I don't like all the house rivalry at hoqwarts. Wouldn't it be nice if there was no Gryffindor vs Slytherin. Just because the founders were enimies doesn't mean hte house members need to fight. In my opinion, both houses are BRILLIANT!

Well, in a way, it was just set upon them by their ancestors and it's what expected. I know that there are.. eight middle school in our county, and the rivalry between my old one and this other one has been going on since forever ago; my parents even went through it.
So, sometimes old habits die hard. It's peer pressure in a way, but not really, if you understand what I mean.

It would have been wonderful for them to have peace but everyone whether magical or muggle is different and never can everyone's wishes come true, no matter how wonderful this would be.
There's also an emotion which is called pride present in every human being which divides us at the best of times. Someone will refuse to shelf their pride to join a cause they think beneath them or which they refuse to see the good in rather like Slytherin himself. I'm not being to be biased here, rather point out that Gryffindor and Slytherin's pride got in in the way of their work relationship.

I think the rivalries between the houses are great. I mean, I know my high school has a rival school who we hate and it is always so much fun to go to play against each other, its just so intense; its also fun for the fans to go and they yell at each other. Since there is no other school for them to compete against it's natural that they would have rivalries within the school. It really does make things like quidditch matches more fun.

I agree with lancelot. It would make quidditch matches awfully dull if there was no rivalry between houses. I know it would make life a lot easier and there would probably be a few less duels if there was peace between Gryffindor and Slytherin but it would also be a lot easier if there was peace between Aurors and Death Eaters but I can't see that happening any time in the near future, whether The Dark Lord is alive or not. And its sort of a tradition. And some Gryffindors and Slytherins just genuinely don't like eachother. Take Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy for example. They became enemies before they were even sorted. Even when Harry's children go to Hogwarts, the rivalry is refered to. As much as the peace would be good, I don't think it's very likely.

I think rivalry between schools/houses is something present in all institutions of that kind. Both in my old and new school there are rivalries of this kind. And even though you openly 'hate' eachother, I don't think there are many who actually do. I have a lot of friends that attend my school's rival school, and we don't hate eachother. It's more like a fun competition than an actual war, and if faced with something bad we would probably unite to fight for the same cause.
I think Slytherin and Gryffindor would do the same, even if the Slytherin mentality would probably drive more of their people not to fight, it wouldn't have anything to do with the Gryffindors.

I don't think there's a problem with any of the rivalries between the Houses and that it's probably even good for the students. A little competition usually sharpens your abilities and isn't that what the House Cup seems designed for? Encouraging competition?
I do think that the Gryffindor and Slytherin rivalry is probably a little more heated than it ought to be, though. I think that the rivalries should be more like how they are between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw (as far as we can tell). There is a friendly kind of rivalry between those Houses. Nobody wants to really like hurt the members of the other House or anything, but there is a competition to get those House points. I guess it's kind of like the difference between working really hard to gain your own House points or working really hard to make the other Houses lose points, if that makes sense. It's all in how you use the emotions the rivalry stirs up.
