Which British Actor would you pick to replace Robbie Coltrane if he decides to not play Hagrid in OOTP?

Possiblities could be:

Ricky Tomlinson (The Dad in the Royle Family)
Ricky Gervais (The Boss in The Office)

I don't even want to think about it. I mean, I'm sure they'll find someone great, but at the same time, it would almost feel like he was taking part of the movie with him. He's great as Hagrid.

Personally, from past interviews I've read, I think he's just muddying the waters a little because he's holding out for more money. Cynical, I know, but probably true. The thing is that he knows no one else could really play it like him (although Ricky Tomlinson would be a very good choice, IMHO) and he knows that JKR herself wanted him - he knows he's an essentially figure so I honestly think that he's just trying to stir up a bit of a fan frenzy so that WB will basically offer him anything to stay on in the role.

It's a risky thing to do, because it could always backfire on him - no one is irreplaceable, no matter how brilliant they think they are, there's always someone out there who could do an equal if not better job.

I like Robbie, I've always liked him, but this whole thing just smacks a little of egotism to me.

ues to him being Hagrig that i wouldin't what anny onelse
playing him

Having just watched all the Lord of the Rings super extened editions and all the appendicies. I can only think of John Rhys-Davies. Although there is a lot of old soap opera actors from the past that might be suited.

I think it's going to be more about getting the right voice than getting the right build of someone though. It's amazing what they can do with rubber prophetics.
Princess Dogstar
I think he will do it in the end. Although I'm not surprised he isn't too fussed. I remember Gary Oldman saying how much of a chore they were (the Graham Norton show). Maybe Robbie doesn't like them either.

I think John-Rhys Davies would be a fantastic replacement. And I watched all the extras too. laugh.gif Took me two whole days but I got there wacko.gif

I don't believe it!! Not only have I missed Jason Isaacs on the Graham Norton Show, but now I've missed my Gary too??!!! sad.gif

Man, I've really got to get off these forums and start watching the telly more... wink.gif

John Rhys-Davies...mmm....has the look, maybe, but I'm not too fussed on him as an actor. He was okay in Sliders from what I remember, but not very convincing...he's one of those guys who seems aware that he's acting the whole time, know what I mean?
mugglemomof3
Too bad it can't be an American actor! Oliver Platt would be PERFECT! In fact - when I read the books, he is the face I see. But I agree - with makeup artists being so brilliant these days - I bet we won't really even notice much difference.
lawks_fuster
i think robbie coltrane is really suited for hagrid's role!
and there's no need to change! wink.gif he really deserves the role!
robbie coltrane's very cool!
gryffin_hauz_88
As long as it's not his final answer, I will not react violently. I really like him for the role and I couldn't imagine anyone playing Hagrid.
Sofie
I dont think he will leave. He just havent signed yet, but that means nothing. He had done 4 films he wont leave now... unsure.gif

To me Coltrane IS Hagrid. I really can't imagine anyone else in the role. I've seen John Rhys-Davies in a few other things, he just doesn't have that caring expression of Hagrid, he always looks angry, or like he concentrating on his next line. I think when it comes down to the wire, Coltrane will sign especially if is continuously being nagged by fans not to quit.
BadDobby
When I was reading the Harry Potter books, I've imagined Hagrid very similar to Bud Spencer (an Italian actor playing in action comedies), but he could not play the role, that's not his style - Hagrid is not a funny action hero - and he's too old.

John Rhys-Davies was a great Gimli in Lord of the Rings, and have always seen some similarities in the two roles (even if Hagrid is a giant and Gimli is a dwarf), so I think he would be a great Hagrid.

But of course, Coltrane is the real Hagrid.

I really love Robbie COltrane as Hagrid, he's almost exactly as I imagined him in the book. I would miss him quite a bit if he left...but as everyonesays, "There's always someone just as good out there"
I think John Rhys-Davies would be a fantastic replacement, I can very easily see him playing the part.
Padfoot4Ever
It wouldn't be the same without Robbie. But John Rhys Davies is cool. It would still be weird without Robbie. Lets just hope he stays.
secretkeeper
I always thought that John Goodman looked like a Hagrid. He's big and big and thats Hagrid. I know that will never happen though.

I have no idea who any of you are talking about so when I'm talking to someone and i have to idea what they're talking about I just nod my head. So to what Dana said...

*nods head*

Without Robbie, Hagrid would be no more... Well, he would be, but I can't even come to imagine how it would be seeing someone else playing him, a different voice performing his lines... And he really gets the accent right, doesn't he?
Feeder
Aw man, that would be terrible if Robbie doesn't sign on. I always thought he nailed the part of Hagrid. He is one of just a few actors who get the character nearly perfect.

I agree. I think that if he refused to take part in the movie, he would be taking part of the movie with him. In my opinion he is a great actor, and the best one to play hagrid's role in the movie biggrin.gif

I keep getting John Rhys Davies and and Johnathan Rhys Meyers mixed up so I'm picturing a really, really good-looking, clean shaven Hagrid right now! laugh.gif

But I can't think of any other replacement besides John Rhys Davies, and where else would they find a like, 6 or 7 foot giant with the most awesome voice and that's just perfect for the role?

And hopefully he is going to be in the movie, I'm pretty sure he will be too... smile.gif

I remember when I was like 6 my dad read me the first book (seems like a while ago now) and he did Hagrid with this welsh accent. So then I was so afraid that in the movies Hagrid wouldn't have this accent. But of course in the end - he did. And I was so happy. He played Hagrid just as I had imagined him which was of course, a great relief to me. Without him, for me the movies the will be extremely different. I know that everyone can be replaced, but I don't think anyone can play Hagrid as good as him.

The two I'm thinking of that could be possible would be:
John Rhys Davies
John Goodman
DA_4life
No dawt (sorry can't spell) about it, Robbie is Hagrid!
The films would not be the same without him, he's the only actor (except for Dan, Rupert and Emma) that gets his role!
Lee
I cant' imagine anyone else playing the part. Afterall, he is the one character J.K.R. picked, herself. I think he is perfect for the role and there will never be another Hagrid...

edit:
I just read on another page that Robbie Coletrane is not coming back as Hagrid. this person claims to have heard it on the radio (I am guessing on a British radio station). Has anyone else heard anything about this? Did you hear the spot? Is it true? sad.gif I am hoping that this person just heard that he was thinking about not coming back for the part, not that he had decided not to.
HPMadgirl
I'd be devastated if Robbie Coltrane did not carry on playing Hagrid! I couldn't think of anyone else to play him. I hope he does film the rest of the movies, no one else could take his place and it would probably spoil the whole series of the HP movies!
Princess_Hermione
Howard Stern would be a great Hagrid. Look at his hair and how tall he is. It would be funny if he's Hagrid, if they make him gain a lot of weight. In this one, he can become more family friendly and probably not bring those 'no clothes' women. Still, can't wait for it to come. biggrin.gif
Michael-the-Auror
Howard Stern! hahaha, that'd be hilarious, then there'd be a reason for him to ditch Madame Maxime... naw i highly doubt Robbie's ditching the role of Hagrid.... he's played the part this long, and his role in the sory line is still very large... also i believe he knows how many people will be devastated if he left... like most stuff, i think this is just rumor and will not happen. cool.gif

I agree with Michelle, Robbie Coltrane not signing yet, smells a lot like a hold out to me. I would love to see him stay, but I think we can all agree that the adult actors can be replaced, more so than the teen and young adult actors, so I think if Robbie were smart, he'd make a decision either way. Stay with the Franchise and be grateful, or if as an actor he feels stifled or type-cast (an understandable concern), then he should make a graceful, but definite exit.

Anyhoo, that's my opinion!

I admit being a bit concerned about Robbie's status in the project, but it is early on and hopefully we'll learn something concrete about the casting of Hagrid soon. Afterall, Warner Bros. did confirm four cast members today, there's the possibility they will confirm Hagrid before the fandom gets too anxious.
I agree Suzy, the situation could be like that, I hope not.
I_See_Thestrals
no...ur lying...he didnt say anything...its not possible! I read it myself, but its just media shiznit stiring if you ask me. Or maybe he has another series on UK tele that he wants to do...which really shouldnt deter him coz the money has got to be better in three movies than in a couple of series on tele. oh well, it wont happen, he wouldnt do it to us... sad.gif unsure.gif

He actually acted and looked like I imagined. With the eyes and such. sad.gif
I'm sad. The new one is fine, but he looks more disattached and stuff and more about business then the other one. I hope Hagrid stays, or else I'll be mad. hahaha aak
