I was wondering.. when Hermione goes for the first year to hogwarts, she has all her stuff and more. Did she buy those on Diagon Alley? And how did she get there? Did she knew about the wall in that cafe/hotel, or did somebody took her there? And when se's there with her parents [part 2], how did she get there -again, and with her parents? just a few questions.. tongue.gif

Well i'm not sure, but i think that possible when the first year muggle born get their letters, there is more information. In the second book Hermione was school shopping with her parents, and mr weasley was talking to them.
MoonLight
yeah I thought of that too.. but then again: she didn't have a wand or something to tick on the wall. Maybe there are other entries.. Do you think Arthur gave picked them up from somewhere and took them to Diagon Alley then? I remember him talking to them about rubber duckies xP

I think someone must meet the Muggleborn kids to take them into Diagon Alley. Maybe a wizard/witch even goes to their house, I mean it must be hard to believe for some people. Some families wouldn't believe in magic and Hogwarts unless they saw magic right?

As for CoS I guess once you get in once you know where it is and how to go. Hermione and her parents could have just gone to Leaky Couldron and Hermione could've opened the door to Diagon. Did her parents actualy go into the alley or did they stay at Leaky? I don't remember. blink.gif

The answer to that is simple. Somebody, probably Professor McGonagall or Professor Flitwick, took Hermione to Diagon Alley and helped her get her money and supplies, just as how Hagrid took Harry there. And we see Dumbledore offering to take Riddle to Diagon Alley in the memory in HBP. They don't leave the Muggle-born or Muggle-raised students to fend for themselves. Some adult wizard or witch takes them around.

somewhere it said that someone from hogwarts helps out the muggleborns. but how did her parents get to diagon alley?
PottyHead
I just found this on Wikipedia that answers your question

QUOTE
A magical quill at Hogwarts detects the birth of magical children, and writes their names into a large parchment book.[10] Every year, a teacher (in recent years, Professor McGonagall) checks this book and sends a letter to the children who will have turned eleven years old by 31 August. Acceptance or declination of a place at Hogwarts must be posted by 31 July. The letter also contains a list of supplies like spell books, uniform, and other things that the student will need. The prospective student is expected to buy all the necessary materials, normally from shops in Diagon Alley, a concealed street near Charing Cross Road in London found behind a pub by the name of The Leaky Cauldron. Students who cannot afford their supplies can receive financial aid from the school, as was the case with the young orphan Tom Riddle.

Letters to Muggle-born witches and wizards, who may not be aware of their powers and are unfamiliar with the concealed wizarding world, are delivered in person by a member of Hogwarts staff, who then explain to the parents/guardians about magical society, and reassure them regarding this news[HP7]. They also assist the family in regards to buying supplies and gaining access to Diagon Alley.

And in regard to how did Hermione's parents get there, I doubt the teacher would take the child there on their own, they probably take the whole family so that they can explain in further detail what their child essentially is... if you get me

Yeah PottyHead's right. It says that a member of staff comes with their first letter. This person would probably show the with/wizard how to get in Diagon Alley and all of that stuff.

Well, in DH it states that if you're a muggle-born then a teacher comes to your house to give you your letter to inform your parents. I'm sure they would have told her how to get all of her stuff, or they might have (like Dumbledore offered to Riddle) gone with her...
forsaken_wolfess
My guess, amortentia_149, is that you're right. One of the teachers probably showed her the first time. She probably would have accepted the offer, unlike Riddle. After first year, she probably took her parents and they all went together, with Hermione leading the way.

That is my theory as well, remember when Dumbledore offered to accompany Tom Riddle also know as Voldemort (I couldn't resist and for some reason I find it funny that I did the also known as thing ha ha) to Diagon Alley and Riddle said no. I would think one of the head of houses would take the students to Diagon Alley. My first guess would be McGonagall but I am thinking Flitwick because he would make the trip more fun but still manage to keep to schedule and McGonagall might frighten some kids with her strictness.

Yes, I think that they would have sent a teacher to escort them. By the quote that PottyHead put up from Wikipedia that pretty much seals it and well thats how muggle-borns gain access to diagon alley. As simple as that biggrin.gif

That was some pretty cool information you found there, PottyHead. I had always kind of wondered how the muggle born found out how to get into Diagon Alley and got wizard money, but what you found explains it all! biggrin.gif Too cool!

Yeah I think Kelly (PottyHead) hit the nail on the head there...most muggle born children's parents probably wouldn't be in a rush to just send their kid off some whack job insisting that magic is real and their child is a witch/wizard. They would need more reassurances that this isn't some scam so they would come with the teacher and student to Diagon alley to see for themselves that this is real.
Harry James Potter
Yeah, Kelly is correct.

In DH, the aprt that was referred to earlier...is when Severus is young and is talking to Lily. He says at some point in time during the memories, that a staff member comes to your house to explain everything to you so the muggles and the parents know it's real.

Also, yes, you could ahve deduced this from Dumbledore going to Tom.

Dumbledore went to the orphanage Riddle was; he talked with him explaining everything he could do, why he was like that, the things he wasn't allowed to do; and then offered himself to go with him to Diagon Alley. Riddle refused, so how he got there?

In the case of Hermione, I assume McGonagall went to her home to talk with her parents. I was thinking that it's likely she went with them to Diagon Alley, at least just to let them in or something, but ... not even a witch can do such a thing as visit you-guess-how-many muggle-born kids the same day. Do you reckon she went little by little, I mean, for example, that day, the kids in these area; and like that?
I can't see McGonagall taking like, at least, 10 kids plus their families to the alley. And I can't see all the staff of teachers going; I suppose it's only the submistress duty. Maybe she did do what I said above, but just explained them how to arrive to the Leaky Cauldron and told them to ask for Tom, the bartender. He could let them in.
