As promised, here is a shiny new thread for WAW.

....and from the founder Clara-Morgue....

Hey Everybody!
Welcome to The Wise and The Wonderful, 2nd edition!!

Please join in the conversation, if you do contribute you will automatically become a member.. please follow a few simple requirements;

If you do decide to join, please add something in your name about this club, a link if possible, if not the whole name, then W.A.W will do!
Also, try and keep on topic, we generally have some really good conversations and your input is greatly appreciated!

To get us up and running again... here are the last few questions which we had just started to discuss;

-Imagine we are entering the year after the downfall of Voldemort. What would Dumbledore wish for in the coming year? not just for Harry and the other surviving members of the order, but for the entire wizarding and muggle populations. Would he have any particularly special wishes??

-Some empathy required here- What do you think Dumbledore saw as his best and worst traits? He often saw other people for what they were, but he had some trouble when it came to himself, his vision was clouded with self doubt. (remember what did HE see as his best and worst traits)

-Lastly, What do you think Dumbledore believed his worst mistake/discision and best action/descision was? Try and think about it a bit, dont just say the death of his sister.. Think, was it before then, or in the many, many years afterwards? (once again, remember, what did HE think)

Happy posting all!

Ouu a new thread. And I'm the first post. smile.gif I just noticed it, and I realized that I hadn't yet answered those questions. So I will now. biggrin.gif

Imagine we are entering the year after the downfall of Voldemort. What would Dumbledore wish for in the coming year? not just for Harry and the other surviving members of the order, but for the entire wizarding and muggle populations. Would he have any particularly special wishes??

Hmm...well I would have to say that he would probably want the wizarding community to re-build itself, and that all those muggleborn witches and wizards who were persecuted and put in Azkaban released. He would also want the Minitry of Magic and Hogwarts to get back up and running; under new 'management' of course.

What do you think Dumbledore saw as his best and worst traits? He often saw other people for what they were, but he had some trouble when it came to himself, his vision was clouded with self doubt. (remember what did HE see as his best and worst traits)

Well I think that he would possibly consider his ability to love and trust everyone as a best and worst trait. Those traits can be good; but as he said in OoTP, if he didn't love Harry so much, he would've told him about the prophecy earlier.

What do you think Dumbledore believed his worst mistake/discision and best action/descision was? Try and think about it a bit, dont just say the death of his sister.. Think, was it before then, or in the many, many years afterwards? (once again, remember, what did HE think)

I think that he believed one of his worst decisions was not trusting Harry with the information of the prophecy. He knew that he should've told him, but as I mentioned in the previous question, he loved Harry too much. One of his best decisions may have been to decline the position of Minister of Magic; as he said in DH, he was power-hungry all those years ago and if he had accepted, perhaps he wouldn't have become the person he ended up being.

Well that's my two-cents worth anyway. wink.gif

Congratulations Seriouslysirius for winning the last dumbledore-ette of 2007, well earned.

Yeah new thread biggrin.gif

Now I got to catch up with the very latest questions…but I don’t have much time today so I will just answer one of them …

-Imagine we are entering the year after the downfall of Voldemort. What would Dumbledore wish for in the coming year? Not just for Harry and the other surviving members of the order, but for the entire wizarding and muggle populations. Would he have any particularly special wishes??
Well I think that Dumbledore would wish…

For Harry: I am pretty sure that the most important thing that Dumbledore would wish for Harry is for Harry to not endure any more suffering and pain as it is completely fair to say that Harry has been though a lot. I think that Dumbledore couldn’t bare it if Harry were to tolerate anymore hurt, pain, suffering because Harry truly is a young boy who has seen things to haunt him for the rest of his life, something’s no child should see.

For the surviving members of the order: Dumbledore would want them to have to hurt no more either. He would want the rest the Order to honour and celebrate the lives of those lost for the cause of defeating Lord Voldemort.

For the entire wizarding and muggle populations: Well I mainly think that he would wish for equality in the Wizarding World between pure-bloods, half-bloods, ‘mud-blods’. He would wish for the Wizarding World to coexist with each other but not to the extent of controlling one another.

For everyone: I think Dumbledore would wish for love. Love to all and everyone; love to keep everyone happy and strong. Love to conquer any ‘dark and difficult times’. Dumbledore wanted more love in the world so love therefore would be is true wish for all.

That’s all I have time for…for now…sorry…but…as a present…

My Dumbledore vs. Voldemort video is done so enjoy guys, please comment or rate if you can of course biggrin.gif

get some new questions i have already answered those ones in the old thread

Just so you know.. we do try and get new questions up as soon as we can, but I don't have much time to think of topics which might be good to discuss, at the moment. Sometimes its nice to actually discuss answers.. if you look at what other people have written and continue the discussion.. but of course if you don't want to do that, feel free to ask your own questions! We always welcome new topics, if they're interesting!!

What would Dumbledore wish for in the coming year?
Ginny.Weasley, Your point about the wizarding community re-building itself is very good. Dumbledore understood the importance of unity, and people relying on one another. During the time after the final battle people would need each other more than ever, they would need people to look up to and to follow, to organise and aid them, and they would need their surviving friends and family members for support and love.
I think Hogwarts would be a big factor. Dumbledore would want young witches and wizards to begin to learn again, maybe a few changes could be made, but overall, Hogwarts would go back to what it had been- a safe haven, and home, to many people.

Great answers S_R_S, yes.. Dumbledore would definitely want the suffering to end, and for love to show through more than it had in the past.
And on the topic of equality.. Even if Dumbledore thought that complete equality wasn't achievable in one short year, he would still wish for people to beginto accept each other. That would be the beginning of an equal community.

What do you think Dumbledore saw as his best and worst traits?
Good point about the love there, G.W.. whilst love enabled him to do so much, and be so wise and think freely, it also restrained him. It bound him to obligations and sometimes prevented him from doing what was right in the long term, because it hurt somebody in the short term..
I think he saw his abilities to love and trust as his best traits, because he saw these abilities as the best parts of humanity, and of human nature. He prized the ability to love above knowledge, power or any other trait...
As for what he saw as his worst trait.. I think he would see himself as selfish. Now.. we don't see that, we know that the Dumbledore we know and love is as unselfish as a man can get.. but I think he probably saw something in himself that was selfish.
Whether it was his past- his greed and impulsiveness whilst he was friends with Grindlewald.. that was the problem.. or something else.
Perhaps his obsession with the deathly hallows.. his 'selfish' desire to protect Harry- at the cost of others. Perhaps the secrets he kept, and the people whos lives he 'selfishly' disrupted and endangered.. perhaps the deaths hecaused.
Although we see what he did as the right thing, we know that he did what he did to help and protect people.. I think that there was always something inside of Dumbledore that told him he was greedy and selfish.. and however far he ran he couldn't escape that.
And.. in no attempt to play down his death but.. Do you think that this played a part in Dumbledore's sacrifice? maybe he would loose that feeling of selfishness if he made the ultimate sacrifice..

What do you think Dumbledore believed his worst mistake/decision and best action/decision was?

I will have to leave this question until next time.. when I have a bit more free time.. and I can see your thoughts!!

Finally.. S_R_S- great video!! If you would like it on the WAW site, you can send it to me via email, or msn! It would be a great addition!
On that note.. any newcomers that haven't yet looked at the WAW site- hereit is.. take a look around, and if you have anything that you wish to contribute, contact me via pm!!

EDIT: I just realised that this was on the last thread.. but most of you probably haven't see it yet-
I also quickly wanted to say that this month's dumbledore-ette will be decided in a completely different way. Instead of sherbet lemons, The award is going to be based soley on the things that you say. If you say something brilliant about Dumbledore, something very acurate and insightfull.. you could be named Dumbledore-ette of the month. Because we're all a bit busy.. (including me!) If you read something by another member that you think is worthy, please pm it to me. That way, I can see a wider range of things!!

Yay for the new thread!!!! happy.gif

so I'm gonna post my first post on this brand new thread

Imagine we are entering the year after the downfall of Voldemort. What would Dumbledore wish for in the coming year? not just for Harry and the other surviving members of the order, but for the entire wizarding and muggle populations. Would he have any particularly special wishes??

I would say that DDs biggest desire was that people would live without prejudices and being discriminated against. He probably wished that people learned from the second war and would all realise how ridiculous it is to judge people just because of their blood status or anything else...yes I suppose he would want somebody who is having np prejudices at all to be Minister of Magic and well therefore hed be quite satisfied with Kingsley....

What do you think Dumbledore saw as his best and worst traits? He often saw other people for what they were, but he had some trouble when it came to himself, his vision was clouded with self doubt. (remember what did HE see as his best and worst traits)

I think one of his worst traits is already said here...he has not really the abilty to assess himself properly. I guess this is the second worst part of him as he may think. His worst quality is definetly that he would abuse power if he had too much of it. He himself even said that he didnt want to become Minsiter of Magic as he was scared of what he would do with that power. This leads also to mistrust towards himself.
His best abilty, he thinks, is his brains. He knows he is brilliant and he also says often that he doesnt think that he is wrong therefore he is very relying on his intelligence.
Moreover I think he knows that he can be a good listener and of course he is brilliant at analising other people and their behaviour.

What do you think Dumbledore believed his worst mistake/discision and best action/descision was? Try and think about it a bit, dont just say the death of his sister.. Think, was it before then, or in the many, many years afterwards? (once again, remember, what did HE think)

His worst mistake was first of all to be friends with Grindlewald and fall in love with him I suppose which led to his obsession with the Deathly Hallows.
Additionally he definetly regrets that he was too much of a coward (I guess he would say that its not really what I think about him) to admit his friendship with grindlewald or even act much earlier which would have saved probably many lives.
I dont have to mention the thing with his sister, you all know it by now.

Have fun with the new thread all of you! I wish all of us a great time happy.gif

Hello everyone,

It's nice that I've finally got some time to catch up.

Imagine we are entering the year after the downfall of Voldemort. What would Dumbledore wish for in the coming year? not just for Harry and the other surviving members of the order, but for the entire wizarding and muggle populations. Would he have any particularly special wishes??

As he believed that evil will not be totally vanquished, he would wished that at least the wizarding world would have peace long enough. As the entire wizarding world needs to heal and a lot of repairs inside and outside the Ministry of Magic with regards to their system and beliefs.
As for some special people in his life:
Harry – of course he would want Harry now to have a normal life, that he had never experience since birth.
Hogwarts – he would want that the school continued what he had established, giving chances to those people that have magic and not of what their blood status were.
Hogwarts’ Staff – to be united as always and to teach all that had the gift.
Ministry of Magic – that it would open its eyes that had been so clouded before.
Order of the Phoenix – that it would not be needed again, but when the time comes that it need to reborn to fight another dark wizard then it would be ready as always to defend the good.

What do you think Dumbledore saw as his best and worst traits? He often saw other people for what they were, but he had some trouble when it came to himself, his vision was clouded with self doubt. (remember what did HE see as his best and worst traits)

His worst trait would be that he was blinded by his intelligence thus his ambitions. He thought himself to be above everyone because of his mind; with this his ambitions were beyond reasons, thus eluding the right thing he must do with his gift. This had lead to the
I believe that he would say that his best trait was he was able to see the best out of someone, thus giving them his trust and chances to prove themselves.

What do you think Dumbledore believed his worst mistake/discision and best action/descision was? Try and think about it a bit, dont just say the death of his sister.. Think, was it before then, or in the many, many years afterwards? (once again, remember, what did HE think)

I think he would think that his worst mistake was to be in love with someone like Grindelwald, and not what he had felt. He knew that he could not chose whom to be in love to but rather just hope that someone was not like who Grindelwald was. He had fight for love He understood that love is not a sin, but continuing to be blinded by it is not healthy at all, indeed, he believed that love is the most powerful magic and beyond all dark magic and any witchcraft. After all, he had explained and always try to let everyone understand that being capable and the ability to love is the most old and advanced magic. In fact he had seen, experienced and proven the power of love, the love that conquers all. He had seen how love had changed Snape, he had seen what Lily had given Harry, and he had seen what Harry had felt in the Ministry of Magic, this has proven that love is beyond all magic.

Keep Posting Guys!!!

I believe that Dumbledore would want Harry to like annesches said and live a normal life and to have a nice big family and love Ginny and his children. As for the entire wizarding world I bet that he would want them to relax but to keep an eye out for 'future Voldemorts' so that it isn't like after Voldemort someone else becomes a Dark Lord. Also he probably would have wanted the Ministry to help out the muggles. Not to mention the wizarding world needs to pick better Minister of Magic.

What do you think Dumbledore saw as his best and worst traits? He often saw other people for what they were, but he had some trouble when it came to himself, his vision was clouded with self doubt. (remember what did HE see as his best and worst traits)
I is very sad that Dumbledore would ever think that he had any bad qualities. But I quess that he would think that his worst trait would be his longing for power. As for his best traits, now I know that I could name a thousand good traits of his but as for what HE thought as his best quality I think it would be that he would be proud of the knowleadge that he gives his students.

What do you think Dumbledore believed his worst mistake/discision and best action/descision was? Try and think about it a bit, dont just say the death of his sister.. Think, was it before then, or in the many, many years afterwards? (once again, remember, what did HE think)
Ok then I quess that it would be ummm.....that he didn't keep a closer eye on Voldemort and that he didn't give him 'all that he could have'. Now I don't think that he could have done anything when it came to Voldemort, but Dumbledore is so humble and self-doupting that I think that he thought that he could have done something.

OK this is the third time I've written this post because for some reason it keeps getting deleted.. and I'm starting to get a little peeved.. I apologise in advance for any rudeness...

Right.. I'm a teeny bit disappointed that nobody has pm'd any suggestions for dumbledore-ette of the month. Maybe I overestimated how much you guys actually read other people's posts... oh well we can just use the normal.. boring.. easy way of doing things if none of us can be bothered..

What do you think Dumbledore believed his worst mistake/decision and best action/decision was?
I think that (for the third time), that I agree in part with hp_book_reader here- that it is something to do with Voldemort. I reckon Dumbledore probably thought that he underestimated Riddle, and how far Riddle would go to get what he wanted. This was something he would vow never again to repeat.
As for his best action.. I'm not totally sure.. perhaps it was something to do with letting Harry prove himself, and relating to my other point- not underestimating what Harry and his friends could do. Personally, I think it put their 'mission' in danger.. But dumbledore probably saw these actions- letting people make their own way in life, and not restricting them, as well as letting go of his own fear.. as his best actions.

And since nobody seems to answer questions unless i say 'here's a question'.. Here's a question-
Do you think that the possibility of Dumbledore feeling as though he was/had been greedy and selfish played a part in his sacrifice at the end of HBP?

QUOTE

I had thought about it.. It really depends on when, how much time and help I have.. and what you guys would like.. I did check birthdays of character/actors in the past.. I'll have another think if you guys would like something.. I think it would be a good idea.. and a great opportunity to give out sherbet lemons!! tongue.gif

Oh cool, another thread! Yay!

First off, I want to say a late congrats to Seriouslysirius for winning Dumbledore-ette of the last month in 2007! Well, I guess that answers my question if only girls can be the Dumbledore-ette! tongue.gif

To the questions....okay since I don't have time to answer all of them, I'll just answer the last two...

What do you think Dumbledore believed his worst mistake/decision and best action/decision was?

I agree with most of you on the fact that Dumbledore's worst was to underestimate Riddle, the things he was capable of. But maybe, do you think it was also when he dueled with Grindlewald? Or even becoming friends with him? getting into all of that dark magic and stuff? Because he seemed to regret that quite a bit. But just think, if he never got involved with Grindlewald, what might've happened...

Do you think that the possibility of Dumbledore feeling as though he was/had been greedy and selfish played a part in his sacrifice at the end of HBP?

Hmm, good question. I don't think it was so much that he was feeling greedy/selfish though, it might have been something he HAD to do, in order to help Snape and the rest of the Wizarding community. Maybe a teeny bit of him felt that way, but I don't think he took it that hard on himself as to make it play a big part in him being killed.

Oh, I didn't know we had to PM you Clara, I thought you picked. Shows how much I know!

Do you think that the possibility of Dumbledore feeling as though he was/had been greedy and selfish played a part in his sacrifice at the end of HBP?

I agree with bookworm10, I don't really think it had to do with that but that he felt that he would do more good dead than alive, because he would help Draco and Snape. But because he thought that of himself he maybe thought that he 'deserved to die' in the fact that it was his greediness (greediness is a bad word but I quess that is how Dumbledore thought is actions were) that he was injured in the first place. sad.gif

PS- Can I say that I'm a member of WAW?
Gwenog

sacrifice? I would hardly call it one if I am honest! I mean he would have died anyway...he didnt really choose that he would die but moreover how he would die! I would hardly call that a sacrifce....if someone had to do a sacrifice that was Snape and DD...

No, I don't think it did. Dumbledore realised he had been greedy and selfish (something hard for me to say, being a worshipper Albus), but he saw this in his old age as strengths, showing he was Human. Even if he thought these were weaknesses, he would see them as proof of humanity, and therefore would see them as reasons to die. He died so Harry could live, and with that, he died honourably, and let his plans carry on on there twisting paths towards the Downfall of the Dark Lord.
NKIqbal
When Dumbledore died it had nothing to do with him sacrificing his life because he was going to die anyway the people who did make a sacrifice were Moody, Lupin, Tonks, James and Lily Potter, Fred, Snape, Dobby and Harry (though he survived).
Belladawna
Hi everyone! I've been lurking around this thread (and the previous one) for a while, and couldn't resist posting smile.gif

Do you think that the possibility of Dumbledore feeling as though he was/had been greedy and selfish played a part in his sacrifice at the end of HBP?

I do believe that Dumbledore sacrificed his life for Harry's at the end of HBP. Irregardless of the fact that he was going to die, or had prearranged who would kill him, he still chose to protect Harry and allow Draco to disarm him. He could have chosen to hold on to his wand and fight his way out of the situation (I think we'll all agree he had enough skill as a wizard to accomplish this) -- instead of hanging on to his wand, he used his few seconds to protect Harry. Dictionary.com defines sacrifice as " to surrender or give up, or permit injury or disadvantage to, for the sake of something else." Dumbledore opted to allow Draco and/or his fellow Death Eaters (and Snape) to kill him to allow Harry to carry on.

On that note, I think Dumbledore feeling greedy/selfish guided most of his future decisions, and definitely impacted his decision to sacrifice himself. In my mind, Dumbledore may have been trying to "redeem" himself for his less-than-admiral thoughts/actions from when he was young. I don't think this was the only decision in his life that was impacted by any feelings of guilt or selfishness.
clara morgue
Hi guys!
Welcome, Belladawna- great post, I hope we see some more of you! A warm welcome also to The Writing on the Wall and NKIqbal.

See, this is the type of conversation that I like, where people have different opinions and actually express them!

I definitely think that it was a sacrifice, even though Dumbledore was ill, and knew that he was going to die at some point- probably soon.
NKIqbal and Gwenog.. your views surprised me! (but that's good tongue.gif ).. its just.. even if you knew that you were going to die, even if you knew that you only had months.. weeks even, giving up those last few moments is a huge sacrifice. Its hard to imagine unless you have been there, or close to there, but it is a sacrifice, and to have the willpower to offer up even the last few minutes of your life....
To the original question, I agree with Belladawna that his feelings of guilt and selfishness had a huge impact on the decisions throughout his life. His willingness to sacrifice his life probably was partly fueled by the need to redeem himself. However, I don't think that this was the only reason he was prepared to give up his life. In the later years of his life he became almost completely selfless, and a selfless action or sacrifice is no longer selfless if it is fueled by a selfish need..

Leading on from this, another question- What do you think Dumbledore thought of in the last few moments of his life, standing on the astronomy tower?
Its a question which requires quite a bit of insight and perception.. but im sure you can do it biggrin.gif

Oh yes this is a new thread. Yay! biggrin.gif

Right well i will answer one of the questions just to get back in the swing of things.

What do you think Dumbledore thought of in the last few moments of his life, standing on the astronomy tower?

I honestly think aside the fear, because afterall Dumbledore is human. He must have felt fear, for even he does not fully know what happens after death. Even if he did have some idea it was a huge gamble/sacravice to take.
So his last thoughts. Prehaps saying goodbye to the world, remembering students he taught, good collages, friends. And also hopeing that his old friend would go through with the last and most important task he had set him. ( Of course that's Snape.) Oh and of course he would be thinking of Harry.
I think it would be a nice thing for him to overall remember everyone. Just a nice idea, to say his own little goodbye to the world i think.

... Well i tried. laugh.gif

And oh a big welcome to all thosse new memebers to W.A.W.
hp_book_reader
- What do you think Dumbledore thought of in the last few moments of his life, standing on the astronomy tower?

I think that Dumbledore was thinking about Snape, and that Voldemort would have a lot of faith and trust (well as much faith and trust Voldie can give) in Snape. Also that Voldie would reward him. I think this because Snape was the last person that Dumbledore saw before dying, and I know that whenever I see someone I immediately think about that person by habit, but I guess he could also be thinking about Harry or about Draco.
Belladawna
First off, Thanks for the warm welcomes, Dan and Clara Morgue smile.gif

What do you think Dumbledore thought of in the last few moments of his life, standing on the astronomy tower?
Well, when he was talking to Draco, I think he would have been thinking of different ways to convince him to go into hiding with the Order (I know, the obvious answer). After that though, I think he would have been reflecting on his life and choices. I also agree with hp_book_reader that he would have been thinking of Snape, and whether he would carry out their plan. I love the idea that he would have been thinking about his friends, past and current students and collegues. A private wave goodbye.
clara morgue
What do you think Dumbledore thought of in the last few moments of his life, standing on the astronomy tower?
Like the rest of you that have answered so far, I agree that he would take a very quick look back at the most important people and things in his life.. But I think that even though he was stuck in the past for many years, he was primarily a forward looking man.
I think in the very last moments of his life he would think of what would happen next. But, unlike most people, who would look on it with fear, even terror, Dumbledore would see it as the next great adventure, and welcome this chance to learn with open arms. He knew he was going to die, but he didn't know what was waiting for him in death. Whether it was somewhere that he would see his family again, or somewhere that he could help Harry and others from.. or even just somewhere marginally more peaceful than life.. he would welcome this.
Maybe I just see in Dumbledore what I would like to see in myself.. to me.. he wasn't afraid of death.. Whilst he didn't understand what he would find there, he understood and accepted that it would be different, and an adventure.

So after his goodbyes to the past, I think he would look to the future.

keep up the posting!!

What do you think Dumbledore thought of in the last few moments of his life, standing on the astronomy tower?

I agree a lot with clara morgue on this one (and whoever else said it) that his life probably flashed before his eyes(at least that's what they say when you're about to die) and he probably thought about all the important people in his life, especially Harry, and maayybeee possibly Grindlewald, his brother and his sister, and everyone else in his life.

He also was probably anxious for what's ahead, what really happens after death, and excited of course. He was getting pretty old, and he seemed satisfied with his life, so I think he was just ready to "kick the bucket"

He would have wished that Snape would perform the most unselfish deed in his life – killing him. Harry, Severus, and Draco would all be safe at that moment when Snape acted on what they had planned all along. Then Harry would go on and fulfil his destiny, vanquishing Lord Voldemort. Finally, he could go on and join his family that he had longed for and that those who he will leave would eventually live peacefully.

Hey guys.. well its definitely slow around here at the moment isn't it!

Just a few questions to try and get the conversation moving-

What do you think Dumbledore liked most about Hogwarts?

Which teacher at Hogwarts do you think Dumbledore got on least with?

The minister was always very worried that Dumbledore was trying to take over as minister for magic. Do you think Dumbledore ever wanted or wanted to become minister.. or even accepted the position if he had been formally requested to?

Remember we started that little collaborated fic a while back? well I just remembered about it.. and decided I should probably do something with it. So I've put it onto the Full fics section of the site- WAW Site.. Some bits may be very slightly altered, because i did a quick spelling and grammar check while I was at it.. Its just left as 'part one' because it finishes so abruptly at the moment, hopefully my putting it on the site will encourage some people to carry it on?? pretty please?

OOOOh wow thank you thank you thank you Clara! (Sorry, I'll try not to make a scene) Wow this is sooo great! Thank you times a million!

Oh, and thanks a bunch to Ashely for this awesomely sweet icon! I added it to my sig the moment I could!

Okay I'm done. To the questions!

What do you think Dumbledore liked most about Hogwarts?

I think he liked most was the same reason Harry liked it so much. He liked the feeling of home, the safe feeling, of being with kids and just that...magical atmosphere that we all love too! Do you get my drift? I think there wasn't something specific that he liked, I think he just loved everything about it, from the Great Hall to the Forbidden Forest. It was his home, after his family died (except for Alberforth).

Which teacher at Hogwarts do you think Dumbledore got on least with?

Hmmm...great question. Probably the History of Magic teacher, haha! Who WOULD like him? He's a total bring-me-down! DD probably never even talks to him for fear of falling alseep! biggrin.gif

The minister was always very worried that Dumbledore was trying to take over as minister for magic. Do you think Dumbledore ever wanted or wanted to become minister.. or even accepted the position if he had been formally requested to?

No way! DD was always the modest, humble type. He never wanted fame or glory, just to teach young witches and wizards. Plus, how could he keep up with being minister, on account of all that Voldemort stuff? He wouldn't have enough time in a day! And Hogwarts was his home, like I said before. The only time he probably would EVER want to be MoM would probably be in the fifth book, so he could stop those crazy rumors and DO something about Voldy.

Once again, Thank you sooo much!

Oh, and I'll TRY to write some more of the story, if I get time Clara!

What do you think Dumbledore liked most about Hogwarts?

I think he loved it that he got so much attention because of his intelligence...
I guess he was also glad that he was distracted by the fact that his sister was sick and his dad in prison...he definetly was glad noone knew about that(except for his friends) and that people were just liking him for what he was...
but I guess he was never really mischievous in a way so that the secrets of hogwarts may have become interesting for him when he was teacher ...

Which teacher at Hogwarts do you think Dumbledore got on least with?

oh god thats a good and tough one...
I think he may have had some issues with dippet when he was headmaster...
but hmmm...in his own headmaster periode...*after 15 mins thinking...I swear..*
TRELAWNEY!!!
yes I guess she annoyed him quite a few times and he was like... rolleyes.gif hehe *proud*

The minister was always very worried that Dumbledore was trying to take over as minister for magic. Do you think Dumbledore ever wanted or wanted to become minister.. or even accepted the position if he had been formally requested to?

wasnt he offered to become Minister of Magic for two times already? well he himself said that he doesnt know if he can handle power...so he said no...

Congrats on being named Dumbledore-ette, bookworm101! Well Done!!

What do you think Dumbledore liked most about Hogwarts?
I believe Dumbledore saw Hogwarts as a sort of refuge -- to tap into Gwenog's thought, I think he might have felt he could "escape" his home life when he was younger, and truly shine at school. Those feelings about Hogwarts probably grew, so that he saw the school as a safe haven... not to mention a place where he could actively help train and mould young witches and wizards, maybe to help them avoid any mistakes he himself had made in the past.

Which teacher at Hogwarts do you think Dumbledore got on least with?
It's hard to single out any one teacher Dumbledore didn't actually get along with -- he always seemed so amused by all their eccentricities! Even when one of them was being difficult, he seemed to let their issues roll off him like water off a duck instead of rising to their bait. I'm going to say he met his challenge with Slughorn. Slughorn was so defensive with Harry when Harry was trying to get information about horcruxes in HBP... we get the impression that Dumbledore must have been pressuring Slughorn for the memory of him and Voldemort, and Slughorn would not bend to Dumbledore's will/suggestions/pressure. I'm not saying that he and Slughorn hated eachother, but I feel that their relationship would definitely have been very strained after Dumbledore attempted to get the memory from Slughorn. Out of all the other teachers at Hogwarts at that time, it would have made Slughorn the one he got on with the least.

The minister was always very worried that Dumbledore was trying to take over as minister for magic. Do you think Dumbledore ever wanted or wanted to become minister.. or even accepted the position if he had been formally requested to?
Gwenog nailed my thought on this exactly -- Dumbledore was offered the position of Minister of Magic on more than one occasion, but turned it down because he himself thought he did not do well with power. I beg to differ though, I think that Dumbledore would have made a good and fair Minister.(I'm a little bit personally biased though LOL) smile.gif
Gwenog
oooh I didnt see that!!!
congratz bookworm101

Belladawna my second thought was Slughorn too and I quite agree with you...I guess the memory thing really damaged their relation ship...and I also think DD may have thought that the Slug Club was a silly idea too... it definetly made some pupils feel left out...(Ron) and DD as sensible as he is definetly didnt like the way Slughorn made them feel happy.gif
Insomnia
Wow! I haven't been in here in quite a while. *waves to those few familiar faces*

What do you think Dumbledore liked most about Hogwarts?

I think Hogwarts was a way for him to repent for his brief moment of being power hungry which lead to his sister's death. Knowing where he went wrong and why, not to mention realizing that a position of power was the one thing he needed least (that's why he refused the MoM position), he decided to focus his attention on bettering the future generation. By learning from his own mistakes, he could help those young minds from following in his footsteps. I think he felt redemption in doing this. So between that, and shaping the minds of the next generation, I think he liked those aspects of Hogwarts the most.

Which teacher at Hogwarts do you think Dumbledore got on least with?

I'd have to say Trelawny. He really has no use for divination, and if I remember correctly, he only hired her because of the prophecy she made. He didn't want the prophecy or her to fall into the wrong hands. Had she not made that prophecy, she most likely wouldn't have been employed and divination might now have been taught.

The minister was always very worried that Dumbledore was trying to take over as minister for magic. Do you think Dumbledore ever wanted or wanted to become minister.. or even accepted the position if he had been formally requested to?

Like others have pointed out, DD turned down the position because he didn't trust himself with that kind of power. After the Hallows and Grindelwald situation, he felt best to stay away so he couldn't be tempted by power again, at least the wrong kind of power.

Oh we have questions. laugh.gif

What do you think Dumbledore liked most about Hogwarts?

This in a strange way could be your hardest question Clara... Because we know that Dumbledore had such a love for his school, his students, and the fact he could pass some of his wisdom to thosse younger. I think if i had to pick one major thing that made Hogwarts shine for him, was his love that Hogwarts was generating something special. In this case giving his gift to students. The ability to pass on knowledge. I don't beleive it's the buliding, because the buliding is just a concrete structure. It's what happens inside that is the most important. When he first entered the gates i beleive he saw such wonders. Something that could make him foget all the problems in his life. Then be able to work and do something that made him feel happy. When he got older i'm sure the wonders of teaching began to take hold, and he knew he could help others who had been trhough something like what had happened to him. I think he liked Harry in this way because it's sort of exactly what happened to him. That's what connects Harry, Voldemort and Dumbledore. I think anyway..

I promise i'll answer the other later. I need to think of good answers for them. biggrin.gif

Happy posting guys. biggrin.gif

Hello guys!

What do you think Dumbledore liked most about Hogwarts?
Some really great answers here guys! Seriouslysirius, I love your answer, it's really perceptive- do you mind if I put it onto the Quote page of the site?
I agree that it would be the fact that Hogwarts was doing something so important, and from his position there, he could see multitudes of Young witches and Wizards grow both magically and emotionally.
However, although the building itself was 'just a building' (though im hoping it wasnt just a concrete structure wink.gif ) It still held some strong memories and emotions for Dumbledore. He would remember the happy times there, as well as the bad times from which he grew as a person. So I do think that the building did mean something to him..
Now... Dumbledore said he hated the hangings on the beds in the boys domitory. I reckon it was because they kept everything enclosed and seperate, and when it was dark and silent Dumbledore was thrown into his chasm of guilt. So i think his favorite part of the 'physical' Hogwarts was the grounds, where he could walk freely and hear wildlife and people in the distant- where it would be pecaseful but never silent.
Of course, thats just my own very specific idea.. but what the hell!!

hmm.. Im not sure about that (was it Binns by the way?) I don't think he was really bothered either way.. whilst DD probably respected how much Binns knew, he would be very.. something? wacko.gif ... about the way that Binns 'taught'..
It seems that Trawlenry and Slughorn are the main front-runners.. yep I agree that those two probably clashed with Dumbledore the most. I can imagine that he would have clashed more in his younger years, but with age would have pretty much got on with anybody.

Ahh got to go again.. Ill try and come up with some more topics wacko.gif ... and some activities when I get time.

I'm sorry I haven't been here in ages! I swear it's because I'm back at school... tongue.gif

What do you think Dumbledore liked most about Hogwarts?

I think what he liked about the place was that it was a place of education. Not education in the stuffy "I have money, education is the most important thing in the world, I'm going to be Prime Minister" way, but more life education. He was able to see the new arrivals each year and watched how they progressed from children to adults, gaining essential skills etc. He could see each individual and what they gained from the place. I think that would have made him very happy, as he always struck me as quite an inquisitive and caring man. Also, the place held very happy memories for him.

I also think that there was a certain element of fear associated with the place. He knew where he had gone wrong in his life and I feel he could have felt quite powerless to stop other people's lives going in similar directions. I think that it was a place where he had to face his past quite a bit as well, which was obviously a very painful experience.

Which teacher at Hogwarts do you think Dumbledore got on least with?

As many of you guys have already said, either Slughorn or Trelawny. Slughorn was quite superficial with limited loyalty, but he did posess a reasonable heart. Trelawny was essentially a nutter. Though the teachers I think he had the least respect for were probably Umbridge, Lockheart and Quirrel. For obvious reasons. They were either thick, shallow, evil, weak, or had ulterior motives. Or indeed a combination. ohmy.gif At least with Slughorn and Trelawny their hearts were in the right places. smile.gif
nevillesgirl
**jumps in to the room excitedly* I hope you guys have missed me as much as I have missed you. Now on to the questions.

What do you think Dumbledore liked most about Hogwarts?
I think what appealed to Dumbledore the most about Hogwarts was that it was a school that was not opposed to progress. Each Headmaster was allowed to bring something unique to the school as far as education was concerned and the teaching of young witches and wizards would have needed changes especially with an enemy who changed the way the dark arts were taught because he used them...(voldemort). I think this is what DD liked about hogwarts.

Which teacher at Hogwarts do you think Dumbledore got on least with?
I don't know if I agree with Slughorn or Trelawney. I mean he seemed to be good natured with everyone. I think it would have to be Dolores Umbridge. I mean she was constantly trying to undermine his authority and was after his job eventually. The only reason DD put up with her behavior was because he was so busy trying to fight Voldemort and be sure that Harry was safe that year that he didn't have time to throw Umbridge out on her keester. Anyways, Albus was always so good natured that I think he would make an effort to get along with everyone.

I know what you mean.. in his latter years he had gained enough experience and was calm and wise enough to realise that clashing with work colleges only makes things difficult. But in his younger years, before he was the Dumbledore that we know today, I do think those two may have been the ones that he might clash with.
More recently, i think his feelings towards those two probably were more like an adult would look down on a child.. not in a condescending way, just for example, with slughorn, Dumbledore wouldn't actively go against the slug club, as it would undermine slughorn, however he may look at what slughorn and smile to himself..you know what i mean.. or am i talking rubbish??
(as for Umbridge.. I kinda forgot about her.. as she was only there for one year and was the 'baddy'.. but yes that would be another one that dumbledore would clash with. Though, unlike the others, he probably genuinely disliked Umbridge, rather than just an occasional moment of friction.)

I also have a question. I saw on the VTM home page that JKR said she would apologize to DD for "outting" him. What does everyone think about that? Do you think DD would accept her apology? Do you think he would have been upset to begin with that JKR spilled the beans on his secret?

oh well probably he would just mind his outing because it is a private thing actually but as DD is a very strong character he wouldnt be ashamed that he was outed..maybe just a little uncomfortable as people like Rita Skeeter would just die to interview him on that and a lot of public attention would be drawn on him...so yeah he wouldnt be that much upset maybe...just a little annoyed by all the questoins

As for the other point-
Do you think DD would accept her apology? Do you think he would have been upset to begin with that JKR spilled the beans on his secret?
Yes.. I think he would be very upset- that Jk decided to 'release' this information...
You know- information that has no evidence supporting it, adds nothing to the plot and doesn't aid the reader in any way, seems to have been created purely to appeal to fans that want some sort of politically correct.. 'equality' statement or something.. and.. maybe i should stop.
Ok.. hypothetically , if it was true, I don't think he would be too angry, because he is used to people exploiting every part of his private life for their own purpose. Maybe he would be slightly disappointed, not for himself but disappointed that people still felt that parts of his past were still worth gossiping about. He may have also been quite worried that people would think differently of him, as though a single part of his character would change his entire person. But then, as with the realease of the information about his involvement in his sisters death and even just the friendship with grindlewald, people would change their views, especially if they weren't privy to all of the information.

Thanks amanda for the help.. you know what its like when you havent even got time to eat.. let alone post as often as one should! tongue.gif

Which teacher at Hogwarts do you think Dumbledore got on least with?
I think he liked all of the teachers at Hogwarts. If he couldn't work with them, he wouldn't have hired them, you know what I mean?

Personally, though, the one exception is Professor Umbridge. She tortured the students, didn't teach them much of anything, took away most if not all of their freedoms, and was basically placed in Hogwarts to spy on Dumbledore in the first place. All of these reasons would make it very hard for him to get along with her.

Although, somehow, I can't picture Dumbledore getting in a shouting match with anyone. But that's just me.

No way! Knowing DD, he was probably proud to show that he was gay and not be embarrassed about it. He has like, no embarrassing moments! Plus he probably knows thats not going to change much. A few people might be suprised but for the most part they'll keep on lovin him!
Like a few of you said, he might be a TINY bit uncomfortable, but I know he won't show it. Just like he didn't care in OOtP, he most likely won't care much now.

I suppose I should answer my own question. Would Dumbledore accept JKRs apology for outing him the way she did? Not right away. You all remember how he agreed to help Severus and meet with him and still looked at him with revulsion saying 'you disgust me'? I think over time as those two worked together, only then did Albus see the goodness in Severus and accept his reasons for prior action. I think this is how is would be or similarly with JKR. It would take time for Albus to believe her motives were not to bring about his destruction but to create an understanding between the character she wrote and the readers who have grown to love him.

Clara, I think that is a great idea with the anagrams! We need a few more contributors though so come out come out whereever you are hiding, Dumbledore fans.

Welcome forsaken_wolfess.. your answer got me thinking, your link between Dumbledore's dislike of Umbridge.. and her taking away students' freedoms.
So, this topic is going to be freedom somebody, somewhere, do a task or two!

Dumbledore places a huge value on freedom. Freedom of choice, thought, freedom in society and in the learning of magic.. everything. I know most people feel the need for freedom.. but his seems very strong.
1) Where do you think this stems from?
personally I think it was from the fact that he was so trapped in his mind.. by guilt and fear. Either that, or some of the disasterous events of his childhood.

2) We all have places where we feel very free. Mine is a fictional world.. for some people it is a room, for others a place, for others it is just something they imagine. Describe dumbledore's "Free place"

3) Find/or create (preferably create) an icon, poem, short story.. anything that relates to dumbledore and his freedom. They can be fan created, or a poem could be a poem written unrelated to HP, but that you feel has some relationship/ importance.
any original pieces, plus any non-hp poems that are not copywrited or whatever, probably will be featured on the site.

4) If dumbledore had to set one death eater free from Azkaban, which one he have to chose, and why?? (and NOT Sirius).

There.. I think thats something for everybody.. you dont have to do them all.. just whatever takes your fancy!

Amanda, glad you think the anagram-y thing was a good idea, I'd like to do something like that.. maybe it might be possible with this new topic if not the disguise topic.. Ill keep my eyes open!

~Clara,
I noticed you set forth a couple of activities and they are fantastic. I will have to have a go at a couple of them later however, this particular statement has caught my attention and for the love of Merlin I can't seem to just let it go.
I have a hard time with this. I somehow don't see Dumbledore in this light at the moment and maybe you or another member could enlighten me here. All my narrowmindedness sees right now is all the lack of freedoms Albus imposed upon those around him. Immediately I think of Sirius and his vibrant, fiery self feeling like a prisioner in his own home. Being told to hide out and not join in the battle which is something we all know that Sirius would have done.
I also think of Harry. Somehow Dumbledore didn't give him a choice with many things as well. Dumbledore could have been honest with Harry if not from the beginning certainly at the end of his fifth year and then let Harry choose if he would join the Order, choose who he would learn Occlumency from. Does this make sense? If freedom was such a high priority for Dumbledore he may have started a little closer to home with his closest friends and peers and students instead of I daresay, putting on a front for Muggle and house elf rights.
Don't get me wrong, I am not anti Dumbledore at this point. I am merely pointing out that perhaps Dumbledore had a double standard.
Veritaserum14
1. Where do you think this stems from?
I think that Dumbledore's need for freedom stems from the hardships of his childhood; and the fact that he was so chained up and there wasn't really much that he could do about it. Dumbledore had to make alot of difficult choices; he gave up his freedom so that he could take care of his family, I believe that he values freedom so strongly because he believes that no witch or wizard or muggle deserves to be relieved of the rights that they deserve. It could have also come from the fact that Dumbledore was "free but everywhere in chains."

2. Describe Dumbledore's free place.
Most would disagree but I believe that Dumbledore's free place was his mind. When you analyze it this is what you come up with: Dumbledore's mind was full of his thoughts and his ideas but also the things that he found most valueable (his memories). And with the Pensieve, he could review the memories that mattered most to him. In his mind he was free to think and do whatever he pleased. Dumbledore's wisdom, fueled his mind creating a place that he could turn to whenever there was a rough spot or a problem.
If we look into it in detail, in HPDH, when some of Dumbledore's past is revealed, his friendship with Grindelwald was the only thing he had that kept him young. The ideas that they came up with were their own personal means of stepping out from the real world and looking at the possibility of something better. When his sister (the squib) died, however, it triggered in him the desire to fight for the rights and freedom of squibs, muggles, muggle-borns, and not-so-talented witches and wizards.

3. Here's a poem that I created in honor of Dumbledore's wisdom/freedom.

Wisdom is Freedom

Wisdom is the freedom that we get when we learn
When we process new ideas and to visit new places we yearn
Wisdom is the freedom, we have that no one can remove
Wisdom is the freedom to do as we choose

Wisdom is the freedom that lets us spread our wings
The sky is the limit when it comes to doing new things
Wisdom is the key to a place that we can go
Whenever all else fails and freedom doesn't show

We can use our wisdom to do alot of things,
To accomplish new accomplishments
And be as free as we choose to be,
When we choose to use our wisdom
as a chance to be finally free.

4. And finally, the death eater that I believe Dumbledore would have chosen to release, had he had the chance, would probably have been Lucius Malfoy, (before the mass breakout and before Snape killed Dumbledore). My reasoning behind this choice is: he knew that Draco was trying to kill him, he also knew that Draco would not succeed and that this was Voldemort's way of getting even with Lucius for what happened at the Ministry in OOTP. I think that had he had the chance he would have set Lucius free, and offer him protection and the chance to do something right.

Well, those are my thoughts on the subject of Dumbledore's freedom and I hope I have the chance to participate in other/further discussions about my hero: Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore.

Veritaserum14! That was great! Thanks loads for your contributions, and I hope you enjoyed the activities!

Amanda...
I guess that may be true, it is definitely more complicated than black and white- but then it always is with Dumbledore. I think I look at his ultimate goals, what he is trying to achieve, and the things that seem to mean most to him. All of the things he is and has been aiming for revolve around freedom- from the War against voldemort, to his battle against the condemnation and persecution of 'mudbloods' and magical creatures, and the freedom to learn magic. And then in his own mind, he seems to strive for freedom because he has been plagued by guilt and remorse for so long.

True, as you have pointed out the means aren't always 'free', but it was always aiming for freedom as the result. Maybe it is personal, I tend to condone the means, within reason of course, if the end result is reached.
Dumbledore caused a lot of people around him to become trapped. Both Sirius and Severus were trapped, but it was supposed to be temporary, they had to remian hidden to remain alive, and their true freedom would come to them in time.. and they wouldn't have to worry about being seen and their 'safety' comprimised.
I think of the future, how i get there and the journey I make defines my future.. but Im always aiming for something. I wouldn't say that this is always a good thing, far from it.. But i believe Dumbledore was the same, especially when he was under strain and pressure. He had to aim for a brighter future, because it was the only way to survive. To fight each day without care for the future would get people around him killed.

So.. where was I.. oh yes, a very long winded way of me saying that whilst his actions in the present may have been restraining, he was always aiming towards freedom, and that was his ultimate goal. Thats why I personally, believe freedom to be something he valued above most other things.

****

I will do some of the activities after a few more people have done them.. I really want to see what people come up with!!

If I can just for a second take myself out of reality and imagine Dumbledore fumming with J.K. laugh.gif *I can do this far to well than his healthy.* laugh.gif I would say yes, he probably would be I think Dumbledore is a rather private person in a very open way. He is not worried what others think of him but I do think it effects him. So I don't think he'd appercaite secrets like that being spilt out by someone. I mean if you wish to tell somone generally we do it ourselves. I know he can fight of the insults but what would effect him I think would be the way in which everyone found out.

Veritaserum14 - That Dumbledore wisdom poem, was very well done and powerful. I really liked it. biggrin.gif

Hmmm, I agree with Veritserum 14 in saying that Dumbledore's mind is a good choice for his free place however also want to propose that Dumbledore was most free at Hogwarts. It was there that he was free from the pressure of his disappointing family life and pressures of his "crazy" sister. It was at Hogwarts where Dumbledore stretched his limits intellectually. It was at Hogwarts where he became a teacher and could freely teach techniques to impressionable young witches and wizards. It was at Hogwarts where as Headmaster he did the most good in protecting Harry as best he could and the order. By taking the post at Hogwarts instead of Minister of Magic, Dumbledore avoided most of the politics and power that corrupted Cornelius Fudge and was able to fight for muggle rights and house elf rights. Yes, I think Hogwarts is a good choice.

I think I look at his ultimate goals,

True, as you have pointed out the means aren't always 'free', but it was always aiming for freedom as the result.

Unfortunately I think of the many people in leadership with in the 20th century alone and discover that even though they had an ultimate goal and that they aimed for freedom, freedom was subjective. Hitler saw freedom from the Jews that he claimed plagued the earth. Do you see my point? Yes, Dumbledore's aim seems to have been pointing towards freedom but at what cost? Whose? Incidentally, Snape was trapped of his own doing, not cause of DD's freedom chase. Sirius on the other hand was trapped unjustly by DD's freedom means and most regrettably it was the wrong choice that DD made in that instance.

Pssst? Is anyone out there? The last post was four days ago and I did that one? Did we all forget about Dumbledore or is our conversation a bit stale? Well, let me ask a question then.

We all know that Dumbledore said he never hoped to know all of the secrets of Hogwarts Castle. We know he didn't know where the Chamber of Secrets was. We know he knew about the Room of Requirement. What other secrets of Hogwarts do you think Dumbledore didn't know about? What secrets do you think he did know?

Discuss!
