Full Version: Did They Over-do The Kiss
Veritaserum Forums > Movies > Order of the Phoenix
No George without Fred
I personaly thought it wasn't akward enough. Like it didn't capture the feeling right. I don't think that that moment, along with many other moments in other movies, transitions all that well from book to film because you can't 'read' the main charecters thoughts. Vote and please explain you reasoning!!! (does anyone think they sould have left it out of the movie?)

Yeah. I wasn't pleased with that scene at all. I had been hoping that they would have omitted that scene entirely. I kinda had a feeling that they wouldn't. It was way too long for one thing. As I was watching I had thought it was over, then the camera moved and it the scene continued forever. It was annoying. It should have been awkward. It wasn't at all. Much too smooth. It look rehearsed. happy.gif No duh! But they should have made it so that they faltered and didn't make it so long. It would have been better if they had left it out.

Wow, what a great topic! I can't believe there are actually other people out there who didn't like it - everybody I talk to are always like 'ahh it was so cute/amazing/real!' but I thought it was completely overdone, and distracted the whole plot of the story to this one little kiss. Thank heavens there are people who think the same as me!

I completely agree, it would have been better if it was scrapped entirely. I mean, JKR didn't include the kiss - we knew it was there, and personally, I think that's enough. Now, why didn't they do it like that in the film? I think the relationships are pulling away from the real plot of the books/films and the reltionships are ruining the actual magic of Harry Potter - and no, I do not mean the magic you find when you kiss someone tongue.gif

Nasuada - I totally agree with it being 'rehearsed'. For god's sake, we don't go round rehearsing kisses before we do it! It comes naturally, and I think th the OotP kiss was far too 'perfect' for Harry Potter.

And what annoys me more is that we have more of this to come for the Ron/Lavender kiss in HBP. The only kiss I'm looking forward to is the R/Hr in DH, and until then, all we have is R/L and H/G. Booo mad.gif

Oooh boy! I've got quite a bit to rant about on this one. But I'll limit myself. wink.gif

So, from the start; I saw the movie, well, the kiss specifically, and I was like- oooh, romantic, cute, etc. I loved the ambiance, and the background music, it was calm and romantic and I was happy overall with how they did it. There was just one teenee problem- only one. I just thought it was too long! Like, I watched it not long ago and I was like- man, they're just standing there kissing for like 2 minutes! Haha, I just found it was sort of long, well very long, but it was nice either way. smile.gif

I thought the kiss was perfect! Sure it was probably a bit too long and it could of been more awkward, but I was loving every minute of it. For once, all the publicity and talk about the kiss lived up to what it really was. I wasn't disappointed at all. In fact, I was even a bit surprised. I disagree that it should have been left out because after all, it was Harry's first kiss, it's not something that could just be tossed aside. Eventhough it really isn't that important or relevant to the plot, the directors would have been absolutely horrible and completely out of their minds just to exclude it.

I kind of feel though that if it was R/Hr or H/G with that drawn out kiss shown in the movies that people wouldn't be complaining. I think that a lot of the reason that some people have a problem with the H/C kiss is because it wasn't their ship.

That is true, I really wasn't a fan of the Harry/Cho ship, but still, the kiss was really overdone in my opinion. If it was the Hermione/Ron ship, I think they could get away with it being long, since so many people can't wait to see it BUT with this kiss being so minor I can't believe how much they've drawn it out.

I was expecting just a 2 second thing, but not a 2 minute one where by the end of it you're tearing your hair out in boredom. I know a lot of people loved it so much, but most of the reason why I don't like it is because of how big of a deal they've made out of such a little kiss. I just think it was unnecessary to make it as huge as it was, and I bet you anything they don't even make the Ron/Hermione kiss as big as this.

It was toatlly overdone. It should have been filmed exactly as it was written in the book. They're under the miseltoe, they go in for the kiss and...cut! Harry walks into Gryffindor common room to greet Haermione and Ron who are eagerly waiting for his return and all the juicey gossip about it being wet! We didn't need to see something long and drawn out, it was too.....much! Oh and by the way, I don't ship......

Well, hate to sound like a broken record (in comparison to the majority), but I think the kiss was a bit much, too. Cho wasn't even crying, either. I have to agree with Elaine. They should have kept it by the book instead of turning it into a smooch fest. Granted, it was Harry's "first kiss", but it is no where near relevant to the main plot. Just having Harry talk about it afterwards to Ron and Hermione would have been sufficient enough.
Nymphadora Lupin
See, that's what I was trying to say above - it wasn't even in the book, so why include it? I think it's Yates (I always blme Yates, but this time, I really mean it) because this is the first film where the plot is drawn away from by the 'relationship/teenage problems' and this is also the first film which Yates has directed. I just think there isn't enough sticking to the book, and one of the main things he strayed away from in truth was, obviously, the kiss, which was far too long, far too 'perfect' and just not enough like the book!

At first I thought it was cutie but then it gotten to the point where I started to say to myself 'Ok you guys can stop now' seriously i thought that they were going to face each other. But besides that yes I indeed found it a'little off but at least it wasnt with Ginny...wait darn its going to happen D;
browneyedgirl
i think it was kinda long. if they shortened the scene, it would have been ok. like, him just going in to kiss her, and then maybe film that for like a second, and then go to the shot of the mistletoe. then go to the scene with the trio in the common room.
and the kiss should have been majorly awkward. they looked too comfortable.
E.Austen
Quite overdone. There are only two scenes in Order of the Phoenix which make me cringe and fidget in my seat: Umbridge's torture session (her simpering makes me sick), and the Harry/Cho kiss. We get to that scene and I am right there on Ginny's side when she's watching Harry approaching Cho for a second.

Okay, okay, so maybe it was a bit overdone. happy.gif

See, that's what I was trying to say above - it wasn't even in the book, so why include it?

A lot of things are in the movies and never included in the books, and I would have absolutely hated it if they didn't include the kiss. Eventhough in the book the kiss scene wasn't exactly 'shown' but rather told through Harry, in my mind I was imagining it all happen as I read the book. And in movies, that is exactly what they do. They show us all that we are imagining as we read the books so I'm glad that they included it and gave us the visual. But yeah, it definately could have been more awkward.
emma_weasley
Yeah, I think that it was waaaaaay too long. Seriously, it went on for like two or more minutes and I was getting quite sick of it. And, yeah, as someone said before, it didn't look awkward enough. It was too, I don't know, practiced. Didn't Dan (or someone) say that they shot that scene like 20 times? Basically, I think that they should have either shortened it or just took it out completely.
mrs.harrypotter
i thought tht the kiss waz way over done and then i felt like it really didnt mean anything i waz so strange
crazy4u
I think the kiss was amazing. It was tender, akward enough, cute. wub.gif I was very pleased with it. wub.gif I was expecting it would be very short because they usually shorten the time but this was ok. It was quite romantic.
E.Austen
Here's my rule of thumb: If the kiss has an entire song devoted to it on the soundtrack, it is way overdone.

The Order of the Phoenix soundtrack has just that. It's overdone. Not bad music, but just bad what it's devoted to.
UnknownLocket
Yay! Someone else who liked the kiss as well! biggrin.gif

I expected it to be shortened as well, and eventhough it was sort of overdone, I liked that they made it lengthy. And eventhough it wasn't awkward enough, there was that slight hesitation before the kiss ever happened that to me, I guess it was good enough. It was just a kiss, not much to be picky over so over all, it was satisfactory.
Luna♥Lover
No, there was too little done. They should've shown more signs of their admiration for eachother. I wish they'd put more time into making it a more effective and memorable shot at romance.

True Gryffindor Girl
I thought that it was too long. To make it look more awkward they should have shortened it. I agree that it looks too rehearsed and that the actors weren't showing a lot of emotion. The movie would have been better if they had left it out.
amortentia_149
After watching it, you would probably say that it was way overdone. Even though the book didn't have barely any contribution to the kiss scene other than talking about it with Ron, They didn't have to make it over-dramatic.
Honeybee
I'll have to agree with most of you. I felt that the kiss was overdone. Just think.. If they over did this one, what will it be like when he snogs Ginny. In the book he feels likes he had been kissing her for forever. We'll see...
mrs.harrypotter
Ah I don't want to see Harry kissing Ginny *covers eyes and stabs Ginny* Ok so the kiss was waaay overdone. the whole thing was awkard!!! And I thought they had to make the moment better. I really think they should of left it out because it was meaningless. It shouldn't of been in the book either and I hated that Cho didn't even come back to talk to him. She kind of ignored him. Harry kissed her and she doesn't even say hello or whatever. Cho was rude. and I'm happy Harry didn't ask her out.
honey~pie
It was cute and romantic. But i think it should have been a littttle bit more awkward. Also, i am a NON- H/C shipper, so i had to retch and look away laugh.gif

Also, it should have been a little shorter, because as it was long, it looked less awkward
Smart Owl
Was the kiss overdone?

In the book: no.

In the movie: yes.

Maybe it was the fact that everyone already knew that Cho and Harry wouldn't last. Whatever it was, I almost threw up during that scene. Especially since they kissed right in front of Cedric's picture. I almost expected Cedric to yell,"Hey, could you take that somewhere else?" I seriously would have cheered if that had happened. Or if they had Neville or someone interrupt the kiss. And now that there's kissing in the movies, the really little HP fans who just watch the movies will probably be turned off. I'm glad there were no 5 year olds in the theater when I saw OOTP, otherwise they would have yelled "Ewww!" and started a ruckus.
HJP/HJG_TrueLove
I thought the kiss was way overdone. It wasn't very awkward and it lasted much too long. In the book I got the impression the kiss was little more than a chaste peck considering the lack of context on the kiss itself I guess you have to decide for yourself what the kiss was like.
Luna-Lovegood08
Yes, the kiss was way over done and way too long. In the book, it's supposed to be awkward, but it wasn't. There was no awkwardness at all. The book suggests, like HJP/HJG_TrueLove said, that the kiss was just a peck or if it was a proper kiss, than only a short one. I am no way a Harry/Cho shipper.

I have to say though - I am looking forward to the Harry/Ginny kiss, as I am a Harry/Ginny shipper hehe, and I think the Ron/Lavender kisses will just be plain funny!
