For my opinion i prefer the books to the films because simply the Harry potter books offer much more of the story on what is happening whilst in the movies they do not put so much more attention into the minor parts whereas the books do, for example in Chamber Of Secrets movie it doesn't show the part where Lockhart is telling hagrid to do something the proper way(havn't read the book in a while) Where in the books they do also where Hagrid also asks Harry for a signed photograph then says "on'y jokin'" my choice would have to be that the Books are 90% better than the Movies.

i think books are obviously much better than movies as in the books you can race your imagination to anywhere(and not to mention there are so many events that are really important and are not shown in the movies like fleur being a half-veela...and much more)
so, in my opinion books are the BEST.

The best part of the books is the fact that we actually see what Harry is thinking or feeling. Like in HBP, when Ron ate the candy doped with love potion and said he loved her Harry was thinking, "If Ron starts calling her Lav-Lav he was going to put his foot down" or something to that effect. We'll probably miss that part in the movie, or the "beast" in his "chest" when it comes to Ginny.
Yes, we have more visual stimulation (obviously) but I don't think it makes up for the emotional charge we're missing.

The books are by far better than the movies, but the movies give us an insight into Jo's mind and how she really views all of the places that she has created. For the most part, everything has matched up for me, but I started reading after I had seen the first two movies, so I guess I had a bit of a bias. I wonder if Grimmauld Place will look as I imagine it, or the Dept of Mysteries?

I started reading the books before the movie PoA came out so I already had an image as to what the castle, and classrooms and stuff like that looked like.
GoF was probably a huge mixture as to what I was expecting. The 'Priori Incantatem' in the graveyard was pretty much close, but the entire triwizard tournament was not at all what I was thinking it would be.
According to the book Viktor Krum was not that good looking, but only popular because of his status as a Quidditch star. The movie Viktor was gorgeous.
Cedric Diggory was supposed to be gorgeous, but I thought he was only 'okay' looking.
Like I said before the movies lack the emotional ties we have to the characters, so I do prefer those over the movies anyday.

The books are always better, its just how it is. the problem that i have is if i watch the movie first there is no way i will read the book, i dont know why but i just dont want to. so i always read and then watch. but in this case harry potter books are way better than harry potter movie.
First, in the books you can be as imaginative as you want to be, in movies its really hard to show such things,
second, movies are never the same length as the books, so they cut out scenes.
but by watching the movies you can actually see how all the magic and animals look like.

I really do like the films and I can't wait until they come out but I LOVE the books. Every time I read the its just magic. I already know the story, I know what's gonna happen but the emotions are the same every time... every time it's like you never read it before and that is just amazing!! JK Rowling really knows what she's doing ...
So I would say an 8 out of 10 for the movies and an 11 out of 10 for the books :-)

I love the books and the movies. When one of the books has been made into a movie, it makes that book complete to me...if that makes any sense!
They are both two different things so I can appreciate them just as much but differently.

i must admit i prefer the books, mainly because so much is cut in the movies; the books give a greater insight into what is happening, and i agree it shows what harry is feeling much better than can be portrayed on screen.
having said that, i love the films and i'm glad they decided to make them, the only thing is i get really annoyed when they cut important parts from the story; at those times im glad i read the books first, because you can fill in the blanks

The books are definitely better!!! There is so much more information, and we get to see alot more of the characters and the world of Harry Potter! There is no comparison!
The movies are great, but Id choose the books over the movies anyday!

I agree with NeferAkoriK - the books provide so much more information. Plus, I love the way J.K Rowling writes...

. I love the movies for the visual aspect of seeing the books, and staring at Daniel Radcliffe in the bath scene,

. Overall, for me, the books are better.

i strongly agree with vidhi radcliffe and all those who love the books more than the movies. i find that the movies tend to leave out things, and i know that they may not need to be included in the movie but some mention of some scenes would be great but then again a movie with all the details would of course be too long but anyway my point is that i love the books and love the movies too but books are by far the best way to know the whole jist of the storyline than just seeing the movies but some people may prefere watching the movies than reading the books and thats fine but books are the way to go with most movies.

The books of course. Just think that you could never thought about reading the books, and you would only see the movies. And now think of what total less information would you have!

i actually absolutly love the books more than the movies!
i man, they always leave some important things out of the movie that happen in the books! i hate how they do that! i mean, does it really matter that the movies stay as only 2 and a hlaf hours long? why cant they be longer than that?
anyways, ya i perfer the boks for their length and the fact that you get all the details needed.

Definitely the books. Reason being because, like most book-lovers, the movies cut out bits that you really liked.
Also another reason is because books in general especially novels can leave you to create your own world they way you like it. Most of us now when we read the books picture Harry Potter looking like Daniel Radcliffe, Hermione as Emma Watson and Ron as Rupert Grint etc. Before the movies came out I had a different picture of what the characters looked like. Sometimes it's relieving to be able to use the movie as a scene setting but sometimes the imagination wants something different

I prefer the books over the movies because the movies cut out many scenes that you may find quit amusing, other reason is that, that the books can explain much more about the emotions and feelings the characters have at the point. This may not be that clear in the movies. They also cut out information like fluer being half-veela and dobby giving harry the gillyweed instead of neville. There are many other differences too.I prefer books because the way J K Rowling writes the emotions, they cannot be acted out the same,so its a huge difference between the books and the movies.I like the movies too because we can get a better visualization(thats what we are basicly doing in every class at school

,I know I sound a bit like Hermione over here

) of whats in the book. But I still prefer the books than the movies.

I truthfully cant pick one over the other. I love the books. The books give you a real in depth look at what is happening and how people are feeling. The movies cant really tell you how people are feeling, and they cant get into every single thing that the book gets into, but the movies are great becasue you get to see the magical world og harry potter. You get a visual of what your reading about.
Ginevra_hena
Jan 25 2007, 11:54 AM
Even I can't really pick one over the other. But books are really more important than the movies cos the movies can't show what EXACTLY is happening out there. So, books are my choice any day

I think almost everyone will agree that the books are better. They tell you so much more and give soo mcuh detail, but they still leave you room to explore the pace with your mind. They cut so much out of the movies and change things too. With the books it's like totally different almost. It's like your not only seeing what everybody else in the theater is seeing. Your seeing your version of this magical world. The books sort of trap you and you zone out from the rest of the world and they get you anxious to keep reading and never stop and want to know what's next. the books make you laugha nd cry. The movies make you laugh sure, but they don't make everyone cry alot. They certainly don't include as much as the books do. So the books to me are far more important and I love them.

The books are the better of the two hands down. There is no competing. But (this will never happen) if the directors could make it to where it is identical to the last sentence, then I might actually consider it. But I am for the books no doubt in my mind.

I think that the books are much better than the movies. For one the books include more info. Also, they hav more action and show what the character(s) are thinking.

I soooo agree. I mean, for one, movies leave out so much. hehe. To heck with this, we're making a list.

-books have more detail
-books are more personal
-you can read books at your OWN speed, rather than a 2 hour gulp. lol.
-you're actually forced to THINK with books. hehehe.
-books are ACCEPTABLE in school. lol. (unlike iPods and such

).
-movies are just so easy to get a basic outline fro mthat they're no fun at all. D:<
-you can re-read and re-read it for hours without getting tired of it. (unlike movies which just give you headaches....).
Welp, that's it for now. lol.

Of course the books are better than the movies!!! THe movies doesn't even compare to the books. The books are GENIUS.
Also, the most important parts of the books are sometimes not in the movies. And in the movies, there isn't enough time to get sucked into the mystery. In the books, within the first 7 chapters, you'll feel as if you're solving the mysteries with them.
That being said, i still like the movies. Coz that way i can imagine the actors talking and walking and doing stuff while reading. Get me?

Well personally I like the books better, the movies are like the books but they're not as good in my opinion, the books tell you what the characters are thinking at the time and they give you perspective of the character, although I love the movies don't get me wrong I own all of them.

Many of my friends love the movies, but either don't have time to read the books or just don't want to. I myself think the books are brilliant, far better than the movies, but the movies aren't all that bad. The movie makers have a difficult job keeping us fans happy, I mean they can't really put
every detail in a 2 and a half to three hour production, as much as we would like them to (come to think of it, I wouldn't mind watching a 5 hour movie, if more details were added

)

The books are way better than the movies. I prefer the books because you are getting all of the detail and you know what the characters are thinking. Also the the movies leave certain things out that I feel are important to the story line, like who the maruaders are for example.

The general concensus seems to be that the books are better and I would have to agree. There is just something about settling into a book and letting your imagination carry you into the glorious world of Harry Potter that JKR created...it's brilliant.
The movies don't capture half of what is in the books and I cringe to think what favorite parts will be left out of OOTP, HBP and Deathly Hallows. If the Directors could fire their editing team, I would gladly sit in the movie theater for a 3-4 hour Harry Potter movie.

Apr 20 2007, 07:40 AM
yes i agree. i wouldn't complain at a 3 or 4 hour HP movie. it's my idea of fun

the books capture so much more, the films are quite stunted and your imagination can't roam free, in, as you say, the glorious world of Harry Potter.
So i think the books are better

The movies are amazing but the books are way way better; but i guess it its kind of hard to turn a book into a movie. I probably didn't like the the movie as much as the book because of how many scenes they missed out, but i guess they couldn't fit all the scenes into the movie; so i really don't know which is better.

I would have to say that the books are better. The books are so much more descriptive and enjoyable and you get a lot more details out of the books which the movie can never do. However, I still have a certain amount of love for the movies because it was the first movie that got me interested in the bookos but now I prefer the books way more.

I think that everyone who is really a HUGE Harry Potter fan is going to say the books. I am no different. Even though I saw the first movie before I saw the book, since that time I've fallen in love with the books! The movies are great too but they could never measure up to the books.

i prefer the books because they give you alot more detail and the films have a time limit to try and put as much as that detail into the film as possible and occaisonally the most important information is left out and this is a slight spoiler, OoTP Leaves out quite alot of information and isnt exaclty much like the book.
the first two films were the most true to the book but that could have been due to the fact they wernt exactly big books so they had enough information that could be put into the films.

Books definately! I mean the movies are great but the books just have so much more in them and the movies are so cut down. You can't blame them for cutting out lots of things in the movies because it has to be done, but the books explain things so much better and in more detail. The books also have more humour and little subplots in them.

I'd definitely choose the books over the movies. I just feel that there's so much more to experience with the books and it's easier to build a deeper connection to the characters and story that way. Besides, the movies leave a lot out, and some of the delicacies on paper don't quite translate into film.

The books without a doubt. You can't just fit a book like that into a 2 1/2 hr film. it would a 6 hr film. the books have so much more detail in them and J.K. rowling writes them really well. the movies don't stand a chance. SS and CoS were good and were really faithfull to the book but as they get lengthier the less detail they can have in the them.

I don't think they can be compared. The books and the movies are both great, but they are different genres of entertainment. We as Harry Potter fans are quite lucky to have both the books and movies.

I think the books are definitely better, because they tell the story exactly as it was meant to be told: all the details, all the descriptions, and all the plot twists in the way they would be most enjoyable and interesting. The movie takes a lot of liberties and cuts a lot out, and it makes the story seem less complex (because, duh, it IS

). You can get into the characters' heads better in the books as well...Also, in my opinion, the movies are sometimes altered to be less dark or frightening, because they bank on a younger audience to be their general targeted interest group (and, well, it shows...).

I love the books. They are the inspiration for the movies. The movies are great for quick entertainment, and it is nice to watch them. The books are something you can get lost in, and really get involved with the story through your own imagination. I love the books, and they are so well written. I like the adaptations of the movies, all though some of them I have not been completely pleased with, but for the most part, they have done a fairly good job bringing the books to life. I so love the books, and think they are better.

I love the books so much more then the movies. In the books the characters are so much more developed. I mean in the movies the characters just seem to have one or two traits. Also in the movies (except from the 2nd of course) there aren't any of my amazing house elfs

how could you love the movies more then the books lol

I think the books are better but that's the case with just about any book made into a movie. Books are able to go into so much more detail and everything whereas in movies there's no way they can possibly fit everything in or else the movies would be about 5 hours long!

I like the books better, because there are more scenes. But they don't want to make the movies too long and I think they're right, but in TOOTP they show a lot of the funny scenes not [again me forcing my opinion]. And that sucks.
