Prologue:
The prospect of going to Hogwarts had always appealed to Scorpius. As soon as he knew what it meant to be a wizard (especially a Malfoy), magic had been his interest. His excitement had grown evermore when he received the official letter. Now he was a 5th year prefect about to fall in love.

Chapter 1 Love at First Sight

When he arrived at Madame Malkins with his mother, he couldn’t believe his eyes, it was love at first sight. Scorpius felt a strong urge to go and talk to her but knew he couldn’t with his mom around. He would bide his time; he couldn’t wait for September 1st, especially not now.

When the shopping was done, he still couldn’t get her out of his head. It was a long while before he heard his mother ask

“Is something the matter dear, you look sick.”

“I assure you mother, it’s nothing, I’m just a bit tense is all.”

“There is more meaning than you’re letting on in your words, son, are you sure you’re alright?”

“I’m fine mother,” he said a tad loudly.

This answer made her drop the question, and she no longer brought up the subject.

The rest of the week went by more quickly than usual; now it was 8:30 on the morning of September 1st, and the Malfoy home was a hectic scene.

When all the bags had been packed and the good-byes said, Draco took his son to the station. It was 10:45 when they arrived at the barrier between platforms 9 and 10 with Scorpius’ belongings in a trolley, and went through.

As soon as they were on platform 9 3/4, Scorpius wished he were invisible; his father sensed that something was wrong, but said nothing. Draco was indeed correct in assuming his son was nervous, Scorpius had seen her there and she had actually smiled at him.

On the train, he bumped into her again; this time, however, neither of his parents were around, so he could now approach her freely.

“Hi,” he said casually.

“Oh, hello there,” she replied meekly.

“I’m Scorpius, and you are?”

“I see you’re a prefect,” she avoided the question.

"Oh this,"he regarded the gleaming badge on his chest, "that’s nothing really. But you haven’t told me your name."

“My name is Athena,” she said holding out her hand. He took it in his own and kissed it softly.

“Pleased to meet you, Athena.”

“The pleasure is entirely my own, Scorpius” and she went to join her friends in their compartment. He watched her walk away with her friends for a long time. When they were gone, he began patrolling the train corridors.

The scarlet steam engine slowed to a stop, the Hogwarts Express had arrived at Hogsmeade Station.

As the hordes of students filed out of the train, he directed them half-heartedly; he hadn’t seen Athena get off. When all the first year students had been directed to the boats, he found an empty carriage and rode toward the school all the while thinking about her.

During the Feast, he ignored the puddings, so as to have a better chance of looking for her, but she wasn’t to be found anywhere at the Slytherin table. Finally, tired of looking around, he caught her eye, she was sitting at the Ravenclaw table, talking animatedly to her friends. They pointed him out to her, but he looked away.

This was truly regrettable because he knew it could never be, his parents would never accept her, she was not a Slytherin. He had gone head over heels for the wrong girl; and now he must try to forget her, or should he?

Chapter 2 Mission Impossible

The following day proved to be a difficult one for them both,

She couldn't stop thinking about him. For one odd reason or another, she kept rubbing the hand he'd kissed against her cheek; there was something about him that made her lose herself.

She kept making a mess of the simplest spells during Charms, all her potions looked ghastly, and it was all because of him.

One thing that bothered her, however, was that, during the feast he'd looked away from her, she wondered why. Her friends kept telling her that he was just shy, but she couldn't help but think that there was another reason.

Whenever she gathered up enough nerve to go and talk to him, she'd find herself backing away; he was always surrounded. She knew that fearing his friends wouldn't get her very far along in finding out more about him, but it was just so hard.
***
If there was one word that could sum up everything that he felt it would be: confusion. He was unsure of wether his feelings for her were purely physical or had a meaning. He didn't know how to tell her about himself and the reason it couldn't work.

This was more due to the fact that he wanted it to work, than to lack of words. He didn't want to hurt her feelings. After the incident at the feast he'd only caught glimpses of her from behind his 'friends'.

Sure, he wanted to tell them about her but knew he couldn't. Whenever he tried, he gave up after the first few words, the thought of her made him feel incapable and his friends always changed the subject anyway.

But he was a Malfoy and she was in Ravenclaw, and he felt that his parents would never accept any girl except a Slytherin. He tried to forget about Athena but found it an impossible feat.
***
As time passed they both came to disregard the opinions of their friends and began meeting in secret places around the castle every night without fail; the events of one such meeting were quite alarming:

"So, does this mean we're 'together'?

"We're together now, aren't we?"

"That's not what I meant, Scorpius. I mean, well--you know--secret meetings, all this mystery, I just wish we didn't have to hide; what does it mean?"

"Do you really want to know the truth, this---is a lie, it can never be, you and I are far too different to make this anything more than a fantasy," he sighed.

"I'm a Malfoy, this isn't real, I'm kidding myself, and hurting you in the process. If you want to stop meeting in secret, then it can't work."

"But---what? Are you telling me that this means nothing to you, all because of some---last name?

"No, I--it's not that, I just didn't think you--?

"Didn't think I what--would care about you because you are a Malfoy and in Slytherin, that doesn't matter to me, Scorpius, but if it means that much more to you than, us; I have to go."

He stayed behind for a few moments, allowing her to drift away, thinking all the while about the mistake he'd just made.

Back in his Slytherin dormitory, he couldn't sleep, he kept thinking about her words, they had pierced him and awoken within him a sleeping passion, he didn't care what his parents or anyone else thought, he did not care for the 'social status' he was expected to maintain. His feelings for her were stronger, more meaningful; and he would do everything in his power to prove it to her. To her and to the world.

Chapter 4 First Kiss

The next morning, Athena was determined to avoid him. When he entered the Great Hall, he looked positively dreadful, like he hadn’t slept very well. But she couldn’t let herself show worry; not after what had happened the previous night. She broke her promise to avoid him soon enough, she didn’t want to, but the urge to find out more had consumed her such as weeds consume a garden. The desire to talk to him came unbidden.

She had told her friends about him, who he was; they didn’t seem to mind so much about the fact that he was in Slytherin, it was the “Malfoy” that hadn’t completely registered with them. They had told her that he had let her go because she wasn’t good enough for him and the ‘Malfoy’ men never held on to a girl for very long. To him, according to her friends, she was just another misadventure.

“He’ll tell you he doesn’t want to hurt you but it can’t work because… Are you even listening to us, Athena?”

She wasn’t; she was looking at him with a far-off look in her eyes. “Daydreaming again, girl, you got it bad for that boy.” They made to leave the Great Hall, but she didn’t follow. “I’ll catch up with you guys later.” The group of Ravenclaw girls was doubtful but they exited anyway, just as she made her way on cautious steps toward the Slytherin table.

When he saw her approaching, he signaled her to sit down: she thought this an odd request as there were still people there and they were staring, but she took a seat next to him nevertheless.

“We need to talk.”

“I know, Athena—about last night…”

She put her finger to his lips to silence him.

“In private, meet me after Herbology, we’ll talk then.”

***

He arrived a little early at the accorded meeting place, the Room of Requirement. When he’d entered the room, this was what met his eyes as the product of “A place to talk privately”: The room had fashioned itself into what a common room might be; comfortable, peaceful, inviting. Only instead of being crammed with chintz armchairs and mahogany tables; the only furniture to be found was a two-seater sofa, complete with soft, fluffed cushions. It was positioned at an angle in front of an ornately carved, marble fire-place. The overall effect was quite charming.

He sat and waited; after Herbology (the last class of the day and the only one they had together), she had said she would go change into something more comfortable. Then he heard footsteps outside and someone calling his name faintly at first and progressively louder. He stepped outside and crashed into her head-on, both landed in a heap on the floor. They picked themselves up, laughing heartily, and re-entered the room.

“Listen, about last night, I didn’t mean for things to turn out the way they did; I was thinking about you all of last night and I came to the conclusion that my feelings for you are much stronger than I led you to believe, and—I’m sorry. I hope you can find it in you to forgive me; I’d understand if you can’t, I have been a total jerk to you.”

“Oh. Scorpius, of course, I forgive you, it was my entire fault I shouldn’t have walked out on you when all you were trying to do was tell me how you feel. I know how hard it must have been; truth is I couldn’t stop thinking about you either.”

“I shouldn’t have phrased it the way I did, so strangely, I had a feeling you would have some sort of bad reaction. To be completely honest, the whole ‘mystery’ was killing me too; I think I’m ready to let the world know how I feel about you.”

“Scorpius, are you…” she couldn’t finish the question, she just wanted to kiss him so badly—all those nights alone hadn’t really led to much—she couldn’t stop herself. He made no move to try to stop her; they sat there for a long time, in each others arms, sharing the first of many kisses that would change everything.
Veritaserum14
Chapter 5 "Scorpius"

Kissing her felt so right; it was a feeling beyond anything he had ever experienced. He felt like there was some connection between them; like they belonged together.

The word spread quickly through the school that Scorpius Malfoy was dating Athena of Ravenclaw. They didn’t try to hide from the stares or the comments that seemed to follow them everywhere they went.

As for her, whenever she was with him she was home. The night that they’d shared their first kiss in the Room of Requirement, had told her a lot about him; he had said more with that kiss than he ever would with words.
Now that they were together—without having to hide from anyone—they were both a lot happier than ever.

They were standing in a corridor hidden behind a tapestry of a fruit bowl; they met here every night after their homework was done.

“Athena, now that the mystery is gone, I feel like I should tell you something that has been at the top of my thoughts lately.”

“What is it Scorpius—if it’s about how your friends treat me, it’s fine, I don’t care as long as I’m with you—I know they can’t stand to see us—like this.”

“No, it’s not that, and they aren’t my friends, they’re just a bunch of Slytherin guys who can’t find girls as perfect as you. But that’s not what I wanted to tell you. I just…well I wanted to tell you…what I wanted to say is: I love you. And I don’t care what anyone thinks; I love you Athena.”

“Oh, Scorpius, that’s so sweet, I don’t know what to say.”

“You don’t have to say anything…” he pulled her close and kissed her with an even greater passion than before. A passion that confirmed that the words he’d said—that he loved her—were true.

She wished she could make the moment last forever but knew that such a thing was impossible. When he finally pulled away, she was breathless; all she could say was:

“Scorpius”

He cleared his throat: “So, uhhh, do you want me to walk you to your common room?”

She nodded and rested her head on his shoulder; they walked in this manner all the way up to Ravenclaw Tower.

As he made his way back down to the dungeons, he couldn’t get her out of his head: her smell, her voice, the way she said his name, the feel of her close to him.

He didn’t know what had driven him to kiss her—it was usually she that made the first move; but tonight had somehow been different. Something about her had made him do it.

He slept soundly that night with her beautiful grey eyes watching over him in his dreams.

Chapter 6 Draco is Informed

When she had arrived at the door of Ravenclaw Tower, she had taken a good, long while to answer the question that would grant her access to the common room. Finally she arrived at the dormitory that housed the 5th year Ravenclaw girls, and when he r friends inquired about her whereabouts she didn't anser. She merely made her way to her four-poster and lay there with the ghost of his mouth on hers and the memory of his arms around her; in this way she eventually fell asleep.

On Saturday morning, both arrived at the Great Hall in a sort of trance. He recovered first and walked toward the group of Ravenclaw girls.

"Good Morning, ladies, do you mind if I take Athena off your hands for a moment?"

"Hi Scorpius," they said in unison. Then they sort of pushed her toward him before entering the Great Hall. "Hey, about---what happened last night" they began at the same time.

"....Scorpius, I couldn't stop thinking about you all night; about what you said; and I just want to let you know that I feel the same way."

"Well, I couldn't stop thinking about you either, let's have some breakfast, then we can meet in the Room of Requirement so we can talk more comfortably.

After breakfast, he waited for her to leave then left the Great Hall after her. When he caught up to her, he noticed she was crying. "What's wrong?"

"It's nothing, just...nothing." "Will it make you feel better if we sudied for our OWLS ?" he knew how much she loved to study, it would take her mind off whatever was troubling her.

"I'll go get my books, Room of Requirement at noon?"

"Sure, see you in a few."

They both went to their respective common rooms. But while she was busy gathering textbooks, quills, and parchment; he was writing a letter to his father:

Dad,

You know that girl we saw at the station when school started, her name is Athena, she's really smart (it's thanks to her, I'm doing good in Herbology), beautiful, and cares about me (not who my dad is). Here's the thing she's in Ravenclaw, but you know how I feel about the girls in Slytherin (all they care about is themselves and how rich and famous I am) I know that we have an image to maintain but can't things be different?

Your Son,
Scorpius Malfoy

He folded the parchment and tied it to the owl's leg; then he grabbed a couple of books after realizing that it was very nearly noon, and headed for the Room of Requirement. She was waiting for him with an armload of books; when they walked in they were in combination common room, with banners from both of their houses.

They sat and began working: they practiced spells, went over basic potion ingredients, and reviewed the names of basic healing plants and their properties. It was 3:00 by the time they decided they could use a break from note-taking.

"Thanks, Scorpius, you always seem to know how to cheer me up"

"No problem, say Athena can I ask you something?"

"You just did but you can ask me somthing else."

"Oh, you and your jokes. Do you trust me?"

"Of course I do, why do you ask that?"

"Because we need to talk about what's bothering you, what happened, did I do something wrong?"

"It's not you, it'll never be you, it's just that nobody ever made me feel the way you do, you're the first person, my age that makes me feel loved and I don't know, I guess I'm just afraid to get hurt."

"I would never do anything to hurt you, Athena."

He moved closer and let her cry on his shoulder until she could cry no more.

Chapter 7 A Letter and A Fight

When she strolled into the Ravenclaw common room, Georgia bounded on her instantly in a hysterical fit of questions

"You were crying, why were you crying; oh my gosh, he broke up with you, oh you poor thing. Don't worry, we'll get back at him."

"Georgia, calm down, you're going to hurt yourself; for your information, no he didn't break up with me; he loves me , and I love him. I'm just a big baby, I cry a lot. We were just studying and then I just lost it that's all."

"Okay. Okay. Geez. Why were you crying anyway?"

"Oh, tears of joy.....he makes me so happy, so blissfully happy, he makes me feel so alive "

"Well, we'll see how 'alive' you feel after tommorow's Charms lesson, we're supposed to vanish a stack of books."

"I'm not worried." Long after everyone had gone to bed, Athena sat curled in front of the fire thinking of him. And in the Slytherin common room he lay thinking of her.
*****
It had been a whole month and Scorpius still hadn't heard from his father, he was not expecting a reply by now, so he was a bit shocked to find a lengthy letter on his pillow that afternoon:

Scorpius Son,

I haven't been able to answer your letter until now because at first I found it difficult to stomach. Just the thought that she is most likely not of the true blood was enough to throw anyone off. But then I reread that last part and I realized things can and should be different. There are not many 'PureBlood' wizards left anyhow.

Your statement about the Slytherin girls too is no lie: I once knew a girl in Slytherin who used to be my girlfriend, and she made my days at Hogwarts a living hell. Then I met your mother; I realize now that you are my son and that I as your father should support your decision. I wish my own father would have been better at his job.

Son there is something I never told you, I was a Death Eater once; that was my choice and it ruined a good two years of my life too. All I can say now is: this is your choice, whether you choose to stick with that choice is entirely up to you.

Your Father,
Draco Malfoy

He felt tears in his eyes, but did not suppress them. He had been wrong to think that his father would not see things his way. Sure it had taken him time to do it, but in the end, love for his son had won out.

When he finished reading, he wiped his tears away with the sleeve of his robes and went to find Athena. When he caught up to her, he showed her the letter without thinking.

"What's this," after she read it her expression went from curious to furious "Oh, now I see it, you had to ask for your father's consent was that it, so then everything you have done, everything you have said, that has meant absolutely nothing to you? Oh of all the.....I should have known, my friends warned me about you, but I, being stupid enough to believe you ever cared about me, didn't listen to them."

"And you had to ask your friends for advice, I'm that bad of a person, is that it? Why, Athena? Why can't you understand how I'm feeling right now, how much it hurts?

He took the letter and stormed off shouting "I thought I meant more to you than this, I thought you loved me."

Chapter 8 If you really love him

"All he was trying to do was be completly honest with you, no secrets, no strings attached. He just wanted to show you something that was important to him, and you pushed him away. Those words he said to you, the last time, they had sincerity in them. If you really loved him like you said you did; don't you think he deserves better from you? Don't you think that you're taking this a bit too far, Athena? You won't even talk to or even look at him and when you do, there is such hate in your eyes as you wouldn't believe if you saw yourself."

"Oh, you do like to exagerate, don't you, he's completly fine. I don't think it an overreaction to demonstrate anything but total loathing for someone such as himself; and didn't you read that letter? His father thinks I'm; how did he put it again, ah yes, 'difficult to stomach'. I really don't think that the son of someone so...deprived...will ever really love anyone."

"Listen to yourself, you sound a lot worse than Mr. Malfoy, you're acting like it's such a big deal that he's pureblood and you're not ; it never mattered before, that you were muggleborn, and didn't you read the rest of that letter; his father said it was his choice, and that he wasn't going to interfere with his son's feelings for you. Doesn't that tell you anything?"

"That's not the point....." but Georgia had won; Athena knew her friend was right, Scorpius was suffering her rejection of him; he was taking it pretty hard. He really did love her, and here she was calling him names, ignoring his feelings, and insulting his family.
*****
While the two Ravenclaw girls were arguing, Scorpius was thinking; he was thinking hard, about the things that she had said. Why was there a sudden change in her; hadn't they been through a lot together; why was she treating him like...scum; like he was nothing more than a bother, a pebble in her shoe?

Since they had started seeing each other; all of his 'friends' had ceased to acknowledge his existence. He needed support from someone, but Athena had abandoned him when he needed her by his side the most. His feelings for her were strong, endurant, passionate; they could not be mistaken for anything other than the purest of all emotions: love.

But she did not seem to feel the same way...not in the least. He was confused, friendless and tired; he had not slept in well over a week; this could not go on. OWLS were fast approaching and without her, he couldn't find the time, patience, or concentration to prepare for them.

He knew, becase he felt it deep within his heart that she did love him; but lately he had been paying more heed to thoughts than emotions. He didnt know why; all Scorpius knew or that he thought he knew was completely meaningless without her.
*****
Back at the Ravenclaw common room Georgia and Athena's other friends tried desperately to change her mind, to make her realize that she was letting go of the greatest thing that had happened to her since being accepted into Hogwarts.

"Come on, don't you feel anything for him, don't you realize that he's the most desireable guy in the school. He's nuts for you and you act as though you don't even know that he's alive." Lucille, logical as always when it came to men, said.

"Yeah, Athena, I mean, don't you think this stupid *tantrum* of yours has gone on long enough? I hadn't told you, but I talked to him yesterday, and he didn't stop asking about you once."Amy, the terrible flirt and the one giggling the loudest when Scorpius had first approached her friend on the train, pleaded.

"You have got someone here who values you for your person, not your lineage, he was even so bold as to confront his own father so that he might have a chance to be with you. Here's someone who really loves you; if you love him--really love him...don't you think that he deserves to be given a second chance?" Georgia concluded.

Chapter 9 Forgiven

The more she thought about Georgia's words, Athena couldn't help but wonder if they were true; did she think that Scorpius deserved a second chance, and if so, would he take it if she gave it to him? How was it possible; if it even was, that he had really just meant to be honest with her without intent of ever hurting her feelings?

She felt confused, lost, and without much choice. What would Scorpius say to her if she did indeed offer him an apology, would he think that she was being hypocritical, a cynic, why was it that she found it so difficult to accept him now, when before nothing really seemed of the least importance to her?

All these questions were as a battle between her mind and heart; on one side she thought he was the one to blame, but in her heart she felt, or believed, that Georgia and her other friends had been right; he did love her, he really loved her; he had tried numerous times to justify himself, to ask of her, nothing more than a meager apology, but she had shunned him.

He had done so many things to prove to her that she was of the utmost significance to him; that he did not want to lose her. He had not slept, eaten, or done anything correctly or at all for the past weeks; he had even turned down the many girls that had eagerly and flirtatiously offered to take Athena's place.

To him nothing was the same without her it was as though there was an empty and endless hole in his heart; he knew that he was being childish, but love did not allow him to think properly.
*******
She meant alot to him...she was...then he remebered his father's letter; this same letter had been the main cause of all their troubles. Remembering that day still gave him an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach.

Suddenly he had a clear mental picture of the look she had given him on that same day, a look full of hate and scorn. Could it be that he loved her more than she loved him, if she loved him at all?

So, if this was true, then why was he still punishing himself? He had done nothing absolutely nothing wrong. He was surprised that she could hate him so much, so easily. He was completly confused and hurt.

His thoughts were soon interupted by the tall, slim figure of Athena. He looked up:

"What are you doing here; come to make me feel worse have you?"

"Scorpius, I'm...I have..."

"How did you know I'd be here?"

"I need to talk to you."

"Oh, now you want to talk, and all those times I tried to explain, when I knew I had done nothing wrong....that doesn't matter to you now, does it?"

"Scorpius, I know I hurt you, but I didn't come here to fight with you, I came to apologize, and I understand if you never want to see me again, but..."

"Stop crying, I can't think straight when you're crying, just let me think about it...I need to...be alone for a while."

She started walking away slowly, very slowly, deliberately...then he said...

"Athena...it's going to take more than one day to figure this out...but just so you know I will always forgive you, but can you forgive yourself?"

Chapter 10 Meeting at the Astronomy Tower

Could she forgive herself, this was something she did not know; what she did know, however, was how much Scorpius was devoted to her. She could not forgive herself for putting him through such shame, sadness, and torment.

It had been such a loss for him, but she had been much too absorbed in her own unfounded anger, that she had been led to make him suffer. Those days had gone by very painfully for him.

After much thought, she realized that she could never completely forgive herself for treating him the way that she had. Her thoughts soon led to other subjects like the approaching OWLS; she had to do something other than torment herself. She wrote a note and went to bed.

The following morning at breakfast, at the hour when the mail came, Scorpius received a note along with his usual letter from home.

Meet me at the astronomy tower, tonight
When everybody is sure to be asleep
I thought about what you said and we need to talk
--Athena

He read anxiously and throughout the entire day, he could not stop thinking about what she could possibly want to discuss with him, that late at night at the astronomy tower.

When the last class for the day was dismissed, he headed down toward the dungeon to do his work, but found that he could not focus; so he stopped and instead kept busy doing other things.

When the Slytherin common room was at last emptied, he made his way on cautious steps to the astronomy tower; it was a lot of walking, but what waited was worth it for him. He arrived tired and out of breath. He waited for her to arrive, but found that she was already there.

“I’m glad you could make it.”

“What did you keep me out of bed for? It better be important.”

“I’ll let you be the judge of that. I was hoping to talk about us, but after what happened, I’m not really sure that there is an ‘us’ to talk about.”

“What’s your point, why did it have to be so late and so far?”

“Oh, right. The reason I asked you to come up here is to tell you that I really am sorry; and I can never forgive myself for what I did. I’m sorry I took your feelings for granted, and I…”

“That doesn’t matter anymore, all I wanted was for you to realize how I felt about you and still do. You shouldn’t hold it against yourself; I understand now how my father’s words could have been misunderstood. I love you Athena, but the only way that this can work is if you feel the same way about me.”

“Of course I do, if I ever lead you to believe otherwise it was because I was stung, I don’t want us to fight anymore this ridiculous grudge has been held long enough.”

She was about to kiss him, but he stopped her---

“Athena, don’t do this, maybe we should take things slowly, really get to know each other before we…well before we…oh forget it. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

He walked away, but she made no move to stop him. She was not sure whether he would come back on his own, and when he didn’t…

She cried for most of the night before finally heading to Ravenclaw Tower to get what little sleep she could with her heart now completely shattered. Would he ever forgive her completely? She missed his warmth, his smile, and the tenderness he showed her before this conflict had ever even begun.

In his own bed, Scorpius too wondered if being with her would ever feel the same, his heart had been toyed with and he did not want to risk it becoming broken.

Chapter 11 No more Tears

She knew that he was hurting, knew that the pain she'd caused him would take time to heal. He was scarred, and all she had to show for it were tears, incessant tears cried for no apparent reason. As she sat thinking this over, an internal battle also raged within Scorpius, he too felt something was not quite right.

They were both confused, neither knew what to make of their feelings. Scorpius was torn between two thoughts, he did not know what his choice should be. Should he take her back--as was his desperate wish--and risk the pain of a broken heart or should he deny his feelings for her and let the old scars heal.

Of course he did not really remember what it was that he or she had done to the other. He did not know what had caused such a long and ongoing struggle. He struggled to forget her, she struggled to bring him back. What was it that was so difficult? What could it be that interfered with their happiness except pure selfish wishes on both of their parts?

Why should he be the one to apologize, but really thinking, why should she? Wasn't the suffering that they had put each other through more than enough already? It was precisely this thought that decided for him what his next action should be.

As he dragged himself up out of his saddened state--he had for far too long felt as though he were being used--Athena was busy struggling to keep the tears back. She did not want to cry anymore if the cause of the tears she tried so hard not to shed was gone. He would never take her back now. His actions had seemed to have been all the proof that she needed of how deeply she had injured him.

She fought with herself in that way; the minutes passed into hours with still not a sign of her tears giving up. A sound interupted her thoughts, it was the sound of someone trying to enter the Ravenclaw common room. The question was muffled, but she still heard it and the answer: the voice was a familiar one:

What is the beginning of every cycle?

"Circles have no beginning, just as they have no end. So in reality there is not a true or set beginning to any cycle, be it real or imaginary."
Scorpius answered the question and muttered under his breath Just as there was no beginning to this whole thing that I am now trying to end

Well said, enter.

The door swung open, and Athena was shocked to see him enter she was rendered speechless and now her tears began to flow in earnest, but they were not tears of sadness, desperation, or even anger, these were tears of sheer happiness.

"Hush now," he began "there is no more reason for you to shed another tear over me. I've come with my mind made up; just as I have no more anger or hurt, thus you should have no more tears to cry. Because now we are no longer apart, and we never should have been."

And that was when, driven as though reading each others thoughts, their lips met. It seemed as if the kiss would never end.

Finally she pulled away saying

"I missed you."

And he gave her a look that seemed to say

"I missed you too"

Ok. I know it has been a while, so first i ask that you forgive me. Anywho, hope this chapter makes up for the long wait:

Chapter 12 OWLS-Part 1

Now that OWLS were getting closer, Scorpius and Athena spent quite a bit of time together. Every day after class, they would meet in the Ravenclaw common room to study and talk.

Athena's friends did not seem to mind though, they rather enjoyed his presence. And if the heads of houses minded, they did not say anything about it.

Scorpius was more well-known around the Ravenclaw house than his own, Slytherin. All of Athena's friends said they wished they had found him before she did.

While Scorpius and Athena practiced hard and learned more so that they could pass their OWLS, all the girls in the Ravenclaw common room found it a difficult task to take their eyes off of him. He didn't seem to mind, because he and Athena were too busy to notice.

As the time passed, they had studied enough to know just about everything by heart. Now only a few days remained until their final exam was sceduled: Defence Against the Dark Arts, and they sat by the fire talking about what to expect.

"It sure has been a busy month for us, hasn't it?"

"Yeah. Scorpius, I think we deserve a break from all this studying, don't you?"

"I was thinking the same thing, but where can we go? There aren't very many places comfortable enough..." he was whispering now.

"What do you mean? And why are we whispering?"

"Oh, well you know, there aren't very many places where we can be alone together, we haven't had a moment to orselves in a long while."

"Hmmm." she pondered for a minute of two and then "How about you-know-where...tonight?"

"Sounds good, but...."

"What is it?"

"I'm a little tired right now and...." he pretended to be falling.

"Scorpius...maybe you should go lie down."

"Yea, I think I'll do that, see ya later," he gave her a light kiss and then waved goodbye to the dazed girls in the common room.

*****

It turned out that you-know-where was the Room of Requirement, to which they hadn't been in for several weeks. For this particular meeting the room adorned itself in a rather unusual way:

The room was draped with colorful banners, and soft carpeting lined the stone floor. There were plenty of places to sit, yet the only actual furniture was an overstuffed loveseat.

When they arrived, they were a little surprised at how simply the room's decor was, but neither had cause to complain. They sat, he on the loveseat, she on the ground at his feet, conversing about the events of the year, and of how quickly it seemed to have gone by.

"Can you believe we have only one test left?" he held her in a semi-hug.

"I know. The year sure has gone by pretty fast, hasn't it?" she answered.

not fast enough "Certainly, I can't wait to get on the train again."

"Yea, me either. We sure have been through a lot together haven't we? I mean, when you first approached me, I must say, I was a bit...shocked that someone like you....could notice someone like me someone so...beneath you."she sounded questioning.

"Don't say that, I'm not like that, and you know it." he began. "I should go, we have a test tommorow"

Chapter 12 OWLS-Part 2

She had said something wrong and she knew it. But she wasn't going to let her mistake hurt him:

"Scorpius, wait, please don't go. I'm sorry."

He was almost to the door when she said it. He stopped and turned back without moving toward her:

"I know," he said "I'm sorry too." he kept walking away, more slowly. She got up and went to him:

"Scorpius," he looked down "look at me!" He picked up his head, slowly; she met his gaze and saw that tears ran down his eyes.

"Scorpius," she repeated, "you have nothing to be sorry for. Absolutely nothing." She took his face in her hands, wiped away his tears, and kissed him.

38. What is the difference between an animagus and a werewolf?

He tried not to let his mind wander; he'd managed it easily enough before. All he had to do was not let himself think of Athena--her scent, her comforting touch, her smile; her soft, beautiful hair--wait, what was he doing? He pulled his hand back away from her hair.

He had to think about werewolves. Scorpius knew that he must focus; after all, Athena was completely absorbed in her work. He read the question again: the answer was simple enough--the difference between the two: animagi transformed through election, a werewolf had no choice--so then why wasn't he writing it. Two more questions left, not including this one, and only 15 minutes.

Scorpius remembered studying werewolves with her, she had been so...focused--he forced his head out of the clouds and wrote the answer. He finished the test only seconds before the parchment and the quill, disappeared, without a trace.

"Students are dismissed, please make your way--quietly," he glared at two loudly giggling Slytherin girls; "--to the Entrance Hall. You will be called in groups for the practical examination." instructed Professor Mortimer.

*****

Scorpius had been pleased to find that, for the written examination, he had been seated directly behind Athena. Now however, he was not as happy to find that they would be sorted by last name into different rooms. He watched forlornly as she followed Georgia and Lucille, and a lot of other people with L last names; while he was stuck with Amy, Athena's flirty friend who just so happened to have a crush on him--but then, she had a crush on almost all of Hogwarts.

He was glad when it was finally over; now he could...but Amy caught him before he could escape. Scorpius thought Amy was okay, she was smart and everything, but...

"I know your secret," she said slyly.

"Secret, what secret?" he asked distractedly

"About why you spend so much time in my common room."

"Huh?" he said, not really paying attention.

"You like me..."

"What?!?!" he was suddenly jerked into attention.

"...too bad you can't have me. I'm a free spirit, you understand don't you?" She gave him a peck on the cheek, "Don't worry I won't tell her." she laughed as she walked away coquettishly.

Scorpius swore, that Amy was the strangest Ravenclaw he'd ever met. He wiped off his cheek, and decided not to give it a second thought. Then he went off to find the girl he really loved, Athena.

Chapter 13 The Feast

When he found her, she was talking with her friends about how she thought that she'd done on the test.

"If she works as good as she looks, then I'm sure she did perfectly." he startled them.

"Oh, hey, Scorpius, what's up?" asked Gerogia.

"Not too much. Say, Georgia...would you mind letting me talk to Athena?"

"Oh, ummm, not at all. See you later guys." she left knowing full well that he had meant to ask for some time alone with her, but had been too polite to ask for it outright.

They were not looking at her when they said 'Bye'. They were now alone and he could kiss her without worrying about people staring too much.

"So, the year's gone by pretty fast hasn't it?"

"Yeah."

"Hey, I was just thinking. Maybe I do spend too much time in your common room, let's go to mine. Do you want to?" he asked her, but he wasn't expecting an answer.

"Well, I don't know, won't people stare at us?"

"I don't care about those people." he stated firmly, "I just care about you. And besides, no one will be there. But if it makes you uncomfortable, I'll go anywhere you take me."

"Anywhere?"

"....Yes...."

"Then........let's go to the feast!" she rushed off, "Come on, I'll race you."

"You're on!"

*****

When they got to the feast, he sat at her table instead of his own. None of the Slytherins really liked him all that much anymore, except maybe the girls.

Almost every Slytherin girl seemed to be protesting at the fact that he wasn't sitting at the right table; so much so, that Headmistress Mcgonagall had to ask him to sit with his house.

"I'm sorry Mr. Malfoy, but I'm afraid that if you don't they might cause a scandal."

Scorpius reluctantly made his way toward the Slytherin table.

Almost as soon as he got there, just about every girl at the table was upon him.

"Why are you dating a mud-blood?"

"Yea, she's not even good enough to be in Slytherin."

"I'm much more suited for you."

He tried to eat calmly he really did, but hearing Athena referred to as a mud-blood and unworthy was just too much.

"Shut Up, all of you, just Shut Up!" he burst. "Leave her alone, you will never be as great witches as she is! Never, do you understand?!?" in a fit of anger, he lost his appetite and ran out of the Great Hall leaving everyone in a state of stunned surprise. Including Athena who did not bother to hide her tears.

Chapter 14 Going Home

He felt a hand on his shoulder,

"What do you want?" he asked, standing up quickly.

"I just wanted to....thanks for that...just thanks." she answered, surprised by his reaction.

"There's nothing to be thankful for."

"Scorpius, I....are you okay?"

"I need to be alone for a minute." he shrugged off her sympathy. " I'd better go, I've got---packing to do." he muttered forcefully.

"What's really bothering you, Scorpius? Not that I don't already know, you don't have to worry about that I've told you."

"Please, Athena, I really have to be alone. Don't look at me like that. I can't be mad at you when you do that."

"Do what?" she kept looking at him. " I'm okay--why does it bother you anyway?"

"I don't know. I guess if the--if it doesn't bother you, then it shouldn't make any difference to me. But I just can't help it. I don't like the way they treat you."

"I know. Hey I have an idea; come on I'll help you pack. Come on let's go!"

At first he didn't know where they were going, but when he realized that they were heading toward the dugeons in the direction of the Slytherin common room, he stopped.

"Athena."

"Oh, come on, we're almost there."

"But--oh forget it." he stopped trying to make excuses.

"Well, go on open it."

He stated the password not wanting her to hear the word. As soon as they were inside, Scorpius led her to his dormitory, before more Slytherins started to fill the common room.

"So, why did you decide to come to a room full of people that treat you like that? I thought after that, you'd want to avoid this place."

"Look, I know that it doesn't make you overly joyful that I am here, but I thought that I had to make it up to you somehow. Besides I want to be here, I want to be where you are."

"Yes, but I didn't bring us here, you did. I just want to know why."

"I know. I know. Sorry. I just remembered what you had said about you spending so much time with my friends, I want to meet yours."

Scorpius was quiet.

Realizing what she had said she hurriedly appologized. "I didn't mean to upset you, I just...well it's just, I've been ignoring the taunts, the sneers for so long I thought, if I don't face them now, when?"

And then, as though in answer to her question, Tom, Scorpius's roommate came in:

"Oh, hey Malfoy, I didn't know you had her here, I'll leave you two alone." he sneered.

"Tom, you--" Scorpius meant to grab his wand but she stopped him.

"Scorpius, let me handle this." she whispered. And then, more loudly "Forgive me, I had forgotten that wizards of your stature, do not wish their purity to be dirtied by those such as myself. If you would like some privacy, I can leave. Stay!" she added to Scorpius.

Athena had not expected what came next, no one had.

"I'm a half-blood. I didn't know that we--that I had---I'm sorry." he choked on the apology.

"Now you listen here....what?" Scorpius could say nothing else after that.

"I'm...You're the first one to ever apologize in I don't know how many years." she was at a loss for other words, she tried to thank the now blushig Tom, but no sound came out.

"My mother's side, " he said, misinterpreting the silence "it's thanks to her, I'm here. She always said--well never mind." he stopped.

"So, what made you change your mind?" Scorpius recovered.

"I don't..."

"Thanks." Athena interrupted.

"I have packing to do." mumbled Tom.

Athena and Scorpius could not suppress their smiles when they noticed his trunk in a corner, already packed.
***
Dad,

We're coming home tommorow, it's been a considerably shorter year than I would have expected. I don't want you to think that I have been spending too much time with her. Just wait until you meet her.

I have manged to recover one of my Slytherin friends. But don't worry about me, I'll be fine; I don't think I need the others, they weren't really my friends after....I'll explain it to you later- face to face.

I'm sorry that I can't say more. I am sure that you understand.
I can't wait to see you and mother, I've missed you both.

Your Son,
Scorpius

***
On the train, Tom sat in their compartment with them, next to Amy.

"How come I never noticed you before?" she flirted.

"Amy, don't torture the boy, he seems to have enough on his mind." Georgia scolded her friend.

"I think he rather enjoys it." Scorpius teased.

"Oh, I'm glad the year's over, Scorpius, that means we won't have to put up with you until next year."

It seemed like all was just good fun until Amy said that.

"Scorpius," Athena spoke only to him.

"What's wrong?" he whispered, hugging more closely to him.

"Amy's right, I won't get to see you anymore now that..."

"You don't know that for sure, we'll work something out, you'll see."

"But..."

"Shhh. Just relax."
***
The train slowed to a halt. Scorpius gathered his and Athena's things into a trolley. After saying their goodbyes to their friends and promising everyone that they would keep in touch over the summer, Athena and Scorpius walked hand in hand, slowly, toward the platform.

"Just wait 'til he...they...meet you," he started.

"Scorpius, I don't think your father will care about me, once he meets my parents he'll know I'm a mu-" she stopped herself at the look on his face. "Well they'll know I'm not your level."

"Athena, don't kid yourself, you know I don't care about any of that, he'll understand. They both will. I'll make them understand, he and my mother both have to know how I feel about you. They have to accept that."

"Scorpius I'm not worth you losing the trust that your parents put in you. I don't want to be the object of a fight. I'm just not worth it."

"How can you say that--How does that even cross your mind? Athena I thought you knew--that you understood. I thought you'd be smarter than that. Why is it so hard for you to see? To see that I don't give a damn who your parents are or what house you're in, heck, I wouldn't even care if you weren't a witch. I can't believe that you would think you aren't worthy of my love for you."

She was silent for a long while before "Are you done, then, does this mean that--" she composed herself and tried again. "Scorpius you know I hate fighting with you. And I don't want you to fight with Draco Malfoy either, please, just let me go, it's for the best."

"What?!? Now you want me to--No!"

"I'm sorry."

"Athena don't, you can't go, this can't be goodbye."

"Can't it?"she was trying hard not to cry.

"It doesn't have to end this way. I don't want it to, I can't lose you."

She struggled against his hold, but you just can't stop two magnets from attracting. "Then it won't be goodbye." she emphasized her words by closing the distance between their lips.

Chapter 15 Growing Up

"Welcome home Scor--who's this?" Astoria Malfoy stopped mid-sentence to ask.

Draco made his way slowly toward his son and the girl that walked timidly by his side. He nodded to Scorpius, and gave his son a knowing and expectant look.

"Mom, dad, this is my," he cleared his throat, " this is Athena Lewis."

"Charmed, I'm sure." said Astoria.

Draco simply nodded, clearly expecting more from Scorpius.

"We're just going to--I'm going..." he couldn't find the right words.

"It was very nice meeting you, Mr. and Mrs. Malfoy; I'm going to go chat with my parents now--are you coming Scorpius."

Scorpius avoided looking at his father, "Sure, lead the way."

They were headed in the general direction of an enthusiasticly waving muggle couple.

"Welcome back!" the woman Scorpius assumed to be Mrs. Lewis smiled, hugging her daughter. "You must be Scorpius Malfoy, our daughter has told us so much about you."

"Has she?" he answered nervously. "Umm. Athena, do you mind if I go and--talk to my parents for a bit?"

"Go ahead." she said.
***
No sooner had he arrived than his father was on him. "What is the meaning of this? I thought, from your letter, that she'd at least be half-blood. I never assumed that she would be a--" he lowered his voice "muggle-born."

Scorpius could tell that his father was trying, unsuccesfully, to be calm.

"Of course not," he said "I wanted to avoid something like this. I knew that your reaction wouldn't be too good; the same as it always is to something that affects your 'status'."

"Scorpius, don't talk to your father that way. He's doing everything he can to avoid a scene. Come, we'll talk this over at home."

"No, mother, we won't." Scorpius replied, "We have to settle this here-now."

"Very well," said Draco, "why didn't you see fit to mention that your 'friend' was - muggleborn?"

"You said it yourself, father, don't you remember? Now how did you phrase it? Oh yeah, 'the fact that she is most likely not of the true blood' would be 'difficult to stomach'." he quoted his father's words, words that had caused a lot of trouble. "And didn't you also say that the Slytherin girls made your days at school a 'living hell'?"

"Scorpius don't start." he warned.

"Well, it's the truth isn't it?"

"That's beside the point." his father said doubtfully.

Astoria watched, somewhat helplessly as her husband and son argued.

"What if mom had been muggleborn, or even better, simply a muggle; would you still have married her?" Scorpius asked, playing the red card.

"Leave her out of it."

"Grow up, dad, do you really want to be Lucius?"
***
It took Draco a while before he answered that. "No," he said soflty, defeated. "I don't want to be my father.

"Dad, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that."

"It's not your fault son. I should not have let the old ways influence my opinions. Do you really feel strongly about this girl?" he asked his son, honestly curious.

"I love her dad; I really do."

"It's settled then; she will always be more than welcome at Malfoy Manor if she wishes to visit."

Scorpius almost ran to tell her the news; before he could say anything however, Athena ran up to him. "Scorpius, is everything okay, we heard raised voices."

"Everything is more than fine." he replied.

She kissed him; it was a kiss posed as a question, and his reply was her assurance that all was well.
