Chapter 1
The Rose and the Thorn



Lily Evans sat under her favorite tree on the Hogwarts ground, when all of a sudden that familiar crowd began to gather around the tree under which James Potter always sat. Lily rolled her eyes and thought, "Ugh, not again." She walked over to the tree to see what was going on.

When Lily arrived on the scene she found Potter making fun of Severus again . "Ugh," she thought again. "Potter, why can't you leave him alone for once!" she yelled.

"Evans, why can't you understand that this boy is existing!”

"So he exists. So what? You aren't any better than he is!"

"Evans, Evans, Evans you'll never understand."

"No, I guess I won't, but what I do understand is that you are a conceited prat that doesn't care about anyone except himself!" she screamed.

James then levitated Severus. "Whatever," he thought bitterly.

"Stop it!" Lily yelled.

"Or what?" asked James.

"Or I'll go tell the Head of House what you and your friend have been doing."

"Sure, run along then. The worst that will happen is my friends and I here would get double detentions." As he said this he motioned towards his three friends: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew.

"Ugh, you know sometimes you make me so mad!" cried Lily. "Just let him down," she said as calmly as she could.

"Okay, but just this once. If I see him one more time, it's off with his trousers."

Once James had let Severus down James smirked and Severus glared at Lily as if to say, "I didn't need your help."

Lily then went back to her tree and sat down to read her book.

Chapter 2

James Potter walked into the Great Hall with Sirius, and Lupin. Peter was "busy" doing some weird thing of his. James walked over to the Gryffindor table and sat as close to Lily as he could without her knowing he was there. He then started an interesting conversation with Sirius about the best way to taunt Snape without Lily noticing.

" Well, Padfoot, you know I never thought that the idea of pulling off his trousers was too bad."

"Prongs, I think that's beyond the point. You hate him because he exists and because he's around Lily all the time and she's always protecting him."

"Fine, yes that's true, but I've asked her a million times, but she still won't go out with me."

"Pff" Lily thought. "You know I can hear you."

"What!"

"I can hear you," she repeated.

"Every word?"

"Yep every word"

"O crap!"

"Prongs, it's all your fault. You were the one who wanted to sit here."

"Yeah, that’s true. You both know very well that I like her," James said in a whisper.

“Well you're going about it the wrong way," said Lupin tiredly.

"Then how am I to go about it if you’re so smart.”

Lupin frowned

"Please don't talk to me like that, Prongs, You don't like it when I do it to you, so don't do it to me," said Lupin seriously.
"Alright, Moony, I won't do it again," said James a bit gloomily because Lupin had ruined a bit of his fun.

"Well you should probably corner her somewhere when no one's around and then ask her," Lupin suggested.

"Ugh, but that just sounds so hard."

“Honestly, Prongs, It's not that hard," said Sirius.

"She left like, five minutes ago. She probably went back to the common room to grab here stuff for her next class. Why don't you go find her now?"

"Fine, I will. Just wish me luck, okay."

“Okay," said Lupin and Sirius together.

As James left the Great Hall, two gray eyes followed him out of the room.

Chapter 3
"Where's he going" wondered Severus Snape several moments later. "Who cares it's not like I really do anyway."

"Okay just calm down," James told himself once he was outside the Great Hall.
Lily walked right into him just as she was coming out of the common room and heading for the Great Hall with her books for her next class.
"Hey," said James.
"Hey, what are you doing here? You never come get your stuff before class."
"Oh, well I was just looking for Wormta, I mean Peter."
"I think I heard him in a couple empty classrooms from here. He was with a bunch of Slytherins so I didn't bother." Lily said a bit nervously.
"Oh, okay, thanks."
"See you,"
"Yeah"
On his way back to the Great Hall James chided himself for not asking Lily out. When he got back to the Great Hall he told Sirius and Lupin he hadn't asked her and what she had said about Wormtail.
"but why in the world would he be hanging out with a bunch of Slytherins?" asked James.
"Yeah, hey, Moony, no offense, but uh, you are the smart one here, can you help us?," said Sirius.
" The reasonable explanation is either Lily didn't know who was in there with those Slytherins or um, that's what I don't or can't figure out yet."
"Hmmm..."
"Dunno who it was then"
"Dunno"
"Well, anyway... about his trousers..."

Chapter 4

On the grounds, james, Sirius, Lupin, and Peter sat under that same tree they always did. But then James saw Snape.
Now, Lily had been watching both James and Snape. So, she walked over to the tree where James was now standing and walking towards Snape. Then she just started to try and comfort and calm him down.
"James, calm down. It's okay. He's not hurting or bothering anyone."
"Yeah, well, Evans you know what? I know he's not hurting anyone, but I hate him!!!"
"James, you've got to calm down or this'll just get worse. we've got one more year of school left. You've been at this since mid-term of first year."
"Evans, I know, but you're not my mum now are you?"
At this, Lily let go. He had hurt her. He had just cut deep. How could he? Once she let got her ran up to Snape and stunned him.
"No!"
James smirked from the tree where he was now levitating Snape.
"will you just stop it," Lily yelled as she ran over to the crowd that was now starting to gather.
"No, Evans, I don't think I will."
"why, give me at least one reason why?' she said as she walked closer to him.
"Because well," he thought for a moment," you hang out with him a bit more than I like it. Which has, obviously, made me jealous. And so this is where my anger goes."
"Potter, you know that's a lame excuse."
"No, I don't think it is," he said very casually.
"Put him down,"she yelled.
"No, I don't think I will."
Why?" she said furiously. "You make no sense."
Well, here's a better reason why," he said.
What is it?"
"I won't tell."
"Just shut up and put him down."
Not unless you go out with me."
"No," she said with fury.
"Hey, both you and him are very lucky that I haven't pulled down his trousers yet."
Oh God, I don't care just put him down."
"No!'
By this time James' stunning spell had worn off so Snape had just said Expelliarmus hen James noticed what was happening.
"You little rat."
"Accio wand ," Lily yelled.
Soon, she had James' wand in her hand, but just then James took his wand out of her hand and stunned Snape again. Just then Lily decided she had, had enough, she ran inside to go tell professor Dumbledore.

Chapter 5


"Lily, thank you for telling me this," Dumbledore said.


"You're welcome," Lily said enthusiastically. "I tried to calm him down, but then he said he wouldn't stop unless I went out with him. I do not want to go out with him."


"Secretly Lily, I think you do," Dumbledore said excitedly.


"What?" Lily choked. 'Sorry, Professor, you just shocked me."


"It's fine."


"Thanks. Oh, and by the way Snape's trousers are probably off by now," she said angrily.


"Oh, well, I'm going to have a talk with all of them," Dumbledore said nonchalantly.


"That might help." As she said this they walked through the entrance hall doors. The sight they saw was not pretty. There under the tree being levitated by James was Severus Snape, his trousers off.


As Lily walked out she knew she was already mad, but this made it worse.


Lily pulled up Snape's pants and let him down. A jet of red light flew from James' wand. It hit Lily square in the chest. Dumbledore then made James, Sirius, Peter let Snape down. He then re-enervated Lily.


"Why you little...."


"Lily, calm down. I want all of you in my office tomorrow during your free period," said Dumbledore seriously.


"Yes, sir," they all said in unison.

"See Evans, now you got all[/il of us in trouble."


"So, you don't get to torment someone just because you don't like them."

“Why not?"
"Because you have no right to, that's why."

James was silent. "I have[i] so got to ask her out," he thought

Chapter 6


James walked through the halls alone for once. With all the Quidditch fans he was hardly ever that way. When was he going to ask her out?


"It's honestly, not that hard," he told himself.

It just so happened that Lily was walking the halls, too. She peered around the corner to see who was there, for she could hear footsteps.

Yes!! She had timed it perfectly.


"Watch were you're going, Potter," she said as she started to walk away.

"Lily, wait!"

"Yes?" she said waiting expectantly.

"Can you walk with me for a minute."

"Um... yeah," she said; what was the worst that could happen?

He soon led here into an empty classroom.

"Okay, what's on your mind?" she asked eagerly.

"Well, um, I was wondering if you could, um.. well, would you go out with me sometime?"

She walked close to him so that they were inches away from each other.

"Yes, I would gladly do that," she said.

His arm snaked around her waist to pull her closer. She responded by putting her arm around him.

"Well, I gotta go," she said quickly. "Say, um, free period in two days."

"Okay," he said.

James rushed back to the common room. He couldn't wait to tell the marauders. He ran past a first year on his way in.

"Hey, Prongs! Anything new? You look winded," Sirius observed.

"Yeah. Okay, so, I asked Lily out, she said yes!" he said so fast that even the fastest talker would barely be able to understand him.

"James, slow down. No one can understand you if you talk that fast," Lupin said.

James took a deep breath. "I asked her out, and she said yes."

"Man, that's awesome!!"

"Hey, here she is now," Lupin said as Lily walked through the portrait hole, smiling.

"So, when are you two gonna go out?"

"Oh, yeah, um, in two days, on free period."

"Why two? You could just do it tomorrow, you know," Sirius said as he winked at a girl that walked by.

"You numb skulls we can't do it tomorrow. You've got that talk with Dumbledore," Lily said as she walked by.

"Well, what do you want to do now?" Sirius inquired.

"Well, I need to rest," Lupin said tiredly.

"Oh, yeah, tomorrow's full moon, I guess," James whispered.

"Let's just all go to bed."

"Yeah, sure sounds fine."

James went into the boys dormitories, pulled on him pajamas and got into bed thinking about Lily.

Chapter 7



As Lily walked in the Common Room, she winked at James and went into her dormitory to think things over. "Okay, so I just might've stopped the Potter/Snape issue, by taking up his offer on the date," she thought to herself. "But somehow, he's just not himself around me, but I like him. I like him a lot. Hmm...," she sighed. "Maybe I should tell Professor Dumbledore of my assumptions." As she thought this, she pulled on her pajamas and got into bed.

When Lily woke up the next morning she was up twenty minutes earlier than normal. She decided to go see if James was up and maybe she would be able to hang out with him for a little while.


Careful not to wake anyone up, she pulled on her robes and did her hair. Her hair was a redish brown and a bit curly. It straitened pretty well and was about six or seven inches past her shoulder. She had always loved it.


"Hey princess," James said as she sat down on the couch next to him


"Hey," she said nicely as she touched the tip of his nose.


"So, how'd you sleep last night?" he asked.


"Fine, you?" she answered.


"Awesome," he said as he stood up. Lily looked him in the eyes. They were a blue greeny color. They were pretty.


"So, how would you like it if you came to my place for the Christmas holiday? It's in a week you know," she asked.


"Sure. I think. I'll just have to make some adjustments first."


They sat back down on the couch. James put his arm around her shoulder and pulled her closer.


"I'll have to ask Padfoot to stay with Moony because he normally comes to my place and Moony goes to his parents' house.'


She laid her head on his shoulder and sighed.


"Couple of lovebirds, I see," Sirius said as he came down the stairs.


"Padfoot," James said sternly as he glared at him.


"I'm just teasing. I'll leave to two alone now because it just so happens that I forgot to do Dumbledore's essay.


"Sure," James said sarcastically.

"Hey, James! I, oh," Lupin said as he came down the stairs. "I promised Padfoot I'd help him with his forgotten essay. Oh, and tonight's you-know-what, so I've got to get all my work done before then."


"Yeah, so..."


"So... do not Jack around with me today," Lupin said sternly.


"Um, he's got a secret that no one knows about except you, Sirius, and Peter? Correct?" Lily asked curiously after Lupin had left.


James sighed and was amazed at how she had figured that out. "Yes."


"Off that subject. Er, while we’re here we may as well spend as much time together as we can," Lily said a bit romantically.


"Sure, but we've got that talk with Dumbledore during free period," James said.


"You know, I'm glad you asked me out."


"What do you mean?" he asked confused.


"I mean you must really like me," she said.


James sat stunned for a moment. "Well, yeah, I always thought that you were, I don’t know, my type."


Lily giggled. That was pretty funny.

Chapter 8



James lay on his bed later that night playing 'Wizard Chess' with Sirius.

Hey, Prongs, it could've been worse," Sirius said.

James wasn't listening. All he could think about and hear was Lily downstairs. I shouldn't go down there, he thought.

"I know, but still all four of us got double detention," he said sadly, still listening to Lily's laughter downstairs.

"Hey, it's almost time to take Moony out," Sirius said.

"Oh, crap, yeah, we better go."

James and Sirius leapt off the bed and headed down stairs.

"Hey, Moony, you ready to go?"

"Yeah, but this is not going to be pretty," he said gloomily.

"Did you get all your work done?" James asked, looking at Lily. He winked at her. She just giggled.

"Sure did."

Just as they left a pair of bright emerald eyes followed them out of the room.

"Where'd you...oh," she replied finally getting it.

"Well we're off to bed," Sirius said tiredly, "Come on lover-boy!"

"Me too," Lily agreed.

Chapter 9

"I have a few announcements to make," Dumbledore said as he smiled at the class. The whole entire class perked up and got quiet. When Dumbledore had announcements they were going to be good. "We are going to have a little ball for the Sixth and Seventh years." Even more chatter filled the room. Guys were a bit more perky, girls were just plain excited.

"I am so asking Lily," James said to Sirius.

Lily sat on the front row day dreaming. She was dreaming about James asking her to the ball and lifting her off her feet into his arms and…

"Lily, Lily..." Lauren, her best friend said.

"Huh?" Lily said cluelessly.

"Hello, are you on planet Neon or what?" Lauren asked, crossing her arms.

Lily stuttered, "Oh, um, sorry… I… er… James. I was just thinking about-"

"about James I know," she said obviously irritated.

The bell rang. James decided he would see if he could catch her then. He waited for all of the students to file out of the abnormally dark classroom. The many trinkets on the walls and chalkboard made this his favorite class by far. He caught her just as she was leaving.

"Um, Lily, I was wondering if you would want to go to the ball with me?" he asked insanely nervous. He glanced around the room and caught sight of a note under a desk.

"Dumbledore left by the way. And yes, James, I would be happy to." He picked her up and spun her around, then pulled her to him and kissed her. The touch of her mouth on his was warm. He just embraced the moment.

"Well, you better order your ball stuff and I had better order mine," Lily said casually. They walked out the door hand in hand. James had not one other care in the world.

"We better go to the owlery and send in our orders."

"Her dress is beautiful. It's green and really compliments her eyes," James was telling his friends later that night.

"I'll bet it is. Oh, Lupin and I aren't going. Lupin's too tired. It's tomorrow night and I'm catching up on some homework," Sirius said bored. "I have help," he said more excitedly.

"From who?"

"A girl," he said nonchalantly looking around the room.

"Is she hot?" Lupin asked even more bored sounding.

"Yes, you actually think I would pick someone to do homework with who wasn't? You're crazy," he said watching James give him the thumbs up.

"Well, you better get to bed," James said.

Lily laughed. " You are so weird."

"Night, Sirius said.

She laughed again. She went up to James and kissed his cheek. She ran her hand through her hair nonchalantly and asked," How long do you think you'll love me?"

"Forever and always."

"Can't wait 'til tomorrow night," Lily said. "My dress should be here. It'll be so fun!"

The thought that kept flashing through her mind was, 'What if Severus is there?' She dreamed about it all night. Then finally drifted into a fitful sleep.


That's the end of that. I hope that was okay. I don't know. I seriously want you guys' honest opinion. I'm sorry if it was kinda short.
