Dear Muggle Prime Minister,
I suppose you would want to hear about this new idea that I recently had. I work at the Ministry of Magic, in the Department of Mysteries, which deals with unknown aspects of magic; such as death, prophesies, the human mind, and the question of purity of blood. Most wizards don’t like to think about these mysteries, so we Unspeakables think about them for the rest of the wizarding world. So, enough about me; I should get on with it.
You see, at the moment I have been working on the question of blood purity. Now I think an explanation is necessary here, too. Wizards who have been born of two magic parents (a wizard and a witch) are pureblooded. Wizards who are born to one Muggle, or non-magic parent, and one magic parent are half-blooded. Wizards who are born to two Muggles are muggleborn. This is very rare.
Sad to say, some wizards believe that Muggles are worthless just because they can’t do magic. This is wrong and prejudiced of them, so please don’t be offended, Mr. Prime Minister. This group of wizards used to kill Muggles for sport, and many unprejudiced wizards fought these murderous people. This ended when Harry Potter killed Voldemort. I am referring, of course, to the dark days when Lord Voldemort was in Power. I believe you have learned about this from our Minister, so I won’t go into detail there.
The wizards that supported Lord Voldemort, and Voldemort himself, also believe that muggleborn wizards are worthless because of their parentage. So muggleborns were hunted as much as Muggles during those dark days. Now that they are over and Voldemort has been defeated, we at the Department of Mysteries feel free to research the reason behind this hatred, and what blood really means. We are trying to figure out what the parentage of a wizard really means. Why do people care so much about whom we are born as rather than what we grow up to be?
I and several other Unspeakables have been looking into this for about a year and a half now. We have tested muggleborns, purebloods, wizards, and half-bloods in the same test for magical skill. The scores vary, but we have concluded that blood has no influence over test scores. We have researched famous wizards of different blood statuses and have concluded that the great things they have accomplished were in not because they were pureblooded. We have studied the growth progress of children of all statuses, including Muggles, and we have concluded that all human children grow at an average rate, no matter what their blood status. Also, we have made family trees of the blood status of several families, wizard and Muggle. The study of genetics shows that there must be something in the DNA which makes a person magical, but when wizards and Muggles intermarry the genes of the child are not always consistent with the parents. Often the genes skip generations, so if your grandparents are Muggle and wizard, you might be magical, or your parents might be. The obvious conclusions are:
-- Blood status does not make a difference in the characteristics of a person;
-- Families must have mixed blood so that wizards do not die out;
-- Prejudice against Muggles and muggleborns won’t accomplish anything.
So it would be much better if wizards stopped seeing themselves as superior to Muggles, and developed a tolerant and understanding relationship with them. Every wizard has Muggle relatives, however distant, and vice versa for Muggles. So we must see each other as brothers and sisters; for after all, every human being has natural equal rights.
So my dear Muggle Prime Minister, pass this information on to the rest of the Muggle population. I am sure that it will be a shock at first, and that it will take some getting used to, but I can wait. We have plenty of time to undo the misunderstandings that became set more firmly in our lifestyles under the rule of Lord Voldemort. Together, we can undo all that, and wipe it away from history.
Yours sincerely,
Gina Atkinson, Unspeakable,
