Sirius: A Halloween Adventure

-CHAPTER ONE-

Sirius awoke to the deliciously familiar aroma of baking pumpkin wafting around the dormitory. He rolled over and the sky beyond the window was still dark; a hint of storm still in the air. Sirius stepped nimbly out of bed, his lithe form casting slender shadows on the cold stone walls, and he dressed against the shivering chill of the room. The raging wind outside battered against the thick stone walls, the rain lashing against the window panes. Sirius turned his back on the howling gale and made his way across the room.
'Hey,' Sirius leaned over a tousled mop of messy black hair. 'Hey, Prongs, wake up!' James rolled over and grunted.
'Wassup, whossat?' he grumbled, evidently having been awoken from a particularly pleasurable slumber. Sirius suddenly yanked away his bedclothes and roared with laughter as James flailed wildly about for them.
'Oi! Give them back! It's freezing!'
'Well you know what to do then!' Sirius shouted, roaring with laughter. James cursed as he felt on his bedside cabinet for his glasses. At the other end of the dormitory a yawning, bleary-eyed head poked over the covers and Remus stared at them in the dim light of the waning embers.
'Oh come on, guys, it's Halloween, do you want to spend the whole day in bed?' Sirius snorted. He stared incredulously as they one by one fell back asleep, James apparently not lamenting the absence of his covers. He shook his head and wandered out of the common room. Perhaps he ought to take a stroll through the castle, if he was lucky he might even bump into Snivelly. But... nah, that greasy git was probably lazing about in bed, likely to do so until lunchtime. He delved into his pocket and pulled out a scrap of parchment.
'I solemnly swear I am up to no good,' he said, tapping the parchment. At once a network of delicate lines spread over the sheet and Sirius lit his wand to peruse it. As he had guessed. The tiny dot labelled 'Severus Snape' was nestled comfortably in its dormitory in the dungeons.
The common room was empty; hardly surprising at this early hour. Sirius lamely kicked out at a table leg. He was so bored and the others were no fun, lying around in bed.

At that moment, a door opened upstairs. Sirius flung himself into a chair beside the freshly stoked fire, pretending to be asleep. Dainty footsteps drew nearer and a gentle voice broke the silence.
'Sirius? Is that you?'
He turned his head, for he recognised and welcomed the voice; Lily Evans stood beside his chair in a pink fluffy dressing gown, matching slippers covering her feet. He smiled as she sat in the armchair next to his.
'What are you doing up so early?' she asked. Sirius shrugged and stared into the fire.
'Couldn’t sleep, I guess.' he replied after a moment.
'Me neither.' Lily let her gaze wander in the firelight. Sirius smiled as Lily looked back at him and shifted nervously in his armchair. He couldn't help staring back at Lily, her red hair glinting like garnets in the light of the dancing flames, garnets clustered around her emeraldine eyes which sparkled brightly, her smile warmer than the blaze in the fireplace.
'Is something the matter?' Lily wore a look of concern. Sirius shook himself.
'Er... nothing, nothing at all.' he replied, blushing deeply. No, he thought, this wouldn't do at all. She was James's girl, she was out of bounds. No, Sirius thought, he couldn't let his own attraction get in the way of his friendship with James.
Lily had started to speak again and Sirius smiled politely.
'You're much nicer when you aren't hanging around with the others,' she mused. Sirius laughed quietly.
'What makes you say that?' he retorted.
'Well, it's things like cursing people all the time, I mean, I know you don't do that anymore, but generally you're a lot politer and considerate, the way I like you best.' Lily explained. A swarm of butterflies were roused to chaotic flight in Sirius's stomach as he heard her words. She thought positively about him, she actually said she liked him. But the smile faltered as he remembered that Lily was taken, by his best friend, no less. Sirius leapt up, deciding, that if he stayed, something might happen that he would sorely regret.
'I... uh... sorry, need to go,' Sirius mumbled but Lily was on her feet too.
'Sirius, what's wrong with you?' she said quietly. She stood closer to him. Too close to behave himself now.
'It's just that... remember that day when we met in Diagon Alley, before we started at Hogwarts, you smiled at me and, well,' Sirius fumbled for the right words, staring off at the wall.
'I know what you want to say'’ Lily spoke kindly. 'But I'm with James and I love James. Sirius, you're a very sweet and caring person but you have to let this go.'
'But I can't! You say it likes it's the easiest thing, have you ever had to do it?' Sirius replied angrily. He regretted his harsh tones at once and mumbled an apology. Lily began to speak but Sirius silenced her with a kiss that she did not reject but ended as the dead weight of the situation fell upon Sirius and he strode from the common room into the darkened halls beyond.

Chapter 2

Striding down the mostly unpopulated corridors of Hogwarts castle, looking like a terrible storm cloud about to unleash its driving rain onto anyone who was unlucky enough to cross his path, Sirius headed towards the great hall for an early breakfast. He hoped the warm scones and fresh pumpkin juice might take his mind off his current troubles. What had just happened? Had he actually kissed Lily? How could he have done that to James?

These thoughts and more kept circling his brain in a never ending litany of self accusations. Admittedly, he had always had feelings for Lily, but he knew he had lost his chance with her once she and James became an official couple earlier that semester. Silently cursing himself for not having had the courage to ask Lily out before James did, he slammed himself down at Gryffindor table and reached across a third year studying her charms book, not caring a lick about his lack of manners.

“Excuse me is an acceptable form of table etiquette you know.” The girl remarked without looking up from her book.

“Mmm.” Sirius grumbled as he poured out the pumpkin juice and bit into a piping hot raspberry scone. He was usually a much more pleasant dining companion and he knew it. There was nothing for it today, in any case. However much he would have liked to have been his usual jocular self, Sirius couldn’t tear his mind from the image of Lily before the firelight. He could still feel his lips on hers. The eager, welcoming response with which she had answered his kiss made him flush scarlet and he felt a trickle of perspiration working its way down his brow. Leaving his breakfast half eaten, Sirius pushed himself away from the table with a violent shove and headed once more back into the frigid corridors of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The castle was waking and students were beginning to fill the halls. Sirius took a left at the top of the third floor stairs and headed down a mostly unknown passage. It was a shortcut that he and James had found second year and it had proven beneficial in avoiding teachers and older Slytherin’s alike. Today, Sirius just wanted to be alone with his thoughts and try to sort out this mess he and Lily had gotten themselves into. Before he knew it though, he had come to the end of the hidden passageway and his feet unconsciously carried him to the seventh floor of Gryffindor tower, whether out of habit, guilty conscience, or a need to revisit the scene of the crime he didn’t know. However, he wasn’t the least bit surprised to find himself staring at the portrait hole and muttering, “ Schokolade.” to the fat lady who admitted him into the Gryffindor common room.

Once inside, Sirius fell into the chair he had occupied earlier that morning. It was soft and comfortable from years of use and he stretched to his full length in it, draping his long legs over one of the arms and resting his dark mane upon the other . The sun was now streaming in through the tall windows, warming the room, and the fire in the grate was still burning brightly. Thoughts of Lily drifted before Sirius’ eyes as his lids grew heavy.

James sauntered drowsily down the dormitory stairs and into the now bustling Gryffindor common room, still wearing his pajamas and rubbing the sleep from his eyes. Unconsciously running his hands through his disheveled hair and ruffling it up, he plopped down into the chair that Lily had occupied a mere hour ago and gave the newly awakened Sirius a quizzical, searching look. “What’s wrong with you? You look positively ill.”

“Not a thing!” Sirius shot back immediately in an unnaturally high voice. Then realizing his demeanor was not at all appropriate for James’ question, he added, “Um, just thinking I’d like to find Snivelly…see what the slimy git’s up to.”

With a knowing smile, James sprung to his feet. “Excellent! Just give me 30 seconds to dress.”

“Rouse Wormtail while you’re at it!” Sirius called after him. He breathed a sigh of relief as he watched his best friend dash up the stairs, bumping into a timid first year in his ascent and making enough noise to wake the lazy Slytherins down in the dungeon. Thank goodness James hadn’t noticed Sirius’ bizarre reaction to his inquiry. Sirius was treading on thin ice. What had he been thinking, kissing Lily like that, as though she were…his? Sirius wasn’t sure, but the one thing he did know for certain was that he was sick of thinking about it. He needed some good sporting fun to take his mind off of things. And he needed it now!

Chapter 3

James grabbed the back of Sirius’ robes and pulled him behind a large stone gargoyle in the courtyard. “Hold up a minute Padfoot. Would you get a load of that!” James was nearly on the verge of tears of mirth at the sight.

Sirius snorted in amusement. “Somehow Prongs, that doesn’t surprise me,” he said while attempting to hide a snigger.

Severus was smoothing down his hair with his hands as he glanced longingly at a group of girls that were passing. He cleared his throat and waved timidly. The two could clearly hear the girl nearest him make a disgusted noise in the back of her throat. She then proceeded to flip her blonde hair and flounce haughtily away as the girls headed towards the unseen Gryffindors.

“Should we show ole’ Snivelly how it’s done, Prongs?” asked Sirius as he attempted to smooth his hair as Severus had done just moments before.

“You do it, Padfoot. I can’t, Lily would kill me if she found out.”

Sirius felt a pang of jealousy mixed with guilt surge through him at the mention of his best friend’s girl. He pushed it down and said, “Man, she has you completely whipped.” He placed a consolatory hand on his James’ shoulder and shook his head in mock disappointment.

“Whatever,” James responded while pushing his friend away from him. “Go get ‘em tiger. I’ll go watch from over there.” He motioned to a bench a couple yards away and hurried off to take a seat for the show.

Sirius smiled and stepped out from his hiding place seconds before the girls reached them. He leaned his shoulder casually against the gargoyle with his arms folded across his chest. “Morning, ladies,” he said as he straightened then bowed gallantly. “Aren’t you all looking lovely today,” he complimented.

He stole a glance at Severus who was watching the interchange with a look of mingled defeat and fury. Though he usually preferred brunettes to blondes, he purposefully took hold of the blonde girl’s hand and brushed it with a kiss. He gently lowered it and stepped aside, bowing them on.

The girl that had snubbed Severus giggled coyly and looked over her shoulder as she passed. Sirius winked at her then took her by the elbow and pulled her back to him. He kissed her heartily then released her. She nearly stumbled as she flew back to her friends, fanning her face as she did so. Together the girls giggled until they were out of sight.

“Enjoy the show, Snivelly?” James asked Severus, a cruel smirk plastered on his face.

Severus’ head jerked around at the familiar nickname. He shot to his feet and looked from James to Sirius then back again. James was to his feet now and was walking towards him. Severus pulled out his wand and watched as his two worst enemies closed the gap between them.

James and Sirius likewise had their wands raised, ready for anything. “Too bad Wormtail and Moony couldn’t join us, eh, Padfoot?”

“I don’t mind, Prongs. This way there’s more for us,” laughed Sirius. “Now, Snivelly… You didn’t actually think you had a chance with any of those girls, did you?”
