I love SS and CoS movies, however I think the books are much better. Anyone else think so? :?:

Well, what I love about books is that length really doesn't matter- you don't have to fit it all into a two and a half hour length to try to suit everyone, and you can write what you want.
Movies just have to be cut, shredded, etc, and it's hard for them to live up the book.

I agree with both fo you.The books are amazing and the movies are god.But it must be really hard ot turn a book into a movie.SS and COS are fantasy books. They can't do any magic trick so the movies can't fallow each words of the books but they did a good job.

SS and CoS are two great books! I think the movies are just as good as the books, but that's probably beacuse (ehm..I've said it many times) I read the books after I had seen the movies! However, I think the books are written so good that I loved reading them!
I actually laughed when I read about Nearly Headless Nick and that he couldn't participate in the Headless Hunt (if that was the name of it) in CoS! hehe...

i really did like the movies.
But i was a bit dissapointed with the first one. i guess it's because i thought that it would be exactly like the books.
i didn't expect each and every incident to be shown but i thought that that at least the incidents shown would be the way they are described in the book. For example, the scene of the detention that harry, draco... are serving, neville is also there but is not shown so in the movie.

Yes, i think the movies were good but when you read the book you started to imagine and creating your own movie, and then when you watch it you said:
 The are a lot of details that are not mention.
 I hope that scene in other way, with more action or something.
And one thing I dont like in the Movies was that the Hermione was acting like if she likes Harry.. and they are just friends..

I agree I don't like the way they make HP too much emotional. When I read the books I never noticed any hugs and things like this : :?

What!?!? Of course the movies has to be a bit emotional!! I think the directors want to show what Harry really feel because he haven't really met his parents etc. And their job is to show the caracters feelings so that we can understand them etc. I like when movies are a bit emotional as well as funny, exciting etc.
But that's my opinion!

I agree.
I was looking forward to the ghost party in CoS!!
I was also a bit suprised that in the first one, Ron and Hermione both say Voldemorts name like theres no problem at all.
Naz
Jun 21 2004, 10:26 PM
yeh i know. werent they supposed to be afraid to say his name?
Ceres
Jun 22 2004, 02:34 AM
I concur. Both great movies, but not up to par with the books.
In the books, Hermione doens't utter the name of You-Know-Who until book 5... and Ron, if I remember correctly, still refuses to utter it, let alone hear it.
Naz
Jun 22 2004, 10:08 PM
did they say voldemorts name in the movies?
peaceoflorien
Jun 26 2004, 04:55 PM
Yeah, it cheezed me off that they took out Hermione's chance to shine in movie one. When she figures out the bottles with pure intelligence, it proves her worthy. In the movie she just is the maiden that has to care for ron. Dont get me wrong, Ron is my favorite character in the entire series, second only to Tonks, but Hermione deserved more credit than that.

Jun 26 2004, 05:19 PM
lol, yeh definately. but then the movie would have been "too long"

Jun 26 2004, 06:21 PM
Is 5 hours really too long? It would have suited me just fine =P

Jun 27 2004, 05:32 PM
lol me too. i dont care how long the movies are just as long as dont cut stuff out
peaceoflorien
Jun 27 2004, 08:39 PM
Yeah, I'd be more disappointed if they cut half the scenes than if I had to pay more to see a longer movie, you know what i mean?

i loved the movies... but there was one fatal mistake...
in the first book... harry gets dudley's second room... as compensation for all his messed up years... in the movie he doesn't...
then the second movie begins... with harry in that room! my parents (who hadn't read the books) were all confused an all... we saw the first film the night before we saw the second and they didn't understand a bit of that thing... stupid:?
yeh, i know that was a mistake that i noticced right away

Jul 4 2004, 04:55 AM
Yeah, I hope that they dont take out as much as in the last 3 movies. But I dont think they cant fit everything important in the movie though, but I wish they could.
i think that these 2 movies were great...but i dont think the movie versions can ever be as good as the books.

I've just edited the title of this topic to include all the books and the movies because at the time it was created, only two movies were out, so to widen the topic a bit, feel free to discuss all the movies and books here now, not just the first two.

Well, I Think The Books And The Films Are Just The Same Good!
I Think The Actors In Harry Potter Is Very Good!
But The Books Are Very Good Too!
My Favourite Book Of Them All, (Five!) Is The Fourth Or The Third....
Or, I Donīt know...
All Of Them Is So Good!

The books are the best because they are pact with more details and for those who don't read the books, but view the movies, they won't really get much of the outside stuff that's inside the books itself. The movies sometimes ruin your image of a character which you already placed inside your head. When I was reading the books I pictured the character looking not like the ones in the movies, then when the movies come along, I saw a whole different person. The movies are fun to watch, but I have to say the books bring out the best.

I think the books are the best because when they sho the films, they can't integrate all the story in one films of 2:20.
but the films are great too

As a general rule, I don't like something that has "immigrated" Books to movies, movies to books, they just don't work. Two good ones are LotR and the Harry Potter movies. But they're the exception, and the books are still much, much better.

Since, I've seen the movie first before reading the books, it will be both. But I guess, it would be the books if it's over- all. Because it makes my imagination work and it gives much more details and the emotions are stronger, for me, in the books. I'm not expecting to be carried away by the actors but by the words itself.

I totally think the books are better, because they're what's truly happening, not a commercialized verison of it. They're the original story, and I love it!

Maybe it's just because I'm from America, or maybe because I'm just going through my teen years, but I thought that the movies were horrible. In my opinion, the movies were way too proper. They didn't give off that sense of foreboding the books give off. The action doesn't seem like action. It seems like "Oh no! The hero's in trouble! Time to miraculously win somehow!" This went for PoA too. You just didn't get the feel that anyone was really in danger. Well, I guess that's what I have to live with, what with the WB doing it. If it were really up to me, I'd have much more dangerous music to it, less proper scripting, quite a bit less over pronouncing, and by far, the most important, get rid of those English accents. I normally have no problem with English accents, but they really ruined the emotion that's supposed to be happening for me. Books all the way!

I don't even think this question is necessary...The books are and always will be first in my heart. I, personally, think they are constructed with much more feeling and emotion that the movies could ever contain. There is no comparison in my opinion.

LOL. Bandoth, that's awesome. Get rid of the accents...spoken like a true Yankee....
It just seems less *real* to us when people are using big words and stuff...gets us country folk confused.
Yeah, I like the books a lot beter, but that's because I've got the greatest special effects in my head, and the characters always look exactly right. Movie's have their place, but I don't think that books should be translated onto the screen. They usually go bad, like in the Limony Snicket movie, though they can be sometimes good, like in LotR. The Harry Potter movies are just impossible to do well, as so much of the stuff that fills up our volumns are thoughts, and narrative; something movies don't have.
I join the masses: their different mediums.
That said, I always go with the books on this one. I'm a much better director.
