Mike Grambridge and the Undiscovered World

Chapter one

Mike Grambridge stepped under the yellow crime scene tape. To his left was his partner Alex Strife. Alex was in his early thirties, his hair was long and slicked back, and his beard reminded mike of a general in the confederate Army. Mike on the other hand was twenty-six, his hair was average in length and jet black.

To his right were two bodies. One was male, the other female. He knelt down beside them and pulled out a tape recorder.

“Two bodies, the male appears to be late forties, the female is in her late teens. Possibly related. Maybe father and daughter. No signs of blood or a struggle. It appears as though they… just fell over and died.”

Mike stood up and walked over to a cabinet that stood near by. On the top was a small eight by ten photograph. A small boy and the dead teen girl smiled up at him. Then everything around him ceased making noise. He turned. Alex and the other cops near Mike stood frozen. Then something happened. It was though someone hit rewind on everything around him. The cops walked backwards, into their cars, they took off in reverse towards the station. The sun went down and the moon came up. And the bodies… they started to move. Suddenly they both sprang up. There was a flash of green light.

Then everything went back to normal. Mike tripped and almost fell over as he attempted to catch himself on the cabinet.

“W-What just happened!” He startled out.

“Hey man you all right?” Alex asked, his Boston accent intruding into his r’s. Mike always wondered what a cop from Boston was doing in England.

“No! Something just happened!” Screamed Mike back at him.

“What ya mean man?” Said Alex shrugging, clearly not able to tell if mike was joking or not.

“I- I think I just saw the murder.” Mike said pacing back and forth, his hand running across his chin.

“Look, right there,” he pointed towards a spot on the floor eight feet from the body. “There was a man standing there. Then there was a flash of green light, and these two, “ He gestured toward the deceased. “Dropped like flies. Don’t ask me how I know, I just do.” He said holding his hands up in the air.

Alex, his jaw a little slack, said “Uh. Right. Magical light killed these two. Anyone else have theories as crazy as Grambridge’s over here?”

The other cops shook their heads no, and began to exit the average size cottage, till it was just Mike and Alex. Alex walked over to Mike and shook his head. Alex was short and a wee bit pudgy. He always smelled of tobacco.

“Look Mike. I don’t appreciate the crap you are trying to pull in front of my entire team. Magical lights? The heck is wrong with you! Look man. Things get tough out on the field. We’ve worked together for over a year now. Just get a drink, and relax. It’s got to be the nerves.”

Mike nodded. “Yeah… the nerves.” He still felt uneasy as he made his way to the squad car that got them their. The clean up crew was on site. Alex walked over to them.

“The scene is clear, you can pick up the bodies now.”

Mike felt, that for some reason, there was more to that scene. Something he couldn’t see. He shook his head and sat in the passenger’s side of Alex and his squad car. He laid his head back in the seat with his eyes closed, his hands rubbing his forehead.

Four hours and a ton of paper work later, Mike finally found himself on his way home. Alex was right, he needed a drink. He shook his head, trying to free himself of the image in his head. He pulled in to the parking lot for a convenience store. He walked in the store and passed a red haired man and women. The man appeared to be intrigued by the assortment of gum.

“But Molly, can I just try something new for once!” The man murmured under his breath.

“Oh Arthur what use could you have with this.. this..”
She bent over to read the print on the label.
“Spear made of mint!” She said, her voice strained.

“Well I want to know how these muggles fit a spear into that tiny package without magi-“
The women nudged him as he was finishing the last sentence.

“Please Arthur we must go. Ron is only a baby, and I don’t know if I trust Charlie alone with him in these dark times.”

The women pulled the man away from the display and together they exited the store. Mike went to the liquor isle and grabbed a six pack of beer. He was paying when he heard a loud CRACK. He reached down to his holster and pulled out his standard issue 8mm Bereta.

“Stay down!” He shouted to the women behind the counter. She collapsed, her hands on her head.

Mike Held the weapon, both hand held tightly on it. He crouched over to the main window in the store, using the small brick space between the window and the floor as cover. He peeked over and looked through the glass. The man and woman were gone. No trace of them and no trace of violence. He clicked the safety off the pistol and walked out the front door of the shop. The adrenaline pumping through his veins kept him alert as he walked through the lot.

There was another loud bang and two men appeared out of nowhere. Mike fell back, screaming out an obscenity. The man in back pulled out a long piece of wood.

“CRUCIO!” he shouted, pointing the stick at Mike.

Suddenly Mike felt more pain than he ever had before in his life.

“Enough!” shouted the man in front. “We are not here to kill or torture. The dark lord gave us strict orders. Stun him and be done with him.”

The man in back stepped forward, and shouted “Stupify!” At Mike.

Instinctively, Mike stuck out his hand to block the jet of light heading toward him, expecting the pain from before. The jet of light rebounded off Mikes palm and shot back at the man with the twig in his hand. It hit the man and sent him flying off his feet. The man in front took off the mask that he was wearing. Silver blonde hair fell over his face. He knelt down next to Mike and smiled a cruel smile.

“My name is Lucius Malfoy.”

Chapter two

“Uh… Hi?”

Said Mike looking up at the man called Lucius.

“Tell me, you are no ordinary muggle are you?” Lucius asked him.

“I don’t even know what that is.” Mike choked out.

“Come with me, the Dark Lord can teach you how to use those powers of yours.”

Another bang came from behind Lucius. Lucius sprung up from his crouch and pulled out his own twig. Three men appeared out of nowhere. One of them was Arthur, the man Mike had seen in the store. The other two he didn’t know. They whipped out their wands at the sight of Lucius.

“Who is that Lucius!” Shouted a man with black un-combed hair.

“Just a little friend Sirius.” Lucius replied with a snarl.

“I’m sorry, but friend?” Snorted Mike. “I don’t even know you.”

“Lucius, get away from him!” Snarled the man named Sirius.

Lucius gave a brief smile then he ran fast, sending jets of light out of his stick. He shouted words that Mike could not understand. Sirius and Arthur began to do the same.

“Remus, secure Thellow, make sure he doesn’t get up!” Shouted Sirius. The third man rushed over to the body next to mike. Ropes appeared from his stick binding the man.

To Mike’s right, he could see Lucius fighting a losing battle. Lucius must have realized this, because he at once turned to face Remus and sent another jet of light off towards his back. Mike Held up his hands once again, deflecting the red jet of light. Lucius was gone with another loud crack.

Mike looked around to see Sirius and Arthur looking at him, dumbfounded. Remus stood up and touched Mike’s arm.

“I’m Remus Lupin.”

“Mike Grambridge, pleased to meet you. Now can someone tell me what the heck just happened.” Said Mike in an exasperated tone.

“Well, Mike, you need to come with us. You are now in grave danger.”

“Tell me wh-“ He was cut off as he felt a force pulling him. Mike closed his eyes, feeling nauseous. He felt like he was being squeezed through a tight tube.”

When he opened his eyes again, he found himself in front of a large manor.

“Congratulations Mike, you have just apperated for the first time.” Said Lupin, punching mike on the shoulder.

“Yeah ok.” Mike replied. Then he felt his legs fall out, and he fainted.

When Mike awoke he was lying in a rather comfortable bed. He sat up to see Remus Lupin sitting in an armchair at the foot of his bed. He sat forward a little.

“Now, Mike this is going to be a lot to take in. So I’m going to put it in simple terms for you. The two men you encountered today are part of a society called ‘Death Eaters’. Lucius Malfoy is very close to you know who a-“

Mike held up a hand to stop Lupin. “I’m sorry, You know who… who?”

Lupin sighed. “His name is Voldemort. Never speak his name again. Never. He is the most evil being on the planet. His skills in the dark arts are greater than all but Albus Dumbledore. And now is where we get to the good part. Mike, you have just encountered the world we try to keep hidden. You have discovered the wizarding world.”

“Right. Wizards.” Mike wanted to believe that it was all fake, but some how he knew Lupin was telling the truth. “So the sticks?”

“Wands. But we noticed something. You cast a shield spell. Without the use of a wand, and one strong enough to repel a curse from Lucius at that.”

“I did that twice today.” Mike stated.

“Really?” Lupin sat forward as far as he could. “You see you are different. You do not need to use any form of physical movement or incantations to use magic. Many wizards can do magic without speaking or without using wands, but to do any spell without one is un-heard of. It’s clear you-know-who will try to get to you. Use you as a weapon. Sirius is now sending a letter to Albus Dumbledore. He will teach you to harness and control your new power.”

“That’s great and all, but I can’t have any special powers. I’m a cop. I was born in Utah, and I moved to England before I turned two. You must have the wrong guy.”

“Really?” asked Lupin, clearly amused. “See that broken pot right over there?” Lupin flicked his head toward the right hand corner of the room.

“Uh yeah.” Said Mike, straining his head to look at the shattered pot.

“Concentrate. Just focus on it fixing. Imagine each piece fitting together.” Suggested Lupin.

Mike did so, unsure of what this would prove. As he thought, it happened. Each piece of the pot began to fit together until it was as good as new.

“Woah.” Mike gasped, amazed at what he had done.

“Settle down. Make yourself at home. Dumbledore will be here on Friday. You have a good three days to get well adjusted to the wizarding world. I’ll go get you some light reading.” Lupin stood, and walked out of the room, closing the door behind him.

Chapter three:

Lupin hadnt been gone for more than twenty minutes, when the door to room Mike was staying in burst open once again. Remus came into the room, five books and a tray of food in his arms. Mike stood up and walked over to him, taking the tray of food and putting it on the bed.

“Thanks.” Remus muttered, dropping the books into an armchair.

Mike could see the title to the book on top. “A History of Magic.” Mike read aloud. “Well golly gee that sounds fun! Thanks Remus, for the food.”

Lupin waved his hand. “It was Molly not myself. You are staying in Molly and Arthur Weasley’s house. You already met them. The red haired couple. Molly is out, it’s just Arthur, James and myself. Come downstairs when you are ready.” He left Mike with a bow of the head, a brief smile and a wave.

Mike turned to the plate of food, never as hungry as he had been at that moment.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

A short while later, Mike found his from his room on the first floor landing down to the kitchen area, where Arthur Weasley sat holding a package of spear mint gum.

“I just don’t get it.” He muttered under his breath. He reached into a rucksack and pulled out Mike’s firearm. “Now what can this do?” He clicked off the safety and pulled the trigger. The gun went off with a bang. Arthur fell out of his seat, and a stack of plates exploded to Mike’s right

Arthur got back up in his chair and looked at Mike. His face burst out in a grin.

“That’s BRILLIANT!” He laughed out.

Mike stared dumbfounded at him. Arthur aimed at the window and pulled the trigger again. Another bang, and the window shattered. Mike shook his head and ran up to him, pulling the pistol from his hands.

“Are you mad!” Mike shouted at him, ejecting the clip and putting it in his pocket.

“Ah don’t worry about it. Repairo!” he shouted, and with a flick of his wand the dishes, and window, repaired themselves. The front door swung open and a man with jet black, untidy hair, glasses and bright blue eyes entered the room.
“Arthur what was the noise!” James Potter shouted.

“Oh nothing, just Mike’s little muggle device thingy. It’s alright James, everything is fine.”

James lowered the wand he was holding out and gave a curt nod to Arthur. He turned his attention to Mike. He held up his hand.

“James Potter, pleased to meet you.”

Mike shook hands back. “Mike Grambridge.”

“Right. I heard about you. At any rate, you and I are going to be seeing a lot of each other. Remus and I have been assigned to protect you for a while, at least until Dumbledore gets you trained up enough.”

Mike nodded.

“You know, you are taking this better than I would have thought.” James said, a look of suspicion on his face.

“I honestly don’t find any of this strange.” Mike stated calmly.

“Right. Well I have to go keep watch for Molly. It’ll be getting late soon.” James turned to leave but Mike stopped him.

“Hey, where did Remus go?”

“Oh Lupin? It’s his time of the month.” He smirked and looked up at the full moon through the kitchen window as he walked out the door.

Mike had a rather confused look on his face.

“Mike, you had better get some rest. Tomorrow, James and I will be escorting you to Diagon Alley. There you will get your first true taste of the magical world.”

Mike nodded and went up to his room.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Lucius Malfoy stood frozen in a long corridor. Stone pillars to each side were the support for the high arch ceiling.

“YOU LET THEM GET AWAY!” Lord Voldemort screamed at him in a terrible voice. He whipped out his wand and aimed it at Lucius.

“CRUCIO!” He shouted, dropping Lucius to the floor. Lucius writhed and screamed in pain. Voldemort tortured him like this for thirty seconds before stopping.

“Lucky for you Lucius, you are worthy to me. But you Thellow,” He looked up at the scrawny thin man a few feet away, “Are worthless to me.” With a flick of his wand he sent Thellow skywards. He sent him rocketing toward the right pillar. Thellow smashed into it, his right arm shattered. Voldemort slammed him back and forth between the right side, and left side pillars. Each time the sound of bones breaking was audible. Voldemort slammed his wand toward the ground and Thellow smashed down to the floor, dead. His body was broken and destroyed.

“Lucius, clean that up.” Voldemort said, already with his back to the body, as he left the room.
