Welcome to a brand new thread, Twilighters!

For those of you who don't know, the Twilight Saga consists of four books written by Stephenie Meyer: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. A forth book in the Twilight Universe, Midnight Sun, (the story of Twilight from Edward's perspective) was put on hold indefinitely, but the first chapters can be found at the author's website. The basic plotline is about a human girl, Bella, who falls in love with the vampire Edward. Naturally, their relationship has several problems. Edward, along with his four "siblings", pretend to be students at Bella's high school, adopted by Esme and Carlisle. The books are written from Bella's point of view, concentrating on the different aspects of being in a relationship with an immortal as well as the complications of being so in tune with the vampire world bring. Though the story might sound a little strange, the books are fantastic and will surely captivate you from the first chapter.

The Host, was also written by Stephenie Meyer, takes place in an entirely different universe from the Saga. The story begins as we follow a race of alien "souls" who attempt to take over the bodies of humans. Melanie will not let the thing have her so easily, she has a family to take care of and people who love her. A very good read. As Meyer says, it's a "science fiction novel for those that hate science fiction!"

**This thread is solely related to the BOOKS! We have provided another thread dedicated to the movies.**

Since I've heard people interested, I've attached a poll. Feel free to add your reasons in the posts.

I think we've done this before, but I'm always curious to hear what people have to say. What are some of your favorite book quotes?

So there you are, have at it! happy.gif
Jilly bean
oo yay first post!!!

So I chose Twilight on the poll...it was my favorite of the saga and I haven't read the host, the first chapter of midnight sun looks amazing...but I'm going to reserve my opinion on it for if/and when she publishes it.

My favorite quotes from the books... hmm

Twilight:

"So, did you stab Edward Cullen with a pencil or what?"

"Once people start throwing wet stuff, I go inside."

"I thought you were supposed to be pretending I don’t exist, not irritating me to death."

"I can’t imagine why that would be frustrating at all — just because someone refuses to tell you what they’re thinking, even if all the while they’re making cryptic little remarks specifically designed to keep you up at night wondering what they could possibly mean… now, why would that be frustrating?"

"I’m going to run over Tyler Crowley tomorrow before school?"

"And you accused me of dazzling people — poor Jacob Black."

"I fall down a lot when I run."

"I do have some trouble with incoherency when I’m around him."

"Maybe he’ll think I fell in the washer."

"Oops"

"Your hair looks like a haystack...but I like it"

"I think I forgot to breathe."

"He swam to France?"

"Wait… Which one is Edwin?"

"I felt moisture filling up my eyes as I looked at Emmett. I barely knew him, and yet, somehow, not knowing when I would see him again after tonight was anguishing." (I'm not normally one for the 'mushy' quotes...but who doesn't love Emmett?)

"Immortality must grant endless patience."

"Don’t forget to breathe."

"I’m betting on Alice."

New Moon(I won't get so carried away I promise):

"I have to step out for a second. Don’t do anything funny while I’m gone"

"Well, that’s everyone. I can clear a room, at least."

"How the hell did Mike Newton end up in this conversation?"

"Have you been hurt?"

Eclipse:

"Did you fall down again?"
"No Emmett, I punched a werewolf in the face"

I've got to go...I'll be back with more when I think of them!!

*Jilly*

haha

i picked new moon

i just found it so.... so.... emotional!! i love emotional books!!

i dont know why people like eclipse. personally, i found it extremely boring tongue.gif

thats about it haha.
but i have to admit. ive read new moon about 5 billion times, breaking dawn about 3 million, twilight 2 million, and eclipse not so much, but still alot haha
Honeybee
I'm kind of excited that this thread is starting out fresh. Woohoo. woot.gif

I have to say that my favorite book in the series would have to be Eclipse. *cough* Chapter 20* cough* hehe

As for some of my favorite " Twilight" quotes:

-His fingers were ice-cold, like he’d been holding them in a snowdrift before class. But that wasn’t why I jerked my hand away so quickly. When he touched me, it stung my hand as if an electric current had passed through us.

-Hasn’t anyone ever told you? Life isn’t fair.

-Stupid, shiny Volvo owner.

-What if I’m not a superhero? What if I’m the bad guy?

-Do I dazzle you?

-About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was part of him — and I didn’t know how potent that part might be — that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

-Of all the things about me that could frighten you, you worry about my driving.

-Yes, you are exactly my brand of heroin.

-And so the lion fell in love with the lamb…

-If I could dream at all, it would be about you. And I’m not ashamed of it.

-I may not be a human, but I am a man.

-Oh, I’m with the vampires, of course.

I'll be back to list more... I know I ramble. smile.gif

I have only read Twilight and New Moon and I have to say that I LOVE THEM!!! I have just started to read Eclipse and I can't wait until I've finished the whole series and moved on to The Host and then Midnight Sun!!! I'll post back on this thread after I've finished reading them all and let you know which is my favourite!!!

Cheers

P.S. My friend is in LOVE with Jacob Black and I LOVE EMMETT CULLEN!!! Me and my friend both share Jasper Cullen, Seth and Embry!!!

Jilly bean
I do like Eclipse...but it is definitely not my favorite of the series.

Okay I have some more quotes for new moon... When Jacob's not being a butt-head he's really quite funny

"Sometimes you’re a little strange, Bella. Do you know that?"

"I swear, they’re like hall monitors gone bad."

"Why are you apologizing for bleeding?"

"So are you going to be my Valentine? Since you didn’t get me a fifty-cent box of candy, it’s the least you can do."

"Do you honestly expect me to remember where all my scars come from?"

"I was beginning to babble. I had to work to shut myself up."

"Wasn’t one myth enough for anyone, enough for a lifetime?"

"You aren’t turning into a tree-hugger on me, are you?"

"I’m sort of used to weird by this point, you know."

"I bet she’s tougher than that. She runs with vampires."

"Bella is not bait."

"Leave it to you, Bella. Anyone else would be better off when the vampires left town. But you have to start hanging out with the first monsters you can find."

"You don’t get a lot of suicidal vampires."

"You remind me of him—only he was not so angry."

"I think she’s having hysterics. Maybe you should slap her."

"I’d forgotten that I had access to a toothbrush. It brightened my outlook considerably."

Okay it's official...I have no life... maybe just one or two from Eclipse

"I’m really glad Edward didn’t kill you. Everything’s so much more fun with you around."

"If we had happy endings, we’d all be under gravestones now."

"Edward has always been a little strange."

"Haven’t you noticed yet, Bella, that Edward is just the teeniest bit prone to overreaction?"

"This hostage stuff is fun"

"Edward is such a grouch when he doesn’t get his way"

"You know, Edward, as a brother, you are sometimes a disappointment."

"You truly are one frightening little monster."

Okay so that was a lot more than two... I'll be back later with Breaking Dawn quotes

I actually voted for Midnight Sun. As much as I loved all the books, getting Bella's point of view drove me nuts by the time we got to Breaking Dawn. The best part of that for me was Jacobs book. Having his view of everything was refreshing but I wanted Edwards point of view and felt kind of cheated that Jacob had his written and not Edward. That's why I love what there is of Midnight Sun. You see that despite all her inadequacies exactly just why Edward fell in love with Bella.

You feel his pain at thirsting for her blood and when he realises he needs to protect her from the world because she's such a clutz.

I have heard various rumours that Stephenie is going to continue with this project and I sincerely hope she does. For me it is her best work and if she doesn't release it in book form she's penalising her fans and shooting herself in the foot.

I have only read the Host the once. I found it hard to get into at first but I liked the story even though it's pretty obvious she becomes attached to her main characters and can't let them die! She is the queen of loopholes!

nevillesgirl
I would have voted for Midnight Sun except I may be one of the handful of people on the planet who didn't read the leaked chapters so I am sincerely hoping that Stephanie Meyers continues with this project for my selfish sake. biggrin.gif

I voted for Eclipse. This book provided the closest thing to the ending battle that I expected in Breaking Dawn. I really loved the tension through out the entire book: Tension between Bella and Edward because of her desire to become immortal so soon, tension between Edward and Jacob, Tension between Jacob and Bella, and then the tension I put upon myself as I read and wanted Victoria gone.

The other thing I really liked was the cooperation between the wolves and the vampires and even that had tension. Actually, I don't think I would have liked it as much without the tension.

While disappointed that Jacob ended up imprinting on Reneesme, I did enjoy thinking that he was committed to Bella. It was a bit childish and annoying at times but he seemed devoted and willing to fight for what he wanted and I appreciated the way that was written.

What is it about the Series that you found most disappointing or annoying?

Definitely in Eclipse when Bella says she's in love with Jacob, too. I found that incredibly annoying... I mean doesn't she say in New Moon that she wished that Jacob had been born her brother? Yeah I was pretty ticked at Jacob for making her kiss him at that point.

*Jilly bean*

I personally picked Midnight Sun. It was so refreshing with whatever I read. I loved seeing other people from someone who can read minds rather than a girl who is in love with someone. It opens up more things. And Edward really is like the other side of the story that we never got to see.

But if it weren't for Midnight Sun then right away would I have picked Twilight. It was so raw and innocent and cute that I loved it sooo much. I've read the book about 6 times and never get bored. And its so funny when I re-read because now that I know the whole saga and what happens reading it is like looking back into a family photo. Then I really liked Eclipse because it got more steamy. It finally hit a sexual clean level that it needed. Then Breaking Dawn and lastly New Moon.

What is it about the Series that you found most disappointing or annoying?

Like some have mentioned I don't like how Bella thought that she loved Jacob. But something that really bothered was like the teasing through out the whole book. I mean in BD when Bella and Edward were finally in there honeymoon regardless of the age group that it reaches to, SM could've atleaset added a little more than just a blackout. But that my opinion.

I am very happy that there finally is a thread for the books to be discussed . I thought the other thread was so much about the movie, and I haven't seen it yet, because the premiere is on February 6th and I didn't want to download it. So thanks !:D

Anyway, I picked Midnight Sun as well (a little troubled why it only shows 2 who picked Midnight Sun in the Poll:S). I picked it because I really liked to get inside Edwards mind, to hear his reasons (just the scene in Biology class where he is close to Bella for the first time) is amazing. Edward really is the main character (for me anyway, without him all the brilliance of the book wouldn't be there). And I sincerely hope that Stephenie Meyer will finish the project because it was just so brilliant.
However, I also liked Eclipse very much, because it wasn't too sugar sweet, so mushy, but a little "hotter" and adult so to speak. And we had Edward again biggrin.gif

What is it about the Series that you found most disappointing or annoying?
I was really disappointed in BD, when the fight they had been prepared for for so incredibly long, just ended in ... nothing. I had really hoped they would get in a huge fight with the Volturi and hopefully win. But instead they just made peace, which might be more diplomatic and political correct, nevertheless a little boring. Just my opinion
nicky potter
I really honestly didn't mind the lack of a battle as many would say and wanted. I was really happy that no one important die. I mean it did build me up and stuff but the relief was more than great ((((: Thanks. lol

What is it about the Series that you found most disappointing or annoying?

Lulu-lolo, I completely agree with you. I didn't like Breaking Dawn at all. It was a huge disappointment for me. It kept leading up and up and then it was done. The battle never happened. That was pretty much what the whole book was leading up to. I found the book very predictable. You just knew they wouldn't harm Bella's baby and I found the plot very boring. I don't intend to read it again.

So, for the vote I chose Twilight. It was so wholesome and kept me hooked the entire time. There wasn't anything really trashy in it and it was just so exciting! Once I started it I couldn't put it down!

I hated and I mean hated when Bella said she loved Jacob. When I read that I wanted to throw the book out the window. In eclipse when she told Jacob to kiss her I nearly ripped the page.I mean she said she loved Edward and then said she loved JAcob. In the end I was glad that she could still be friends with him,but not romantic strings attached.

As to the whole BD fight no fight I am glad there wasn't any.I mean it would have added up to the suspense, but what would really be the point of having some the characters killed off.I would have been very unhappy.

Rosie! It's been too long! laugh.gif How are you?

I didn't like what went on between Bella and Jacob either. Jacob acted too childish for me and it bothered me how he acted once Edward was back. The whole tension between them was so annoying. And Bella kept going back and forth with it. That was probably the worst part about that whole thing. She loved Edward, so end of story. happy.gif

Bella! For a supposedly intelligent girl she was pretty stupid half the time. For someone who was supposed be in love with the love of her life, she never seemed really happy about it. But I blame the author for that. At the beginning of New Moon Bella tells us she had the happiest summer of her life and yet when we meet her again at the beginning of the book it's her birthday and she's back to being a misery guts and an ungrateful misery guts at that. Why all the fuss about her birthday? Ok so we know that she was upset at being older than Edward, but about the gifts, she should have accepted the inevitable, that no matter what she said, the Cullens would want to lavish attention on her.

What is it about the Series that you found most disappointing or annoying?

twilight-
hmm. it took too long for them to fall in love. and the movie was, sorry, but APPALING!!!!

new moon-
my best book. no flaws in that one!!

eclipse-
uh, worst book i thought. there wasnt much of a fight. and the "i love you, Jacob" thing was just unwanted. it just made me roll my eyes and think "gosh make your mind up!"

breaking dawn-
uhm....
took abit too long to get to the birth of Renesmee. and then.... the "fight" part wasnt that good

haah. refreshed. lol. i love rants smile.gif

what about the best?

what do you love about the twilight series (what was your favourite part)?
etphonehome
Half-blood princess- you may have not noticed since it is a new thing, we have a thread to discuss the movie seperate fron this one. Perhaps you could air your views over there- you might face the lynch mob so tread carefully lol!!! blink.gif

I forgot to say what I found disappointing. Breaking Dawns ending basically. Someone needed to die, there should have been some kind of battle and Bella so shouldn't have been so darn perfect.
Lulu-lolo
I know! Breaking Dawn just ended too well! It was too happy, and the whole book just summed up everything. It was good to have a happy ending, but endings should also be a little sad. My opinion anyway.
becky12
My favourite was Breaking Dawn, I'm not exactly certain why, it had some of my favourite moments from the series but some of the book did get rather tedious (mainly the build up to the battle and the amount written about the pregnancy)

I haven't read The Host but given how much I love her writing I might get round to checking it out at some point

Midnight Sun might end up being my favourite book if (hopefully smile.gif) she releases it. I've read the partial draft she uploaded to her website and I absolutely love it, it's fascinating reading the story from Edward's point of view and I love seeing the interactions between the Cullens and Edward's gift being seen first hand.

What is it about the Series that you found most disappointing or annoying?

Well, all I have read so far is just Twilight, but I would have to say...umm...all of it. blush.gif I'm sorry, I tried to like it--I at least read it because I'm not going to blindly condemn a book without reading it. But I did read it and while it's not as awful as some people who hate it portray it to be...I don't think it's really that good.

For one thing, Bella is a total Mary Sue character(Mary Sue). It seems like, based on the personality characteristics Stephenie Meyer portrays, Bella should be more of an outsider in Forks. Not the one who's practically beloved. It's unrealistic for someone to move to a town and be instantly loved like Bella is. It does seem like Bella is just the way she is because Stephenie's fulfilling some wish to be this wonderful person...only Bella's personality isn't all that wonderful. She does have flaws, they're just portrayed in the complete opposite way, and treated like they are good things.

I also find it unrealistic that no one figures out what the Cullens are besides Bella. Sure, maybe no one in the Cullen family had rescued someone before, but I find it difficult to believe that a stray ray of sunshine through a cloud wouldn't highlight one of the Cullens and thus reveal their sparkling secret.

And that's another thing I didn't find very realistic. They sparkle in sunlight?! blink.gif Now kudos to Stephenie Meyer for breaking away from the traditional vampire myths, I suppose, but vampires are supposed to be frightening. Not glittering when the sun shines like they belong in a jewelry store. The "vegetarian" aspect seems fine, because they're not actual vegetarians, they just feed from animals. And that's understandable. That part is good, showing them as like "good" vampires because they don't feed on humans.

I have to admit, too, that I just don't like the way Stephenie Meyer writes. blush.gif It seems way too adolescent and awkward for someone of her age. Like she's fourteen and writing this book series. Her sentence construction is just too complicated and full of unneeded modifiers to me...which is probably just the English wanna-be professor in me coming out.

I guess that I think that Twilight is an okay book, and probably okay series, but I don't understand all the hype around it. It doesn't seem that good to me.

*hides from lynch mob now*
snaperules
Eisa, I completely understand where you are coming from. Honestly, I enjoy the majority of the series, but what you mentioned are exactly my feelings toward Bella and the Cullens.

Anyway, my problem is how Bella falls for both Jacob and Edward. I would rather have had it that Edward never come back and Jacob be the other one in the spotlight. ^.^ She should NOT have done that; it is just hurting everyone around her, and honestly I despise that in books. Another thing is how angry she gets with Jacob for imprinting on Renesmee; he cannot help t, and it's better than him imprinting on her. I agree with Bella on one thing; she is a selfish heartless person and I wished that Stephanie Meyer would have just killed her.

what do you love about the twilight series (what was your favourite part)?

Maybe my favorite part was also my least favorite part; when Bella finally finds out that she actually does love Jacob. It made me happy because I was tired of her fighting that emotion that I knew was there from the second book. My problem with it was that she was killing both of them; I could care less about how it hurt her. She was right; she is the monster. No questions asked. dry.gif

Snapefan21
What is it about the Series that you found most disappointing or annoying?
As so many have said before, Bella.
She told everyone not to fuss over her, yet I could tell she expected them to anyway, and if they didn't, they weren't worthy. Maybe Jessica was mean for leaving her in New Moon, but do you really blame her? It's a bit hard for someone to stay friends with a zombie. Or even be nice to them. I'm not saying Jessica was the nicest person in the world, but what she did was a bit expected. Jessica was probably a bit afraid of Bella's personality change. It's actually surprising how the rest of her friends acted like nothing happened.
If I could change one thing about the series, it would be that the end of it wasn't so perfect.

I really did enjoy the series, though. Don't get me wrong. tongue.gif Disliking the main character is very strange, I know.

My favourite part of the series was all the lovely story-telling done by Jacob's relatives and the vampires. It was really interesting. biggrin.gif

I really did enjoy the series, though. Don't get me wrong. tongue.gif Disliking the main character is very strange, I know.

Well, it's not that disliking the main character is very strange...I mean, if the main character is supposed to be like the anti-hero, then it's probably normal to dislike the main character. I mean, think about something like The Silence of the Lambs. It's more obvious in the sequel Hannibal but Hannibal Lecter is one of the main characters...and he's a convicted murderer. Yet you still read the book and enjoy it because even though he's a bad guy, he's still likable in some twisted kind of way.

I think the problem with how Bella is portrayed is that she is supposed to be the heroine, not the "bad guy." Not only is she supposed to be the heroine, but she is supposed to be at least fairly likable, based on how the other characters interact with her. And she's not. It seems an utter mystery to both the readers (or at least me tongue.gif ) and even her herself, since she wonders at how people seem to like her and how she acquires friends. She's not so much a bad girl kind of character as she just seems flat and annoying to me. It's like she has no flaws, and everyone has at least one "fatal flaw." It's what makes literature and character development interesting. No one wants to read about someone who's perfect. But Bella is, somehow, the most wonderful girl in the world while being personality-wise someone who's really not all that great.

And if she was portrayed that way, as more of an ordinary girl, then it would actually work and make more sense. I think another problem is while Bella isn't all that "interesting" I guess you could say? Edward is portrayed as the epitome of perfection. And that's just not realistic at all to me. He's "perfect" in a different kind of way as Bella because at least Bella has flaws, even if no one else seems to think they are. dry.gif Edward apparently doesn't have any at all. Or at least, that's how it seems in the first book.
Jilly bean

Oh gosh, I don't think that's true at all. Of course Edward had flaws... so you've only read the first book... but didn't you see a tendency to overreact...or the fact that he's massively overprotective. There are more of them, too! It's not that I dislike Edward...I love him but I think those flaws are what makes him most lovable, I'd have a hard time loving someone who was perfect.

One thing I loved was reading from Jacobs POV in Breaking Dawn...it was a breath of fresh air, Jacob's just a more, I don't know...*searches for the right word* optimistic...entertaining...

*Jilly*
Eisa
Jilly bean~Hmm. Okay, you have a point. Maybe what I meant more than that he has no flaws is that Bella treats him like he has no flaws or like he really is perfect. I mean, she gets annoyed at how he over-reacts and stuff, but it's still kind of portrayed as "he's such a wonderful awesome person anyway," you know? Not like those would be reasons to dislike him.

I agree, Jacobs story lightened what in essence was a really dark book. I loved his jokes, his annoyance with Rosalie was very entertaining. I missed the 'old' Edward in Breaking Dawn, the burning man that Stephenie Meyer wrote wasn't my favourite although I could understand how he would be like that.

Eisa, the whole point of the Twilight series is that it's written for one persons point of view, Bella's, we don't have to agree with her perception and I frequently do not. She is pretty shallow for a start. By that I mean her first thought about Edward was how incredibly good looking he was and that was her primary attraction. That's pretty believable though, don't you think? That's the first impression of everyone we have until we get to know them. I just think Bella was a little slow to get past the visual attraction she had for him and learn more about the man he was inside until much later in the book series. I think for you to get a better insight into Edward you should read the first twelve chapters of Midnight Sun. His point of view, for my noney, is far better!

Personally when I read Twilight for the first time, I certainly didn't look too deeply into the characters, I just thought aww, what a nice love story!
Eisa
Well, I do want to at least finish the series so I can say I read them...I guess I just don't like Stephenie Meyer's way of writing. tongue.gif Although I did try! I'll see if I can read the first 12 chapters and see it from Edward's perspective. That sounds more interesting.

Heh, and I know it's just written from one point of view but usually, you're supposed to empathize with the main character unless it's someone you're very clearly not supposed to (like if the main character is a deranged killer or something...the Parker novels by Richard Stark come to mind). It's really hard to empathize with Bella, at least for me.
mugglelovrspew
Twilight is not my favorite series, but I do read it. I finally bought Breaking Dawn yesterday and just got to the part where Bella is drinking the blood. I think Breaking Dawn was a book that last night would not let me put it down. Once I got to where Jacob starts talking, I totally shut the book. I started back up again today, but it's been really annoying. I don't like Jacob; he just seems wayy to immature to me, and the werewolf thing really throws me off.

Bella gets on my nerves sometimes, but she is pretty interesting. Alice is my favorite, she's so fun and sweet; I absolutely love her! Rosalie drives me insane, and Emmett does too just because I hate when people tease me like he teases Bella. Esme seems like the perfect mom; she's so caring, and loves all of her "kids" so much, even though they're not hers. That's just my point of view of the characters.

As I've already stated, I really don't like Jacob, so I thought New Moon was a waste. Eclipse and Twilight are my favorites. Breaking Dawn I just want to finish! But, whose are your favorite characters?

And Eisa, I can emphasize with Bella on some levels, up to a point. Then, she just sort of seems out of it most of the time for me, if that makes sense.
Triad
I finished Breaking Dawn yesterday and I'm quite impressed! Twilight is my fav, then Breaking Dawn, Eclipse and New Moon. I didn't like New Moon so much coz Edward isn't in it for a large chunk. And I'm not a Jacob fan. I was until he decided he loved her and blah blah blah. I HATED him in Breaking Dawn, except for the very end. Selfish idiot. He really should have thought about what his actions would do to Bella. I don't like her either but since I can't be Edwards at least he has someone! biggrin.gif

Onto the Q's:

What are some of your favorite book quotes?

Pretty much anything Emmett says.

What is it about the Series that you found most disappointing or annoying?
I found it annoying that Bella was so good at being a Vampire. It was obvious she was going to be but I would have liked to have been surprised. Why couldn't she be more like a Newborn? It would have made it so much more interesting. I hate it when the main chick suddenly becomes brilliant. Back when I read Twilight I kept thinking that since Bella was so clumsy and plain that she was no doubt going to end up as good as Edward right away. So lame.
I also didn't like Jacob imprinting on Renesmee. That ticked me right off! I really wanted Bella to tear him to shreds. And with him telling Charlie Bella was back! OMG!!! I could have dived into the book and killed him myself!!!

What do you love about the twilight series (what was your favourite part)?
I'll have to re-read them to find my fav parts. I suppose any part with Bella wanting kill Jacob or Edward wanting to kill Rosalie or Edward wanting to kill Jacob. Yeah, any part that could have ended with either of those two dead was my fav! biggrin.gif

I really wanted there to be a massive battle. It sucked how she made it a peaceful ending. She could have at least killed off Jacob, Rose and Bella! And the Volturi. And the Romanians.....and Billy Black. Just a handful of 'nice people' deaths would have made the series more interesting.

She could have at least killed off Jacob, Rose and Bella! And the Volturi. And the Romanians.....and Billy Black. Just a handful of 'nice people' deaths would have made the series more interesting.

It did have that too perfect ending, but an ending where Bella dies would ruin the whole series for me...even if I don't care that much about her what about EDWARD!! it would kill him sad.gif. Rose um well I think her death would be kind of...um pointless...she has a part in Breaking Dawn, but I don't think the readers got to know her well enough to be affected by her death...The Volturi well it kinda goes with the whole good guys win... bad guys die thing I like that they live so it leaves further conflict with them to the imagination. The Romanians well they could die...it wouldn't effect anything at all really. Billy Black...I could see it, but I'd hope not I kinda liked him...I don't know why, he really wasn't very nice. I saved Jacob for last because I could see an ending where Jacob dies... she kept making allusions to Romeo and Juliet didn't she? So Jacob dieing would have made sense.

All right I'm done

Hey All! Sorry to interrupt the flow of conversation, but I came across this article and thought I'd share it with you. It is about Stephen King's views and opinions of Stephanie Meyer's and her Twilight series. What does everything think of SK's opinion? Do you think he's accurate in his descriptions of the series?

Okay, carry on! biggrin.gif
etphonehome
You know, I kind of have to agree with him. But then the measure of a good story in my opinion isn't the fantastic ability of the author but the story itself. That's what makes the Twilight series so popular I think. She wrote a nice story that touched people and never professed to be some literary genius. Mind you I could say that of some of JKR's writing. Some her plots have been fanciful at best and downright awful at their worst. I remember back when DH came out someone comparing her opening chapters something akin to fan fiction!

But at the end of the day, Stephenie Meyer invented some characters that people feel they have ownership of in the same way that people feel some kind of ownership over Harry, Ron, Hermione and the rest. I can't remember ever feeling any attachment to any of Stephen Kings characters or in fact ever feeling any kind of anything other than that they are just plain weird! But he's a tremendously popular author whom I admire. The trouble with the article is, it's not complete so who knows exactly what he did say, that's the trouble with online articles, you never get all the facts.
Eisa
Yeah, I wish I knew all of what Stephen King said about it and if he had mentioned the specific problems he had with Stephenie Meyer's writing. Of course...I can't help but agree with him (and not just because he's my favorite author wub.gif). I don't think and I never have thought that Stephenie Meyer can write very well.

You have a point, etphonehome, but I think that you can still do that with his characters, too. It's just that young adults/children/teenagers don't typically read Stephen King, I don't think (or at least, I always felt like I was kind of weird for doing so! tongue.gif ). His novels can appeal to everyone, but a lot of the messages and themes are more adult-oriented. And I know I'm still attached to some of his characters, like Roland, Eddie, and Susannah in the Dark Tower series and most of the characters in The Stand, as well. Usually, in all of his novels, there is at least one character I identify with or empathize with.

Not to digress too much...blush.gif But yes, I can see his point. And yes, the ability of the story plays a factor, but for a story to be brilliant, in my opinion, it needs to be written well. And to me, Stephenie Meyer didn't really manage that in Twilight.

I also find it interesting in the article that he brought up the reason that people like the series so much is because the romance/sex is unthreatening. I think that is one of the good points of Twilight actually, that it is portrayed in a non-threatening light, and that's how it should be in real life and in fiction. It is nice to see a series where the main character who's a girl isn't expected to be a tramp, you know?
hot-for-harry
Maybe Stephenie isn't the best writer of our time, but he's also got to think about the fact that it is written from a seventeen year old girl's perspective, and normally when people are just thinking, they don't use huge words or anything. The Host by Stephenie, was very well written and sounded a lot smarter and more professional. You can't just look at one series and decide how good an author is.

I realize I never answered the questions!

What are some of your favorite book quotes?

Pick only a few lines from the books? Can't.

What is it about the Series that you found most disappointing or annoying?

Either when she found she loved Jacob, Jacob himself, or the happy, happy ending. Somebody should've died, because I don't even think Disney saves all the characters! Maybe a minor character, like Sue Clearwater. I don't count Irina, because of how insignificant it was.

What do you love about the twilight series (what was your favourite part)?

I loved when she decided she'd stay with Edward and they got married. (That is the type of wedding I've always dreamed of.) But any time when Edward was being over generous and showing how very much he cares for her. Take your pick from the series tongue.gif !

I can't choose characters that I really liked, but I can choose the ones that annoyed the heck out of me. Leah Clearwater. Geez, she was so rude to Bella and never supportive. Poor, sweet Seth had to grow up with that. Then Jacob, in some of Eclipse and 90% of Breaking Dawn. In his book in BD, he was always so mean and annoying and trying to kill everybody.

I was poking around on another forum and I found another article that's kind of interesting. It says what a lot of people have said about Twilight: "How Twilight is Destroying America and Harming Our Nation's Youth"

Thoughts on this? I think the title is rather melodramatic, for one. tongue.gif
mugglelovrspew
I can't not agree with Stephen King said. And I have to agree with some of what that article said Eisa. I mean, I think most people realize it but sort of ignore it that he is really abusive to her, and I know it's because he's a vampire. I think that since vampires have some sort of "seduction quality" that that's the only reason Bella's staying with Edward. The series just sort of scares me, you know? Like I wouldn't want to be in that situation and it really is just like Bella is brain-washed.

I feel that's the only thing I ever agree with Jacob on, like he actually has sense in his mind. And Rosalie does to because she doesn't like Bella and it sort of makes sense. It's weird and confusing in my mind.

I accidentally skipped upon the comment of Jacob imprinting.... now I got to go finish reading dry.gif . Also, does anyone else think Renesemee or however you spell it is the stupidest names ever?
alkisti
I haven't posted in this thread before but the article Eisa posted got me tickled.

Why is it that every single time something becomes successful there will always be protests about "giving the wrong message"? Harry Potter, Twilight, Barbie dolls, whatever. Even Pokemons were considered bad! I mean why can't they just sit in their little corner and deal with their own life? They're making things up and dusting Freud's theories in order to sound "scientific" and give some truth to their accusations.

Seriously, am I the only one who read Twilight and focused on the story and not on the sexistic part? Can't we read a book for the fun of it without having to decipher the story? Why doesn't nobody critisize Crime and Punishment? It's about a guy who kills and tries to get away. Shouldn't this be banned? There is another book by Dostoyevsky that talks about gambling and how a guy spends all of his money at a local casino, and ends up a millionaire. Is it forbidden? No. Because it's "high literature" and "we can not touch whatever is considered classic or art".

Personally, I don't give a penny what those people say. Twilight might be the most anti-woman book in the whole world for that matter. It makes no difference to me, as long as it makes me happy reading it. smile.gif
Lulu-lolo
I totally agree with you alkisti. Stephenie Meyer might not be the worlds greatest author, and if you analyse it, you can find some "wrong" messages. However, I enjoy it because I think it is a great story. If I wanted "high litterature" I would have gone with something else. Stephen King might thnk she is a bad author, but she s selling great nonetheless. Her writing is not complicated, but it tells the story and that is what's important. And by my opinon, Freud is not a subject in modern litterature and shouldn't be used to analyse it with, unless it was the intention of the author.

Alkisti, I agree with everything you say!
Triad
I agree with this part -
QUOTE(article)
Edward tells her she is "so interesting ... fascinating", but the reader looks in vain for his evidence.

But I suppose for a Vampire, someone whose mind he can't read and who doesn't seem afraid of him or his family would be somewhat intriguing.

QUOTE(article)
In interviews, Meyer claims that the theme of the Twilight saga is choice, because Edward chooses not to behave as his nature impels him to. Alas, the only choice Bella gets to make is to sacrifice herself in ever-larger increments. The book opens with her martyrish insistence on going to stay with her estranged father in Forks, Washington so that her flighty mother can go travelling with her new boyfriend. Once there, she swiftly takes over the cooking, cleaning and laundry for her father, and then we follow her through innumerable other acts of servitude and self-abnegation as she becomes more and more obsessed with her beautiful, bloodsucking boyfriend, culminating in the moment when she tells her friends and family that her plans with Edward have been cancelled (shortly before they head off to be alone together for the first time), so that if he does lose control and kill her, he won't be blamed. She's not Buffy, she's Patient Griselda, always spin-drying.
Couldn't agree more with this.

and this:
QUOTE(article)
It sounds melodramatic and shrill to say that Bella and Edward's relationship is abusive, but as the story wears on it becomes increasingly hard to avoid the comparison, as she gradually isolates herself from her friends to protect his secret, and learns to subordinate her every impulse and movement to the necessity of not upsetting Edward and his instincts ("I could quite easily kill you, Bella, by accident"), until by halfway through she is trying to suppress her very pulse ("my blood was racing and I wished I could slow it, sensing that this must make everything so much more difficult") and planning her movements like a chess game - "I worried that it would provoke the strange anger that flared whenever I slipped and revealed too clearly how obsessed I was." Whenever she responds physically to his kisses, he immediately draws away and berates her. Supporters will call this the erotics of abstinence. I call it fear and distaste for female sexuality and a poisonous message to be feeding young women.

I don't agree that it's sexist because some pathetic women out there do this. Meyer is just showing a different side to women, big deal. Sure she cold have made her more of a relatable character but eh, whatever sells books right?

QUOTE(article)
Edward is no hero. Bella is no Buffy. And Twilight's underlying message - that self-sacrifice makes you a worthy girlfriend, that men mustn't be excited beyond a certain point, that men with problems must be forgiven everything, that female passivity is a state to be encouraged - are no good to anyone. It should be staked through its black, black heart.
I'm wondering is Meyer is one of those women who has dinner on the table for her husband the moment he walks in the door, who does every tiny little thing because she is the women and that's her job. Lucy Mangan makes very interesting points in her article. Most can't be denied when you look past (how brilliant the story is) and focus on the underlying points. Same with every other book out there, if the fans of those books care to look.

In reality all these articles against Twilight do is make people interested. They want to read for themselves to see if what thearticle says is true. Very clever in my opinion.

As for Stephen Kings comments. For a guy that write mostly horror he can't really talk. He has fans like my Mum who is in her 40's. I'm sure he'd love to have fans the ages that Meyers books hit. Jealous much? I think so. I'll agree that Meyer is no JKR but how can you compare Vamp to Magic? Book book series have underlying messages and as someone said above me - everytime a book comes out that people dive on and can't get enough of there's always someone out there desperate to make the book look bad. At the end of the day do you think Meyer cares about what Stephen King says? Or what Lucy Mangan write? No. She as created a world we all want to live in and we as fans don't and shouldn't give a darn what these critics write. I've said before that I agree with Mangans points but that won't stop me from reading and re-reading these books for the next few years.

One thing I don't understand is how come SK comments on Twilight. Who asked him? And if a journalist decided it would be interesting, why did they think so? huh.gif

I like some of SK stories, and to be honest, I have never read one full book. I have a book with short narrations in it, but no complete big stories. I may not be the best to comment on his work, but he is not the greatest author either. Neither is SM, nor JKR. What all three of them do well is tell nice stories their own personal way. As Triad said, maybe he is feeling a tad jealous. Maybe his next story will be about vampires as well? laugh.gif

Thanks lulu-lolo. smile.gif
Eisa
Well, alkisti, why would he want to do that? He's already written a book about vampires! laugh.gif 'Salem's Lot. It's about as far removed from Twilight as you can get, I think...more akin to Dracula.
alkisti
Really? huh.gif
Well, as I said, I am not a big fan. I have to read that story, especially if it is more like Dracula. Maybe he's a little bit angry that his vampire story was not that successful? Teenage love and drama sells more than cruel blood-sucking creatures which are the complete opposite of an Edward Cullen. And maybe we have had enough of that and really needed to make vampires...modern. wink.gif
Eisa
Yep. *nodnod* He wrote it in 1975...so it's been around a while. Here's the Wiki for it That has the plot summary and all that.

I think it was really successful...I guess maybe it would just be because of the difference between the two? Stephenie Meyer definitely has a very different take on vampires and vampire myths!

Okay, SM does have a different take on Vampires, and I think that's part of the reason that people like, other than the fact the Edward's supposed to be gorgeous. It's not all horror blood-and-guts vampire, it's more like "they're people too" vampire, if you understand what I'm saying. I really want to see how I would react if Twilight was created before HP; I like the complex story line in HP, and I think that Twilight's is too.... simple.

I don't pay attention to the sexist part that's in it, because there seems to be stuff like that in every book if you analyze it like that. I mean, seriously, get a grip.

Anyway, does anyone else think that Bella's too OOC for a new-born in Breaking Dawn? She's too serene like they say, but I do think making Bella perfect just sort of ruined the book for me so far. I can say that I'm sort of glad Bella attacked Jacob because he imprinted on Renesmee. He deserved it, and it made me mad. It is because I don't like Jacob though. And Bella still seems like a clutzish prone person, doesn't she just a tad?

I'm in complete agreement. It was as if Meyer just wanted to end the books and not have to go through a year or so of Bella being thirsty. So lame. I would have liked a 5th book. One thing that really bothered me about her being so perfect was jumping from the widow and Edward telling her that even for a vamp that was graceful. Why couldn't she have fallen out and been her original self? that would have been funnier!
Sirren
I haven't contributed in here for a long time, although I've been reading up following all the posts. Having waded through pages of opinions, I feel compelled to share mine.

I really enjoyed Breaking Dawn, but not without a few irritations. Triad hit on my major beef: why did Bella have to be perfect? Personally, I did not want to go through the blood lust with her, but why did becoming a vamp remove all her imperfections? Bella is clumsy. We are lead through three and half books of Edward striving to keep Bella safe from ... herself, and =poof!= Bella is perfect. I hated that.

I wanted a big fight scene with the Volturi. I didn't actually wish to see a myriad of deaths, but a mental battle? It rang of cop-out while I was reading it. I mean, come on.

I'm still ambiguous about Jake imprinting upon Renesme. Yes, I think he needed to be part of Bella's life, but I found it creepy. SM did give us a taste of this book two, but Jake? I didn't like it at all.

I, too, would like to see a fifth book. I don't feel as though the story concluded. Off Edward and Bella go to their cabin in the woods with Renesme. What else?!
Half-blood-princess
ok
abit of a rant going on here now

its still about the books
but abit about stephenie meyer aswel.
you see i go to yahoo answers
and there is SUCH a... controversy (sp?) over stephenie and the whole books.

they think her writing is childlike and the base line isnt that great

WELL

is stephenie meyer's writing is child-like, well she is an incredibly grown up child!
yes is really annoys me too that bella gets everything even at the end (im sorry.... you just dont get that many people and end up with no fight! jeesh.)

thats my rant.
ive read the books like a bazillion times haha (i can't get to sleep at night... i get bored... biggrin.gif)

thats about it!

Okay, I agree with everything you just said... with the exception of twilight being too simple... I mean yes, Hp is a lot more complex than Twilight's but, that didn't bother me when I was reading.

I totally agree with not paying attention to the sexist part, IMO people are quite touchy about things these days these days...or just looking for reasons to criticize popular things

I agree with what Sirren said too
