His Lily

The 31st of October 1981

Severus screwed up his eyes against the rush of cold autumn wind as dead leaves leapt up from the hard earth and tangled themselves in his untamed hair. His breath came in short bursts fogging the air in front of his mouth before it was snatched away from him and torn apart behind him. His legs burned and his stitch sent shards of pain searing up towards his shoulder but he mustn’t stop, he couldn’t stop.

Flashes of the conversation that had taken place mere minutes previously still haunted his mind. The Dark Lord pacing about a dark room, lined with Death Eaters, with his snake draped around his shoulders where she hung hissing protectively. Severus had been standing in a corner, beside Bellatrix and Narcissa, listening intently to the conversation watching the ball of filth on the middle of the floor with utmost disgust.
“I…I said I know where they are…” it squeaked feebly,
Severus’s eyes narrowed as he bit his tongue hard and felt blood seep into his mouth. He had to fight the hardest he could ever remember fighting to remain motionless and keep his face from reacting as he watched, unwilling, as the sack of rat dung betray the Potters to his master, not only the Potters, but more importantly Lily, his Lily.
The Dark Lord glided forward Nagini hissing venomously,
“Where?! Elaborate Wormtail or I shall pry the answers from your festering mind and I assure you they will be the last thought it ever thinks.” He hissed murderously.
Severus clamped his hands tightly behind his back and stared at Wormntail with all his might willing him to remain silent, to keep the valued information he had been poorly trusted with secret, as he was expected to, as he must. His eyes bored into the back of Wormtails balding head but to no avail,
“It was a Fidelius Charm!” Wormtail wailed throwing himself at the Dark Lord’s feet who’s face lifted into an evil sneer.
“Yes…and you have been most brave and loyal of all my servents…you will be greatly rewarded of course…you know I am a most grateful master…after all, you must not think of it a betrayal but merely a presentation of information that was asked of you. It would of course have been rude…to deny your master what he asked for so kindly.”
“y-yes master.” Wormtail sobbed into the carpet,
Severus felt his fists ball into tight knots as Wormtail coughed and spluttered the whereabouts of Lily and her family. How could one person ever be so self-centred and selfish?

Sweat poured down Severus’s face as he fought the urge to run from the room. She needed to be warned, even now she could be sitting watching some muggle rubbish with no idea that her life was coming to and end. Severus clenched his teeth and tried to suppress the shudders. He was here for a reason and he must stay until it was safe for him to leave or he could find his life and many others being snuffed out. It wouldn’t matter much though…his life…strangers lives…it would be like insignificant birthday candles being blown out in the glare of the sun, the sun, of course, being Lily.
He could actually feel the tension in the room as every head tilted slightly to catch the location and the Dark Lord leaned over Wormtail his face contorted with concentration as he tried to untangle the words falling out of Wormtail’s mouth. Severus felt the fury rise in his stomach forcing bile up his throat, closing his eyes tightly he swallowed and tried not to make a noise.

The Dark Lord suddenly straightened up; a look of triumph on his face, Severus had not seen that look for a very long time and had forgotten just quite how much it scared him. He forgot for a moment why he was shaking and sweating but nothing could keep Lily’s face from his mind for long and she burst back again redoubling his tremors. He needed Dumbledore…but they weren’t dismissed yet…he had to send for him…but he had no owl.

The Dark Lord smiled around at his ring of followers his red eyes sparkling maliciously.
“My friends…my allies, thanks to Wormtail here,” he kicked him, “we have….after months of waiting…finally…a heading.”
The Death Eaters erupted into applause and stamped their feet on the floor.
“Alas!” The Dark Lord cried raising his hands, “This is not something you may accompany me on. I must fight this enemy alone.” He said and his followers bowed their heads. Severus, however remained stiff as a board, something that did not go unnoticed by the Dark Lord. He swept over to him and inspected him his eyes boring into Severus’s. He thought desperately of something other than Lily and managed to fix his concentration on a spider hanging form the ceiling inches above his Master’s head. It wasn’t working, he could feel Lily on the edge of his mind threatening to burst into glorious colour…no, he was in control, he told himself, he was in control.
“Lucius.” His Master said clicking his fingers. A young man with long blond hair stumbled out of line. “Take Severus to your house and make sure he stays there…he does not look well.” With that the Dark Lord swept his eyes once more around the circle before gliding to the door and launching himself out into the evening air. Severus glared at Lucius who had put a hand on his shoulder,
“He’s right mate, you do look a bit peaky. C’mon, we’ll look after you.”
“I’m fine Lucius.” Severus snapped, he could already feel the panic driving everything out, his eyes flickered to the windows and single door desperately, already the clock was ticking. The other Death eaters had all began to hurry towards the door and he could here them disapperating on the other side. Lucius looked hurt but did not lower his gaze from Severus’s.
“He told me to take you home so that’s what I’m going to do. Its my neck on the line. Now move it!” Lucius said taking Severus’s arm and motioning for Narcissa to leave. She hurried from the room.
Something in the middle of the room let out a low groan. Severus’s head cricked as it snapped towards the noise, Wormtail still lay in a snivelling, moping lump on the floor. The rage and fury rose up like an uncontrollable beast inside him, he stepped around Lucius and was already halfway towards the little ****, pulling out his wand before he realised what he was doing and who was watching. He turned to see Lucius staring at him oddly.
“What are you doing?” He asked looking from Severus’s face to his wand to Wormtail.
“Nothing.” Severus said stuffing his wand back into his pocket grudgingly fantasising about cursing Wormtail into the next generation but then she reclaimed his attention and he, once again, had difficulty trying to suppress the now manic panic that was threatening to boil over at any second. He had to act.

He made a decision in that split second and swept to the door a relieved looking Lucius followed. He hurled himself out into the gathering darkness and dissaperated before Lucius had reached him. He could see he terrified and enraged face in his minds eye but focussed instead upon the address Wormtail had whimpered.

Now he was running along the road past the church in Godric’s Hollow his breath tearing up his throat and tears streaking his face as he feet pounded the cement. Faster, his head screamed, faster, faster! He drew his wand as he ran and raising it above his head sent a silver doe streaking from its tip. As it danced away behind him in the direction of Hogwarts he thought he heard a small child scream. He painfully doubled his pace. A small boy skidded around the corner in a pumpkin suit with a look of horror on his orange face, sweets spewing form his bucket he ran screaming down the road. Severus pelted around the corner and his eyes widened in terror as he saw green light suddenly blaze out of the Potter’s lower story window. He ran like a mad man down the remainder of the road thinking up ridiculous plans to thwart the Dark lord if there was even the slimmest chance she might still be alive…but then he would still need a plan if she wasn’t-
No…he couldn’t think of that. That possibility was unthinkable. A world without Lily Evans?
He smashed his way through the gate and unhinged door. Potter lay dead at the foot of the stairs, he leapt over his still body and pounded up the stairs where he could here his master telling Lily to stand aside…to give him the boy. Lily was screaming so much Severus could hardly hear his own unimportant thoughts but it acted like a drug to him and he leapt the last few steps and span about to make for the open door.
“LILY JUST GIVE HIM THE B-” he all but screamed but the last part of his sentence was drowned out by a colossal explosion that blew the door off its hinges and into the wall of the corridor. Severus staggered and fell to the ground. No. He dragged himself up and ran to the room. The Dark Lord was not there, a gaping hole in the wall was threatening the collapse of part of the ceiling and a little boy was crying in a cot on the far side of the room. None of these things mattered to him though. What held his complete and utter attention was the form lying limp on the floor, half concealed by rubble. Her red hair splayed out in a mess of loose curls and waves. Her beautiful emerald eyes were open and staring, horror plastered all over her delicate pale face.

Severus stumbled to her as if in a trance and collapsed by her side. He pushed the debris and beams of timbre off her with new found strength and pulled her into his arms, cradling her in his lap. He looked down at her face that lay on his chest and closed her green eyes tears falling thick and fast from his eyes. He didn’t even notice them, how could he when he was remembering all those times Lily had helped him back up when he had fallen off that ridiculous red muggle bike she had tried to get him to learn. How she had told him he looked like he was trying to fall off on purpose and how they had laughed. They had been so young, nine or ten? And then in their second year when they had spent one afternoon down by the lake and Lily had found a drowned mouse. Severus had told her not to go near it, that it would probably have all sorts of diseases but she insisted on fishing it out and having a funeral for it and everything. He would never forget the way her hair shimmered as the sunlight bounced off it or how her eyes had always used to light up whenever she saw him in the hallways at school or how he had made her tear streaked cheeks smile and dimple when her family cat had died after being hit by a car or how she had always stood up for him when in difficulties with Potter or how…how he had never told her he loved her.
“I love you Lil,” He forced between his chattering teeth as he stroked the strand of hair off her face. How could the world have done this to him? Taken away his love, his life, his Lily?
