Prolouge: Payment

"Pathetic, Draco. You and I both know that you are only here out of fear. None the less, you still tracked down the last horcrux that the Potter brat never found. Then again, your dreadful mistake almost cost me my life. For this you will pay. I expect you remember how your father paid for his mistake?"

Draco looked up from his kneeling position at the Dark Lord's feet. Beads of sweat were forming on his forehead.

"Scorpius." He whispered.

"Correct, Draco. Very good. But, there were other ways your father had to pay as well. Crucio!" Draco screamed with pain. It was the worst pain he had ever felt in his life, even after paying for his other biggest mistake, letting Snape kill Dumbledore in his 6th year. The pain was unbearable, searing, up and down his body. He could hear the evil, merciless laugh of his master. He could hear Dumbledore's voice, saying the words he heard over and over again every time he was forced to do some vile, horrible task for Lord Voldemort.

"Come over to the right side, Draco..." Why hadn't he? He regretted it more and more with each passing day, ever since the night he had escaped with Snape. He wasn't a killer. Dumbledore was right; murder isn't nearly as easy as the innocent believe.

Draco screamed and writhed with pain as it got harder and harder to bear. Voldemort was increasing the intensity, not yet satisfied. It seemed the pain had been going on for hours, even days, though Draco knew it couldn't have been more than 20 seconds. The pain ceased as quickly as it had come.

"My Lord, please! Not my son, anything but my son!" He begged.

"How dare you question the plans of Lord Voldemort!" He yelled. "CRUCIO!"

Chapter 1

Scorpius sat in front of the Slytherin common room fire, awaiting his father's apearance. It was two o'clock in the morning, and he was tired. Finally, after minutes of waiting, Draco's pale face appeared in the flames.

"Scorpius..." He said with a worried look on his face.

"Father," Scorpius acknowledged.

"Scorpius, the...the Dark Lord has a...has a task for you." He stuttered, obviously not wanting to say what he had to.

"What? Lord Voldemort, you mean?" Scorpius questioned.

"Yes," Draco said, still wincing at the name, even after all these years.

"I thought he was dead!" Scorpius exclaimed.

"Scorpius, please, keep your voice down. Someone will hear..." Draco looked more anxious than ever. "Yes, most people believe that the Dark Lord is dead, but he has survived by his last remaining Horcrux that was never found. He made it is soon as he found out that his others were being destroyed, and hid it in a very safe place that I happened to know of and go often. I performed the magic to give him back his body and his powers."

"Where?" Scorpuis's eyes were huge with intrest.

"I cannot share that information with you." said Draco. "Now, the Dark Lord requests your service."

"What am I to do?" asked Scorpius.

"He wants you to...to find a way to get the captured Death Eaters out of Azkaban. And...and to find a way to let them into Hogwarts," Draco cast a nervous look over his shoulder.

"I'll do it!" Scorpius said, with an eager look on his face. "How long do I get?"

"Until the end of the school year in June." Draco said. "Scorpius, I beg of you, take this seriously! I had the same oppertunity at your age, older even, and my job was exceptionally easier. I could not pull the task off, and I paid dearly for that mistake." There was a pleading look in his eyes now. "Please, do not wait to start this, for it will take all year. Go tonight to the library and look up information on Azkaban. Find all the secret passageways into and out of the castle. Do better than I did." Draco cast another look over his shoulder. "I've got to go." And with that, he left Scorpius wondering in front of the dying fire.

Chapter 2

"I've told him, my lord." Draco said, kneeling at Lord Voldemort's feet. "He is very grateful for the...oppertunity."

"As he should be. Did you tell him that you are forbidden to help him?" Voldemort asked.

"My lord?" Draco looked up.

"He must do this alone, and you cannot help him. If you do, I will know."

"But, my lord, he is only in his 5th year-" said Draco.

"Yet again, you question me!" Voldemort shouted. "Crucio!"

Draco tried to fight the pain, to keep his senses about him. There must be a way, some way, to help Scorpius. He could not let him have the same fate as he did. He could ask someone to help Scorpius, but if the did the impossible tasks for him, then the outcome would not be good for Draco or Scorpius. He had to find a way of communicating with him and he had to learn Occulemency as soon as possible. He had to find a person inside of Hogwarts that could help him. Help both of them. Help them out of this horrible mess. Someone he hadn't spoken to in years. Someone with powers the Dark Lord knows not. Love, and hopefully, forgiveness.

Sorry it's so short, but I thought that was a good ending for it. I'll try to post the next chapter tonight to make up for it being so short.

Chapter 3

Draco knocked on the door to the headmaster's office. I have to do this. It's the only way. He kept telling himself, but he was still quite unsure. And if Voldemort ever found out...Draco shuddered at the thought.

"Come in." Came a voice from behind the think oak door. Draco took a deep breath and pushed the door open.

"D-Draco?" Harry said, standing up.

"Harry." Draco said, holding out his hand. Harry looked at it as if it might be about to bite him. He shook it cautiosly.

"Sit down," Harry said, and took the opposite chair across the desk. "So tell me, why are you here?"

"It's...It's about my son. And...You-Know-Who."

"Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself." Harry said.

"About...V-Voldemort." Draco stuttered.

"What about him? You know as well as I that he is dead."

"No. There was another Horcrux- just one more- And I...I brought him back," Draco said in a whisper.

"You can't have." Harry said. Draco pulled up his left sleeve to show Harry the heavily outlined Dark Mark residing there. Harry just stared.

"Why are you here?" He whispered.

"I regret it Harry, all of it. I was young and I didn't know! Running off with Snape that night I realized that I had made the wrong choice. Harry, please, please help me."

"With what?" Harry asked, his voice barely audible.

"He wants Scorpius to do as I had to do, to pay for a mistake of mine. He wants him to break the Death Eaters out of Azkaban and get them into Hogwarts. He can't do it, Harry. I need your help!" Draco explained.

"So you want me to help you break death eaters out of Azkaban and let them into my school?" Harry asked increduously.

"No! Of course not. I need out of this, Harry. I don't want to follow Voldemort anymore. I don't want the same fate for my son."

"You truely regret it, then." Harry asked.

"Completely." Draco said, his voice in a pleading whisper once more.

Chapter 4

"Let me get this straight before I give my answer." Harry said, staring into the ice cold eyes he knew so well. He realized with a jolt that they were the exact same size, shape, and color as his son's. "Voldemort made another- Oh will you give it a rest!" He shouted at Draco flinched at the name. "Voldemort made another horcrux that was never destroyed, and now he is back. He requires an impossible service of your son, and you wish me to help you both out of it. You are truly repentent." Harry said, his bright, green eyes never leaving Draco's cold, blue ones.

"Yes." Draco said.

"Prove it."

"But how?"

"Let your son love the one he choses." Harry said slowly.

"Sir?"

"Let him love the Muggle-born Gryffindor he has clearly fallen for." Harry said. "Don't try to talk him out of it, orforbid him to see her, as I know you will. Let him love who he choses."

"I-I will." Draco said. It was quite obvious he had never known there was a girl in his son's life, much less a Mudblood Gryffindor. But he would have to get over that if he wanted Harry's help.

"Then...I will help you and Scorpius, Draco. He cannot know, for he would never go along with the plan. I know young Slytherins much too well. They think that they greatest oppertunity in the world would be 'To help the Dark Lord.' Especially when his two best friends are Lestrange and Dolohov's boys. Their fathers may still be in Azkaban, but that makes no difference to them." Harry stopped at the look of utter bewilderment on Draco's face.

"A Lestrange and-and a Dolohov?" He asked quietly.

"Yes, I'm afraid so." Harry paused. "And they've learn quite a bit from their parents.

Draco stared at Harry. This would be much, much harder than he could've thought.

Eyes Like Ice
Chapter 5

Arabelle glared straight into Scorpius's icy blue eyes. The hatred raging through both of them was phenomenal. Arabelle noted that his cold, harsh eyes were the same, size, shape, and color as his father's. His father, the one who had made her life so miserable. The one who had gotten her Muggle-born parents locked up to die in Azkaban. Under false charges! Only Arabelle knew the whole story. Draco had hated Arabelle's parents because they were both Muggles with magic. So he killed another Muggle and framed her parents. But Arabelle knew that it was because they weren't pureblood.

Scorpius stared into Arabelle's beaufitul hazel eyes. He saw how they faded from brown to green in the middle. Looking into those eyes, for the first time he wished he was a Gryffindor. He instantly shook himself of the thought and kept on with the raging battle of burns and comebacks.

"Well at least myfather's not locked up in Azkaban!" Scorpius instantly knew he had gone too far. Her eyes shining with tears, Arabelle pushed past Scorpius and ran down the hall. The small crowd cleared, the Slytherins congradulating him and the Gryffindors glaring. He tried his best to get away from the people so he could go talk to Arabelle. He ran down the hallway, peering into the doors of empty calssrooms and calling her name. Finally her found her, in the old charms room at the end of the 5th floor hall. Her eyes were red from crying, but the tears had stopped coming.

"Arabelle, I'm so, so sorry." He said, stepping into the room.

"Go away." She said.

"Please listen. I really am sorry. But...but..." He was about to say something along the lines of, "But I love you and I can't let you know, so I'm mean to you instead!" But he realized that that would ruin the whole, "Can't let you know," thing.

"Your father may not be in Azkaban, but he is the reason that mine are." Arabelle said.

"No! Arabelle, If I tell you something, will you promise never to tell anyone, ever, no matter what the circumstances are?"

"I guess...but why-" Arabelle began.

"The reason my father did that is not because he hates Muggles, but, well, because..." Scorpius lifted his left sleeve and Arabelle gasped and slid towards the floor.

Chapter 6

"Arabelle?" Scorpius called. "Arabelle?!?" He was alamed now. He tried shaking her and calling her name again. "Arabelle!" His voice was pleading now.

"Scor?" He could hear his friends coming down the hallway looking for him. He pointed his wand at the door and yelled "Colloportus!" with such force that there was a deafening screech when the lock clicked. It didn't matter; he knew if his friends found Arabelle like this, they would cast a horrible jinx on her while she was defenseless.

"Arabelle! Please, please wake up!" Scorpius yelled.

------

Arabelle could hear Scorpius's voice. It sounded miles away. "Arabelle!" He pleaded with her to wake up...

The darkness threatened to take her over again. No. She had to get up...she had to tell Scorpius she was okay so he wouldn't worry...She couldn't move, she couldn't think, she couldn't feel. But she had to...

-------
"Arabelle! Please...Please!" Scorpius said. After 10 minutes of calling her name and shaking her, praying she would wake up, Arabelle's eyes fluttered open. Scorpius got up and lifted Arabelle into his arms. She laid her head against his chest and said, "So he's back then?"

Chapter 7

"You have the mark." Arabelle said.

"Yes."

"So you are one of his followers."

"Not...not exactly, no." Scorpius said, grimacing slightly.

"What?" Arabelle asked, a questioning look on her face.

"I am. But...I don't want to be." Scorpius said. "I only did it because I knew what would happen to my father if I didn't." Scorpius stared into space for a few seconds. "He's givin me a job to do. He's hoping I'll die in the attempt, and that'll be my father's punishment for messing up. He did the same thing to him and my grandparents. He gave my father a hopelessly impossible job, knowing he'd die trying and he knew it'd kill my grandfather to lose him. It's sick, really."

"Yeah...yeah that is." Arabelle said. "What...what is it that he asked you to do?"

Scorpius looked into her eyes. He knew that trust was not an object anymore. "He wants me to get the Death Eaters out of Azkaban and get them into Hogwarts...without help. I wasn't supposed to tell you any of that." Scorpius looked back into her eyes. "But I know I can't do it. And...I don't want to."

"Well guess what. You're getting help whether you want it or not. We're going to get you out of this." Arabelle said.

Chapter 8

Arabelle's eyes flew open in the dark dormitory. She sat up, sure she'd heard something.
"Hello?" She called. The window flew open and a jet of light shot through the window before she could scream. She was paralized; someone had hit he with a body-bind curse. she struggled against it, but she couldn't move or utter a sound. Someone jumped through the window and grabbed her. For a moment she caught her kidnapper's eye; blue and colder than ice. So familiar but different in every way.

~~Later~~

Arabelle eyed her wand, 9 3/4 inches, cherry wood, dragon heartstring. It was only a few feet away. If only she could reach it. She struggled against the ropes that held her against the chair. It was a wasted effort.

"Told you has he?" A high cold voice said. It echoed off the walls.

"What?" Arabelle said. She knew it would be horrible for all involved if he knew that she knew.

"Don't play dumb, silly little girl."

"I-I don't know what you're talking about!" Arabelle said.

"Oh. Perhaps maybe this'll jog your memory then?" The voice sneered. The owner of the voice came into view. Pale and snakelike, just as she had been told. "Crucio!" He yelled, and before she knew what was happening, a horrible, searing pain ripped through Arabelle's body. It covered every inch, from the very tips of her fingers to the very tips of her toes. She screamed and writhed, but movement only seemed to make it worse. Suddenly the pain was cut off. Breathing heavily, Arabelle noticed that she had knocked the chair over and was starring at the ceiling. She could only see out of the corner of one eye, for her long dark hair was swooped over her face. She shook it out of the way.

"Do you remember him mentioning it now?" Voldemort said.

"N-No!" Arabelle stammered. She wouldn't give in to him. She was stronger than this.

"I think you are lying. And I don't like liars." Voldemort sneered.

The pain burned through her again, like knives cutting into her skin. She screamed and heard Voldemort's hig, merciless laugh.
No. She would not give him the satisfaction of hurting her. She bit her lip, trying to stifle her screams. She bit down harder and harder until she started tasting blood. Again, the horrible pain was cut off. Arabelle laid still, her mouth filled with blood. The chair was tipped forward and she was upright again. The sudden movement made her dizzy and the salty taste of the blood mixed with the horrible pain made her want to throw up.

"You know." Voldemort said. Arabelle said nothing. "I cannot have that." Arabelle looked up. "AVADA KEDAVRA!"

Chapter 9

"NO!" A voice yelled. It caught Voldemort by surprise and he moved his wand; the spell missed Arabelle by a quarter of an inch. The ropes binding her exploded and Arabelle lept out of the chair. Strong, familiar arms caught her and spun her around. Scorpius set her on the floor behind him. "Run!" He yelled at her. "Get out!"

"But--"

"Go!"

But Voldemort had locked the door. There was no escaping.

"Accio Arabelle!" He said. It was like there was an invisable force pulling her towards him. She struggled against it but nothing worked. Voldemort caught her and pointed his wand at her heart.

"Don't do anything to her!" Scorpius yelled. "I'll--I'll fight you if I have to!"

"Oh yes, because I've very afraid of a wandless 15 year old." Voldemort rolled his bright red, snakeish eyes. "I'm sorry, Scorpius. I was under the impression that you were working for me." He shot a worried glance at Arabelle. She shook her head with the littlest movement imaginable, undetectable to someone not watching extremly carefully for it.

"I-I am, my Lord." He said.

"Then why, might I ask, are you so concerned about this Mudblood?" He asked.

"Mudblood? You told me you were a pureblood!" Scorpius yelled at Arabelle.

"Why on Earth would you've cared to save this Mudblood liar then, Scorpius?"

"I thought spilling magical blood was a waste." Scorpius said.

"Yes. Indeed it is. Well, since there's not one drop of magic in her dirty blood, why don't you do the honors then, Scorpius?"

Scorpius looked at him in absolute horror.

"Better yet, why don't you take after your dear great aunt Bella! It'll make the show more....entertaining. Oh yes that's right, Scorpius! What better time than now to learn such advanced magic as this? Go ahead, try to put the Cruciatus curse on your dear little Mudblood friend."

------
Note: I forgot to say that Arabelle never lied to Scorpius about being a pureblood. Scorpius made that up to cover up him liking her.

Chapter 10

Arabelle gave a little nod. It was the only way. He'd have to do it, and she'd have to endure it. There was no way out.

"C-c-crucio," Scorpius said, just above a whisper. Nothing happened, but Arabelle didn't expect it to. You had to mean unforgivable curses, and Arabelle knew the last thing Scorpius wanted to do was cause her pain. She would have to fake it. She jumped backwards, knowing that the first time he tried the curse would only cause about that much to happen.

"You can do better than that!" Voldemort yelled.

"C-crucio!" He said. Arabelle fell to the ground with a small scream. She did not get up.

"Try again!" Voldemort said.

"Crucio!" Arabelle screamed and twisted with pain that didn't exist, carefully keeping her eyes on Scorpius's wand so she would know when to stop faking it. She screamed and writhed and tryed just to concentrate on Scorpius's shaking hand, and not meet his eyes. But she did, and was heartbroken looking into them. They were glittering with tears, and it made her start to cry by thinking about how much it must hurt him to do this to her. If only there was some way she could let him know...

-Scor's Point of View-

Scorpius's eyes burned as he tried to hold back the tears he knew were trying to come. It was too much for him, that he was causing her pain like this. He had been crucioed before, by Voldemort when he first learned about his job. He screams got louder as she twisted and squirmed on the floor.

"Stop." Came Voldemort's malatious voice. Scorpius lowered his wand. Arabelle laid still, her breathing labored. "Get up, stupid girl." Voldemort said.

Arabelle pulled herself into a sitting position, tear tracks visible on her red face.

"Kill her." Voldemort said, a hint of total carelessness in his voice.

Scorpius looked into her eyes. They glistened with fresh tears. "Scorpius...Scorpius please!" She whispered. It took every ounce of energy he had to raise his wand. This was the last thing on earth he wanted to do, but Arabelle had givin him clear instructions when he had told her. "If it will save you, leave me behind, let me be killed or tortured. If you can save yourself by leaving me I beg you do it." They had argued for over an hour but Arabelle made him swear he would. And Scorpius knew they would both be killed if he didn't kill her.

He raised his wand and said the two hardest words he would ever say in his life.

"Avada Kedavra," he said, below a whisper. A jet of green light flew out of the tip of his wand and hit Arabelle square in the chest and she fell over backwards. Voldemort stalked out of the dimly lit room, leaving Scorpius and Arabelle behind. Fresh tears poured out of his eyes and down his face, soaking his shirt and Arabelle's. He had just lost the only person he had truely loved.

Chapter 11

Scorpius looked down at Arabelle's paralyzed body. The tears he had been trying to hold back were flowing freely now. He starred straight into Arabelle's frozen eyes, chocolate brown and still beautiful, but missing the light and sparkel that used to reside in them. He didn't look away until he felt a hand on his shoulder.

"Father?" He asked, not believing it was really his father that could be standing there.

"It'll be alright." He said soothingly. Scorpius could not find his voice so he just nodded. "Don't worry. You'll find someone else. You just need some time." Draco enveloped his son into a hug. "I'm so sorry." At this Scorpius looked up.

"You're not sorry!" He said. "She's a muggle-born. Why would you care?"

Draco looked taken aback. "I--"

"What's the difference beween her and every other muggle-born? You call them mudbloods, you lock them up in Azkaban! Why is Arabelle different to you?" Scorpius stood up. "You never cared about her, and you never cared about me." And with that he stalked out of the room, leaving Draco, his father, the one he had always hoped would someday understand, shouting his name behind him. He pushed open the heavy wooden door and stepped out into Hogsmeade, where the sun was just beginning to rise. He didn't know what he was going to do, and he didn't know where he was going. But one thing was for sure. He wouldn't be returning to Hogwarts. He took three steps forward, and without thinking about what he was doing, he turned on the spot, concentrating as hard as he could on three words: Anywhere But Here.

Chapter 12

Scorpius opened his eyes. He was standing in the middle of a street, not unlike Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley. But the shops were different, and despite the early hour of the morning, there were people already bustling about. He saw what looked to be a hotel and walked into it.

"Welcome to Anywhere But Here! Are you a runaway student from Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, or Durmstrang?"

"Yes, Hogwarts, but I'm not going back! You can't make me!"

"Of course not, of course not. I'm guessing you'll need a room and some food?" The woman behind the counter asked. Surprised at not being forcebly apperated back to Hogsmeade, he agreed and followed the woman.

They were rounding the first flight of stairs when the woman spoke. "I bet you're wondering why anyone would ever name a town, 'Anywhere But Here.'" Scorpius shook his head. "Well when young runaway wizards started showing up in the middle of nowhere we decided they needed a place to go. We, being me and my sister. So we founded this little town and named it Anywhere But Here. I was only a fifth year when I left, and her a seventh year."

"Why'd you leave?" Scorpius asked.

"There was a dreadful teacher there--Umbridge. Wish I would've stayed though, heard they fed her to the centaurs." They were at the top of the stairs now, and the woman opened a door. It led to a hallway full of more doors. She opened the third one from the end and led Scorpius inside.

It was a small room, a little cluttered. It looked nice enough, though. Scorpius sat down on the bed. "I'll send Lee up with some food." She was halfway out the door when she said, "I'm Katie, by the way. If you need anything just say it's name out loud. It'll appear right in front of you." The second she closed the door, Scorpius knew what he was going to try to do.

"Arabelle!" He said. And a girl appeared right in front of him. Dazed, confused, and very much alive.

Chapter 13

"Arabelle! You're--you're okay!" Scorpius said.

"We have to get back." Arabelle said.

"What?" Scorpius said, confused. "Oh. No! I'm not going back! We can stay here."

"You have to go back! You have that--" She looked around the room. "Job, remember? If you don't do it, well, things'll be very bad.

"So you're telling me that I should help--Voldemort--come back to power!?" Scorpius yelled, carefully whispering the name.

"No! I have a plan." Arabelle said calmly.

"What about you? He thinks you're dead and...I--I can't do this without you, Arabelle."

"I know. I have a plan." She said for the second time.

"Would you mind filling me in, then?"

"Listen. Your dad and Headmaster Potter are doing the same thing we are--trying to get you out of this. I heard them talking. Potter came shortly after it all happened. I heard it all. And, they're probably freaking out just now because my "dead" body just disapeared right in front of them. But that's not the point. Potter has a plan, and a very good one. I heard all of it. Well, almost all of it. He said, "We have to get the--" And then I was brought here. We need something, and Potter and your dad know what it is. They are both convinced that I am dead and that you want to do this. Do you see the problem there?" Scorpius nodded. "Well, my plan is--" Arabelle started, but she was interrupted by a loud bang, a crash, and a scream coming from downstairs.
