Harry the Gryffindor
“Harry? Harry!” Hermione called.
“Sorry,” apologized Harry.
It was a warm summer day and he was sitting in the Three Broomsticks with his two best friends, Ron and Hermione. He looked down at the note still in his hand.
Harry,
I need to ask a favor of you. Lucius Malfoy has been acting suspiciously lately. I think he's up to something. I'd like you to follow him and see if you can find out what he's up to. Thanks.
-Kingsley
He had only gotten the note a few hours ago and immediately asked Ron and Hermione to meet with him at the Three Broomsticks to discuss what to do. He had explained the situation to them and they were more than eager to help.
“I’m just trying to figure this all out in my head,” Harry sighed, taking a sip of his butterbeer.
“Harry, what is there to figure out? We just have to trail Lucius Malfoy. How hard can that be?” Hermione said, exasperated.
“You make it sound as though it’s going to be easy, Hermione,” Harry said.
“Yeah, and we don’t even know where he is,” Ron pointed out. The group fell into silence, eyes upon the table.
Hermione bit her lip. Suddenly she opened her eyes wide. “I do!” she squeaked excitedly.
“Get a grip,” Ron scoffed rolling his eyes.
“No, I’m serious! Look!” She cried, pointing out the window of the pub. Harry and Ron spun around. Sure enough, Lucius Malfoy was walking through Hogsmeade.
Harry jumped up. “Come on! We’ve got to follow him!”
“Duh,” was all Ron said.
The trio raced out of the Three Broomsticks and onto the street.
“Which way did he go?” Hermione asked, looking around.
“He was going that way!” Ron exclaimed as he pointed in the direction Lucius had gone.
They ran down the street. Up ahead, they saw Lucius turn down another street. They reached the corner just in time to see him enter the Hog’s Head.
Harry, Ron and Hermione looked at each other and began walking up to the pub careful to stay away from any windows.
“Let’s move around back,” Harry said. There were less windows on that side.
They crept around the building, keeping low. When they were on the other side Harry said, “Stay low. I’m going to look in and see if I can spot him.”
“Don’t let him see you,” Hermione cautioned.
“Right,” said Harry. Slowly, he peeked over the windowsill.
“Do you see him?” Hermione asked.
“Shh!” Ron whispered.
“Harry sunk back down. “He’s sitting two tables away from the window. He’s with Goyle. They’re deep in conversation. I wish I could hear what they were saying. It seems important.”
“Dang,” Ron muttered.
Hermione smirked. “I know a way.”
“How?” Ron demanded.
Hermione reached into her robes and pulled out a long piece of flesh colored string. Ron’s eyes bulged. “What...You.. .How…When...?”
“There’s no need to stutter, Ron.” Hermione said.
“But how did you get extendable ears?”
Hermione blushed.
“You bought them from Fred and George? I thought you hated their stuff!”
“I never said I hated all of it. Some of their stuff really is good magic,” admitted Hermione.
“But-” Started Ron.
“We’re wasting time,” Harry cut in.
“Okay,” said Ron. “We have to open the window a crack so we can hear.”
“Got it,” said Hermione and muttered a spell. The window opened a crack, just wide enough so the extendable ear could fit through.
“You’re good, Hermione,” Ron complimented.
Hermione blushed again.
Harry held the ear so that they could hear together. They heard bits of the conversation, then Lucius’ smooth voice sounded.
“It’s ready.”
“Where are you going to keep it? The, well, I’ll call it the ‘secret’,” said Goyle.
“In my cane, and that will be in the Forbidden Forest. I’m putting it there tonight.”
Harry, Ron and Hermione looked at each other with puzzled expressions.
“What does he-” Hermione whispered.
“Shhh!” Ron and Harry whispered back.
“And you’re sure it will work?” Goyle asked.
Lucius slammed his hand on the table, making the trio jump. “Of course I’m sure!” He yelled. There was a pause. “You’ll see,” he continued, his voice unnaturally calm. “Before you know it, the Dark Lord will be sitting here, drinking with us.”
Hermione gasped.
Ron gulped.
Harry stared.
“To a successful night,” toasted Goyle.
Harry pulled the extendable ear back out the window.
Hermione slid to the ground. “The Dark Lord?” she whispered. “But he’s gone!”
“Apparently, Lucius Malfoy has found a way to bring him back,” Harry said slowly.
“Well, we’re going to have to stop him!” Ron declared boldly. “He said the secret is in his cane.”
“And he's going to hide the cane in the forest,” Hermione said.
“So we’ll have to destroy it,” Harry decided.
* * *
Late that night, Ron, Harry and Hermione walked across the Hogwarts grounds accompanied by Luna, Neville and Ginny. When they reached the edge of the forest, Harry turned to his companions.
“Now, you all know what we have to do.”
“Destroy Lucius’ cane,” Neville said firmly.
“But we’ll have to find it first,” Harry pointed out.
“What if there’s someone or something guarding it?” Luna asked as if she were about to go on a picnic.
“We’ll figure that out when we have to,” Harry said.
Ginny pulled out her wand. “Are we ready?”
The rest of the group pulled out their wands as an answer.
“Let’s go,” Harry said. The moonlight left him as he strolled into the forest and he was enveloped in darkness.
Once the group was in the forest, there were various murmurs of ‘Lumos’ and lights erupted from the ends of all of their wands.
“I wonder how far in he hid it,” Hermione wondered aloud.
“I doubt he left it on the edge of the forest,” said Harry.
The group made their way deeper and deeper into the forest. After an hour, they still hadn’t found anything.
“Maybe it was a hoax,” said Ginny after a while.
“Why would he make all that up, Ginny?” Ron asked, irritated.
“To lure gullible people like you into a forest!” Ginny said icily.
“I don’t think it’s a hoax, Ginny,” Harry said. “What would he have to gain by it?”
“Look there!” Luna suddenly exclaimed, pointing through the trees.
“Where?” Neville asked, spinning around.
“There,” Luna pointed. “I see a light!”
“Let’s go see what it is!” Ginny said excitedly.
The group rushed forward, toward the light. When they were about fifty feet away they stopped. In the clearing was a stream of green light. Inside the stream of light, a cane floated.
“We found it!” exclaimed Neville. He started to walk to it.
“No, Neville!” Hermione cried. “Don’t go near it.”
“Why not?” Harry asked.
“Doesn’t it look set up? Like he’s expecting us to go out and take it?”
“Well, we could try from here,” said Ginny. "Reducto!” She yelled, pointing at the cane. Her spell bounced off the cane and vanished into the night. She frowned.
The rest of the group tried a few more spells, all with the same outcome.
Harry started to walk forward.
“Harry! What are you doing?” Hermione exclaimed.
“Harry?” Ron shouted.
“Guys! This is what we’ve been looking for,” Harry said.
Hermione ran after him, closely followed by Luna, Neville, Ginny and Ron. Harry stopped walking and Hermione crashed into him. Harry fell to the ground and the group landed on top of him.
“Oh no,” Harry said.
“What?” asked Ginny.
Harry held up a rock he landed on. “It’s a…poooooooorrrttttttkeeeeeey!”
Suddenly everyone felt the same pulling sensation. Then they were falling, falling, falling, then WHAM!
* * *
Harry looked up. His glasses had fallen off. Everything looked hazy. He found his glasses and put them on. They were all lying in an open, lush, green field.
“Where are we?” asked Neville.
“I have no idea,” said Hermione.
They all stood up. Wherever they were, the scenery was beautiful. The bright blue sky was dotted with puffy clouds.
“Maybe there’s something over that hill,” suggested Ginny.
“Perhaps we should look around,” prompted Luna, who didn’t seem at all worried by the situation.
“Yes, lets,” Hermione agreed.
“There are some woods over there,” Ron said. “Maybe the portkey is in there.”
“Maybe,” murmured Harry.
The six teenagers cautiously made their way to the forest. A few steps inside they heard a pounding noise.
“What’s that?” Ginny asked.
In an answer to her question, four horses thundered into the clearing. The rider on the lead horse leapt off. He was dressed in middle-aged clothing and there was a sword at his hip. He was no older than Harry and very handsome. He drew his sword and pointed to Harry with it.
“Step forward,” he said.
Harry ignored Ginny and Hermione’s pleas. He raised his wand.
“You have no sword?” the boy asked.
“No,” said Harry, confused.
“Well,” he said sheathing his sword,” I’ll not fight you if you have nothing but a stick. But before we speak as friends, I must know this; Who’s side are you on?”
“Uh,” said Harry blankly. “The good side.”
“Not very bright is he?” said a girl on one of the horses. She wore a long dress and a bow and quiver were slung across her back.
“Well, it will work for me,” said the boy. “There’s no need to be afraid,” he said to the group standing behind Harry. “We are on the ‘good side’ too, as you call it.” He beckoned to his companions still astride their horses. The two girls and boy slid down with ease.
“This is Susan,” he said pointing to the girl who had spoken of Harry as an idiot. “Edmund and Lucy.” He gestured to the other two. “They’re my sisters and brother. I’m Peter, the Magnificent.” He extended a hand.
Harry, very much confused said, “I’m Harry...” He paused, “The Gryffindor.”
Peter nodded. “Did you win a battle with griffins or something?”
“Um, no. It’s my house.”
Peter now looked confused.
Hermione stepped forward. “I’m Hermione and this is Ron, Ginny, Luna and Neville,” she introduced. “We seem to have lost our way.”
Peter took in their robes. “Where exactly are you from?”
“We were at Hogwarts, but we’re from England,” Hermione said.
“Really?! So are we!” exclaimed Peter.
“Oh, you’ve been called here too!” the youngest girl, Lucy, cried. “That’s wonderful!”
“Called?” Ron asked.
“Well, every time we come to Narnia, Aslan calls us, well, most of the time,” said Edmund.
“We know how we got here, but we’re trying to get back,” Harry said.
“Maybe that’s why we’re here!” Luna said. Everyone turned to her. “Maybe we need Peter’s help to destroy the cane!”
“Cane?” Peter asked.
“Well,” started Harry. “There’s an evil guy named Lucius Malfoy and he hid a cane with a secret of how Voldemort can return…”
“There’s an evil, magic cane we have to destroy,” Luna said dramatically. “If it isn’t destroyed, we will all be in peril!”
Ron raised an eyebrow.
“And you need our help?” Susan asked.
“It seems so,” Hermione said, eager to get going.
“We’d be happy to assist,” Peter said.
“Great!” cried Hermione.
“Now, we just need to find the rock,” said Neville.
“Rock?” Edmund asked.
“Yeah, it will get us back to where we’re from,” said Harry, tired of explaining things.
“This rock?” asked Lucy holding up the portkey.
“Grab her!” yelled Ron.
Everyone lunged forward and took hold of Lucy. They were pulled out of Narnia and into the Forbidden Forest.
“Amazing!” Peter exclaimed once they were in the forest.
“Is that your evil cane?” Susan asked, pointing to the cane.
“Yes,” Hermione said.
“I just thought of something,” Neville said. “What if, in order to destroy the cane, you need a weapon from another world? A different time?”
“Maybe that’s why my spell didn’t work,” said Ginny.
“Could be,” Hermione said thoughtfully.
“I’ll do it. Or try anyway,” said Peter. He drew his sword.
“Be careful, Peter. They said it’s dark magic,” Edmund cautioned.
Peter swung his sword straight through the cane. A moment later there was a loud crack, followed by an explosion that knocked everyone down. The cane shattered and flew in all directions. There was yelling and screaming, then silence.
“Lumos,” Harry said. The light illuminated the clearing and shone over everyone.
“You did it!” cried Luna, hugging Peter.
“Well done, Peter,” Edmund congratulated.
Ron moaned.
“Ron! You’re hurt!” screamed Hermione, wiping blood from his forehead.
Lucy rushed over to Ron and opened a small bottle. She dabbed Ron’s head with the contents.
“Wow!” exclaimed Hermione.
“Thanks,” said Ron, feeling his head.
“Thank you, Peter,” Hermione said. “You’ve pretty much saved the world.”
Susan was frowning. “All this over a cane?”
“It was really important,” Ginny said.
“I’m glad I could have been a help,” said Peter.
“So how do we get back?” Edmund asked.
“The same way you got here,” Harry said.
“Well, come on then,” Peter called his siblings.
“Bye!” called everyone in turn.
Susan turned to Harry and held out something to him. “Here’s my horn. You should hold on to it in case you need our help again. If you need us, just blow on it.”
“Thanks,” said Harry.
“Bye Peter!” Luna waved.
He waved back, smiling. The four children stood around the stone.
“Thank you, Peter,” Harry said. “You’ve done us a great favor.”
“Anytime,” Peter said.
“Bye, Peter,” Harry said as Peter picked up the stone.
“Goodbye, Harry the Gryffindor.”
