dont you just
HATE people who think their Harry Potter fans just because they've seen the movie? and ONLY seen the movie? you hate all those people's guts SOOOOO bad! when ever i mention hp then someone says "oh yhea! i LOOOVE harry potter! those movies were great!" i just get
sooooo pissed! then i like, tell them off so bad. i mean, i just get REALLY steamed at people like that. they think they know everything about hp just because they spent $75 to stare at dan radcliffe's blue(not green, that gets me p.o.ed to) eyes for 10 hours stright. Grrrrrrrr.....
MOD EDIT : Firstly, I'd like to welcome you to the forums!! I suggest you have a good read at our forums rules here and here before posting further. Double posting (and triple posting too, mind!!) is not allowed. If you'd like to add something, just use that magic "Edit" button to edit your post. Another thing, the use of netspeak in the forums is not allowed. I have edited them out this time but please be more careful in the future. For more information on what is considered netspeak and what isn't, click here. I have deleted your second and third posts, this is what they said:ok. sorry, i will.
oops! sorry, i dont know if you're alowed to say pi$$ed here. ummm. sorry if we're not. i didnt mean to! sorry!
(MOD EDIT : Well it's not exactly foul compared to other words but if you could replace it with another word, that would be much better)a copple more things i get REALLY steamed about in the hp movies besides the ppls who, well, look up^^^:
the casting! i cannot BELIVE how badly they cast harry! i mean, dan has BROWN hair, and BLUE eyes! ARRRGGGHH!! also, the first two movies were, o.k., but the third one, man. i cried after i saw that. well, i WOULD have if my eyes hadnt gottne totaly fried. i mean, what was with all that flashing? i seriously want to THROTTLE arfonso! seriously, it seemed like he preaty much just had his assistnat give him a 2 sentnece summary of the book rather than evan look at the cover! really, this isnt the kind of bookmovie where you can be all "creative" as a director and mangle the story to bits! this really means alot to alot of people. i'm disapointed that Jo didnt stick up for her manuscript more.

Well we all have our diffferent opinions. My friends like HP, but they only read the books and watch the movies. I still classify them as HP fans.

Mar 14 2005, 03:59 AM
well, T.F.L., if they read the books, and liked the books, i too would classify them as a HP fan, and if they saw/liked/didnt like the movies is irrelavent. the only thing that materes is if they liked the books. now if they read the books, saw the movies, didnt like the books, liked the movies, then i'd classify them as a person who like the movies, but i would still be civil to them. my deffaniton of a hp fan is someone who liked the books. the reason i despise people who call themselves fans just because they liked the movies is because the dont know what harrypotter really is. you just cant get from the movies what the books give you.

I totally agree. My friends do that (watch the movies and think they know di ck all about HP) and it drives me off the wall!!

I seriously think that the movies have got NOTHING compared to the books. I wasn't really obsessed about the first two movies in the first place, but the third one was a totally different calabur of SUCK! (however i will admit that I do love Rupert Grint cause he's an absolutely BRILLIANT Ron) I honestly believe that if you haven't read the books you don't even have a right to be TALKING about specific details about HP.
P.S i'm new so don't go totally rank on me for not being a huge HP movie fan

sure people are going to act like that.

its their lose if they'd rather watch the movies then accually read the book. but you can't really blame some people. have you thought that maby some people don't really anjoy reading??? probably the only reason i ever picked up a harry potter book was because my friend told me how cool it was. the first book really bored me. so i quit a little before i was half way though. then i saw the movie. i loved it! and thats what made me want to read all of the harry potter books. but i guess that would be pretty anoying.......

veelachick, you're soo right! now, i do have a friend who's never read the books, but seen the movies, but she dosent act like she has memorized the entire series. i concider her a good person to discuss the movies as movies with. and yes blondie, i know some people dont like to read, but if they dont then they shouldnt be calling the themselves a fan of a book , and a long one at that. i have another friend who is trying to finish GOF before the movie comes out, and i respect that, because i understand that HP can be a difficult read for people with short...oh! shiney object!*runs off to fallow shiney object* (tee hee)

I must say there is people like that who just because they hae seen the movies they know it all.
But then you get that with people who have read the books. If you dont come on forums and websites you dont know everything there is to know. Ok so the sites are made with info from the books. but there is other ways to look at it and if you dont come and talk about it you dont see the same things. It mad to think what i didnt know before coming on to the web for hp info.

I agree with Oliver, there shouldn’t be any snobbery on either side of the Harry Potter Fandom.
I love the books but at the same time know very little about the movies. So generally speaking I don't really contribute to the Movie section of the Veritaserum Forum at all, while sticking to book discussions and lounge.
I love the books and would most definitely urge anyone to read them (generally with little effect), whether they like the movies or not, but ultimately its there own prerogative whether they do or not.
But I still would never assume that I’m 'more' of a Harry Potter fan or have more right to contribute to the Harry Potter Fandom than a person who watches the movies.
There’s definitely enough room with in the vast array of Harry Potter Fandom on the Web (and with in Veritaserum to comfortably accommodate all Harry Potter Fans whether they like the books, the movies or both.

I agree that you can be a fan either way...but to say that you are an expert on HP just because you've seen the movies is shooting it. Granted you don't have to love both (god knows i don't) but there is a limit to how much you can say you know. I guess my point is that i'm a fanatic beleiver that you haven't EXPERIENCED HP until you've read it

**raises hand** Me! Me!!
Yesh... I can say I'm a fan of LotR but haven't read the book yet. Okay, I've tried to read them but it's such a *thick* book and my time is rather precious at that time. By the time I have more free time to leisurely read fiction, I'm hooked to Severus/Hermione fanfic... so, heh...

IMO, there's nothing wrong to claim yourself a Harry Potter fan even if you haven't read the books because I think the movies have their own attraction themselves that the books cannot provide. For instance, to be able to listen to the magnificent Alan's voice as Snape, or to grasp the cuteness of Dobby flapping his ears in motion (I mean, *I* don't think Dobby is cute if I only read his description in the books) and c'mon... spit it out... who here do not think Harry himself is very hot/cute/adorable/'makes my heart melt'/'makes my knees weak/whatever if they didn't watch the way Daniel Radcliffe played him??
Don't constrict your mind to see one view, widen them and look around. You'll be surprise with what you'll see...

Just some food for your thought!

lol....point taken.

But...and this is just my opinion...i read both HP and LOTR before i watched the movies and i think that the LOTR movies added to the LOTR experience for me, while the HP movies (sorry to say it) kinda took away from it. K maybe not....the first two were good but POA movie *** me off and i obsessed about it for weeks. Granted....if you're a screen writer you have to alter things that were in the book (exhibit A: LOTR-TTT) but i thought they butchered the story and characters. I mean my *FAV* characters in POA is Lupin and Sirius and I felt that there was very little character developement for either characters. They didn't really get involved in the relationships between lupin and harry, sirius and harry, or lupin and sirius. That just frustrated me to no end!!

o man guys! you're killing me lol

I understand that it's quite daunting to look at LOTR and sit and read it, but once you get into it...it's DEFINATELY worth it. Same as the movies. Once you get into the story and you fall in love with the characters it's like "how did i live without seeing these movies?" OK maybe that's a bit extreme but it was like that for me

*blushes* i'm a bit of a fanatic but I'll stop now. lol

Granted. There are different types of HP fans but I think that if you are a...I don't want to say true but....hardcore HP fan I think that reading the books is a must. Yes and that was done by me. The thing is if this thread was kept within hating people who watch the HP movies and call themselves fans, then there wouldn't be much room for discussion, would there? I mean, how much could you rant on about it without eventually touching the same points again? So I thought it'd make more sense if I edited this thread to discuss pet peeves in general, other things members hated about certain people could be discussed here too.
And besides, if I didn't, we'd probably be getting new threads every other week titled "Don't you just hate people who are never punctual?", "Don't you just hate people who talk with their mouth full?" and "Don't you just hate people who like *celebrity* just because he's hot?"

I TOTALLY get that. I hate when people (and my experience is mainly with girls) lie about having a boyfriend or making out with some guy or something. I honestly don't think its a big deal if you don't have any....for lack of better words...sexual experience at the age of 16, 17...or any age for that matter. IMHO I don't think anyone will look at you differently if you haven't. And another thing...when little fourteen year old girls (no offense to anyone who's fourteen and does this) dress about in these skin tight pants and tight shirts that are suppose to show cleavage.....but all you see is flatness because they aren't developed yet. It's like...why do you feel the need to pretend to be all sexy and why do you have a craving to date an 18 year old who is obviously trying to get in your pants?! I honestly can't comprehend the reasoning behind that. And HELLO! I was fourteen 2 years ago and i don't remember doing that! It's crazy.

Do I hate them? Not all of them, but I don't like those who makes theories based on the movies like some people who's supporting the Ron/Hermione theory, they give evidence from the movie, not the book, that ticks me off a bit...
My sisters don't have anything to do with hp and they come in the common room to chat. It gets annoying time after time. There should be a rule that allows ONLY Hp fans who are true hp fans to come and chat. I wouldn't be so badgered if they didn't get me banned every other month or so, and I wouldn't mind much if they only just stop bugging in on the hp discussions, kicking me off, and come on, seriously, I just don't like them for that.. other than that, most hp movie veiwers are okay, but they aren't real hp fans, but they are fans.

| well, T.F.L., if they read the books, and liked the books, i too would classify them as a HP fan, and if they saw/liked/didnt like the movies is irrelavent. the only thing that materes is if they liked the books. now if they read the books, saw the movies, didnt like the books, liked the movies, then i'd classify them as a person who like the movies, but i would still be civil to them. my deffaniton of a hp fan is someone who liked the books. the reason i despise people who call themselves fans just because they liked the movies is because the dont know what harrypotter really is. you just cant get from the movies what the books give you. |
Well, just one of my friends like harry potter...
my other friends have just read one book, but they think they are big harry potter fans!

I don't consider people who have just watched the movie HP fans, but only a couple of mates have just seen the movies, and they don't think either. they just say, 'won't say i'm a fan as i haven't read the books, although i love the films' so that's cool.
And avrilluver, what you said in the beginning, I agree with you, i'm no fan of Daniel Radcliffe, i don't think he's that great at acting, i mean, how many kids wanted to be Harry? Loads i bet, they could have found someone with a bit more talent, and who looks like Harry, although to his credit he is getting better

sorry if i annoyed any Dan fan's but it's what i think. the rest of the cast are fab though. But what you said sabout the third movie.
PoA movie
Rocked! it was by far the best movie of the three. I want to kiss alfonso on the lips, I will love him forever! The first two were ok, as far as movie adoptations go but were pretty cheesy i must say. But PoA, Me and all my mates came out of the cinema flaberghasted and the immenseness of it! It was so dark and so good!!!! and Gary Oldman. *druels slightly* as well as david Thewlis, who is a fantastic actor, also Alan Rickman. It was those guys who
made that film
I was really nervous because of the first two and PoA is my favourite book, and i was not disapointed. Wow! I've seen it a fair few times now as i have it on DVD and it still gives me goosebumps. In fact it's one of my favourite films ever, better than return of the king which was
Too long! Sorry.
As you seem to be on the topic
And as people who lie? Grrrrr! Also people who stop talking to mates because of guys. Ummmm what? A girl i know, isn't talking to a mate of mine because my mate went out with this guy this other girl fancies. They're no even that close. And today she wacked my mate of the head! for like no reason! crazy, so i glared at her. Grrrrr!

I wouldn't be so badgered if they didn't get me banned every other month or so, and I wouldn't mind much if they only just stop bugging in on the hp discussions, kicking me off, and come on, seriously, I just don't like them for that. |
*shudderes and cringges* OHH yhea!!! that is just one of the main things that i end up cussing people out for and getting banned form some chats.

i mean, in my mind, the movies have abosoultely
NOTHING to do with the books. it's really a shame it had to be that way, cuz i bet if they were really well done, you could've gotten at least a better jist of the story, but they only created these idiots who basicly think this is a movie serires and it's all up to the director/screen writters and infest all the fan communic`a with people like that. ygraine, i can understand people with different movie tastes who would like poa like it best as a
movie but in relation to the book? neuhuh. he RIPPED THE STORY APART!!!!! so, in conclusion, you want to kiss arfanso, i want to strangle him.

Oh so that's what you mean! I was thinking who couldn't have liked that movie.
yeah in relation to the book it wasn't that great. I didn't get him seeing Pettigrew on the map, i mean huh? But that was the only thing taht bugged and confused me.
But when i went to see it i tried to seperate it from the books, because i know i'll just end up getting disappointed. Also they have to switch some thing around because of time, and they're only based on the books i supose.

Hannah! calm down! lol.
Its true, people who only watch the movies and comment on 'book theories' shouldn't really comment. The movies at times are different from the books, they are put in to a different point of view or approached in a slightly changed way to what you expected it should be like from the books, but I don’t agree that the movies are nothing like the books. I mean they do the best they can with what they have, in a book you put your own imagination into it, no one can capture that on the big screen no matter how good you are. But yeah, when people make remarks and know absolutely nothing about what they are talking about, I hate that, I almost certainly do it but I still extremely dislike it!

yhea, its sad but that's what these people have turned it into. i mean, now a good comparason would be, like: there are about a million romeo and juliet movies, right? but they are all really different from the play, and no where near as good, i mean, just immagine the differences between that! what we are having to endure is worse than a bunch of shakespear buffs watching a rom+juli film festiavel!
about the looking at it out of context as just a movie; as i said, weather it was your favorite as just a movie really depends on your taste in movies. i personaly didnt like it much, evan just as a film on it's own, but mhe, i can understand someone who would.

Two words... Anger Managment. Joking!
No, really I agree with you guys. You cannot call yourself an HP fan if you have only seen the movies. Its like cheating. You just don't do it.
When I bought GoF when it first came out, the person who checked us said that she hadn't read any of them, but was going to start with the 4th one and go backwards.
I just gave her a weird look, she had a couple of loose screws if you ask me.

DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED! ok.....what!? oh man....i can't go through this again.....if you want to know my opinion on POA just go to the topic that talks about it (i don't know how to link so can't help you there) but it's all there....and i have very strong opinions so sorry if i offend anyone.

hahah took the words right out of my mouth. What is up with Dan Ratcliff and his lack of ANY acting skill?! oh man you guys got me all riled up! Dan is a bad actor period. He's not getting better (at least in my eyes) and cannot imagine what was going through the minds of the casting directors when they said he was capable of starring in this movie that would have a HUGE fan base! disappointment is not even scratching the surface of what i'm feeling about that.

ok....i agree but to a point. but in POA there was very little in common. I mean if they changed the characters names and titled the movie "Bob And Wand" people wouldn't even know that it had anything to do with HP. I'm over exaggerating obviously but you get the point. And all I have to say is Lord of the Rings. While still adding and subtracting scenes, the genious Peter Jackson did an amazing job at putting LOTR on screen and still managed to please much of the LOTR fan base. obviously not everything was completely satisfactory (like faramir *grr*) but you can't have everything. However in the case of POA I felt like i got nothing. i dunno if that made any sense but i'm just so fired up i can't speak english right. anyway i'm going to stop writing before i punch something
MOD EDIT : No netspeak please. That's "o" and "k" in case you're wondering. How much more time would you need to type that one more alphabet eh?! Please be more careful next time. Thanks. Your post has been edited.
