Hi - I'm new to the forums, have only read 1-6 but planning to read DH soon. I saw the HBP in IMAX today which was awesome but have a few lingering questions - I'm sorry if these sound dumb or have already been answered elsewhere on the forums.
So...
-In the movie, the Burrow burns down and no one performs the Aguamenti spell to prevent permanent damage - so, where do the weasleys live, then, in DH? As this doesn't occur in the book, it would seem that DH the book doesn't need to deal with this. But...then how will DH the movie reconcile this? I dunno...
-What was so special about the vanishing cabinets, besides allowing the Death Eaters into hogwarts? Isn't it just a way around the "no apparating within hogwarts grounds" rule - doesn't seem worthy of Malfoy's whole secret build-up. Although I loved the imagery in the movie of the apple bitten and the dead bird...eerie...
-Why is Snape as the HBP so important? The book just gave Harry a bit of a leg-up in potions, and the Sectumsempra curse, which Snape healed on Malfoy in a minute. What is the bigger significance?
-All of the necklaces of importance are confusing me..so there was Merope's (this is book territory now) which is also Salazar Slytherin's, and now the horcrux?, but then there was the cursed one that Katie Bell was supposed to deliver to Dumbledore...in the book, I mixed these up, but in the movie they were clearly shown to be two distinct necklaces...is the latter correct? Is it just a coincidence that two necklaces play important roles in this entry? Also....the one that Merope sold to Borgin & Burke's for 10 galleons - was that the horcrux or the cursed one? Ahh I am so confused lol
And finally (bear with me - i am a noob haha) I got the impression that the mysterious "R.A.B." was a GOOD character, aka not on Voldy's side, because it said the person intended to DESTROY the horcrux, meaning kill a piece of Voldy's soul as harry was trying to do. Am I correct in this assumption?
So I realize that in answering some of these questions, references to DH might have to be made, and I really don't want to be spoiled so could you just say - "will find out in DH" or something?
Thanks so much!
1. Well, although I believe this scene was absolute rubbish and unnecessary, as long as the fire wasn't started with dark magic, hen they could just do a few spells and the pace would be good as new (well almost). I really don't know how David Yates plans to fit all of this together, but I'm hoping he doesn't mess it up.
2. Basically, the only role the vanishing cabinets played was that that was how the deatheaters were supposed to get into Hogwarts. Throughout books 1-5 we hear snippets about the Vanishing Cabinet, s we know what it is. In the book, we don't realize what Draco is doing until the very end. I believe that when we find out about how the Vanishing Cabinet was able to transport the deatheaters into Hogwarts, it was supposed to be that "Oh my gosh, I knew that!" kind of moment. Sort of like when a teacher asks a question, and you rack your brain trying to figure it out, and when they finally tell you the answer you realize you knew it all along, but never thought that THAT could be the answer (if that makes any sense

).
3. I don't really know the answer to this one. Sorry lol.
4. Okay, so I'll start with Meropes. Merope's necklace was the horcrux. It had the emblem of Salazar Slytherin on it. When her father went to jail, she took of with it, and after Tom Riddle Senior left her when she was pregnant, she sold the necklace at Borgin & Burkes for money. Later on, Voldemort goes to work at Borgin & Burkes, I think he either takes it or buys it. One or the other (I don't have my book with me at the moment). Then he turns it into a horcrux, which is why it's important.
The cursed one was from Borgin & Burkes that Draco used to try and kill Dumbledore with. That's really the only importance it has.
5. This one I cannot answer for you. You'll eventually find out in DH.
Hope this helped!
