I was just wondering about this topic because one of my friends is an exchange student from Korea this year. I wanted to be an exchange student (well, was thinking about it), and I was wondering your opinions on it. I wanted to go to the London, England area. What does anyone think about this? Do you think that would be a good place to go or what are your opinions on studying abroad or being an exchange student in general?

I am probably going to spend a year abroad in college, somewhere in Europe. A college I am considering going to has a campus in Italy so I might do that. We have a French foreign exchange student, she gets along very well with everyone. She is on the basketball with me and even though she doesn't really know whats going on, she tries hard and thats what counts. We had a German exchange student last year, I never talked to her, but she set a bunch of tennis records. I think its a good idea, but you have to be outgoing. I have spent 3 weeks in Australia and New Zealand with a bunch of American kids my age and we did a homestay and I stayed with a family for three days, it was a great experience.

I would love it if I got to study abroad, but I doubt I ever will.

Even Canada would be fine for me...especially if it was in a French-speaking area because I could put all my French-learning skills to the test!

I just think it would be fascinating to do that and see another culture and learn everything that you possibly could...

I've always wanted to study abroad. When I was 15, a woman from a place who exchange students and all went to our school to talk us about that and leave us some pamphlets about that, to see if we wanted to receive a student at home. I asked my parents, but they said no because in that moment we didn't have a car and the house wasn't big enough, and they told me I was nuts if I intended to go abroad. A few years laters I insisted, despite my mom wasn't sure, but the woman didn't come again. If I had the chance now, I'd go to England as well, but it'd have to be a college, because now I'm too old for high school, and since universities in England are very expensive, when here are free, I couldn't go.
But if you have a chance, I wouldn't have a doubt about it!

My family is going to take a foreign exchange student. Her name is Diana and she is from Colombia. I don't know when she will be coming because we still have to do paperwork and the like but I'm pretty excited. I kinda wanted a student from Europe or Africa but Latin America is fine and our exchange student is practically fluent in English.

I'm going to study at the Australian National University, and as part of my Politics course they're sending me to Washington DC for a 6 week internship. I'm so nervous; I've only ever been overseas to Bali, and that was for partying.... this is for work, research and study.
But at the same time I'm so excited to experience a whole new country, and learn as much as I can in the small amount of time I'm there.
Can any Americans help me out - is the cost of living expensive? I know our dollar buys about 80c of yours (as of today - though it varies so much in such a small space of time now days (it was 60c 6 months ago)), but how much money do you think i'd need for 6 weeks (I need accommodatiom/transport etc).
I'm so psyched. It should be AWESOME!!!

I don't think I'd like to study abroad.. don't get me wrong, I love travelling and exploring new places, but I don't know if I could spend so much time away from home, in a strange country. Any longer than a month in a different country would be a bit much for me I think.
I dunno, there's a part of my course next year that gives me the opportunity to study abroad.. I might change my mind.

I think it would be awesome to be an exchange student, especially if you go to another country with a different language, then it would put all your language skills to the test. I realllllly want to but i dont think i would ever get the chance to become an exchange student, but for anyone who does have the chance- go for it!!

This might be a little late, but... D.C. is
really expensive, mainly because that's a huge tourist site because of all the museums and such. Depends on if you live cheap or not.

There was a girl who came from Korea this year as an exchange student. We all bonded because my friends and I are very welcoming people. A lot of people in our school are. It was cool to get to know her and about her culture. I know for a fact, now, that I never want to go to school in Korea, (no offense to anyone meant). We are way behind here in the U.S., but they go to school a lot. It seems like a very welcoming experience, it's just the fact of being away for a year for me.

Ever since I took a trip to Spain and Switzerland (a couple others) I have always wanted to study abroad. I want to learn multiple languages and I think studying abroad would help with the schooling I have already had. I think it would be fun and educational.
We have had several exchange students at my school a well and they have all had great experiences here and have all been really nice.

My foreign exchange student from Colombia arrived tonight. She is super nice and easy to talk to. She speaks English pretty darn well and is quite adamant that I learn more Spanish... which will likely end up as a fail but you never know.
