What is a beta?
When a writer writes a story, they are called the 'alpha' who is the first person to see the material/idea/plot to the story. Now, a 'beta', is the second person to see them. It is a standard practise among professional authors to send their work to someone else before letting it out on a large scale such as a fanfic site or forums. A beta will read through them and edit any syntax/punctuation/grammar/spelling errors a writer might have missed. No one is perfect. No matter how many times you have read through your fanfic, it is still possible you might have missed out an error. A beta is the one who is suppose to find such things and correct them for you.

Why is it important to have a beta?
Aside from their main purpose up there, a good beta would give their honest feedback on the story. It is better to hear a constructive criticism personally before the story is released so you can edit them first. They could also see if your story has achieved your goal (is it exciting enough? is the characters canon enough?) and make sure it falls under PG rating.

Tips to be a good beta
1. Always beta in a word processing program with your spellchecker turned on. The writer might have done that as well, so you might not find anything wrong there. You have to then, pay close attention for any typos that are really actually real words ('see' for 'sea', or 'them' for 'then' etc) and any misuse of words (their, there're, this, these etc). That's one of the things a beta does.

2. Word your criticism politely and considerately. No one is perfect here. Not even you. So, respect other people. If a writer finds they are being assaulted by PM, please inform a moderator immediately.

3. Let the writer know if you are too busy to beta their work at any time. Don't keep them waiting without exchanging any words.

To apply for a beta.

Pick one from the list above and contact them accordingly.

A writer should also respect a beta. Don't expect to have an immediate respond. Work it out with your beta and let them know if you'd like to have it back in a certain length of time. Put a disclaimer in your post thanking your beta if you have one. Show them you appreciate their effort.

Respect is a very important thing when conversing through cyberspace, so I am expecting this of everyone. Thanks.

Humor is the only test of gravity, and gravity of humor; for a subject which will not bear raillery is suspicious, and a jest which will not bear serious examination is false wit.

If you've been chosen to be a beta by someone then I would imagine that they would contact you and ask you.

You do not need to have a beta, but for those people whose English skills are less then admirable it is a good idea to get one.

Adding to what Triad has said, the VTM forums do not have official beta readers. We have full faith that everyone wishing to find a beta will chose someone they feel is qualified for the job based on what you've volunteered here. Again, the staff of the VTM forum does not go through and handpick beta readers for the site. It's just a volunteer type thing.

Also, we strongly recommend everyone find a good beta editor. We do not deny stories on the forums that have not been beta edited, but people can usually tell which stories have been improved by their services. Betas really help writers find and fix mistakes and improve the general quality of their writing.

Considering this thread isn't majorly important people seem to whinge alot when a post goes missing. This happens all over the forums people. I am really honest. I will tell you what I think. I'm a really good proof-reader. I proof for my friends essays and such all the time, and I proof mine every time. I've never gotten moe than 2 points off on an essay before. If you email me the story, I'll print it and take it to school, and proof it during a free. Then go home and send the corrections back to you. I'm a really good writer (not to brag of course) and can pretty much always tell when someone might be confused. Also, I'm a good speller. I swear that if I'm the least bit hesitant about the spelling I'll look it up, either in the dictionary, or in a Harry Potter book.

I'd beta most ships - All students (from both the Harry Potter era, and the Lily and James era), but not student/teacher. It's not just because I don't support the ships, I just think they're a bit innappropriate for the ages of some who read these fics.

I have received grades A-A* (American equivalent: A+) for all of my English essays at school, and I'm very particular about using the correct form of they're/their/there and see/sea etc. I usually log in to VTM at least twice a day, so I can be relied on to frequently be available to contact. I love reading and writing fictions, so being a beta would be really great for me.

I would love to be a Beta. I'm Norwegian, so therefore a misspelling or two might slip me, as it would with anyone else. I hardly ever have any issues with grammar at my school, with an A+ in English. I migth be wrong here, but I assume you would be interested in having somone else say their opinion on your story, not just the grammar. I'm what you might call a 'solid writer', so I find a good story depending more on the actual story, rather than a misspelling. I'd love to give people feedback on what they've written, and because I've probably now made this sound like I'm working against myself, I can ensure you that I have a very bright eye for flaws.
If you are interested in having your content looked over aswell; please, let me know. I'll be glad to do it!

Additional note: I am a very good proof-reader and I was the first person my English teacher picked to proof-read a not so well written paper. So far, I haven't ever gotten any grade lower than an "A" in English on any report card. I love to write and always have millions of ideas in my head. I am very good a giving suggestions when people are having trouble writing a certain part of a story. I am also very honest when it comes to reading through papers. If I don't think that something sounds good, I will point it out but, in a nice way, so that the writer is not offended. Since the Harry Potter book series is over, I read a LOT of fanfiction and I would absolutely LOVE to beta your stories!
