I definately like the books a whole lot better. They have so much more information. The movies would be so much better if they were 4 hours long.

The books are better. Why? They're funnier, they've been put together better than the movies have, and they're more explanatory. If you watched the movies without reading the books first, you probably would wind up super confused by them.
I've been saying for a long time that they should have waited to make movies at least until DH was released.

Not wanting to sound redundant with everyone, but I have to agree. I think the books are way better than the movies. Granted, it's great to actually see the book playing before your eyes on the TV screen, but the movies lack the books' details and spirit.
There's just so much info that the movies left out. Not just important info, but the humorous parts, too. For example, in OotP. I was so looking forward to seeing Fred and George's antics in the movies but the majority was cut out. Quite disappointing.
And I completely agree with E.Austin. For someone who hasn't read the HP series, some of the movies, especially OotP, would seem quite confusing as to what was going on and why.

Well, there is no question for me, at least. The books are awesome, amazing, incredibly descriptive and easy to follow.
When they first announced that they were going to make a movie, I totally freaked out. How would they manage to reproduce on screen a world so complex as the one I've read about? Make the spells, the animals, the right performance... It was just not possible. And also, I was very scared of the parts that they might cut out. (As bad as I hate Cho, there's no equal to having Marietta with all the boils in her face and then having a concrete-like makeup cover it up on HBP.)
Now I'm extremely mad that I can't put 7 movies next to 7 books, because they can't cut out enough from the last one but they made a terrible massacre with the other 6...
When I fist went to the movies to watch PS/SS all my family fell asleep because they didn't get it. But I did, because I had read the books. It's not so easy to follow unless you know the whole magic behind it.
The books have lots of little jokes, lots of character reactions, and the movies don't portray the characters as they truly are. For example Ron: he's funny and smart, but in the movies, we see him as just a follower and in the book he's special, he's got lots of personality and there's no room for the real Ron in the movies.
The books rock! The movies are okay.

wow okay im going to be the only one who thinks this but i found the movies better. Not that the books were bad, they were awesome but for me its easier to see people and places rather than reading there description

but thats just my opinion!

The books are my favorite over the books. That's how it always is for me. The books always top their movies because they always give you that inside look and personal touch that a movie is never able to bring to me.

I love the books more than the movies for very obvious reasons:
1) The books can be as long as Rowling wants them to be. Unlike the movies, there is no budget.
2) Rowling is extremely descriptive. She describes things very vividly and in a way that gives people different images of various characters. The movies can change these images, and most people prefer what they think is the correct image.
3) The most obvious reason-in the books, the characters aren;t eighteen in their sixth year!

I like the books way better! The books have so much more detail than the movies. The movies are great but sometimes they leave out key points to describing how a character got they way they did. Sometimes also the movies have extra scenes that J.K. didn't mention in the book and that throws a lot of fans off. I really am excited for half-blood prince though, I can't believe they moved it from July 17th to the 15th. Im still very excited!

As much as i love the movies, i have to say that the books are definitely way better. JKR provides so many great descriptions and explanations of the characters, places, and just what's going on in the story. Like others have said i feel like the movies lack information and leave out a lot of details that happen in the books, and to tell the truth i really wouldn't mind having to watch a four or five hour long Harry Potter movie, to me it would be so worth it.
I am pretty excited to see HBP come out this summer, from the trailers it looks like it's going to be really good. Hopefully when they make Deathly Hallows they'll be able to include much more information from the book with it being split into two parts.
Anyways.. in my opinion the books are much better than the movies.

Personally, I find that the books trump the movies always, except in some rare cases. The books give you so much more detail and let you know how the character is feeling instead of just showing you a facial expression and expecting you to figure out what the actor is trying to get through to you. My sister always told me that books were better than the movies and I've grown to agree with her. I just think that the books enlighten you more than a movie ever could.

They both have their good qualities as what they are. However the books are the real story than the movies. The books are a lot better, most likely. POA however I think did an equal balance for movie service and book service.

Yes I do think both have their own unique qualities, books and movies.
I find that when I read books, my imagination can take me far away and my thoughts seem to generate in a different part of my brain. Also, I can slow down or speed up, like when I get to a particularly savoury part, I can chew it over more slowly, like eating a really delicious piece of chocolate.
When I watch movies, that is a different sensation altogether and I love the special effects that are in most movies nowadays, and seeing the wonderful people act their parts, and hearing the words spoken from someone elses viewpoint (when you read, yours is the only viewpoint). My visual senses are stimulated differently when I watch movies and I can be absorbed just as much, but in a different way (as reading). So both media offer me the chance to escape, which I think we are all looking for more and more these days.
So, which is better, books or movies? The answer was given to me once by a friend in answer to a different question: "which is more important, breathing in or breathing out?"

The movies are great, especially the first to third, since it's almost exactly like the book. However I do agree that books are the first step to everything and will always be the greater good. HP books really tell alot, and you can definitely find out what the character is thinking, but in the movies, you don't know what's going through their minds and all. I do believe that movies are sometimes close to books, but so far, no movie has ever been exactly like the books. Books are so much better actually

This is not a hard one... the books!
The movies definitely don't do the books justice... a feat that would have been nearly impossible do to the average time an audience can sit and enjoy a movie and the size of the books.

This is an issue that Ivīe been willing to bring up for a long time. I remember the first time I saw Poa my expectations were skyhigh and... I ended up hating it. I felt let down and was very upset about what the filmmakers had done then I saw it again...and loved it!!!
Iīm dead serious after knowing that it wasnīt what I had been expected the movie grew on me and has since become my favorite of the series.
What Iīm trying to say is that while tha books donīt do the books justice if we go in to them with smaller expectations and donīt expect masterpieces thay might be more enjoyable. I mean isnīt the point of movies to be entertained?
I think if you donīt expect as much these movies could probably be more fun.
Anyway the books will always be superior but the one time one of these movies actually managed to do justice to the book was the cave scene in HBP. I mean wow that was just about right in every way, the pacing wasnīt too fast both Dan and Michael were great and they captured the horror of the chapter almost perfectly.
When Dumbledore creates the "ring of fire" for lack of a better word I was amazed by what I saw and the scene as awhole will go down as both the closest these movies has come too the books and one of the greatest times Ivīe ever had at the cinema.

Is there anyone who prefers the movies, seriously? If there weren't the books, the movies wouldn't have existed in the first place. And the books have much more details, the movies are not that accurate and you definitely don't feel the same when you watch them as you feel when you read the books. When you read, there's no boundaries, your imagination can travel anywhere. I am not a fan of the movies. I am a fan of the books.
