I was just thinking in my own little world, and one thing came to me. What exactly is a Marauder? Well according to ye old dictionary.com it is 'someone who attacks in search of booty' and to maraud is to 'rove and raid in search of plunder'. This bugged me. Ms Rowling is always precise with details, yet it wasn't explained why the map was named the Marauder's. I mean, did the four of them actually go around stealing items around Hogwarts? I thought to believe that the map was used to get past teachers and staff, and get to the local sweet shop etc.

Anyone fancy giving me a slap or proving me otherwise?

**slap** tongue.gif Sorry, but you asked for it.... biggrin.gif

Erm....well, from what I remember, a marauder was another name for a pirate really....someone who pillages and **hem hem** you know...that other thing that's not suitable for discussion on a family board that James and co wouldn't have done anyway..... tongue.gif

Just someone who robs and drinks a lot.....generally a bit of a rogue really....but in a nice way, you know? A bit like Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, I guess....

I think that's what James and co called themselves because James and Sirius especially fancied themselves as a couple of lovable rogues really from the sound of it....I guess it was pretty fitting really. Seeing as how they made the map, I'm pretty sure they came up with the name themselves though.

They broke a couple of school rules, but I can't see them ever stretching to breaking the law....I can't see Fred and George turning over Honeydukes somehow.... tongue.gif I doubt whether James and co would have done that either - I think they knew where to draw the line.....most of the time.

Rather nasty incidents with Snape notwithstanding... dry.gif
