Apple in the Woods
Apple in the Woods
“Ron, Hermione! Over here!” called Harry Potter to his two best friends. “Look at this,” he said as he pointed to a solitary apple, lying with apparent innocence amidst the fallen leaves and twigs in the forbidden forest.
Ron bent to pick up the fruit, but was halted as Hermione’s fingers encircled his wrist.
“Ron! Are you crazy? Something is not right here. Don’t you see anything peculiar about this?” Hermione asked with obvious annoyance at her boyfriend’s idiocy.
Ron looked around and shook his head. “Come on, Hermione. There is no way that that old geezer, Malfoy, turned an apple into a portkey. Now I’ll admit that was pretty foolish of me to pick up that bone.”
Hermione was hysterical, “Pretty foolish?! Ron, you transported us to the stone age! And what’s more, Dumbledore instructed us not to touch anything but the cane. Then when you picked up the mouse ear hat and we ended up in an animation. Come on, Ron, how thick can you get?”
Ron scratched his temple in thought and chuckled quietly, “That was by far the strangest thing I’ve ever seen. That mouse was something else. And what about that tall, gangly, goofy looking thing? What was it?”
“That was Goofy, he’s a dog, I think,” answered Hermione, distracted for the moment.
“I know, that’s what I said, goofy. What was his name again?” Ron asked, sincerely trying to remember.
“Goofy! And don’t change the subject. You can not touch anything else. Including the apple.”
"It’s an apple, Hermione! And I’m hungry.”
“RON! NO!” shouted Harry and Hermione together as Ron once again bent to retrieve the ruby-colored fruit. They each grabbed a handful of knitted maroon sweater seconds before the wearer’s fingers wrapped around the apple.
* * *
“Three. Two. One,” said a musical voice.
Harry, Ron and Hermione landed in a heap in the middle of a spacious living room.
Hermione promptly scrambled to her feet and slapped Ron’s shoulders and chest, repeatedly. “I told you. I TOLD you, Ronald Weasley! You NEVER listen to me!”
Ron shrugged, not caring where they were and took a bite of the Red Delicious apple.
Hermione’s attention was pulled toward Harry, who was tugging at her sleeve. “What!” she cried, louder than she’d intended.
Harry pointed in front of them with his mouth agape.
Hermione looked in the direction her best friend indicated and froze, as did Ron.
Staring at the three of them, were seven of the most beautiful people they had ever laid eyes on.
A pixie-like girl with short, spiky black hair danced forward with a grace that Harry and his friends had never seen, and stopped two feet in front of them.
“Hi, I’m Alice, and of course, we’d be happy to help.”
“Wizards, huh? Well, now I’ve seen everything. In all the years of my existence, I never thought I’d actually live to see real live wizards,” an inhumanly beautiful young man said, “And witch,” he corrected as he indicated in Hermione’s direction as if he had read her mind.
“Edward,” Alice said as she rolled her eyes. “We live in a world filled with vampires and werewolves, and you’re surprised there are witches and wizards?”
Another man stepped forward, apparently the leader of this ethereal group of people. “Allow me to introduce us. My name is Carlisle Cullen.” He then indicated a lovely woman to the right of him. “And this is my wife, Esme.” Then each in turn, he introduced the rest of them. “These are my children, Jasper, Emmett, Rosalie, Edward, and of course, Alice.”
Harry, Ron and Hermione studied each of them carefully. Their eyes wide with fear and wonder. Harry and Ron’s eyes fell upon Rosalie, even among this group of breathtakingly exquisite people, she stood out. Never in their wildest dreams had they seen someone like her. Her flaxen hair seemed to glow, her strange golden eyes (the same color of the rest of this family) sparkled, but she somehow seemed sinister, unlike the friendly demeanor the rest of them were exuding.
Hermione glowered at Ron when she followed his gaze and saw where it rested. She shoved him, huffed and turned her back to him as she stuck her nose in the air and folded her arms tightly across her chest. “Pig!” she exclaimed under her breath.
The one called Emmett laughed heartily and playfully elbowed Edward in the ribs, “Looks like this one could give Bella competition in the attitude department, eh, little brother.”
“Speaking of Bella,” chimed Alice, “She’s pulling up the drive as we speak.”
And in a blur, Edward was gone.
Ron pointed to the spot that used to hold Edward, and spluttered, “Wha...? How? But he...just.”
“He must have Disapparated, Ron,” provided Harry.
“Dissa what?” asked Alice, as she cocked her head to the side.
“Erm... I guess not. How did he disappear like that?” Harry asked in wonder.
Before Alice could answer, Edward was standing amidst the rest of the group. A girl, plain in comparison to the rest of the group, was perched, piggy back style upon his back. He set her down with infinite gentleness, and Hermione could not help but be envious of this newcomer. If only Ron would treat her like this beautiful man treated his girlfriend.
Hermione watched as Edward looked suddenly to Ron then back to Hermione and gave her a heart-stopping smile. She ducked her head as her cheeks flushed furiously.
"Ouch!" cried Ron, as he took another bite of the apple. "Ah bih muh tahng!" He turned to Hermione with his tongue hanging out of his mouth. "Is ih bweeding?"
Sure enough, a small scarlet spot was beginning to appear.
Several things happened at once, Jasper crouched, looking much like a cougar just before it attacks its prey. Edward and Alice disappeared in a blur only to appear less than a second later holding Jasper back, and the three outsiders pulled their wands at the sudden change in atmosphere and pointed them toward the suddenly ferocious looking man.
Emmett only laughed again, “Check it out, Rose, they think they’d be able to fight us off with sticks.”
Rosalie smirked, but said nothing.
Carlisle stepped in front of Harry, Ron and Hermione and said in a kind tone. “I think that it would be a good idea if we stepped outside for a moment.”
“You think?” shrieked Hermione as she practically ran for the front door.
Bella followed them. She loved Jasper, but she knew exactly what it was like to be in the sights of a thirsty vampire.
Once in the open air, Carlisle stepped toward the golden trio, arms outstretched, palms outward in a sign of surrender.
The three took an involuntary step backwards and once again raised their wands.
Bella stepped in front of her soon-to-be-father-in-law. “He won’t hurt you.”
They regarded the girl carefully. She wasn’t nearly as intimidating as the rest of them were. Her wide expressive brown eyes were impossible to not trust. Slowly all three lowered their wands.
“What are you?” asked Harry.
“We’re not at liberty to say,” answered the kind, beautiful man.
Hermione was nearly hysterical. “Your son, Jasper, acted as if Ron would make a fine supper. Edward and Alice can move faster than it’s possible for anyone to move. Emmett thought it was funny that my boyfriend was almost eaten, and you think we shouldn’t know what you are?” She looked around and shook her head. “Where are we, anyway?” she asked.
“Forks,” answered the brown eyed girl as she stuck out her hand. “I’m Bella.”
Bella shook hands with Harry, Ron and Hermione and stepped back.
“Forks?” Ron asked, bewildered. “As in the eating utensil?”
Bella laughed. “Yep. Forks, Washington.”
“We’re in the United States?” asked Hermione.
“Right, again,” answered Bella.
“Where your Muggle president lives?” Ron asked, to which he receive an elbow to the ribs and an eye roll from Hermione.
“Not Washington D.C., you moron! Washington state,” supplied Hermione.
“Excuse me, Muggle?” asked Bella.
“Yes, Muggle,” answered Hermione. “It’s just a nickname for non-magical folk.”
Alice, Emmett, Rosalie, Esme and Edward were suddenly at their side. Jasper was also outside, but standing several yards away.
Harry, Ron and Hermione eyed him warily, but as a strange calm fell over them, they let their guard down.
Harry stepped forward and stuck his hand out to Carlisle. “We haven’t officially introduced ourselves. I’m Ha. . .”
“Harry, Ron and Hermione,” chirped Alice as she took the proffered limb before Carlisle could.
Edward growled, Alice turned back to him momentarily, “Oh, shove off, Edward. They’re going to find out anyway, besides, didn’t I say they were from a different dimension? The Volturi will never even find out.” She turned back to their visitors. “We’re vampires.”
A collective gasp came from the three Hogwarts graduates.
“You don’t look like any vampire we’ve seen before,” said Harry, not believing this new bit of information.
Edward chuckled, “Yeah, they’ve seen vampires. But they’re more like the legends. You know, the sharp fangs, tiny pinprick bite marks. I had no idea that those kind existed. Interesting. Your world is very complex. This mission you were sent on, you know, the cane? What exactly will it do if you don’t destroy it?”
“H-how... did...” Harry stuttered.
“He can read minds,” supplied Bella.
Hermione once again blushed deeply as she realized what the smile Edward had given her earlier had meant. He had heard every little detail of her wishing that she was with Edward instead of Ron.
Edward leaned in close to whisper in her ear, “Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me.”
Thirty minutes later, they all sat at ease in the large living room.
Emmett spoke up, excitement in his eyes at the prospect of fighting villains from another world. “So, this Malfoy guy is trying to resurrect his master? With a cane?”
“That’s what Dumbledore’s portrait said,” said Harry, scratching his chin in thought.
“Talking portraits... I still find that difficult to believe,” said Bella
“We’ll show you, once we get back to Hogwarts,” promised Ron.
“And how again, are we going to get there?” asked Emmett.
“Ron, give me your shoe,” demanded Hermione, then to answer Emmett’s question, she said, “I’m going to create a portkey. I’m getting rather good at it, seeing as how I’ve had to create several in the last forty eight hours, because Ron can’t follow instructions!” she said snappishly.
* * *
Minerva McGonagall sat in her office. She jumped nearly a foot in the air when eleven people suddenly appeared in her office clutching an old, worn out, smelly sneaker.
“What in Merlin’s name is going on here?” asked the Headmistress of Hogwarts.
From behind her, Dumbledore’s portrait laughed genially, “Why Harry, how ingenious of you. I never would have thought to recruit help from another dimension. Lucius won’t know how to handle these people.” He winked at Carlisle.
“Albus,” said Severus Snape as he appeared in his own portrait. “I have word that Lucius is going to be in the forest tonight to check on his...” He stopped as he eyed the newcomers suspiciously.
“They’re friends. They’re here to help,” Harry supplied.
Snape raised an eyebrow as he studied each of the strangers, his eyes stopped on Alice, and Harry could tell that he was wondering how this tiny wisp of a girl could help. “Very well.” He looked back to Dumbledore’s portrait and continued, “Lucius Malfoy will be returning to the Forbidden Forest tonight at midnight to move the cane. He fears that Potter is getting to close to it. It seems he is aware that three of his portkeys were triggered within the last forty eight hours.” The obsidian eyes rested briefly on Harry then Hermione, then to Ron where they stayed.
Ron blushed and looked away, shuffling his feet at his own stupidity.
“Mr. Weasley. I seem to remember Professor Dumbledore instructing the three of you to touch nothing but the cane. Did you seem to think that maybe he told you that for the mere power it brings to order people around? Or perhaps you had reason not to believe him. Whatever the case, you have alerted Lucius to the fact that you are on to him,” informed Snape.
“We’ll get him, Professor. There’s no way he’s going to get past us,” stated Hermione, confident in their little army.
They headed down the spiral staircase and through the crowded Hogwarts castle. Students stared and gaped at the beautiful people passing them. The beautiful people passing the students stared at the ghosts, moving staircases and portraits and floating candles with apparent disinterest. But Harry and his best friends knew better.
Once on the grounds, they finally had the opportunity to formulate a plan without an unwanted audience.
Edward, worried about Bella, asked Harry for the millionth time. “You’re absolutely positive Bella will go undetected?”
“Absolutely positive. I’ve used this cloak loads of times. I’ve never been caught. And Bella will be in absolutely no danger as long as she leaves it on. Look,” said Harry, as he draped the cloak over Bella’s small frame.
“Amazing! Even her scent is hidden,” Edward stated, completely intrigued with this blanket. “Alright. I guess as long as Bella stays under this, and out of the way, she can come.”
Bella threw the invisibility cloak off and walked into Edward’s open arms. "Good! Now I won't have to sneak after you," she said, only partly teasing.
Edward issued a low warning growl in her ear, "Don't even joke about things like that! As I've told you before, you are far too precious to me to take chances with."
“We are so winning this thing!” exclaimed Alice happily. “Now, the cane should be right through here.”
* * *
By eleven thirty their plans were laid and they were all in place just waiting for Lucius Malfoy to show up.
Rosalie and Alice were hiding behind a tree. Alice’s lips moved infinitesimally and Rosalie nodded and stepped into the small forest clearing.
She began singing softly, her clear soprano voice rang through the branches. It would be impossible for any human male in the vicinity to not be enthralled by the beautiful music. But the music was nothing compared to the creature it was coming from. She was wearing a pale, sage green gown of a simple cut that clung to her curves in all the right places.
Lucius stepped into view. He stopped in his tracks as his eyes met the view before him.
Rosalie smiled. “Excuse me, but I seem to have lost my way. Would you mind terribly, pointing me in the direction out of this forest?” she asked.
He studied the breathtakingly beautiful woman before saying, “I’d be honored to be of service, Miss. . .”
“Hale. Rosalie Hale,” she said as she batted her eyelashes.
Lucius, remembering his manners, offered his hand.
Rosalie put her slender, feminine hand into his. He lifted it to his mouth and placed a genteel kiss upon it.
“My dear,” he said, cupping her hand with his. “You are absolutely, freezing. If you’ll just wait here, I dropped my cane around here somewhere. Ah, here it is.”
He picked it up and walked back to Rosalie. “Now, dear, let’s get you out of the cold. We can have tea at my home. I’d love for you to meet my son.”
From behind their tree, Harry, Ron and Hermione tried unsuccessfully to hide their laughter. Just picturing the pointy faced ferret, Draco Malfoy with Rosalie. . .
Deciding it was time to act, one by one the hidden helpers stepped into view.
First was Alice and Esme. “Rose, there you are! We’ve been looking everywhere for you.”
“Well, well,” said Lucius, understanding dawning on him. “What in the world are three beautiful young women doing out in the middle of the forbidden forest at midnight?” He pointed his wand at the three women.
Emmett stepped into the clearing.
Fear crossed Lucius’ features briefly as his eyes measured this man’s size. Instead of pointing the wand at the newcomer, he gave it a little flick. Within seconds, six masked beings appeared.
Emmett threw his head back and laughed. These numbers would be much more fun than one!
“You find your impending doom amusing?” asked Lucius. “Hmm. . . But if you tell me where Potter is, I may let you live.”
Edward stepped out.
Fear once again clouded Lucius' face, but he quickly regained composure and said, “This is quite interesting, but not really unexpected. You see, Potter always hides behind the cloaks of those more powerful than himself.” He turned in a circle. “Come now, Harry. No more need to hide. Face me like a man.”
Jasper stepped out and immediately, the atmosphere was calm.
“Well, well, what have we here? I’ll tell you what,” bargained Lucius. “Why not just skip the dramatics? Exactly how many of you is Harry hiding behind?”
Carlisle, Harry, Ron and Hermione all stepped out.
Harry smiled confidently and said in his best Lucius imitation, “Come now, Lucius. Why not just give me the cane now and skip all the fighting.”
Lucius smirked and pointed his wand at Harry. “Avada. . .”
Lucius looked at his empty wand hand then around to the gathered, other world beings. The small female had it, twiddling it between her fingers.
“Wandless, Malfoy? Gee, now how did that happen?” taunted Harry.
Lucius’ eyes narrowed menacingly as he growled, “What magic are you playing at, Potter?!”
“Magic? No magic. My friends here are, by all sense of the word, Muggles. I must thank you though, for placing that apple in the woods. Without that portkey, I would never have met my new friends, and this wouldn’t have been nearly as entertaining.” Harry snorted, “The best bit of amusement was when you intended Rosalie for your slimy git of a son.”
Lucius raised his arm, then lowered it as if signaling a firing squad. At once, a half a dozen spells lit the forest.
The Cullens were too fast be touched, but the spells kept them too busy to acquire the cane.
Bella, still underneath the invisibility cloak, snuck behind Lucius, who was cowering behind his colleagues, and grabbed the cane from his distracted grip. With all her might, she swung it at his head.
With a resounding thud, the cane met Lucius just under his right ear. He grasped angrily for the cane that now seemed to be floating away.
With all her might she threw it over the heads of the masked men.
Alice, seeing where she needed to be, caught it agilely and tossed it to Harry.
At the distraction, Edward flew across the line of Death Eaters, snapping each of their wands in turn, then stopped in the exact spot he started from, as if he never even moved.
Their bewildered expressions turned to fear as they each realized they had been disarmed. Never had they seen anything like this. There was no way these people were mere Muggles. They were standing in a circle around them making escape impossible, what with every time one of them tried to break free, an iron hard arm shot out.
There was a loud pop and Kingsley Shaklebolt appeared in front of them.
“You’re right on time, Minister,” Harry said as he handed the cane to Kingsley.
“Thank you, Harry. Once again, you have saved the entire wizarding world.”
“I couldn’t have done it without my new friends here. And you should be thanking Bella for getting the cane.”
Bella slipped the cloak off of her head and stepped forward as Kingsley motioned to her. “We will forever be in your debt. This cane holds a secret to resurrecting You-know-who.”
One by one, the Cullens stepped forward as Ministry officials magically bound and arrested the circle of Death Eaters.
“On behalf of our wizarding community, we thank you. You all will be welcome here whenever you’d like. Feel free to visit. Now, I believe this will transport you home.”
Harry, Ron and Hermione said goodbye to each of the Cullens and Bella, and stood back as their new friends each put a finger on the dead branch. In a flash of blue, they were gone.
Life would once again return to some sense of normalcy for the golden trio. But for how long, no one could be sure.
