Quite a while ago I sent a fan mail letter to JKR not expecting a response with the obvious amount she'll have to go through, and so far I've been right to think so

Just wondered if any of you guys and gals have sent JRK (or indeed any of the movie cast members) fan mail of any sorts, and if so, did you get a reply? If you did, was it a hand-written response or some printed out, pre-formatted thing?
If not, how long have you been waiting? 5 months for me so far.

I am pretty sure that Rowling has a staff that takes care of fan letters. I doubt she reads her fan mail, partly because she has a very busy schedule.
Had she received a fan letter shortly after her first book was published, before she became a household name, she might have answered the letter herself. I doubt seriously that she does now.
I also think that the staff would bring to her attention some fan mail. Letters like from Make-a-Wish foundation, well known celebrities, etc. Then she would probably respond personally.

Yes, the letters are read by her staff, and only some lucky people get to have their letter sent off to her, in person. One of my friends, who is another crazy fan of J.K rowling, has written to her and it was answered within about two weeks by one of her staff, named Sarah...

No, I've never sent her fan-mail, mainly because I know that she won't read it personally. But of cause, if she would read all her fan-mail, she wouldn't be able to do anything ells. And she is really busy, so... So clearly the staff takes care of that. But if you write to less celeb people, they answer personally, I have recieved answers, that weren't standard, specific questions of mine were answered. So it is possible, just not with the big celebrities.

I sent her a letter years ago along with a short story I had written and I got a nasty letter back from someone at her office place. They said she was too busy to read what I had written and she couldn't answer my letter and all that stuff, but they were really blunt about it. I was only nine at the time and it made me all sad. I'm not sad about it now, but when I think back on it I still get a little annoyed.

Oh, that must have been horrible for you, Chels. I'd burst in tears, in your shoes.
I think it's obvious she doesn't reply the fan mail herself, but her staff do it. Maybe the person who wrote that to you wasn't in her/his good mods that day, because we know that she's busy, but the person should have been a bit more pleasant, knowing that it was a kid writing.
I've never written to a celebrity, first of all 'cause I always think of what will my parents say when they see me sending a letter of that kind (they would not even believe I'll get an answer, standard or not), and second because I never know what to write in. I mean, should I flatter them, should I say anything about their work, their fashion style, whaat? Because I don't want a standard reply, I want to write such an interesting letter that the have to read it themselves.
But then I think, "what the h***, just write some rubbishness and get your autographed photo!!"
But I simply can't.

Um, I highly doubt she has time to read all that fan mail. If anyone does get an answer, I'm sure its not personally from her. However, maybe if there was some type of spectacular fan mail she might look at it.

Yeah, it's sort of frustrating that it's almost impossible to send JKR mail and acually get a reply. I bet a person of high profile could. Unfortunately I am not a person of high profile. When I Google myself, a few hits are about me, but the rest are about a deceased opera singer who shares my last name. (We're not related, though.) If I ever become a person of high profile, I promise to respond to all my fan mail, even if it's just a form letter with my signature. But I guess I can understand how JKR would feel so overwhelmed by all those letters. The last mail I received was birthday cards, which I still need to write thank-you notes for.

I sent a card to Dan Radcliffe once. i got a reply a month or two later. The reply contained a signed photo and a sheet of most asked questions with answers.
One of my friends sent JK Rolwing a letter, handwritten I think, and she received a reply quite a few months later. she showed it to me, there was a pre-typed letter with my friend's name and a FAQ sheet as with Dan.

I've written letters, but never actually sent them. I'm afraid that they'll like send me hate mail back or something. I know, I'm odd, but it's possible it could happen. Where exactly can we find the right address to send fan mail to JKR? I know there's a place somewhere on this sight for something like that, but can someone give me the address or direct me where. And how much would it cost? I'm in the US, so I'm sure I'll have to pay extra.

The address for fanmail can, surprisingly, be found inside any copy of the books. It is the publisher's address.

I doubt JKR actually has time to read and reply to fan mail, as she probably has a very busy schedule

I once wrote to her (in handwriting) when I was nine. I got a reply from one of her assistants, about a month or so later saying that JKR was too busy to read the letter... I was so upset

I never sent her fanmail, because I know if I did, I'd get my hopes up that she'd respond...and I know she probably wouldn't.
I'm sure the woman gets about 1000 fanmails a day!!
Her staff replies for you? Well, at least it's better than no response. :\

I have never sent her fan mail and I'm pretty sure I never will. It's pointless because she's not going to respond. She might have staff do it but to me that's not the reason why I would me writing to J. K. Rowling. If I take the time to write her a letter I don't want to hear from someone else. Especially when they tell you that Rowling is to busy to answer fan mail. Well DUH! I wouldn't want a rude letter back like Chelsea.
harryjpotter, that's awesome that you got a signed photo of Dan. At least you got something for thinking of him and sending him a card.
Ciao,
