There are many Myths about why people ship the way they do. I am conducting this poll to see what if any truth there is behind some of these myths. Are all Herons Ron fanatics and all Harmony's Hermione fanatics ect ect. I hope that any one that participants in this poll will help in getting others to do so as well. Most likly all of the OOC-ness found in OOTP. But I ll say, they can be seen as natural, because a month was given before we read anything, so we do not see the changes in each character (Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, Sirius, Molly, and OF COURSE Harry.)

Ooh, interesting question. Tough one. Erm...I'd probably go with envy. Harry is envious of Ron because of his family, Ron is envious of Harry because of his fame, Sirius is jealous and resentful of everyone because they have freedoms that he doesn't. The sad thing is that none of them realise that they all have things that others would be envious of too, but they never see it. Self-absorption...that'd be another one. Then you could add the Malfoy's the list.

If we're talking fandom-wide, not just here, probably Snape/Harry. It has a huge following, and I love the pairing, but I know it ain't ever gonna happen.

Trivial, if any at all. Definitely subplot - for JKR to use 'love' the way I think she intends to, she'd have to build relationships over a lot longer than just the remaining two books. And not use hormonally challenged teenagers as pivotal characters...

I don't think any have been yet. The slash ships are probably the most likely to be sunk pretty soon. Nothing less than a literary tragedy.

Books definitely. Direct-from-official-JKR's site quotes. Not so much movies, even though she did have a mild input into them. Always go from the original text - directors colour films with their own individual interpretations.

All the books are filled with subtleties, IMHO. It's been there all along. Right from the moment Hermione spoke to Harry. She didn't care about his seeing his scar - she wasn't impressed and awed by his fame the way Ron was.

I had a 4 year relationship with a girl who I found only mildly attractive and could not stand her personality in the beginning, but eventually I had to laugh. She was alot like Luna. Excentric.

where H/G and N/L are concerned, yes.

Well, I believe H/Hr fans want that relationship to happen so badly that they allow their desires to dictate their reason, rather than allowing their reason to prevail. I think they hoped for that relationship from the beginning, saw that JK was building toward R/Hr and started looking for clues for their ship to reassure themselves. I think the clues for my other ships are rather vague and subtle. If it were not for JK's comment that Neville and Luna would never date, I'd still be advocating my preferences.

Didn't you already ask this question? I don't understand. If you mean what ships will never even be mentioned or given clues toward, I'd have to say Snape/Hermione.

Books. Only the books. JK's quotes are generally so ambiguous they can be taken to mean anything. However, I believe when she says something straight out it should be taken as fact. Such as the nix on N/L. It is in trying to prove her quotes say what they say where difficulties arise. The movies can be used to draw parallels to the books simply by what they include or exclude. For example, I doubt the "Talking Head" from the movie is going to have an impact on the story, and I doubt Peeves, who was cut from the films, will either.

The books. I never even saw the first movie until I had finished reading all the books.

There is one important question you forgot to ask.

I am MALE.

While sex should not matter as far as equality of rights goes, there is no denying that men and women view the world from different perspectives.

It has been my experience that roughly 90% of H/Hr shippers are female, while the R/Hr ratio is much more balanced. I believe this is because many female readers empathise with Hermione more than any other character and want her to end up with Harry, the hero of the story. Whereas most male readers empathise with Harry or Ron more than Hermione, and so do not care who Hermione ends up with, but are happy to accept the relationships JK appears to be building. Also, the female R/Hr's generally empathise most with Ginny or Luna, and so would rather see one of them with Harry.

Speaking of "muddying" the waters, what's with the silly names people give ships? If you want to clear things up, you might try campaigning to call things what they are. Even H/Hr, N/L etc. can be confusing to newcomers. Heron and Harmony make absolutely no sense.

Remus/Sirius, then Harry/Hermione (but to be honest I’m not a big shipper).

For me personally, I believe the only ships, we can be sure are Canon (with any validity anyways) are those ones which have been written about in the books explicitly. I.e. Lily and James or Arthur and Molly
In the case of the only two ships I've contributed to, Remus/Sirius and Harry/Hermione, I believe the former (my 'Primary ship') is almost 'cannon' (once again as much as any ship is going to be) in the sense that the way some people can write and argue the points (in a much more articulate and convincing way than myself) make it seem very likely that Remus and Sirius did have a relationship.
But in the case of Hermione and Harry we know that they have never had that kind of relationship, so until Jo finally makes it so, the ship can never be said to be ‘cannon’, itself, but the speculative clues we can derive from the text in the book’s while are equally not ‘cannon,’ lay the foundations for well-founded theories. So I suppose what I'm trying to say is in both cases, they would be my preference as oppose to my cannon. Absolute Cannon ships IMHO like James and Lily aren’t really that fun to debate as argue for, as there really isn't to much to write home about.

I suppose I prefer the Remus Sirius over the Harry Hermione one, because it's that bit different.

Ooh this is hard. For me It's always going to be between three characters, Neville because he's has such troubles in his life and he always seems to get the short end of the stick, with relation to many of the story-lines he's in, Hermione because she is a refreshing change to most of the other characters in the book, she has strong principles and doesn’t let anyone influence her choices and finally Arthur Weasley, who has to be with out a shadow of a doubt the most funny character in the Harry Potter Series.

I don't Know if this counts, but Norbert, solely because I was truly shattered after the outcome of his chapter in the Philosopher’s stone. Although I thought it was a brilliant twist it was still a bit disheartening. Silly I know, but there you go!

Probably Ron, Simply because I absolute love the characters of Harry and Hermione, I love Ron’s character slightly less.

Medium, Love will be the ultimate force in the books thus far, this is was the case in the Philosopher’s stone, and every book which preceded it, in the Half-Blood Prince and Book seven I believe nothing will change. To quote a Charlatans son 'Love is the Key’ and since Romance can be supposedly derived from love, Romance will at the very least play a medium part in the books, IMHO.

I'm not a huge Shipping fan, generally speaking, and so I now very little about ships I don’t follow, or are in direct conflict with my own, but I believe Hermione and Draco has a few followers, but to be honest I can't see how this could ever work, they hate each other far too much. And Hate is not nearly strong enough word. And Hate that deeply entrenched in a person doesn’t change over night.

Absolutely first and for mostly the books, I don’t think the films can elaborate on the books in any way what so ever. As such I dislike arguments which are based solely on the fact that they were exaggerated in the films. (This is partly because I hate the idea of the films being a forecast in any sense of the word as to what will come in the up coming two books.
The only quotes I pay any heed to are JK official quotes, but even then I don't believe Jo will give anything too important away with the clues she leaves, for one thing they'd spoil all the fun in speculating what will happen.

There are quite a few (all from the books, most are based on unanswered questions, which suggest there might be something between Sirius and Remus, such as why did Remus and Sirius give Harry a joint Christmas Present?, why the 40 line stair? Things left hanging as it where without any particular reasons given. This being said the first I heard about the Remus/Sirius was on this site, so I suppose the origins came from shipping it’s self

My sister gave me the first two copies of the Harry Potter Books and I’ve been entranced ever since. I've never been a big fan of the movies.

"canon" just means a text or medium that everyone can refer to and see exactly the same thing. So evidence taken from the books is written in canon. Infact, the movies are a seperate set of canon, and JK's quotes are a seperate set of canon as well. Though, many of them are taken from written transcripts of televised or video interviews, often with spelling errors, mistakes in which person said what, etc. No two transcripts are exactly alike, so that is the weakest form of "canon." Quotes taken from JK's site, however, can be considered "canon" or fact, as they were writen by the author herself.

(unfortunately most of those are so ambiguous that they can be individually interpreted to mean many different things )

However, when we are talking about "what do you consider canon" I took that to mean "what canon do you consider to be valid for theorizing about the future of the Harry Potter series." Which explains my answer.

Ships that have been confirmed are "canonized." Such as Ginny and Michael Corner, etc. It cannot be argued that they were not dating as it has been confirmed in the books. They also broke up.

The books are the only means by which we can hope to garner clues as to the future of Harry Potter. The movies, however, can be used to confirm or debunk theories simply by what they include or exclude. JK has the power to say, "This absolutely MUST be in the movie." She is also consulted on what can be cut, as well as having final cut on any scene. If it is going to be important in future books, then it will be in the movie.

While Pride can be a great thing, especially intertwined with bravery, I think Harry holds himself too high when he could ask for help or accept that he doesn't have all the answers or is wrong. Instead he blames others, or gets angry etc.

While reading the books it was obvious to me that Harry and Hermione
seemed to be two halves of a whole. It wasn't until I found the fansites that I even realized that other people thought Ron and Hermione could like each other. What a mess. I feel sorry for both of them.

I started reading the Books to my son at bedtime before book 4 came out and we both were instantly hooked. He was in 2nd grade at the time and he became a person who enjoys reading for pleasure. He is now in 8th grade and it is fun to talk about the books after we read them. Now my 16 year old daughter is hooked too so it's almost all in the family!

ONLY THE BOOKS ARE CANON. The movies are embellished. The Interviews are just commentaries, never to be considered canon. Unfortunately, HBP is considered canon.

I liked Harry and Hermione's interaction with each other right from book one. PoA and GoF had their moments. I could see H/Hr happening. OotP is my favorite book, despite the 'all caps' Harry. OotP proved to me that it was 100% H/Hr.

Interesting question. Actually, I don't think JKR includes anything without a reason. I think love, romantic and otherwise will end up playing a large part in Book 7.
