Hey all!
I just got thinking and I was wondering what the wizarding world be like if electronics entered it? Let me know your thoughts!

Electronic devices go haywire around magic so it wouldn't work.
If it could work, I don't think it would be as nice. It would take away from the traditions of the magical world and if magical folk got too dependant on muggle electronics it would mean the possible end on many household spells.
Part of the fun in the magical world is that they still use old fashioned methods such as candles, old fashioned stoves and open fireplaces. I think it's nicer without electricity.

Oh my gosh. All I have to say is that I would never use electronics or anything like that if I could do magic. I mean, what's the point? Electronics go haywire as it is, so there's no need for something as simple as magic(ha) to make them even more complicated.

I think they wouldn't really care. I mean, magic can give you almost everything you need. You can transport yourself most places, and you can clean and stuff.

, I don't think it would get rid of household spells. They can do things much faster and it takes to much time and wizards would think it takes to much time and energy to use things we have. I remember somewhere in one of the books that Mr. Wealey or somebody was amazed that Muggles created electricity. So..... I think he would be one of the few who might find it interesting and be willing to use it, hehe.

mugglelovrspew,
very good points, if you could do magic then you wouldn't need electricity. You're right, Arthur Weasley would love it. He experiments with plugs and batteries in his shed so I think he would be like Dudley in Honeydukes if he had a fully wired muggle house at his disposal.

Jo did mention that wizards liked the idea of certain muggle inventions that they adapted them such as the wireless and cameras although wizard photos are a good step ahead of muggle ones. Also, wizards use plumbing - flushing toilets, pipes and so on. So wizards aren't completely without muggle inventions.

I reckon it might be used in a small way, but it could never take over. Also, there might me electronics clubs for people like Mr Weasley...

I think that there is actually a rather large amount of muggle inventions which have been altered for wizard needs, someone mentioned plumbing and cameras, and they also have radios.

And about this thing concerning electrical appliances not working around magic; I imagine that it'd take quite a lot of magic to cause disturbances. In places such as Hogwarts, wizard homes and wizard shops it probably wouldn't work, but I think that if you just cast a few spells in the same room as a TV it probably functions as normal, right?

And clocks.

I've always thought what a stupid thought from anti-Muggles wizards to think like that, and that Muggles just invent nonsense that no one needs, and that everything Muggles invents is to replace magic.
First, of course it is! Muggles don't have magic, but have the same brain that wizards, because magic doesn't need intelligence to be owned, only requires intelligence to be performed. So what are Muggles supposed to do, live in caves and look at their hands while wizards go on?
And second and most important... is it that Muggles invented everyday stuff, like chairs let's say, as 'Muggle chairs' and wizards invented 'wizard chairs'? I think there're certain stuff that you can't just say 'Ok, that is Muggle and we wizards don't need it'. It's really ilogical: wizards wouldn't levitate whenever they want to rest, they need furniture for instance; then, parchment, which might be invented by wizards or muggles but it's formerly a Muggle experiment... So, I find the whole thing really annoying. Besides, it's that of wizarding alterations on Muggle stuff: there wouldn't be any wizarding clock if Muggles hadn't invented first Muggle clocks. And then, would people survive without knowing the exact time nowadays?
I don't know, actually. If I ran into an anti-Muggle, I'd jinx him/her to have a pipe stuck in his/her ... pocket.

Well, considered that wizard and muggle populations weren't seperated until somwhere around the 15th century, clocks could have been either muggle or wizard inventions. The same goes for chairs and stuff like that, which have probably never been 'invented' but just altered a little bit now and then (probably started out as a nice flat rock against a cave wall or something).

About the segregation of wizards and muggles as a phenomenon: I don't belive that most wizards who might be inclined towards the more pro-segregation thoughts actually are hostile towards muggles and their life-style as such (and taking advantage of muggle inventions), more the mixing of it for safety. That's what started the hole pure-blood thing, I would imagine, fright for muggle-borns because they were 'more muggle' and thus more prone towards wizard hatred. Of course that is very illogical since they would be wizards themselves, but fear is rarely logical.

i suppose you wouldnt' really need electronics in the magical world because you have magic, but just as a thought- wouldn't you be able to use a shield charm to stop magic in the air from interfearing with whatever muggle device you wanted to use?

If the wizarding world had electronics, they would probaly have as many problems with them as we muggles do. But of course the upside to them being magical if their computer got a virus in it, instead of calling the customer service dept. for said computer they could fix it themselves with their wands. But it would seem weird if Harry and everyone had cell phones, and tv's to watch and instead of candlelight having lights and things. It would take away from the whole magical aspect of things if they too had electronics like us.
