Also, Goblet of Fire Director Mike Newell said that he tried to remain "as faithful as possible" to the book: "Some were surely surprised that I was chosen for directing this film! I promise you I have not destroyed the book, and we are as faithful as possible to the book. We want to thrill the Harry Potter fans, and we took extreme measures for that! I want to be sure to have the good emotion and the good atmosphere which will transfer all the aspects of the story on screen." |
I'm getting really excited after reading that!!
I trust Mike Newell. I believe he's going to paint a very different HP world from what we've seen thus far from Columbus and Cuaron, and this couldn't have come at a better time what with how different GoF is from the first 3 books.
So chill out guys, I reckon it'll turn out alright. Newell said they've been as faithful to the book as they possibly can and that's all they *can* do really.
Look at the bigger picture and that is we've a new HP film to look forward to at the end of the year...

Hear, hear!! I'm all proGoF too, Ash!

I mean, from all the updates I've heard so far, with the three tasks and the investment towards creating the 'goblet of fire' effect... I can really see that we're looking towards a good HP movie here...
Okay, so, there's no Dursley's in that one... well, I say, better cut out the Dursley's than Sirius!! I mean, you have to know your priorities in this, y'know... we can't possibly insert *everything* from the book now...
Can't wait for November!! In the meantime, I'll stay firm as a HP fan and believe that GoF will *please* their fans...

I'm still pretty amazed that WB seem to be completely fine with producing seven films around just one topic source.
How often do you get film and book versions of a theme both being fantastic in their own right. Let alone seven parts to them.
The fourth film is slowly but surely becoming more and more impressive as pictures and insider info is released. And with the added note that the trio seem to want to stay on for at least #5 I can't wait for the future.
Bring out the dragons!

At the beginning, when we started to have all this hype about the fourth movie, I had really little faith in it. I heard about so many cuts from the film, then I heard it was going to be violent, and then questioning about the rating, and all of these other things.
I'm still, sadly to say, a still bit skeptical about the movie. Yes, Newell is sticking directly to the book, but it still can be choppy with all of the cuts.
But with the date drawing closer, the snapshots of the scenes/certain shots/characters/animals...I'll get less skeptical about it. It really does sound exciting, and this is the book with the most action (along with the fifth one) out of the series.
8 months away!

i agree with you guys... the 4th movie will PLEASE FANS...well probably most fans... people who have no faith in the movie... don't understand that there is no way that you can exactly copy the book into the movie.... i know people say i don't care if it's 10 hours long... but if it was 10 hours long... i don't think you would like the movie very much...
every movie has some cuts and when i go back to the deleted scenes... i understand why they had to cut out some parts... i love movies and i don't care how bad GoF is ... i'm still going to watch it, buy the dvd. and watch it 50 times
i think the cuts he has made so far are reasonable and aren't "needed" in the movie... although i want it to be true to the book.. i also want some differences because than there would be no point in seeing the movie if you could read the same exact script in the book

I heard GoF was only going to be two hours, though. That's the one thing that concerns me. It's a long book with a lot of information, and I just hope all the necessary information goes into the movie.
Darren
Mar 12 2005, 01:54 AM
To pull off a two and a half hour film is very hard. I was watching man on fire the other day, and the first half was exhausting to watch, but the second half was fantastic.
My point being they've grabbed the best bits, sped them up and thrown them into a film time amount that is pleasing for those not so interested and those over egarly interested.
PS was very lucky that everyone was in awe of the setting and the story that most people didn't mind that it was soo long. But I'm sure we are all glad it was.

Spot-on guys, totally agreed. Some people are quick to judge and make negative comments but if you really think about it, compressing a book of GoF's length into a 2 1/2 hour movie is no easy feat. I believe that the film crew selected for any movie are not only experts in their field, but also in the distributor's (ie WB for HP) eyes, the best team for the job. So yeah, some fans need to have a little more faith, I reckon.
At the end of the day, like hermione_rocks said, we all love HP and will go and watch it anyways.

I've always said that we should be thankful that we have a "visual version" to feast our eyes upon. It's not an easy task, putting HP to the big screen, especially since it is of such a high caliber in the world of books.

Yeah exactly!! I remember JKR saying something like that in the PoA DVD interview. Something along the lines of, "that's what the movies are all about, to be able to catch something different, something that's not in the books" (she was referring to the shrunken heads). Also in the DVD, Steve Kloves mentions that JKR wants them to be faithful to the books, BUT she also understands that books and film are two totally different mediums.
Books can go into all the detail in the world whereas film is restricted to time and budget constraints among many other things. To me, what's important is the movies reflect the SPIRIT of the books. I remember Cuaron mentioning that how he approached directing PoA was he picked a central theme and selected scenes from the book that related to that...everything else, too bad, it had to go.
And that's the right way to go about it, I reckon...there's no other way especially in terms of having to deal with the time constraint factor. I also think that as the director, Newell has that right to put his personal stamp on the movie. Coz at the end of the day, he (or any other director for that matter) will never be able to please every single HP fan in the world. So all he CAN do is show the book's events through his eyes.
Everything has to go through JKR before making the final cut. In saying that, whatever we see in the end has met JKR's approval. If it's fine by her, I don't see why we should be making any fuss about it. As long as it doesn't contradict the universe she has created, if the director chooses to make a few tweaks and edits here and there, I think it's all good.

Did you know, that I just can't wait to see Harry having one of the unforgivables used against him (Imperio was it). I dunno why, but ever time I think of the book, that is the one scene that really sticks in my mind. Maybe it's Ron skipping or Neville doing gymnastics that makes me like it
hermione_rocks
Mar 21 2005, 12:14 AM
yea, i think that was a great scene... i wonder how they're going to do it all...
and thanks ashleigh07... you rock, too! even though we've heard that the book is going to be around 2 hours- 2/12 hours.. it doesn't mean it's true.. to tell you the truth, most movies are under 2 hours, so even if we think that GoF is going to be short...compared to most movies it's long..
i've signed a petition called Save GoF... but now that i think about it... i don't think it's actually going to happen.. 4 hours might seem perfect for the film, but if it's drawn out to such a long time period, it's going to be boring and most of it is going to be dialouge which we can just read in the book
so accept the fact that GoF is going to be short... anyways if it's four hours long it will take until at least the end of next year to make... and that means that dan, emma, and rupert might not be in the fifth film if it takes that long to make the fourth movie... which one would you like... a good, short movie with the trio or a long, following the book, with new actors...
if fans aren't pleased with the movie... who will?

Mar 22 2005, 08:24 PM
I agree that GOF is going to make a great movie, and I'm excited about what a new director will bring to the project. I think GOF, of all the book released thus far, had the most potential to be grade A movie material from the get-go. Even if they hadn't made any other HP movies, GOF would've been able to stand alone (with a bit more editing, mind you.) I'm very very excited about it.
ashleigh07
Mar 28 2005, 08:49 AM
That's the spirit - you go, jurassicfatt!!

If only there are more open-minded people like us out there eh?!

I totally agree with hermione_rocks, if us fans are not gonna be supportive of the movies, who will??
What I find really ironic is people rant and complain about the movies (especially PoA *sigh*

) but at the end of the day, when the DVD released, they all went and bought it!!

Which actually made things even worse coz they sat down and watched it from their homes, came up with new things to complain about that Cuaron did wrong

and posted them all here!!
Honestly as I've said about a hundred times now, whichever director takes on a HP movie he/she will never be able to please every single fan on this earth because we'll all have different expectations or ideas on how the HP world looks like. We all would have interpreted each book in a different way.
So yeah, we just need to accept that the movies will never be like the books. Not only are they two different mediums altogether, but well, from the get-go, the movies were only ever meant to be BASED on the events that happen in the books.
Getting back on topic, (bad mod!! *smack*) I definitely think GoF will be well worth the wait. I mean, from what we've been gathering from photos and set reports, it looks like a lot of effort is going into it. And what about that budget eh? Apparently GoF is set to be one of the most, if not THE most expensive film to be released this year.
I'm just really looking forward to seeing Newell's take on a HP film, on GoF. I really think it's a great idea that WB decided to make the HP films not homogenous. The same director for all 7 movies would have been great consistency-wise, but having different directors each time puts a unique stamp on each movie and keeps the series interesting, I reckon.

Yeah, I was dissapointed too, but unfortunately, things have to be cut. Too bad it can't be a three hour long movie. But I'm still very excited to see it!!! But wait, if there isn't going to be any house elves in the next movie, how is Harry going to get the gillyweed when he has to go underwater?
ashleigh07
Apr 24 2005, 09:04 AM
That's an easy enough bit to sort out...Harry will just find out how to use gillyweed another way, from someone/some place else. *shrug* No biggie.

IMHO it will not affect the storyline in anyway how he discovers about gillyweed to help him in the 2nd task.

Finally! Some other people aren't so negative!!
I agree, I think this movie is going to be the best of the four. They seem to be getting better and better, as the actors (and directors) grow.

I'm really excited for the teaser trailer!
And I just hate it when people are so negative! There was a picture of the trio using pencils instead of quills and INSTANTLY people are going on about how the movies going to be bad.

It's annoying, and I wish people would *at least* see the movie or even the trailer before deciding not to see it.
I'm glad we've got some optimistic people here, though!

Just thought I'd drop by to let y'all know that I've seen some clips of GoF!!! Nah nah nah nah nah.....

Sorry...couldn't help it. I'm a big kid...my brother-in-law actually rang me to say that they were airing a promo on CBBC Newsround this afternoon and I only caught the tail end of it, but the clips looked fab!! I'm so wound up I can't tell you!!

I'm such a big kid.....
Bad news is though that they're keeping Cho and Moody under their hats for the time being by the look on it, according to the report anyway, so I guess we'll have to wait a while before we see them. Looks good so far though!!
I'm sure it'll be along the same lines as they're planning to show in the US on Saturday, so I'm sure Matt will have a video up soon for those who missed it. The CBBC website has a couple of screenshots though, if you're interested...keep you going in the meantime...

Now I'm even MORE pumped for GoF - oh hurry on up, Nov 18th!!! *stamps feet impatiently*
You lucky devil you for living in the UK...yeah I'll just have to wait for Matthew to post up the vids on the main site then...

The first pic with Harry and Ron in class...my, have they grown!!

What happened to those two lil' cutiepies in the first film eh?!

And Emma looks absolutely gorgeous in her Yule Ball gown!! I also like the pic with Harry and Parvati dancing, from what I can see, I reckon the Yule Ball scene is gonna be pretty WOW.

Nah it's not bad news...I kinda like it that way actually. Keeps people anticipating and adds to the "mystery" of it all, y'know what I mean?

If they were to show us pics of all the new characters on set in costume, then it'd be so boring when we finally do go and see the film. It'd be pretty cool, I reckon, if they hold back, for example, any pics of Cho all the way till the end and then when we go for the movie it's like, "ooooh there's Cho!!"

Btw kipsy - good to have you on board the "optimistic ship". We need more fans like us eh?!

People who are willing to give the film a fair chance before judging it...it's all about the silver lining in the clouds IMHO. Anyway I totally agree with everything you said, kipsy...glad we're on the same page with this.

yeah! Most definitly!

I mean they've all grown up, and everything is looking fantastic! the QWC is really neat, and the dragon, and GoF (all bluish and cool), and the merpeople, the Yule Ball, everything is AMAZING!
I mean, so what if Hermione's dress in pink instead of blue? It's not the end of the world. The sun will rise each day, life WILL go on.

Have you all seen the trailer? Doesn't it look AMAZING!? Oh how could you possibly deny how great it looks just from the brief shots we've seen so far? I'm SO excited, i can't convey how excited i am, words fail me.
Oh when the Durmstrang folk march into the Great Hall banging their sticks, they look so intimidating you could just cut the tension in the air. Then the shot of Ron & Harry a bit apprehensive yet curious - that's exactly how i felt watching them. There's the sheer size and intricacy of the fantastic maze, the prim and prissy Beauxbatons girls, the set of the 1st task and that dragon... and not to mention the Cho, Fleur, Krum & Cedric actors.
Yeah, this movie will definitely please fans! Hands down the best Harry Potter film we've seen yet. I'm dying from the wait of the film's release (hah, even more so for the 6th book!). Nah seriously, i'm convulsing, can't eat, can't sleep...

what willl annoy me is if the part when harrys mum and dad come out the wand isnt very good, when i read that part in the book i found it sooo emotional and i had a lump in my throat and i think its really good at showing how much james and lily cared for harry and i just thought it was amazing scene so il be very VERY disappointed if it is portrayed well in the film
also i really want to see how the trio have grown and developed as actors they were all loads better in azkaban than chamber and stone, so as there are much more emotional scenes especially for daniel i would really like to see how well he copes with emotional scenes

Yes, I'm clear about the topic title having been the one to open this thread. Well it's great to know you're optimistic for GoF unlike a lot of other fans who have chosen to look at the glass as half empty...
But in your previous post, the one about Frank Bryce, it would have been more appropriately placed in the GoF cuts thread which is why I said you had gone off-topic.
Hope that clears things. |
Yeah, but on alot oif other sites, no one knows if Frank Bryce is in the movie and this is the only site that says he is. That's why I was confused. And your right, I should have put it in the GOF Cuts thread.

So far...since I've seen the trailer everything looks fine except the cup is glass, not wood, and madam Maxime isn't "Big Boned"
