Rickman to a tee. Of course since it is considerably older, it doesn't take into account his more recent and fabulous roles but there are quotes in there that are absolutely true.

QUOTE
And for all the menace and piercing intensity he projects on both stage and screen, in person Alan Rickman is diffuse, amiable, tousled and gently bear-like. His voice remains a remarkable instrument - deep, soft and relaxed to the point of langour, with notes of musical delicacy.

Isn't this exactly the point of contention that has Snape Fans divided: If not for Alan's voice, would Severus Snape be as appealling to the female audience or would he be as repulsive as JKR intended?
QUOTE

A female admirer of Rickman's describes the actor's unusual appeal this way: "He isn't obviously handsome, almost ugly, but when he played Valmont something about his passion and intelligence made him unbelievably sexy."

I personally don't know what she is talking about 'almost ugly' mad.gif maybe it was just this character but she is incredibly accurate about his passion and intellience that he brings out in his roles that is totally sexy!

I really enjoyed Alan in Robin Hood. He was very...emotional. It was a spectacular performance. He was so into it. I also loved him as the Metatron (Voice of God) in Dogma...And he was so good as Jamie in Truly, Madly, Deeply...
Let's just say I love every one of his movies... happy.gif , mainly because he just becomes whatever character he plays.

Though A Fish Tale or Help I'm a Fish (whichever country you live in, it's the same movie) was a bit cheesy...I guess it was for little kids.

Since we are on the subject of Alan and his diversity in roles, which of his movies is your favorite and why do you like that particular character? Which of Alan's roles is your least favorite and why?

I'm sorry; I can't choose just one. I'm almost as obsessed with Alan Rickman as I am with Severus Snape. wub.gif So, my favorite "good guy" role of his is Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility. I've probably already bored you with some details in one of my last posts, so I won't do it again. My favorite "bad boy" roles are the Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood and, of course, Severus Snape. He's so delicious when he's bad. My favorite role where he is really evil is as the Interrogator in Closet Land. For anyone who hasn't seen it, his performance is incredible. The movie deals with the very serious topics of torture and incest and it's not an easy movie to watch, but his acting skills are at their zenith.

My least favorite role is the detective he played in Judas Kiss. It takes place down south and he does a southern accent (not a good one like in Something the Lord Made) that goes in and out. It's the only movie I've ever seen him in where I didn't enjoy him. shutup.gif

Since we are on the subject of Alan and his diversity in roles, which of his movies is your favorite and why do you like that particular character? Which of Alan's roles is your least favorite and why?

It has to be Locksley in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. I hated that film until Alan turned up in it. I was sitting there in school watching it thinking 'what is this drivel?' and along comes Alan and I think 'I'm saved!'. I had to write about the film for an exam which really got me thinking about Alan's performance and for me it drives the film. Morgan Freeman is a great film presence too but I find him out of place here although in the right setting I think Alan and Morgan would work great together.

Ok, so I already picked one but I'll be cheeky and pick a second. I love love love Sweeny Todd and Turpin was great. Alan shone once again here. He played his character so well that all through the film I was sitting there thinking 'come on, you evil git, time for your come-uppance' which normally doesn't happen if I like a particular actor. But Alan played his role so well he really got the audience to hate his character. Well most of the audience. This film was a lot more satisfactory though. A great director, grreat cast, well I seriously can't wait for Alan as the Carterpillar in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland!!!!!
mugglelovrspew

Well, as I've only seen him in HP, which I should watch some of these other movies but anyway.... I like him as Severus because he adds that is it "pizazz" to Snape that makes him a more lovable character than what we have in the books. Alan Rickman's Snape is more of what I imagine when I read now, and it makes me laugh more. Hmm, he adds life to it.

'Nother question:

What role would you like to see Alan in?

I'd quite like to see Alan as a pantomime dame. I can just picture it. Alan in some over the top frilly costume with the over the top stage make-up at Christmas saying 'oh no I didn't' with a crowd of children in the audience shouting 'oh yes you did!'
Did anyone go to pantomimes when they were younger? I would have loved to see Alan in one. Mind you I did see Jason Donovan in Josef and the Technicolour Dreamcoat one year which was interesting but still I would prefer Alan anyday.

I'd quite like to see Alan as a pantomime dame. I can just picture it. Alan in some over the top frilly costume with the over the top stage make-up at Christmas saying 'oh no I didn't' with a crowd of children in the audience shouting 'oh yes you did!'

I love that!!

I'm afraid I don't really have an opinion on the subject (being only 12, I haven't yet seen all the Alan Rickman films, I don't really know what roles he hasn't done). However, I think that he was really good in Sense and Sensibility. He would definitely be good in other period dramas.

So does anyone want to finish the SOSS Collaborative Valentine's Day Fanfic? We can't just leave Severus hung out to dry on this lovely date with Lily. If anyone's interested in writing the conclusion to our little fanfic, please PM me!

DAY 5 Rickmania Week

Today's challenge is to create a role for Alan Rickman or to cast him in one that was previously held by someone else. For example, if you think Alan Rickman would have made a fantastic Batman instead of whoever, then say that.

Does anyone remember the movie The Man in the Iron Mask with Leonardo Dicaprio and Jeremy Irons? I think Alan would have done great in the role that Jeremy Iron played...Aramis, I think. Actually, I think that Alan and Jeremy Irons could swap roles in almost anything because they take such similar roles.

DAY 5 Rickmania Week

I would have loved to have seen Alan Rickman in the role of Valmont in the movie Dangerous Liaisons. John Malcovich did a great job, but I think the role should have gone to Alan, since he won awards for his portrayal of the character on the stage. If the play hadn't been such a huge hit, the movie probably wouldn't have even been made. He would have been incredibly delicious as the uncaring, unconscionable seducer! blush.gif

I would really have liked t see him play, either Marcus or Victor in Underworld, Alan just has such a commanding and intimidating presence he would have been s perfect for either role.

Which means if you wish to read it, make sure you go to the Completed Fics Section. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the fanfic! DAY 5 Rickmania Week

I would love to see Alan Rickman play "Cal" in Titanic. I don't know who originally played him, but I think Alan Rickman would be good at the whole evil thing. He plays Snape, but anyway.....

I was really sad the way the fanfic ended. But it was so funny! I thought he might actually have a completely perfect Valentine's Day when I decided Lily would be his Valentine. *sigh* Oh well, maybe next year.

Toodles,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALAN RICKMAN

Today is the last day of Rickmania sad.gif but that doesn't mean that we can't ever discuss the wonderful talents and updated news on Alan through out the year.

Today, I think it is only fitting that we share our favorite Alan as Severus Snape movie moment up to this point. It is, after all the reason so many of us are enthralled with JKR's deliciously evil character.

Thank you to everyone who has participated and made this Rickmania Week such a success. Keep those questions coming.
