Well, I'll admit that I've yet to see any of the Austin Powers movies, so I've never seen Elizabeth Hunley act in a film.
Pictures of her do look somewhat like Bellatrix Lestrange, though.
Anyway, most people who have seen her in movies seem to either be VERY happy about the rumor or VERY upset about it - what are your thoughts?

i find her to be rather beautiful !

Very **beeping** upset would be my reaction. As I said in the other thread......

'Order of the Phoenix' casting rumor Written by Matthew at 4:17 PM, 02-04-05 - 18 comments Now that GOF filming is wrapping up, the time is ripe for some Order of the Phoenix casting rumors! The first was reported by CNBC News last night, and according to Dark Horizons, actress Elizabeth Hurley has been offered a part as an "evil witch" in the film (possibly Miss Lestrange?). Hurley has appeared as Vanessa Kensington in two Austin Powers movies. |
Dear god, please tell me this can't be true.....I really am completely losing all faith in WB if they cast that utterly ridiculous woman in such a pivotal role. She's comedy, for goodness sake.....is she supposed to be able to carry off the sheer, dark, malevolent evil that is Bella? **shudders**
Know that thread about chucking our books out the window? Well, if they cast her as Bella, I'll be chucking myself out of the window.
Try Helena Bonham Carter or Emily Watson, that would be closer to the mark.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
See? Not very happy...was I?
And beauty has nothing to do with it....the woman can't act. I've seen more convincing actresses on QVC.

Feb 7 2005, 02:00 AM
Haha ouch... QVC... that was a good one Dana
Is Rachel Wiesz (Sp??) from the UK? She had an accent in the Mummy, but I'm not sure if she's actually from the UK. But I thought her acting was ok.
As for Liz Hurley, I think she should be used as a last resort, I'll admit Bellatrix is a little comedic with her taunts and stuff so maybe a comedy actress would be ok for the role.

Feb 7 2005, 03:39 AM
She's hilariously ridiculous in 'Bedazzled' and both of the Austin Powers movies. The only reason why she's still in the movie business is probably of her alluring assets (if you know what I mean...)
Well, Bellatrix can look comedic at some line but still OotP can be considered as a serious story as well and Bella is not always comedic. There's a dark evil enigmatic aura surrounding her. Her presence should brought the hair on the back of your neck stand straight. I think Harry wouldn't care a bit if Liz Hurley was to play Bella. (or maybe he would, but probably because of the wrong reason!

)
Helena Bonham Carter was good in the Hallmark's Merlins series. But still, there's something amiss if she's to play Bella. Nah... there has to be someone else.
And yes, caitlin. Rachel Weisz is from UK. But I thought she's too.... soft... to play Bella. No... IMO, there has to be someone else.
Who's that woman in your siggy again, Louise?

Louise
Feb 7 2005, 12:54 PM
Emily Watson. She just really had the image down pat when I saw her in 'Equilibrium'. I have to disagree with you guys in finding Bella comedic though....those taunts she makes are incredibly cruel and vindictive. I didn't find them funny at all. This is the type of subtlety that will be lost if Liz Hurley gets cast.
I know you shouldn't really typecast people because it's not fair and not always accurate anyway - I mean, Celia Imrie was just incredible in 'A Dark Adapted Eye' a couple of years ago and she was really famous as part of the Victoria Wood/Julie Walters comic thing at one time, so I'm not saying that people who do comedy roles can't adapt....my point is that I just don't think she can act, period. Comedy or otherwise.
Rachel Weisz is pretty good, but I'm not sure whether she would be right. I dunno....I can't really judge because I've only seen her in the Mummy films, but I've seen Helena Bonham Carter in a lot of different things, and I think she's do a pretty good job. Anyone but Liz Hurley.
Please.
I'm begging....

I like Liz Hurely but that doesn't mean I want her in an HP film. As for Rachel, I've seen her in a fair few things, she has great range, but again. I don't think she's quite right, but better her than Liz.

i hope the rumor's 100% false. elizabeth hurley is so WRONG to play bella. besides the fact, as someone mentioned, that she seems to be more of a comedic actress, i think she's too beautiful to play bella. the book describes her (from what i remember) as being really sallow-faced with some grayish hair and looking like she once was pretty but not anymore. i picture her being completely vindictive looking. you can't pull that off seriously if you're a beautiful actress. you can't have fans looking at someone playing bellatrix lestrange and thinking "she's so hot."

I thought the actress that played 'Queen Mab/Lady of the Lake' in the Merlin's series could do well as Bella. She's really evil in it and she's a witch too... then when I checked IMDB to find her name, only then did I realised that it was played by none other than Miranda Richardson. Sounds familiar?

Yap, she's already cast to play Rita Skeeter... why in the world didn't I noticed her face before?

Gotta think of someone else that could play her then... I'm sure I've come across some evil woman character in movies before...

Shame as I think that Miranda Richardson would maybe have been better cast as Bellatrix Lestrange. (maybe she could play both, the wonders thay can do with make-up these days)
I have 3 more names to throw into the mix, Sigourney Weaver, Anjelica Huston and Rebecca DeMornay (Think, The hand that rocks the cradle)

Liz Hurley is a RUBBISH actress. Bella needs to be battle-worn, older, like.....Miranda Richardson! She is cold, harsh, and sarcastic, and I can imagine her and Snape in Film 6 arguing! She is a perfect aunt of Draco...
By the way, this is my first Veritaserum post, hi everyone!

Aug 3 2005, 09:04 PM
Really? I always thought of her similar to Claudia Black, but it didn't hit me until last week that she was the perfect person for the Bellatrix in my head
Ygraine
Aug 4 2005, 12:10 AM
Claudia Black? That's Aeryn in Farscape isn't it? (Loved that show, not on any more, in the UK at least.

) she would be good as it, but shes Austalian...it's in the commonwealth does that count?
Miranda Richardson would be fab for Bella, especially with that husky voice. I loved That Merlin thing, i have it on Video, i remember when it was on the TV my mum gave me a massive 'Ha Ha, told you so...'
Looks like Ygraine (Cornwalls wife/Arthurs mother) is a real name after all

but they still spelt it wrong.
yeah, don't particulary like the idea of Liz Hurly as Bella either. Shes got the looks but she can't act! Helena Bonham Carter perhaps?
Whos's directing OoTP anyway? Is it anonced yet?
DarkLord
Aug 6 2005, 04:27 AM
Yes, she was in Farscape, and now shes in Stargate SG1, nice role, and I think she fits the age, unlike previousley cast people of that period (Sirius, Lupin, that whole bunch)

Elizabeth Hurley - Bellatrix? welll no! dont get me wrong she is nice... but she does not have the dark side the maquivolence required...
We should open a pool of Bella candidates...
I would go for Keira Knightley(well I cant see here being bad to the bone!)

unfortunately the rumour isn't false and elizabeth hurely herself has commentated on being considered as bellatrix. it's totally insane. so many people know elizabeth hurely, it's like putting in hilary duff in as fleur delacour. i hope liz doesn't get in because harry potter is best to stick to people that are less known.

oh, pants, maybe she just wants to play that part, i hope she doesn't really don't like her Grr-ness!
I think i'm going to stick with my hope for Helena Bohan Carter (can't spell it) I thinkshe would mke a fantastic Bella, wouldn't you all agree?
Just incase you don't know what she looks like.

I totally agree with those who don't want Liz to get the role, because I think she just wouldn't fit, ok, she played the devil but she was kinda charming and likable, when Bella is supposed to be absolutlely demonic
But Helena Bonham Carter would be a good choice, for those who haven't seen Merlin (with Sam Neill), go and watch it, she is perfekt for Bellatrix!

isnt liz hurley american? if not then i apologise, but she wouldnt be able to get a part if she is, it kind of goes against the all english cast thing. besides i thik i read somewhere on www.jkrowling.com that the rumours were completly false anyway... i may be getting confused if am then please have pitty on me i dont mean to offend

Now that the Elizabeth Hurley casting rumor has been pretty well debunked, I guess the field is wide open, as far as we know. As for my opinion, my first choices would be either Caterine Zeta Jones (hey, she is
Welsh, right?) or Monica Bellucci. To me, they both have that exquisitely dark beauty, and a knack for playing characters that have that slightly regal, slightly haughty, somewhat sinister, mysterious cat-like aire. While they both might be too 'Hollywood' for HP fan tastes, they do have the looks and acting chops to boot. Even though she is not British, I do believe that Ms. Bellucci would be my first choice because she is a little less 'Hollywood', has done fantasy oriented work before (the
Matrix II & III,
Bram Stoker's Dracula (with
Gary Oldmanas Dracula, no less!),
Brotherhood of the Wolf, and most recently Gilliam's
The Brothers Grimm[she's cast as a wicked witch, no less!]) and has that slightly exotic, European aire (she's Italian) that would be wonderful and quite appropriate for the HP world. Plus, she is an accomplished actress who would probably love to sink her teeth into a role as dark, beguiling, and complex as Bellatrix. She would be absolutely
delicious in the part! (Quick WB, send out the casting agents!) Oooh, I am getting shivers of delight just thinking about it! Not sure? Check out these links for info and pics!:

Bellatrix Lestrange should definitely be played by a dark, brooding beauty.
Halena Bonham Carter would be great in that role. I could see her playing the slightly demented character very well indeed!
Who else?
Kristin Scott Thomas? Anna Friel? Emily Watson? Amanda Donohoe? Tilda Swinton?
All would be good, I think. Liz Hurley or Catherine Zeta Jones are not the right types to play her...
Now, as to Narcissa...
I would love to see Tara Fitzgerald play her!
But that's another topic...
Cheers!

hey, it's called good acting i recon liz would be just fine for the part. just because someone hasn't played a malicious charactor before dosn't mean she can't. i always thought it would be either her or angelina jolie. anyone see lucy lu act an evil charecter before kill bill?
Omerus_Banning
Aug 30 2005, 07:27 PM
I'm not sure if one can refer to what Liz Hurley does as "acting." She certainly does provide eye candy in every one of her movie appearances, but acting isn't her forte!
She couldn't act evil, instead coming off as Bellatrix, the most she could convey would be dominatrix... (Sorry, couldn't resist...) She would be cheesy beyond belief!
You need someone in a role like that who can handle serious roles, who has some depth in her repertoire.
Liz Hurley? I think (hope!) not.
Louise
Aug 31 2005, 06:04 PM
No, I wouldn't worry, Omerus, mate

It's been debunked, thank goodness!
Anywho, from what they were saying on the showbiz news today, Liz is having a bit of a mid life crisis and has described herself as "loopy".
Mmm.
Pretty much confirmed what the rest of the cinema going public has known for years, eh?
Omerus_Banning
Sep 1 2005, 02:41 PM
No kidding! If she were to get cast as anything in an HP movie, I'd half expect Austin Powers to pop by as well... Is it apparent I cannot stand Liz?
For my money, Helena Bonham Carter would be a good choice...
Cheers!
Ygraine
Sep 19 2005, 05:09 PM
I think Catherine Zeta Jones would be good for the part personally. She has that striking beauty about her, and she can act. ever seen Chicago? She can play the bad gal!
Although i think Helena would be the best, but I wouldn't be totally appalled if Catherine Zeta Jones got the part.
Um, i know not the right topic, but Gweneth Paltrow floated into my head for Narcissa, looks wise i don't know why...she can do that 'Holier than thou' stance and look, but then again, Narcissa Malfoy is such a small part, i don't even know if they'll get a well known actress.
tara fitzgerald would be good too, although i've only ever seen her in Brassed Off.

I think Liz would be terrible. I suggest maybe Charlize Theron... I mean after seeing her movie MONSTER, she gave an oscar worthy performance...
For Umbridge, who would be a good actress to play her?

i personally believe that angelina jolie would be perfect for bellatrix. she really has the bad ass attitude that bella needs.i mean bella is someone who's not afraid to be a ruthless killer. i mean yeah voldemort is ruthless but if voldemort were gone and bella were still here i be pretty frightened. and if you've seen the tomb raider movies or mr. and mrs. smith (whitch i haven't seen though i want to) she really has great potential
Padfoot313
Oct 21 2005, 03:28 PM
I must agree with Dana_Scully, I would throw myself out the window. LIZ Hurley is one of if not the worst actress I ever had to watch. She isn't funny, and not at all appealing to me and worthless on screen. I liked Jolie, but I don't think she is evil enough, too advntuous and seductive to be bellatrix. Although they could use that angle to hin that Bellatrix has something for Voldy. Anyway, my favorite choice would be the lady from farscape/stargate. She was ratehr violent and loving it and would look natural in tha role. She gets my vote.
NickHilton
Oct 22 2005, 12:09 PM
No, i don't think much of Liz Hurley as Bellatrix. One Bellatrix is supposed to be an evil killer, and with Liz Hurleys acting talent that may be and...interesting portrayel! Plus Bellatrix as described in Ootp, don't know the exact wording but, is basically pretty ugly, however i wouldn't exactly call Liz Hurley ugly....
HP number one Fan
Nov 10 2005, 07:15 PM
I didnt imagin Bellatrix to be that beautiful. I thought she would be quite ugly. Thats only because I hate her though lol. I wonder if they will actually use he for Bellatrix? It would be a shame.
SennaWells
Nov 10 2005, 07:45 PM
I don't mind the idea of a rather beautiful Bellatrix Lestrange, but I think she'd be more of a washed-out beauty, someone that would have suffered in their life and aged a bit. She'd still have the look of a beautiful woman but would also convey a look that would suggest she was even more beautiful when she was younger and less troubled. I think Hurley would actually be a bit too much of a bombshell to play the role, if it had been true, simply because she is still rather beautiful even though she's getting into her 40s.
It'd be nice if they went with someone with a smaller name. I can't really think of anyone off the top of my head, but I kind of like it when they bring in someone who's a bit less known to play a good role. Thewlis (Remus Lupin) wasn't someone I had heard of before "Prisoner" and he turned out quite nicely.
Sofie
Nov 12 2005, 01:17 PM
I think that this "Liz Hurley for Bellatrix" is just a rumor. WB cant consider her...i mean, i dont even think she can be called an actress. After Austin Powers....
Im thinking about
Anna Chancellor or Helena Bonham-Carter. Both are excellent actresses and can play deeply evil characters. Plus, they are really pretty as well and aftrer all, Bella is beautiful, too. Or at least i allways imagined her being beautiful.
Personally, id more than happy if Yates casted Anna Chancellor.
HarrysBigToe
Nov 23 2005, 08:18 PM
i'd like to see angelina jolie in the role, its how i imagined bellatrix to look. if you saw her in the movie 'gina' (99% sure that was the title) you'll know what i mean. she has that moodiness about her and i think she would play the role perfectly.
