I'm quite surprised that there isn't already a thread about Terry!

Well I have to say I would recommend Discworld to anyone who likes Harry Potter.

Actually I wanted to share the hilarious article I found^^

Funnies!!!

That's so cool! I personally would vote in favour if they held a referendum on whether to rename Britain as Ankh Morpork!
Has anyone seen the televised versions?

I think it might be helpful for you to post up a bit about what the Discworld books are about. A little something about the main thread of the stories, the author, the characters etc would be helpful for those who haven't read them and might go some way to encouraging people to read them.

I love the Discworld series! biggrin.gif

Hmm, how to describe them...*puts on thinking cap* They're basically comic fantasy. And they're kind of satirical, but you can read them as just humorous, too. Some of the main characters that come around a lot are Rincewind, a wizard who hates to be a hero or the main character in anything--he would much rather run away (he's the biggest coward laugh.gif)--but he ends up stuck in the middle of things anyway; Sam Vimes, the commander of the police who's a very good policeman--he doesn't stand up for all the politics and intrigue; Vetinari, the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, basically the city leader and a very wily kind of person; Death, who's the living personification of...well...death tongue.gif; Death of Rats, which is the same thing but for vermin--they're both interesting characters in how they view things; Susan, who is Death's daughter somehow and has some interesting other-worldly powers; the Witches, including Nanny Ogg, Granny Weatherwax, and Magrat Garlick--they can do magic, but it's never what anyone expects; and the Wizards, of whom Rincewind would belong to if he had any real magical talents whatsoever.

The stories kind of wander all over the place. Main conflicts usually occur with the Auditors, these beings that think that humans are way too "messy" and prefer to deal only in reality. There are also some conflicts with the Gods, who most definitely exist and like playing games with the characters as pawns.

You can look here for more info on the books

So yeah, I love Discworld. wub.gif I think my favorite book is either Jingo or Monstrous Regiment. I love all the twists that happen in that last book. Polly is a brilliant main character!

I also love the Discworld series!
I started to read it when I got soul music for my birthday! The first time I read it I thought it was a bit strange and hard to get into, but it captured me anyway and the next time I read it I really got into it, Since then I've tried to find books by Terry and I hope that I will be able to read the whole serie.
One thing I like very much is that you find new things every time you read one of his books, you never know what will happen exactly and they're not like any other books I've read before.
My favourite is still Soul music. smile.gif

Was one of the books made into a TV adaptation that was screened in the UK last Xmas? I can't remember what it was called now, but the mention of the wizard sort of triggered something. I like Terry Prachett as an author generally, but never read any of this series, is it worth it?

I think it was The Colour of Magic. I know they did the Hogfather as well though.

I personally don't like Terry Pratchett's books. I tried The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents (Discworld) and after the first two pages I was bored of it. I find the books to be quite strange actually. wacko.gif
I haven't got anything against Terry Pratchett though, I think it's a shame about his illness.
