The most famous legend in the south west of England is that of King Arthur and the Knights of the round table. I don't think I need to elaborate too much but it is thought that Arthur was quite possiibly a roman soldier. A more romantic version tells of the boy who pulled the sword Excalibur from the stone and became the King of England. He married Guinevere who betrayed him with his favourite Knight Lancelot. He unwittingly fathered a child with his half sister, Morgan le Fay.

British legends include that of dragons and giants, Faeries, Brownies and Piskies. In Scotland the most famous legend is that of Loch Ness, and the monster that lives in it's depths. Other Scottish legends are of Selkie, Kelpies and Red Caps(Powries). We also have Boggarts..yes really Boggarts!

One of the spookiest legends is that of the devils footprints. These mysterious hoof shaped prints appeared overnight in heavy snowfall in Southern Devon in 1855 have never been explained. They were reported to have streched over roof tops for hundred of miles. They were said to have gone through solid walls and haystacks, emerging the other side as if there had been no barrier at all.

The British Isles are truly a strange place to be!

I live in Canada, and have heard some folktales. The one that sticks out in my mind is this one. It's not famous, just from a book I read when I was 6 (I'm 15 now).

It is said that many moons ago, a boy was tending to his livestock when he noticed that many of them looked sick. It had not rained for quite some time. Clouds would pass but still no rain came. So, the boy decided to pierce the clouds with an arrow. It worked and the rains came.

Another one I've heard is that there is a sea monster living in Lake Ontario. This lake is in the southernmost part of Canada. I'm actually typing this a mere 400 yards from this lake. Anyways, this monster supposedly looks like the Loch Ness monster, with fangs and bright red eyes.

We have many myths, most of them coming from ancient Greeks, who had made many tales about their Gods. For example, there is a myth about a woman named Europe who had been abducted by Zeus. Or a myth about a man named Narcissus, (yes the male name of Narcissa) who liked his looks so much that one day he fell in the lake he used to sit for hours and watch his reflection and drowned. And then, Gods fell sorry for him and made him a flower. Or there is a myth about a Greek queen name Alkisti (I was named after her) who died instead of her husband etc etc. We have a great variety of myths.

Other more modern folks are about real people. For example there is a tale about a woman who had met all the months of the year. There are so many I can't recall all of them. But our culture is very rich when it comes to tales. smile.gif

u know we in India believe that a ghost/spirit dwells on peepal trees............the story is......
Once a poor peasant & his wife lived in a lonely forest. One day an injured beggar visited them. The 2 inspite of their poverty came to his aid and did their best to make him comfortable. Pleased by their hospitality he granted them a boon-a spirit for whom their word would be law,but the condition was that as soon as the ghost was left without work,he would kill the couple.

For years, the couple lived in luxury-their crops flourished, they had dams built, renovated their house....but one fyn day they ran out of work for the spirit. The man consulted his wife. The wife, who had curly hair, cut off a lock and ordered the spirit to straighten it................it is believed that even today the spirit sits on the peepal tree attempting to straighten it..........
