Full Version: Magic Only In England?

I've been wondering, why hasn't JKR talked about any witches or wizards from the US or from Asia being able to perform magic? Is it, only in the Harry Potter world, that magic only exists in England?

My personal theories are that JKR focused it on England, which is where she lives. This isn't a fault. It's just a personal curiosity. She makes it seem like the only witches and wizards are located in England! Well, what about Hogwarts? If there were other witches and wizards in other countries, do you think they could've gotten letters from Hogwarts too? If so, they would have to fly all the way to England just to attend Hogwarts!

What are you guys' thoughts?

That is a good question....and yes I would also tend to agree with you, at least on the why of it.

In all honesty, I think that she also implies that there could possibly be other schools beyond Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and Beauxbatons. (sp?) My reasoning is because China has one of the longest, richest histories and Europe too but not as much. It's not a total leap of logic to presume that perhaps there are some pockets of magic outside of england.

And if Hogwarts had to house all the wizards and witches of the world, they would be a lot bigger etc etc.

At least, that's what I think.

That seems like a very good theory, Sinsdaemn. Still, there are many mysteries behind my question. The way that JKR described the magical world made it seem as if magic was only in England. Well, if there were magic in other places, the chosen people who received the letter would have to leave their real home and fly to England for 10 months, and then fly back, wouldn't they? It just renders the whole thing as a hard fact.

Some girls in other countries might have been chosen for Beauxbatons, and some boys for Durmstrang as well. Others would have been lead straight to Hogwarts. But those three schools are only in England. There aren't any other branches for the schools in other countries, are there?

Quotes from HP Lexicon:

QUOTE

Q: Can American kids go to Hogwarts ? (Kelly)
A: No, they have their own school. You'll find out in Book 4. Hogwarts just serves Britain and Ireland.

A school in Brazil from which Bill Weasley had a penfriend(GF7)

Durmstrang Institute
Headmaster: Igor Karkaroff
Location: a castle in northern Europe, far enough north that days are very short in winter.

Where is Beauxbatons?

During the feast celebrating the arrival of the students for the Triwizard Tournament, Rowling chose to serve "bouillabaisse". This is a very typical fish soup from the southeast of France and is not really eaten elsewhere, at least not as a common dish. It is likely, then (though an assumption) that Beauxbatons is on the Mediterranean coast of France (maybe by Marseilles) which could explain as well why the students of Beauxbatons are so cold in Hogwarts. -- thanks to Amyll.

So there are Magic schools all over the globe but imagine how hard it would be for JKR to try ad learn the slang and accents for every country if students from all over the world went to Hogwarts. It was much better having only the three schools, any more would have made the books too cluttered with useless dribble.

Personally I would have liked to see an Australian in the books but since the story is set in England/Scotland/Ireland/Wales there was no need to add any other places in. I would assume that since France and Northern Europe (?) are close to England, JKR chose to have schools from there to compete in the Tri Wizard Cup. And those accents are easy to mimic. biggrin.gif

I agree. Witches and wizards are peculiar and necessary characters in every culture's social/religious organization. Magic is the first form of science, the first way in which human beings tried to explain the world... that's why witches are everywhere in the world.

Hm, very good theories! I agree with both of you, Triad and witchmom. I think witches and wizards are all over the world...

Since it's the very best school of witchcraft, would you guys think that there could possibly be other branches of Hogwarts all over the world, with the main branch being in England? Or do you think there are different schools in other countries?

I would like to remind everyone of the itinerary Dumbledore intended to follow after he had finished school. He mentioned places all over the world were he wanted to interact with foreign wizards and study magical creatures. I am proud to report that Greece is mentioned as an important destination as to observe chimeras. They are mythical creatures, very common in our mythology. laugh.gif
