Which do you like:
American Football?
Soccer (football)?
or Austrailia Football?

Feb 27 2005, 03:59 PM
i like soccer/football
i cannot understand anything about american football. all i get from it is that there is a ball and then a guy throws it while some other guys try to knock eachother down and then they run?
oh, and sometimes they kick it.
i just don't see the point of american football.
and to be honest, i don't know what austrailian football is,

I will never understand the point behind American football. My mate plays it, and still I have no interest.
Real football is over hyped for what it is. But I rank it higher than American football.
Never heard of Australian football.
Tell you a better game to play: Rugby
Similar to American football, just no pads and none of that stopping and back tracking rubbish.

I have to like American football better, don't I? I'm from America! I don't like football/soccer as much, but it's still fun. I've never played rugby but I hear it is very fun as well. BTW, what is Australia football?

By Australian football do you mean Australian rules (football)?
If so its very similar to Gaelic Football here in Ireland (which by the way is also known as football

It all gets very confusing with all these different sports being known by the same name).
Any way as i was saying Gaelic and Australian rules are pretty much the same (apart from a few alterations to the rules), in fact a kinda all star team from the 32 Irish Gaelic teams goes over to play the best of the Australian teams and vica-verca, in a two match tournament.
The just of Gaelic, is as follows,
15 players to a team
The nets are a H shape and you get 3 points for scoring a 'goal' in the bottom section and a point for hitting it between the top two posts. the field is a good bit bigger than a football (soccer) pitch, (mainly wider) and there are two umpires at either side of the posts who call the points.
The ball is Spherical
You are allowed to handle, and kick the ball but you can only take four paces (with the ball with out bouncing the ball, or ‘toe tapping’ the ball (letting the ball drop to your feet and kicking it back up to your hand).
And finally it’s basically a full contact sport although you cant hit an opposition player or anything, you can block them, or try to get the ball off them when it’s in their hand and so on.
The main differences between Aussie rules and Gaelic are as follows:
you get two points for getting the ball over top part of the 'H' part of the nets.
There are two post either side of the H posts Kind of like this; I H I and you get a point for hitting it between the I and the H (either side)
Once a player kicks the ball forward and another player successfully catches the ball (with out it touching the ground) play momentarily stops and nobody is aloud to tackle said player, until the ball is passed forward.
And the ball is shaped like a rugby or American Football.
I personally am not too found of Aussie rules football, but I’d watch the mach between Australia and Ireland if it was on. I’m a (I suppose) lapse Aston Villa supporter, I use to be really into the premiership when I was in school but to be honest I wouldn’t be too interested in how they where doing at the moment. However I absolutely love International football (soccer) and would always try to watch the Irish Internationals whenever I can.
American football is a bit to ‘broken up’ for my liking (it appears to bad all about plays) and to be honest (not to offend any on or any thing) it looks like a poorer version of rugby. Although this is probably a rash judgement of American football, as to be honest I haven’t seen enough it to be critical about it.

Thanks Souljacker for explaining Austrailian Rules Football.
I live in the US and the only time I saw the game was on TV.
It was so cool! I wanted to learn more leading to this topic.
I prefer American Football to Soccer/football, specifically the Terps (Maryland Terrapins).
The National Football League has too much commercialism.

I love American football. Between the NFL and HP i basically have no life. All my guy friends think it's great that i know just as much football as them. We used to play almost every week, rain or shine. Tackle football, no pads. Other guys who didnt know me used to totally underestimate me so i'd score all the time.
I think alot of other courties think American football is silly. With all their pads and other reasons. It's actually alot harder than it looks. Especially for the Quarterback, Receivers, the backs, and the secondary defense. They have to remeber all these routes and plays. But don't get me wrong either, the line works hard to. the have to know when to pass block, run block, they need to open the running route, and the perfect tie to release. you try trying to stop a 250 lb. man from getting past you, quite a task...
I played soccer my whole life though so i have alot of respect for that too. I just wish i was a boy sometimes and could play football...

Hmm... I guessing that had you lot grown up with Aussie Rules like I have, you'd change your answers here quick smart!!
Aussie rule, well... RULES!!
It's the greatest sport ever and the only one I follow with any real regularity. It is similar to what Shane said, (and it's nice to know he knows a bit about it

) but a bit different:
* It is played with a similar shaped ball to rugby.
* The goals are like this i I I i rather than an H though
* You get six points for scoring a goal (between the middle posts and 1 point for hitting a post or going either side of the middle two.
* You can tackle your opponents (not above the shoulder, that is called 'high tackle' and you get a penalty and the other team gets the ball.
* If you 'mark' a ball (that means catch it without it having hit the ground after an opponent kicks it) you can either 'play on' or you can stop and chose where you want to put the ball next.
* You cant run with the ball for more than three steps before bouncing it (which takes loads of skill when you consider the shape it is)
and there's loads more, but you get the picture.
It's a
very physical sport so the guys out there have to be extremely fit and not afraid of physical contact. Loads of injuries every year, in fact they've recently introduced the 'blood rule' where if a player is bleeding profusely (happens way more than you would think) then they have to leave the ground to be patched up before they are allowed back on to play.
The Aussie Rules players are warriors! They have guts and stamina beyond any needed to play either Soccer or Grid Iron(?)
I feel a bit sorry for people who haven't had the opportunity to see a game and I highly recommend when one comes up that you do! Americans are starting to play Aussie Rules so if you look it up on the net you'd probably find out where you could catch a match.
Oh and btw COLLINGWOOD ROCK!!

(even though they're not doing too well at the moment

lol

American Football. I have seen games of Australian football on TV, and I have a friend who lives over in Ireland so I also know of Gaelic football, although he just shortened it and would just call it "Gaelic". Soccer is good too, but I just prefer American Football. I used to play it until I developed Juvenile Rhematoid Arthritis(JRA), and I watch it a lot. Am I the only one who gets extremely annoyed when people complain about American football all the time? If you don't live in America, then you don't have a fair chance to see what it really is so don't complain about something you don't know enough about. I seriously know some people who live in Europe who constantly complain about it by saying "You don't even use your feet very much", well it's just a name, you should have better things to talk about.

Lol apologies Razz! (and all other Aussies out there!

I completely forgot about there being no cross bar hmm and the points In my defence though Ireland play Australia in Aussie rules but twice a year and I must of watched the last two down the pub, from my memory of the points system and invisible cross bars

Maybe they alter the rules for the tournament? Or it probably was the pub
I’m surprised it's taken this long for some one to correct me though!

we must be low on Aussie members!

Physical? What about all that stopping you's do? (only found out today it's called marking) It reminds me of netball, you wouldn't get that in Gaelic!

On joking there btw, from the little I've seen it's an extremely demanding game, how they manage to bounce that ball (or kick it) and avoid getting clobbered is beyond me. I have to agree it really is a great game to watch it requires loads of skill and accuracy, as well being very physical and requiring superhuman stamina it’s extremely technical.
I know this thread is only asking about the three game's but since this seems to be the thread for ball sports has any one ever seen a Hurly match? There is the exact same rules as Gaelic (see my last post) but instead of being played with a football they use a bat called hurly and a cricket sized ball. It's the fastest ball sport in the world and is near impossible to play (or at least from my experience

) It's also very dangerous as run the risk of being hit over the head with a hurly as you can't carry the ball on the bat which has a wide flat base) more than five steps with out bouncing it ,also people use their hurly to get the ball back (so generally there’s loads of hurlys flying about the place).

Also getting hit with a ball is no joke as its about as hard as a cricket bat and when its whacked by a hurly it travels at some speed, but anyway, consider that just an aside.

Back to the topic at hand, sorry Razz but it still has to be football or its less popular name, soccer. There's an Ireland game tonight and international football, remains the only sport I have any interest is following these days, mainly because of happy memories from Italia 90 incidentally where we beat Italy (the team were playing tonight) 1:0 in the group stages, (Hope its a good omen!

) Where we reached the quarter finals (Thanks to an outstanding save from Packie Bonner) of the world cup and then got knocked out by Italy in the semis 1:0.

memories!

Honestly, American Football should be re-named to...tackleball? Because they rarely kick it at all. I am from Canada but my dad is from Britan so i have grown up to call soccer football and cheer on some teams in the Premier League...Go Liverpool! I also play soccer, though very violent so i had to learn to knee the girls in the back of the knee when the ref isnt looking. Though not proud of it...thats soccer for yea.

agreed Puffskein, but only because im english and my family are huge football supporters. They have supported Arsenal since my great grandad worked for the company that gave the club its name so I think i have to put tht at the top of my list! That said i love a bit of american football, stay up every year just to watch to superbowl and probowl, There's nothing like a 3 hour game!

plus i unofficially follow the phillidelphia eagles. Never actually seen a game of aussie rules, but heard many things about its violence levels, and no matter how much a football fan i am i dont deny football players are a bunch of wimps, falling over, often because it looks like they've been tackled. It's so pathetic its hilarious, kudos to anyone who plays rugby/aussie rules. i couldnt handle it!

to tell the truth, i think it's sad how so many people, all over the world are obsessed with any sport. i have to say though, soccer is a little less barrbaric then football, though just a dumb(in my opinion). basicly a bunch of guys trying to kick a ball into a net, while a bunch of other guys try to give them bloody shins, vs. a guy trying to carry a ball over a line several hundred of yards away while a bunch of other guys try to jump on top of him. i think i've read somewhere that the reason men like sports so much has to do with primal instincts, and like making up for not being able to go out and spear a caribu anymore, or something.
to tell the truth, it seems reeeally weird to me that so many people love soccer so much, that's probably becauause i live in the US, and over here it's like an after school activity for little kids.
i've never heard of austrailian soccer. i though they just had the same one.

Sports are something to do avrilluver. If I didn't play or watch sports I would be bored out of my mind during the summer.
As for which form of football I like most, it's a tie between soccer and American football. Both are very entertaining and fun, except I live in the states where American football is a lot bigger that soccer. The only problem is my local team is the Redskins (they suck bad) and I usually have nothing to cheer for

At my school, the football players and soccer players argue about what sport is much more rougher. I think that American football has more contact because thats the whole point to the game. That doesn't mean that soccer doesn't have any contact. I used to play soccer and you have to be in perfect shape. Its a hard sport. Now that I play football, I'd have to say that I'm a fan of that. When soccer is on ESPN, I usually watch it but thats it. It is very entertaing though.

Like I’ve said in my above post the only football which in any way interests me theses days is the international kind. And since this week has consisted of quite a bit of international posts I thought I’d post on my reactions the fairs of my team the Republic of Ireland against France.
Sadly we where beaten 1:0 which was absolutely devastating as we can no longer qualify directly for the world cup but so long as we beat Cyprus and Switzerland in our next two games were still in with a shout of play off place which would be brilliant.
On a much brighter note the other Ireland (Northern) managed a historic defeat of England, (as well as defeating Azerbaijan earlier in the week).
This recent run of play ended a four year long person of Northern Ireland not winning a game and an 11 game run with out scoring a goal (which was depressing to say the least). But to come out of that and manage to beat a team 107 places above you in the FIFA world rankings is wonderful!!
The Republic will always be my team, but still I’m ecstatic for Northern Ireland who seem to have finally broke an extremely devastating run of play where we were to be honest the wiping boys of the British sides, (like the Italy of the six nations cup in Rugby if you will). It’s just a really great feeling, just to be in the country at a time when something like this happens

role on Euro 2010! (for N.Ireland of course) We (the Republic) still have a chance at world cup glory!

*Hehe*

with relation to the topic at hand I'm just trying illustrate how emotive international football can make people, why so many people can love it so much. Although sometimes sadly with dire consequences when people take it too far.

| Aussie rule, well... RULES!! |
AHA- Go Razz! Aussie Rules is the ultimate sport in the entire world. I apologize for bringing this topic back to life, but those who know me know I cant help but add my opinion.
I am a firm West Coast fan, and know for a fact from my well connected Chiropractor that Ben Cousins had drugs on him that night he ran (which is what I would have done, to those who dont know, long story), and I stand with firm belief that I really dont care what he does off the field, it is none of anyone's business, he is a good player and that is all I care about! He should stay captain because many before him have made mistakes (my sister actually having witnessed Matthew Pavlich doing drugs in a club- he is a Fremantle Dockers player). Not to mention...others....who will remain unidentified....
Anyway, Razz, Collingwood? I do not have a real grudge against the players, but their coach left our team all those years ago as almost unfit to play with most either ready to retire or untrained rookies. I will forever hold a grudge against Malthouse!
Anyways, congrats on last year.... second from the wooden spoon!
hehe...best game in the world... best game...
Oh, by the way, I am currently stuck at home sick with Glandular Fever and the first game of the season is tonight!!!! West Coast vs. St. Kilda and I HAD TICKETS!!!!!! AHHH...I was nearly crying this morning when my Mum told me I had no chance of going.... My entire weekend is ruined!!!

Have to agree, Aussie rules is pretty weel the toughest form out there. The blood rule addition was a good thing: I've seen some pretty scary games prior to it!
Rugby is, however, my favourite. As we don't really have any big rugby coverage in Canada, I'm an avid All Black fan. HAven't had much luck finding people to play with here, however, but the search goes on...

because a) its the only one that you actually kick the ball for most of the game

there's no such thing as an American or Aussie Rules World Cup is there, so thats testimony that its the biggest game in the world.

That game was a huge discrace to England. Come on, Northen Ierland is ranked about 130th in the world to Englands 6th, not that the world rankings are very accurate though.
Football football is the only decent sport of the 3 'footballs' you suggested. Amercian Football, involves a 3 1/2 hour game where players move the ball 10 yards and everyone does a doggypile. Also the play is stopped about every 20 seconds or less, how can you get the flow of the game going in 20 seconds? Aussi Rules borderlines on o.k. It has the same principals as Amarcian football without the many stops, so it is a bit beter.
Football football is the most popular sport in the world, and for a reason. The FIFA World Cup of the world's 32 best teams has higher ratings that the Olympics! Football football is popular because it is continus play and it doesn't have that full contact that was described earlier. It is easy to get the flow in the game and it doesn't have confusing and large point systems. One point if you kick the ball in the net. The Amercian football and Aussi Rules football have wierd point systems. Anyway football football is
the sport!

There are two types of Australian Football. The Australian Football League (AFL) and the National Rugby League (NRL).
The NRL is what my family follows as it's more precise then AFL which seems really disorganised in my opinion. I'm not an expert on NRL so I won't give a run down on how it's payed and with how many members.
My family normally follows the Penrith Panthers during the year and the Blues at State of Origin time. NRL is so much rougher then AFL or American football, Gridiron isn't it called? Or am I thinking something different?
We don't wear padding. Our men are real men!!! Lol, yeah so packed full of painkillers that they can play with a broken leg and not notice it! Ok so that's a lie, but they are pretty tough! Shame they get really mangled in later life after paying for so many years. All their faces end up a mushed mess, not pretty.
We had an American teacher come to my high school when I was in grade 8 and he made us learn Gridiron. I was like 'No way man, I hate sport!' Needless to say I didn't get a good grade. They made us learn Touch as well, I didn't play, the guys seemed to forget the touch rule and tackled everyone. I walked off the field in protest.

My favorite is soccer/football. I still remember two great days of FIFA world cup. When we (the US) tied Italy, and when Italy won. When italy won people drove around honking their car horns. It was great lol!

My brother and I had little popper things and we used them.
When we were in Mexico they had really cheap soccer jerseys.
I also like American football. My mom and I watch it Sunday afternoons. I like the Eagles, Cowboys, and Colts.I wanted to go to South Africa for World Cup in 2010 but the answer was no.
In Beijing they are already getting ready for the Olympics.
I never saw rugby or Australian football but when I was little my cousin's girlfriend played rugby.

American football is the best. after all, it is THE most popular sport in the US. Thee rules are soooooo much better than soccer-- 6 points for a touchdown ( caught or run into the last ten yards of the field) then one point for the extra kick or 2 for an exra touchdown ( the ball is placed on the two yard line after a touchdown) 3 points for a field goal ( kicking the ball off of the ground or a drop kick through the upper portion of an H shaped goal) and two for a safety ( tackling a player of the other team in his endzone) then there all all of the penaties ( five ten or 15 yards) the positions (e.g. Quaterback, halfback, center, gaurd, linebacker, etc.) the turnovers, ( interception or fumble) punting and the 4 downs-- it is so much more complicated than soccer which makes it so much more fun to watch

Okay...curious
Picture this. I live in Australia. I've been to AFL footy games plenty of times and most of the time half the people are pretty drunk. Now, the scoring of the games goes like this:
These are the goals:
. I I
I I I I
Through the middle= 6 points or a goal.
If the ball hits any post, goes through the two sides or is touched by a player before it goes through= 1 point or a behind ( I suppose its just typical Australia to give consolation even if you miss the goal ).
That's simple as, and most people have trouble with that. It can be quite uncomfortable to be sitting in a crowd while people are off their nut yelling that the decision is wrong. Would you say that the intricate complications make it more fun to watch? It seems to make it more difficult to watch. I've attempted to watch American Footy on SBS and I just dont get it. Do you have people complaining about umpire decisions when the rules are so many and....dare I say it....pointless?
I have nothing against Soccer. I prefer AFL, but I sat down and watched all the Socceroo games in the World Cup to be supportive of my country. I'm sorry if I offended you, but I needed to announce my rebuttal. I come from Australia mate. Everything needs to be simple, laid out, and easy to understand even when you are drinking. I just lose interest otherwise. Anyway, just my thoughts. You gave your opinion and now I have given mine.

I'm Australian, but I'm not a big fan of Australian Football. I just find it a bit too...all over the place...if you get what i mean. I don't really know all that much about it, so i just see a whole bunch of guys running around. Maybe if i got to know about it a bit more, Id grow to like it, but I've been over football for a while now. I've never even watched American Football
But I DO love soccer a lot. I don't have Foxtel, which sucks, so i have to watch a program on SBS every sunday afternoon to hear the results. But its odd coz i dont like Australian Soccer - I tend to watch European soccer. People think Im weird coz i dont even follow a team from my own country, but thats just the way I am...i prefer overseas teams like AC Milan and Brazil...

Aussie rules is the best kind of football

And
thesolitaryone, I think you made it sound more confusing that it is

There are four posts in a line, two really tall ones in the middle and two smaller ones next to them. So yes, it looks like this:
i I I i
If you kick it through the two big ones in the middle, it's a goal. So you get six points. If you kick it between a big one and a small one it is a behind, so you get one point. If you kick the ball into either of the tall posts you get a point (unless it's during the preseason but I won't go into that). If you kick it into either of the small posts, it is counted as out of bounds on the full, so you get no score and the other team gets posession of the ball on the boundary line by the post.
I agree that it's really easy to understand, and so is the rest of the game, but so many people find it impossible to understand and are continually asking questions or just ignoring the game completely.
And it's a huge part of the game to disagree with the Umpire's decisions!!! You've gotta have some team spirit!! I sigh along with everyone when we miss a goal, and groan when the opposition kicks one, and boo when the umpire makes a stupid decision, and yes, the often make incorrect decisions, even when they do benefit my team

And sure, people get drunk, but I've never had any bad experiences at the football (except when we lose) and the drunks generally don't sit where I do, so I don't come in much contact with them.
I have alot of experience with footy games, as most Aussie's should; I got to an average of 8 or 9 games a year, and I would prefer to go to many more but it takes so long to get to Melbourne from here that I can't be bothered.
Anyway, AFL is the best game in the world.

Don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against americans/australians etc. but being English kinda makes you want to kick any person who calls football "soccer"
That's probably why england has such a bad reputation for being hooligans, but honestly, it's a minority. I don't even follow football but i know all the stuff you hear about chavs getting arrested in other countries has absolutely nothing to do with the game, they are very ignorant, immature people who use football as an excuse to punch people. It's really sad because football should be fun and exciting, but instead all you hear about is the bad stuff going on.

Proper English Football. Americans or Australians actually have no right to call their "football" what it is, English Football was invented first so therefore, American Football should be called Soccer and seeing as Australian Football is like the Irish sport, Gaelic Football, should be called something else, as should Gaelic Football. In other words, if it has Football in the name it has no right to be called so unless it is English Football exactly.

But can't just change all the names of all the other sports just because it has 'football' in it. Or its called soccer. Here in The U.S. we do things differently, we speak differently, and have different accents, and also have different words. Are you gonna make us change our language English into something else, just because its the same name? Everthing changes overtime, why not names of sports? Here its soccer, in Europe it football, who cares what its called?

Well I do, Football was created by the English before anyone else invented anything with the word Football in it, just because you live somewhere else doesn't mean you can name a different sport with it

Well Indonesians call football Sepak Bola; are you gonna condemn them? It's not our fault our languages are different. Just because we speak English does not mean all of our words will be the same, especially when Soccer is an English sport, not an American or an Australian sport. We have our own games that involve kicking a ball with your foot and we have every right to call them football. Names change over time especially in differrent countries with different languages. Are you gonna be all annoyed that americans don't call tousers trousers? It's a language difference, and we aren't telling you to call it soccer, so I think you should just deal with it.
Besides, in Australia at least, we have several types of football; Aussie rules, NFL, NRL, and we call all of them football. There is no naming rights.

Personally, my favourite is football/Soccer. I've played it since I was a little kid, being from England, it's very popular for most guys and a lot of girls to.
As for the names, A lot of different countries have football. It's no big deal. Most European countries call football (soccer) football, whereas the United States and Canada would usually call it Soccer.
Some countries are in between. For example, in Ireland, Football can refer to either soccer or Gaelic (Irish) Football, depending on who you are talking to. The same goes for Australia, were football can be either Aussie Rules or Soccer.
Then there's International Rules Football (a mixture of Australian and Irish Football) and Rugby, which is officially called Rugby Football!

My favorite is soccer/football, and american football. My freshman team had a game to day, and we lost 2-1. It was our first game, and it was a tough team.

Not really... no one here calls soccer football. It's just soccer

AFL and NFL are our two footballs, but AFL is more popular down south in Victoria, whereas in New South Wales NFL is much more popular. Soccer is pretty popular everywhere, but people tend to enjoy playing it more than they enjoy watching it. There aren't many soccer games on TV, and they're usually on SBS.

Precisely. There is more than 'one type' of football played in Australia.
My dad being from Scotland, and my mum from England have instilled in me a respect for "Soccer" - UK and international, though I don't often get the time to follow it. When I do, Manchester United is the team I opt for unless its a world cup. Then I usually pick whichever team I'd rather win over the other at the time. (Generally because my loyalties in said sport are fairly solvent and I don't know what the heck is going on most of the time.)
But I stand by what I said originally.
Aussie rules is a particularly physical sport that requires dedication physically *and* mentally. It is a gruelling and intoxicating game for players and supporters alike. There are few sports that could claim the same.
I'm not biased in any way of course.

Neither. There are only (in my opinion) two sports worth following. Gaelic Football and Hurling! (In case you didnt know what they are, they are two Irish sports. Gaelic football is LIKE soccer but uses hands. Hurling (the better of the two in my opinion) is the fastest paced sport in the world. It is played with a ball the size of a tennis ball only its made of leather and is heavier, and so more dangerous. Hurlers use ash sticks, like field hockey sticks, only with a larger flatter surface at the end.)

Soccer rules!!
I just dont understand the motive behind Am. football and the I feel it odd. Well, soccer is a cool game. I play soccer but I'm not on the team. I think it is a game of team spirit. It is cool.
I suppose someone starts a thread on Soccer itself.
GO GERMANY!
GO MANCHESTER UNITED!
