I thought
Airplane was very funny, I've seen it countless times and it's never boring.
I thought
Mel Brooks deserves a special mention. He has very funny ideas that come out wonderfully in some of his films. For instance
Blazing Saddles that you just have to love for its tongue-in-cheek zany humour, and
Young Frankenstein which is a very clever spoof of the original version of Frankenstein with Boris Karloff,
High Anxiety which has very funny remakes of well-known scenes of Alfred Hitchkock films and even manages to have a good story...
The Greatest Lover is a parody on Rudolf Valentino that is hilarious in places, and
Spaceballs just makes me laugh
thinking about it. Yeah, a world is without Mel Brooks is definitely a less funny place.
Galaxy Quest is not just wonderful because it has Alan Rickman in it (along with a surprisingly booby Sigourney Weaver and an absolutely fantastic Tim Allan), but also because it is very funny and it cleverly sends up the Star Trek phenomenon without becoming cheesy. It's even funnier when you throw in the documentary with the actors as the characters that play the characters.
A funny Golden Oldie I enjoyed very much is a film called
A funny thing happened on the way to the Forum wish I could see that one again, all the characters are brilliant, even if it doesn't have Frankie Howerd, who shone in the British version. You can see Frankie Howerd in another bawdy Roman farce called
Up Pompei (a BBC TV comedy series, not a film).
More modern fun was
Weekend at Bernie's: even if the single joke is a bit drawn out, it stays funny because of the pace and pretty good acting. My jaw muscles were aching from having laughed so much, so that's a pretty good indicator that this film deserves a mention.
A Fish called Wanda was pretty good, and clever too. Kevin Kline was hilarious as Otto, the rest of the cast was fantastic, some of Wendy's the lines are priceless:
"Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is not "every man for himself", and the London Underground is not a political movement. Those are all mistakes, Otto. I looked them up." ...
There must be others I haven't thought of. Many others. When I think of them, I may post again.
[EDIT] : T totally forgot
The Plank -- it's wordless and a classic! See
IMDB - The Plank for details, and another classic called
Dinner for One which stars the indomitable Freddy Frinton as James "Same procedure as last year?" and May Warden "Same procedure as every year, James". If you've never seen this and can find it, you're in for a treat! This is such an all-time classic that it's a big favourite on German TV, that repeated it every year for many years.
