Hi all!

I asked the MODs, and I got permission to open up a thread for all the lovers of horror out there, and the day before Halloween. Yay!

So, feel free to discuss your favourite horror books, films, TV shows, anything horror related really.

To start off, I'll just say a little bit about the kind horror I like.

Alan Gibbons is one of my favourite horror writers of all time. I just love the way he sets the scene and gives you chills just with the anticipation of something happening. His work gives me goosebumps all over.

As for film, I don't really have a preference. Anything gruesome is good wink.gif .

TV shows is where I need YOU. I don't watch much TV, so I need you guys to recommend shows etc.

If you want, you could write a review of your favourite horror book/movie/show and explain why you love it, that would be a good way to get discussion flowing.

Looking forward to hearing from you, seeing what kind of things you like!

Good topic! Halloween is my favorite time of year because of all the spooky books and movies.
I'm not too into tv either, but a good "scary" show I always make time for is Ghost Hunters. It's on the SciFi channel every wednesday night. I've been watching it for a few years now so it doesn't really scare me anymore, but it can get pretty freaky if you've never watched it. And there are some new episodes every once in a while that will creep me out. It's hard to watch it by yourself. Thankfully I've got my mom and sister hooked on it happy.gif

My absolute favorite horror writer is Richard Matheson, who wrote I Am Legend. I especially love his short stories. I'd definately recommend him to anyone. Thought his book Hell House may not be for the youngsters wink.gif It's more raunchy than scary, in my opinion. Still a good read though.

I'm extremely picky when it comes to horror movies. The ones coming out these days are not horror, in my opinion. They're torture p.orn (I don't know why that word is edited, it's not a bad word lol). Those movies like Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hostel, etc. Nope. Doesn't do it for me.
I'm a fan of the old horror films. The Exorcist, House on Haunted Hill (the one with Vincent Price), Nosferatu (1922 and 1979 version), The Last Man on Earth (another Vincent Price), and even Dracula with Bela Lugosi (the best Dracula). I do enjoy the new House on Haunted Hill, mainly because it has my favorite actor, Geoffrey Rush, but it is genuinely frightening. I just don't watch the last 20-30 minutes of it. The ending sucks big time.

I don't think I've ever heard of Alan Gibbons. What does he write? Anything I may have heard of?

You may or may not have heard of Alan Gibbons. My absolute favourite book by him is a dead heat between 'Scared to Death' and 'The Demon's Assassin', both in the Hell's Underground series. Ring any bells? There's a link to his site here, which has got some really good info on some of his best books. You could see if there's any you recognise.

I think I've heard of Ghost Hunters... I'll definitely try and check it out.

I LOVE I Am Legend! And The Exorcist and Dracula are really good. Bela Lugosi really was amazing wasn't he.

Thanks for sharing your faves with me. I'll take a look at some of them, they look really good. If you've got time, I'd see if you could find a copy of Scared to Death. It's really chilling!

P.S. Have you ever seen Ghost Rider with Nicolas Cage?

I'll definately check out that book. I'm always up for a good scary story. Is it an adult book or like a young adult book?

Ghost Hunters is really addicting. Just warning you lol. Like I said, I don't watch much tv, and that's because I just don't like it. I don't like anything that's on and I'm just not the type of person who can sit for hours on my butt watching any show. This one is different. Like tonight, there's a live 7 hour investigation for Halloween and I'll be watching all 7 hours! Plus I've been watching that marathon of it that's been on all day lol.

I've never seen Ghost Rider. I used to like Nicolas Cage a lot, but I don't anymore and that movie didn't really look like my cup of tea. I've heard different things about it. Some say it's really good and some say it's really bad. I may just have to watch it for myself and see how I feel about it happy.gif

Oh my gosh, I just realized a movie I forgot to add to my list. The Shining, with Jack Nicholson! That movie is awesome, and Jack just blows me away. I wish I could have been in that movie with him.

I can see why people would say Ghost Rider is bad, but I enjoyed it myself.

Scared to Death is kind of half children half adult book. I read it and loved it, and my mum and dad loved it too. The older you are, the less scary it becomes, and the more you kind of marvel at the clever plot line. It's kind of a marmite book. You either love it or hate it.

Ok, I'm going to try and get some discussion flowing.

Write a newpaper style review of a horror film you saw recently. Give it a star-rating and say what was good and bad about it.

Have fun!
