Riddle Me This
Jul 20 2008, 02:13 AM
So, do you find yourself hiding your HP obsession? Do you just so happen to skip JKR when someone asks you who you've read lately? Do you even lie sometimes and tell people you don't read HP when they ask flat out.
I, personally, have felt the hate. If you were to tell anyone you read HP they automatically think your crazy; you must have the lunch boxes and trading cards. So what if I do, so what if I don't? I must say I don't think I've ever lied about it because it hasn't (yet) been too big a deal. But why are there so many HP haters out there and why are they forcing some of us to read HP in secret by candle light?

Actually I don't hide my obsession. I mean if someone in my group of friends don't know by now the obsession I have for HP, then apparently you have been hiding under a rock. Everyone in my school that knows me, knows my obsession. I mean yea some friends of mine are annoyed to death. Some can't actually believe that I am actually able to talk about Harry Potter 24/7, other have no clue what I see and the majority think that I am crazy to actually have been able to read the books and actually sit in theatre for 3 hours watching a bunch of people wave sticks. But they just don't understand, as long as they don't hate me for it then I don't mind there opinions. Just as long that doesn't stop them from liking me for me, becuase yea I love harry potter but that's not who I am. Then there are the friends that share the same love that I do and we spent hours talking and surfing the web anything HP related

I don't hide my obsession either! People also think I'm nuts. I think it really irritates my hubby. He actually just told me a few minutes ago "If you spend as much time with me as you do with your Harry Potter friends (meaning VTM) then I wouldn't have a problem" What is up with that! I only pop on here...chat for a few minutes and I'm gone. I do check the site a few times a day...to see if there is anything new..but I'm NOT constantly on here! There aren't very many people that I know that LOVE HP. I think...3 people love HP as much as me that I actually know. That's sad huh. Oh well I'm glad I have you guys!! <<<Big Hugs>>> I don't care if people think I'm nuts

. I LOVE Harry Potter and I talk about HP whenever I get the chance!!!

No I do not. I am a very proud HP fan, and I truly believe that it is totally okay to read, no matter what books. Reading is great for the mind; so should my liking to read be kidden? No thank you

Actually, my friends, if they need any HP question answered, they come to me...I like it!

I don't necessarily hide my obsession from my friends. I am an older HP fan and when I sometimes try to talk about or get excited about HP I tend to get some funny looks. I always try to tell them to "Don't knock it til you've tried it." I am always trying to recruit my friends into reading the series. My husband thinks I'm nuts!! He would probably get into it if he'd actually read them. I just haven't gotten through to him yet.

I dont really hide it at all. I have really opened up bout it. I mean ill get the occasional confused looks and laughs but other then that everything is fine. I talk about it all the time and go into depth about questions that other people come up with about Harry Potter. And I usually am able to answer them.

sometimes i do hide my obsession. it really all depends on who im with at the time. for instacnce, there are some people that dont really like harry potter, so if i were to bring up harry potter in a conversation, theyd probably want to shoot my head off.
and then, there are those friends that love harry potter. and i can just goof off and spill my obsession when hanging around them. and sometimes we get in these debates. oh how i love them.

Only my friends know that I'm obsessed, and my parents, sisters and a couple of my cousins do, but that's about it. I've learned from experience that if a person does not really care about Harry Potter that much, that I shouldn't really say anything. My friends don't really understand why I like it so much, so I don't think that it would be very wise to start sharing my obsession with the whole world. So far, no one at my summer camp has found out about it... And that's about fifty kids.
So, yeah. I hide it sometimes.

Everyone at school knows that I like the series. A lot of my friends like it as well, but some of them don't. If I'm talking to someone and make some random HP comment or joke (which, sadly, happens a lot) the person has every right to say 'I don't really like Harry Potter'. If they don't like it, I respect that, and move on to talking about something else. I don't so much as hide it as avoid the subject when I know people don't want to hear about it. But if someone asks me 'Do you like Harry Potter?' I always answer yes.

It is not like I am hiding my obsession, I just don't talk about it. Well, we had a discussion in my English class about Harry Potter so know they all know that I am a bit mad when it comes to HP. But when I meet knew people, I don't spit out that I love the series. And if I am asked about my favourite book, I will usually answer that there are just so many, and then name a lot and then Harry Potter, also because I truly cannot decide between them. But as you said forsaken, if someone asks me 'Do you like Harry Potter?' I always answer yes (and perhaps give them the link to this site

)

Well, I really like Harry Potter. It's a really good series and everything. But I'm not overly obsessed with it. I just really like to read and that's one of the books that I like to read. I talk about the series a lot with certain people, but I'm not as...obsessed over it like I was years ago. But I still know a whole lot about the books and I still do love the books as well =) Does that make any sense?? haha

I'm really obsessed with Harry Potter, and everybody at school knows it. I'm always called the bookworm and in third grade everyone knew that every day I'd havea ginormous Harry Potter book on my desk. But I don't mind it. I've never lied about reading, or not reading, for that matter, the books. Some of my friends like the books too, but not as much as me?

Aug 5 2008, 02:38 AM
Well, I don't exactly hide my obsession. It depends who I'm talking to. My siblings like Harry Potter as do most of the people in my extended family, but I do have a couple cousins who think Harry Potter is bad, they're parent's don't like 'magic' books, so I just don't bring it up with them. Same with my one friend, she's very Christian and her family doesn't 'do' Harry Potter. I just don't talk about it with her. Every now and then, if we're watching a movie and I see an actor from Harry Potter I'll get all excited and say 'I know that actor from another movie!" And if she asks what movie, I just tell her. I don't rub it in her face, but I don't lie just because she doesn't like the books or movie. But I do talk about Harry Potter a lot. I make comparisons all the time. Like "Oh that could be something from Harry Potter" or something along those lines. I respect that certain people don't like the series and I just am happy that I enjoy it and get to come on VTM and discuss the wonderfulness of HP.

I've never hidden my obsession. Most of my friends are as obsessed as I am, so that's no problem, and although my family doesn't know much about Harry Potter I still talk to them all the time like they do. They just ignore me,
. I've even started having conversations with total strangers about HP, and some of them look at me like I'm crazy and some of them just start talking like I do.

I don't necessarily hide my obsession with Harry Potter, I just don't tend to bring it up in conversation. It's not that I'm ashamed that I know so much about Harry Potter, it's just that my friends aren't as interested as I am. Sure, they like Harry Potter and sometimes we talk about the books once they're released and the films that are about to be released but as far as I know they've only read the books once so I don't bother trying to talk about it in depth the way I could with any of you lot. For all I know they could be obssessed about it as well and doing the same as me, that would be quite a surprise

Aug 18 2008, 04:15 PM
I don't hide it, but then again, I don't think I'm really all that "obsessed." I mean, HP is one of the few series I've reread several times, but to me, that's more because they're so easy for me to read. I can read one in a few hours.
I think the only reason I might not be like "Yeah, I read HP" is because for some reason, people tend to assume you're childish if you read/like Harry Potter (or at least, that's how it's been in my experience). I have no idea why. Just because it's a YA series, maybe? But especially if you read the
books, people seem to somehow assume that you're a crazed fanatic/child. And I'm neither.

I like the series. OK, maybe I love the series.

But still...not crazed fanatic yet!

No one knows that I go on here...
Or that I do fanfic...
My parents think i read the books too much, but they are just so easy to get into and i have a problem getting into books.
a few of my friends are like ' yay new film' or 'new book' and I think one of my closest friends has written a fanfic but she would not show to us...
My mother would go mental if she found out I had been on forums...
I do wish that I did have a friend that would not mind talkign about, not like 24/7 but you know...
There's this girl in my english class who like HP but I have seen the way people look at her when she ever mentions it as an example in lesson
I think that VTM is the only reason I can control this lol

But I do enjoy the series, I just don't talk about it, not many people at my school know, and the only person I really talk about it in real life is my friend Snapestinks**winkwink** otherwise I don't really talk about it because well I don't. I am obsessed with HP and not a bit ashamed of it!
I don't know the statistics of how many older adults read and love HP, but I'm definitely one of them! I got turned on to HP by my daughter, who was 20 at the time, and she and I continue to share this interest. We share the books, see all the movies together (although now we take her husband and mine), we joined Veritaserum together, and we talk about all things HP a lot.
No one has really put me down for being a 52 year old HP fan, but I get funny looks every once in a while. Of course, I've never let it bother me, just as I never let it bother me when I walked into a Star Trek convention dressed as an alien!
I am me and that's all I can be!

It really does depend on who I am talking to about it. I only talk about it at home or around my friends. I have the arm bands that say the four houses. I were them to school almost every day but I try to hide them becuase most kids think if you like HP your a total dork. Which I am not and I dont think no HP fans are us fans just love HP and I dont think theres anything wrong with it.

I don`t hide it. The majority of my friends all like HP, and I`m 23 years old. I like having intelligent conversations about Harry Potter, and I was fortunate enough to land a job at a place where a co-worker (possibly in her late 30`s, early 40`s) was really obsessed with the series (her desk space was completely covered in Potter merchandise! It was great!). The rest of the staff all enjoyed it too, so there was a nice friendly atmosphere, and at breaks and lunch times we would have nice long HP discussions. I had worked as a Graphic Artist for a large city library, making signs and posters and things, and was the youngest person in the building

Aside from the patrons, of course. I was the youngest
staff member, I should say!
IaPotterLvr, I am really glad to hear that you share this passion with your daughter. I wish my own mother would take as much interest in the things I like. So far, she has disapproved of everything I enjoy, saying I should "grow up." My aunt, however, has become a huge Potter fan when she happened upon my Potter books this year. She could not put them down, and would read them late into the night. She`s also watched all my Harry dvds! Now she is eagerly awaiting the last few movies with the rest of us. My dad has watched the first four films with me, and my brother
says he`s totally against everything HP, but he HAS watched them! He was even the one to suggest ordering the Chamber of Secrets on satellite back when that movie had come out! So I guess he
secretly likes it

I couldn't car less what others think - HARRY POTTER FAN AND PROUD!
Seriously though, I don't hide what I like. I go around in public wearing a long black coat that resembles wizard robes and a gryffindor scarf and sometimes even a wizard's hat. Crazy, you may say, but then Harry Potter has had such a profound influence upon my life that I am not scared to show that I love it.
I have had a lot of slagging particularly when I was at school about being a Harry Potter fan but somehow that makes it all the more worth it - you know that others know you are a serious Harry Potter fan. And besides, the people who do the slagging obviously have no life themself or what others like wouldn't bother them.

Like most I am hit or miss as to whether I share my HP interests. I see no reason to push on someone who isn't interested but I really enjoy finding other people who find HP fascinating. I really enjoy reading fan fictions as much as J.K.'s versions of the story because like everyone else some thing didn't turn out as I would have like.

I had just got interested in Harry Potter this summer, actually. My cousin came in and said I should read the books. After reading the 2nd book through, I was hooked! Now, my friends probably think I'm a freak because I can make any reference (almost) HP related. I search all the time for HP gear on Amazon, it comes out of my mouth everyday, and is almost always on my mind.
It's something that I really enjoy reading because most of the kids at my school don't really care for it. I think JKR is a genius!, and I try writing my own fanfics, to continue the story. Ha.
I try not to hide it, but it just depends who I'm with really. From now on, I'm going to show my pride without fear! I'm a Harry Potter fan and I'm so glad!

I have to second that! I've got ONE friend out of all my friends that ISN'T into Harry Potter at all and I don't push it with her. When Harry Potter is mentioned around her, she just rolls her eyes and moves onto another subject. But we are best buds, and nothing, not even Harry Potter can take away our friendship!
Anyway,
Anyone and everyone who knows me knows I'm into Harry Potter! I don't hid my obsession. I've got all the books in hardcover. I've got all the PC games (except my Chamber of Secrets one isn't working

). I've got several of the Harry Potter 3D puzzles, framed and up on my wall. I did start making a Harry Potter scrapbook at one time, but I quit making it and gave it to a younger girl I know who is VERY obsessed with Harry Potter. OMG, talk about obsession. Your not obsessed with Harry Potter until you name your cat Tom Felton! That's what this younger girl told me she did when I gave her the scrapbook. CRAZY!!!

I really become more and more obsessed everyday! And guess what.... we have a recently obsessed HP fan, my brother. He got SS for Christmas and now he and I talk about HP all the time! Now, I'm not the only "sane" one in my family, haha.
I don't hide my obsession as much anymore because if people hate it, then they should just get over that fact. I found out on... Tuesday that one of my friends is really obsessed and she's only seen the movies! I told her she's missing out, and she wanted to know who died in DH, but she wouldn't let me tell her that Voldemort died instead of Harry, only everyone else. AAH! It's crazy, but the weird obsession keeps me sane when life around me is, well either boring or driving me nuts. It gives me somewhere to turn to.
I agree that I don't push it with other people. I suggest that the books are better than the weird Twilight obsession, but if they don't like it, I just walk away. It's there choice; mine just's to love it!

Alicia Jonae, that's why I always make people read the books first.
I started reading the books in 2001 before the first film came out. I started with GoF since I won it in a competition and went to see PS the next month in the cinema. I thought Harry Potter was just a stupid fad before I got into it - HOW VERY WRONG I WAS!!!
"And once you've seen the movie, how can you read the book, i guess, right?!"
on the contrary, seeing PS film made me want to read the books all the more!!!
But yes it is crazy seeing the films but not reading the books!!!!

I was at my local Kwik Trip store (when they only had VHS's at the time) and saw 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' was out and I begged my mom to let me rent it. I might have read the book first, b/c I got the paperback version on my birthday, but which year, i don't remember. Ever since then though, I've read the books before watching the movie ... I saw Philosopher's Stone before I read the book. But the film was such a wonderfully accurate porttrayal that I didn't mind in the end. I'm just glad I read the rest of the books first especially PoA so that I could form an untainted image of Sirius for myself.

I don't hide my obession, I don't think I can. I relate most things to Harry Potter. I just wrote an English essay using Snape for an SAT practice. Even my teachers know I'm obessed.
As for the conversation, I had read the first two books when the movie came out, when I was in fourth grade. I was in the process of reading the third one when it came out. I think the four of them were out when I finished PoA, and after that I had been getting them the days they came out, my grandmother would always take me to buy them, since it was her bad idea to get me my first Harry Potter book
