Nine Months, 2 Weeks, Three Days

Remus Lupin met Nymphadora Tonks on March 31, 1976. Nine months, 2 weeks, and 3 days later, he knew he was absolutely in love with her. The only problem was, she had just dumped him.

"Dora," Remus pleaded. "Come on, don't do this to me. I... I want to stay with you, so badly. Please... just... don't leave me." His chin was wobbling, and he looked near tears.

Nymphadora looked at him, tears in her own eyes. "Remus, I can't. We can't... You refuse to ever acknowledge me. I put up with it for nine and a half months, and I refuse to do it any longer. I'm... I'm sorry." She put a hand on his cheek, smiling softly. "I wish I trusted you enough to stay with you."

She walked away, shaking her head.

Remus stared after her. These words, however simple, had felt like a knife in his heart. He felt a tear escape and sat down, letting them fall, not caring. His heart was breaking. But he knew she was right; he hadn't paid enough attention to her, not nearly the amount that she deserved. She was beautiful, stunning in her natural form, but as he looked back, he realized that he had never told her that. Not seriously, anyway. He began to rock back and forth. He was a complete fool, he knew that; only a fool would have given up someone like her to 'look cool'.

Sirius walked up to him then, looking concerned. "Mate, what's wrong?" he asked sympathetically. Remus just looked at him, shaking his head. Sirius sighed. "Is it Nymphie?"
Remus glared at him. "You know that it is, and anyway, why do you have to call her that? God, Padfoot, you're so inconsiderate!"

Sirius stood up, hurt on his face. "Well, Moony, I'm sorry for trying to help. I mean, I'm sorry for trying to be a GOOD best mate. You know what? If that's how you're going to be... Screw it. Bye."

Remus glared at him as he left, then sat back down. He felt, in less dramatic terms, that his whole world was tumbling down; his grades had been slipping recently because he was with Dora, Dora had dumped him because he hadn't been paying attention to her, he hadn't been paying attention to her because he wanted to be with his mates a bit more, and now Padfoot hated him as well.

Remus wanted to kick himself. Once again, the hurt flowed up. He'd been so angry at her, but now all he could feel was pain. She was his world, the one bright thing in his thunderstorm of a life, and now he had to go on like nothing was wrong. He shook his head. No. He had to fight for her.

Remus got out of Potions the next day, feigning vomiting (Thank God Sirius had taught him that spell), and looked for the class Dora would be in--Fifth year Charms. He found it, and as he walked in, Flitwick looked up at him, startled.

"Why, Mr. Lupin!" he squeaked, almost falling over. "Whatever brings you into this room, now? Don't you have another class?" Remus nodded. "Er... Could I talk to D-That is, Nymphadora?" he asked shakily.

Flitwick nodded. "Certainly," he responded carelessly, and released Nymphadora, who looked angry as she walked out of the classroom with him.

"What do you want?" she asked angrily, her eyes flashing.

Remus took in a breath. It was now or never.

"I have something to tell you," he stated slowly. "I... I know you may not feel the same... But... I found myself thinking after... After we broke up, and I realized something very important." He waited for her to say something, but her jaw was set. She wasn't bailing him out of this one.

He breathed in a long breath. "I... I love you, Dora. I'm in love with you. I know I don't want to be separated from you. Uh, ever. Because... I... I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Can you ever forgive me for being the world's biggest idiot?" He looked at her pleadingly.

Nymphadora just stared at him for a moment. Then, a small grin spread over her face. "You... you do?" she asked, excitement in her voice.

Remus nodded shyly. Get a hold of yourself, Lupin, he told himself sternly. "Is there any way you'd ever... consider..."

Dora threw herself on him, cutting off the rest of his words. He backed up, falling against a wall, and he grinned against her lips.

When they broke apart, she only had one thing to say. “I love you, too. Remus… You’ve made me happier then I’ve ever been before. Thank you,” she added in a whisper, and he grinned in response.
