Full Version: The Animagus Question

I have wondered this for a very long time, and I am now going to ask whether or not it is possible for an Animagus to turn into a magical creature, like a dragon or a unicorn.

What do you think?
Nymphadora Lupin
Yeah, I think that would be possible. Animagi have the ability to turn into an animal, and though JKR never stated whether it would be possible to turn into a magical creature, we have to remember that these would be classed as animals, but this sort of depends which 'magical creeature' you're talking about.

For example, dementors are sometimes classed as magical creatures, but it's highly unlikely that a wizard would be able to turn into one of these. I also think the Ministry would probably have other laws regarding which creatures a wizard would be legally able to transform into - I doubt it would be legal for someone to turn into a Manticore or a basilisk, for example.

But in general, yes, I do think it's possible to turn into a magical creature!

Yes, I think it's possible. If someone had, say, a fiery personality, and a hot temper, then I think they could have the animagus of a dragon. And maybe a really shy, peaceful, nice, innocent person would have a unicorn. Who knows? JK likes to keep us guessing.

Yeah, I think so. In Fantastic Beasts and where to find them it explains that magical creatures are just creatures that are in hiding from the muggles (just like the wizards) so that muggles do not connect these beasts with magical properties back to wizards. If they're just animals with links to wizards, how could it be impossible to become a pixie or a unicorn animagus?
I don't seem to remember Dementors being in that book,Nymphadora Lupin, (although it is a while since I've read it) so maybe they belong to the Has-beens or Beings divisions. I agree with your other point too, and I'm wondering (actually this has practicually nothing to do with your other point, but I'll stick this here anyway tongue.gif ) whether it is possible to transform into something that isn't really a 'creature', like a merperson or something. Is this possible?

This is something I also wonder about, I actually posted that I wanted to know this in a thread about having multiple forms and just a few days later I see this thread.

I think it is possible for one to assume the form of a magical creature however I think it is very rare. I think you probably have to have a large degree of raw magical ability when you undertake the transformation.

I don't think James, Sirius, or Wormtail could have managed it because they hadn't reached full magical potential yet, and they hadn't fully developed their magic and Wormtail probably never could manage it. I think someone like McGonagall could though, I would assume she would wait at least until she was of age to start working on the transformation and she is a very good witch, but a cat was just better suited for her. Perhaps Sirius and James could manage a transformation when they were older and great wizards.

I am sure that you could become a magical creature. Im sure it is a lot more advanced though. Assuming that people actually would want to become one of these creatures, i am sure that it is quite possible to become one of these. Seeing that JKR never puts that you couldnt in the book makes me assume that you could. But thats just my opinion

One probably could transform into a magical creature, though I doubt the ministry would encourage it. They probably even have restrictions on it. For example, having one of Voldemort's supporters turn into a wolf or tiger would be bad enough, imagine if they could turn into a dragon.

But it probably would be very possible, though I imagine it would require more skill and training than turning into a mouse would. biggrin.gif

I bet you could probably turn into a magical creature (i.e. a unicorn, dragon, etc.) But I wonder if you could really turn yourself into a half-human or human-like magical creature. Since that species (like a merperson or a centaur) is also part human, would it really be possible to transform yourself into that species? I mean, magical creatures in general just seem like it would be harder to do, since they are magical, but still possible. But if it's a humanoid species, I don't know if that would actually be possible. unsure.gif

An Animagus could probably turn into a magical creature. They can turn into any animal and it's never been said that they couldn't turn into a magical creature. I guess they could turn into a hyppogriff if they wanted to, but I wouldn't. happy.gif The Ministry probably has laws as to the limits of what the wizard can turn into.

I suppose that perhaps, as Transfigurating into an Animagus is difficult and dangerous enough, doing it into a magical creature would be the double risky and hard, because these being has their own powers. But yes, I've always wondered that, as well as what happens with Patronuses... Why all the Patronuses forms we've found are normal animals and not a dragon or a .... kelpie?

I think that you couldn't because humanoids aren't animals or just beings, they're actually communities, thinking beings, and so ... you can't just turn into them!

I definatly think you could turn yourself into a creature like a dragon. But it think it has to be an animal that aren't as smart as a human being. Centaurs and merpeople can probably be viewed in that way, but then again I don't think you can turn yourself into a giant! That would at least take a lot of magical powers and strenght. It is probably easier to turn yourself into something small like a cat, dog or a rat instead of something big like a dragon. But maybe you can turn yourself into a blast-ended-skrewt tongue.gif
