I saw this movie many times and I love it. It's so much fun and the cast is great! So I figured now that we can open topics without needing permission and all, I would start a Mamma Mia topic. Tell what you thought of the movie, if you've seen the play, and everything about Mamma Mia!

Wasn't this just brilliant. The acting was rubbish, Pearce Brosnan couldn't sing for toffee but it sure did make you feel good!

I couldn't help grinning when I came out of the cinema, and I swore that once the dvd came out I would try to learn that dance they do to Dancing Queen. I don't know about you guys but no matter what even I go to, be it a wedding or a party, they play Dancing Queen and we all do the same stupid swaying from side to side dance....rubbish! Anyway, I have the DVD and still haven't got around to trying to do it....must put it on my list of things to do in '09!

Abba rock!

Yeah Pierce Brosnan isn't much of a singer, but I thought everyone else did a fair job with their singing jobs. Something I love about Mamma Mia is how it makes you want to get up and dance (I'm not a dancer) and sing. I'd love to go see the play on Broadway or something because I've heard that people get up and dance in the aisles!

I was watching the bonus disc, and the actors were saying that everybody always thinks of Abba songs as very easy to sing, but in truth, they can have a large range and the harmonies are hard.

Doesn't the movie make you want to go to Greece? The scenery was absolutely stunning and the water was beautiful. So much better than most of the beaches where I live!

So this thread isn't moving anywhere fast, but I'd love for it to get some other people's opinion on the movie or Abba songs. Did you love it? Hate it? Anything!

What were your favorite songs?

My favorite song was Lay All Your Love On Me. It was a really cool song. My second favorite was Honey, Honey. I loved the way the showed off the scenery during the song too.

What about you?

I've loved ABBA as long as I have lived, so this movie was just brilliant for me! I don't think I've ever had so much fun going to the movies before I saw this movie. Everyone was singing along and you couldn't help dancing a little in your own seat. At the end of the movie everyone got up and sang along and danced. I didn't even know norwegians could behave like this, but I guess that is what ABBA does to you.

My favourite was probablu "lay all your love on me". I haven't heard this song that many times before and I was pleasantly surprised. This is probably the only one of the songs that can live up to ABBAs version. I also liked the ballad Meryl Streep sing to Amanda. I don't think I've heard it before, but it was beautiful and I can't believe that I've missed it. Anyway that song is now a new ABBA-favourite.

And "Honey, honey" was great! I liked the "dot, dot, dot". I've even started saying it myself nowadays!

My favorite song was also 'Lay All Your Love On Me'. It was a lot of fun and it sounded really cool.

That must have been so much fun! I wish my theater had done that. But sadly, when I saw it in theaters, it wasn't such a good experience. Somebody brought like eight kids, all of which looked the age of seven and down. The adults just left them in the theater and went out of the theater until the end of the movie. They were goofing off and being loud, so it was hard to pay attention and have a good time. But I got the movie for Christmas and every time I watch it, I sing along!

Did anybody see Amanda Seyfried (sp) on the Academy Awards? She presented with Robert Pattinson. They presented the romance category and they played in a little joke and she was like "Well I have three fathers." It was kind of funny.

Near the end of the movie, I think it is absolutely hilarious when Julie Walters does "Take a Chance On Me". She's wonderful doing that scene and song. I love how she starts out near him, sort of whispering to him, and then at another point she is on top of the table! That was really funny.

Yeah that was funny! I have also started using it, as a sort of code when I don't want to say something outright, if you know what I mean. I was trying to explain something about a book, and the woman I was talking to could see that I was struggling to explain, so she said, "You mean, dot dot dot!" And we both started cracking up. Nobody else understand what we were talking about! It was so funny.

And Mamma Mia has made me like the name Sophia, since the main character's name was Sopie.

"Mamma Mia, does it show again, my my, just how much I missed yeah." I love Mamma Mia! I went to the CD store right after I walked out of the theater and we bought the CD! My favorite song would have to be 'Voulez Vous' or 'Gimme, Gimme, Gimme a Man After Midnight'. Those are two really upbeat and fast songs.

I saw her, and I thought it was quite funny. I really like her singing the song at the end 'I Have A Dream', and do you own the soundtrack? IF you let that song play, about 2 minutes later another one comes on that she sings which is absoulutely fabulous!

I think Julie Walters did a heck of a job. It's so funny because she's truly trying. Young love wink.gif

I haven't watched the movie yet. I've heard a lot of good comments about it, but I'm not into "musicals" where people sing more often than they talk. I will watch it one day. tongue.gif

Anyways, I just wanted to say something about going to Skiathos, the island where the movie was shot. Apparently, the island became very popular because of the movie, and most of the people I know went there, instead of other more popular summer destinations. A funny incident: I met a girl from Portugal who is here on Erasmus, an exchange program for students from all around Europe. When she found out she was coming to Greece, all of her friends were making fun of her (because of football, whatever!), but when the movie was released, they were all jealous of her. laugh.gif It's funny how much impact movies actually have on people. mellow.gif

That's funny, alkisti, how first her friends were making fun of her, then they were all jealous! I would be jealous too!

Kiersten, I was listening the soundtrack a long time ago in the car and I heard that there was Thank You for the Music after I Have a Dream. At the time, I was wondering why there was like 7 minutes worth of music supposedly on the song, but I Have A Dream cut off at like 4 minutes.

Was anybody frustrated because we are never told who the real father is?

I was a little frustrated, because when I first started seeing the commercials for Mamma Mia, I didn't even know it was a musical. So I thought the whole storyline was about finding who her dad was. All the way through the movie, I was wondering who her dad was and trying to figure it out before they told us, but they never said. I'm not mad or anything about it, just frustrated.

I really like Abba's songs AND Colin Firth, so of course I had to see the movie. I can say it was just what I expected.
The scenery of my country was lovely happy.gif , the actors sang the songs very well and it was just a great light summer movie.
I must say I am still surprised at what a great voice Amanda has! I love listening to the songs she sings! She's amazing! They couldn't get a better girl for the part.

My favourite songs were 'Dancing queen', 'Mamma mia' and 'Our last summer'. About the last one, it was funny seeing(and listening to) Colin sing and anyway, I liked the memories and the father-daughter bonding. wub.gif

I guess, I wasn't disappointed that the true father identity wasn't revealed. It is more special now that she has 3 fathers. smile.gif

New question:

If you could guess which of the three was Sophie's real father, who would you say?

I would say Sam. It seems like they were meant to be a family most of all. There's not much I can say besides that I think Sam is destined to be her father.

That is so cool that you live in Greece, crazy4u! It seems like such a beautiful place with stunning landscape. How is the temperature there, though. It seems like most people think it is going to be sunny and hot all year round. But when the cast of Mamma Mia was filming, they said it was rather cold, some days. What do you say?

i was forced to watch this movie, and I thought it was terrible. Awful singing, and really bad acting. I am a guy, but I wouldn't have liked this movie if I was a girl.

Hi, HarryPotterNut. Maybe Broadway just isn't your style of music, and true, live music is always cooler, but what was it about the singing and movie you didn't like? How was the acting bad?

As to not finding out who her father is, the whole point of the musical is to learn the different men's identities. You're supposed to decide for yourself. smile.gif I was confused at first too, but I truly believe that she has a little of each of them inside of her.
browneyedgirl
well, i knew when Mamma Mia was being made into a movie, i had to see it because the play was absolutely brilliant. biggrin.gif
i absolutely adored the movie. minus when Pearce Brosnan sang. that was just.. interesting. but i love musicals, so my liking the movie is really no surprise.

What were your favorite songs?
i love ABBA, and its hard to pick a favourite song.. hmm.. i love Dancing Queen, Honey Honey, Mamma Mia, Our Last Summer, SOS, Take a Chance on Me smile.gif

Was anybody frustrated because we are never told who the real father is?
i dont know if id say i was frustrated exactly, but kind of annoyed? no, annoyed isnt the right word either. well, it didnt bug me that much. but at the same time, i wish i knew who was the father.

If you could guess which of the three was Sophie's real father, who would you say?
i really dont know. i think if i had to pick id probably say Sam. but only because the movie implied it so much.

I agree with some people here, Pierce Brosnan didn't have decent pipes... He's just popular. I don't think he should quit his day job...

MY FAVORITE SONG
Oy... I liked "Honey Honey"..... I think some of the dances in the movie were funny and some parts, especially Rosie and Tanya. I think those were the names... Rosie reminded me of my own Gramma....

WAS I MAD?
I don't konw, I sort of liked the mystery but it got a little old. The whole time I was thinking, "All right, it's gotta be pretty simple to do a blood test or something...."

HER FATHER?
I think it was Bill... just because of the whole money thing and the Sophia deal. Sam was the implied was the implied one, he was the bigger character...

haha, I agree. I hated it whenever he had to sing. It was horrible tongue.gif

I would have to say my favourite song is "Chiquitita", the song Tanya and Rosie sing EVEN THOUGH it isn't on the soundtrack. I don't know why, but it's just catchy, and i's almost like one of those best friend songs. And I also looooove the harmonies biggrin.gif After that song, I would say "Voulez Vous", "Honey Honey", and "Lay Your Love on Me".

If you could guess which of the three was Sophie's real father, who would you say?

I would say either Bill or Harry. They both just seemed more fitting as Sophie's father than Sam; that and I don't like Peter Brosnan in this movie xD
