Chapter 3:
Diagon Alley“Lily, wait up!” Lily heard her brother Albus hollering after her as they got out of the family van by the Leaky Cauldron pub in London.
“Come on, guys!”
“Hold on Lil, we’ve got to wait for your mum, brothers, cousins and aunt and uncle, dear!” Harry told her as he tried to stop his runaway daughter.
“But daddy, we’ve got to get into Diagon Alley.” she said, trying to get out of his grasp.
“Haha, we will, hun.”
Lily stopped trying to get out of her fathers grasp and she stood there waiting impatiently for her mum and the others.
“I think we should’ve left Lily at home!” Ginny joked as she walked up to them with the others closely behind.
“MUM!” she complained as they all laughed.
The walked into the pub and towards the back. As they passed, her parents stopped to talk to a few people they recognized. Once in the back, Harry took out his wand and tapped the brick wall five times. The bricks started shifting in all directions to form the entrance to Diagon Alley.
“Why don’t we split up. It’ll make getting the kids’ stuff easier.” Ron suggested.
“I’ll take Rose and Albus. Hermione, you can take James and Albus.” Ginny told Hermione.
“I guess, that leaves me and you, Lil.” Harry told his youngest daughter as she grabbed her father’s hand.
“Meet back at the Ice Cream Parlor?” Hermione asked.
“Always do!” Harry said to Ginny and they went their separate ways.
“So, Lil. Where to first?”
“I want to get my wand!”
“Ollivander’s it is then.” Harry laughed. Lily had been wanting her wand ever since James first got his.
They walked by places like, Madam Malkin’s Robes for All Occasions, Pottidge’s Cauldron Shop, Twilfitt and Tatting’s, Eelops Owl Emporium, and Flourish and Blotts, until finally reaching Ollivander’s Wand Shop. There was a sign plastered above the door: Maker’s of Fine Wands since 382 B.C. Lily and Harry walked in and discovered that Ollivander was no where in site.
“Mr. Ollivander?” Harry asked.
Mr. Ollivander came out from the back of the store where he was doing some store maintenance. “Hello, Mr. Potter. I see young Lily is here to get her wand. Off to Hogwarts this year eh, Miss Potter?”
“Yes, sir.” Lily answered excitedly.
Ollivander began going through his many boxes of un-used wands to find the one that would fit Lily. She watched him excitedly as he pulled one out from a nearby shelf. He opened it, handed Lily the wand and she flicked it. BOOM! Boxes of wands began flying all over the shop.
“Oh, no. That won’t do!” said Ollivander as he took back the wand. He took the wand Lily had and put it back; before he got her another, he took his own from his pocket and cleaned up Lily’s mess.
Ollivander found another wand and she tried it. CRASH! And glass from the store window began to shatter and screams could be heard out in the streets of Diagon Alley.
“No, no, no, no, no. That definitely won’t do!” Ollivander said as he cast Reparo on the store window.
“I-I’m sorry, sir.” Lily apologized as he put the wand back in the box.
“There’s nothing to be sorry about young Lily. It happens all the time when young witches and wizards come in for their wands.” he said as he handed her another wand.
She felt a burst of warmth come into her. It started at her fingertips and went all the way to her toes. A burst of light that almost blinded her emanated from the wand. “Oh, well done, Miss Potter. The wand has chosen its owner: Rosewood, Mermaid Hair, twelve point three inches. Superb job, just let me package it and it’s yours.” Ollivander went in back to package Lily’s wand and he soon returned to the front and handed it to her.
“That will be six galleons.” Harry paid for Lily’s wand. They told Mr. Ollivander good-bye and walked out of the shop.
“How ‘bout we go get your robes, hun?”
“Sure, daddy.” she said, not letting go of her wand.
They made their way to Madam Malkin‘s, when Harry ran into his old school friend Dean Thomas. They began talking and Lily noticed a shop where she been hoping to get her dad something for his birthday. She over at her father and Mr. Thomas who were both talking and took the opportunity to sneak away.
Harry looked around and Lily was no where in sight. “Dean, have you seen Lily?”
“I think she walked into that shop over there.” Dean pointed to the Magical Instruments shop.
“Thanks, Dean. I’ll see you later.” Harry said as he made his way over to the Magical Instruments shop.
“Bye, Harry!” Dean said and went towards the stationary store.
Harry looked around the store and spotted Lily by the checkout counter. “There you go, Miss. Hope your father likes it!” he heard the store clerk say to Lily as she grabbed the wrapped package.
“Oh, hi daddy!”
“Lilian. You don’t run off on me like that! Even though I was talking to Mr. Thomas, you still could have told me where you were going.” Harry told his daughter.
“I-I’m sorry, daddy,” she said, hoping he wouldn’t ask what was in the package.
“It’s okay, come on, we’ve still got to get your other supplies,” he told her as they walked out of the shop and headed towards Madam Malkin‘s. Once inside, the store manager came over and greeted them.
“Hello, Mr. Potter! I see your daughter is here to get her robes. This way miss.” Lily followed her to the back and Harry took a seat.
Harry waited for about fifteen minutes until Lily finally came back out. “She’s all set Mr. Potter. I’ll wrap up her robes and you may go.” A store clerk brought Lily out and Harry paid for her robes.
Harry and Lily walked out of the shop and Harry asked, “So where do you want to go to next Lil?”
“Ohhh, daddy! Can we go to Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes? I want to see Uncle George.” Lily asked.
“I suppose a few minutes wouldn’t hurt.” Harry told her with a smile.
Harry and Lily walked by many shops as they made their way towards Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes. Lily spotted an owl as they passed Eelops Owl Emporium and she turned to Harry and asked, “Daddy, look.”
“What, hun?”
“Daddy, look at that owl!” Lily got excited as she pointed to a small brown and white owl. “Isn’t he cute!? Can I have him?”
“I don’t know Lil. He looks awfully expensive.” Harry said as he looked at the price tag. “Why don’t I talk to your mother and maybe we can get it later.”
“But, daddy!”
“Lily. Don’t argue or you won’t get it!” Harry told her. “Now come on, you wanted to see your Uncle George.” He said as they went towards Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes.
“Hiya, Harry, Lily!” Harry and Lily could hear George’s voice.
“Hey, George.”
“What’s the matter, Lil?” George asked, seeing the look of disappointment on her face.
“Daddy wouldn’t let me get an owl that I wanted.” Lily said as Harry whispered into George’s and told her about the owl. George just smiled.
Lily, Harry and George spent a few minutes talking when Harry finally told Lily, “I suppose we’d better get to the Ice Cream Parlor and meet the others.” Harry said as he started to lead Lily outside.
“Bye, Uncle George!” Lily gave her uncle a hug and walked to the Ice Cream Parlor with her father.
“What’s wrong Lil?” Hugo asked as she and Harry had walked into the Ice Cream Parlor.
“Oh, she’s mad because dad wouldn’t let her go out with a cute guy she saw.” Albus laughed.
“Shut up, Al!” Lily said angrily, as she put her items down on the table where Rose was sitting.
“Ohhhh, she must be really mad!” Albus taunted his sister.
The Potters and Weasleys enjoyed the rest of the day talking and eating ice cream. After a fun fulfilled day at Diagon Alley, Lily was disappointed when they finally decided to go back home.
