I choose Roman Empire, it's the best culture of the ancient world. We got the most of our achievments from there.
Rubedo.Kukai
I choose ancient China because I'm chinese ha ha. Well that and well... we have such a large population, we must have made an impact of sorts.
Nick
Had to vote for the roman empire because i love the program "Time Team" - if you have seen it you'd know why!
Wendelin the Weird
Ancient Greece. Democracy, Art, Naval Warfare....they either invented or perfected it to the best of their resources/abilities. Course the Roman Empire is the obvious choice, they had an impact on pretty much every nation in the world. Just look at all the Romantic/European Languages. Latin based. But the Romans were very much influenced by the Greeks. Anyway, if you want further discussion, PM me, cause otherwise this would be insanly long biggrin.gif
Stardragon
No, i think ancient greece is also a good choice, they influenced Romans very much, but the greatest achievment of Roman Empire was to bring it to life, to dessiminate and to apply it in the life.

Modern civilization, western especially, is made by Roman empire. language, alphabet, republic (though it's greek) and so on. The moral too.

I went with Egypt, because I've always just been fascinated by it, and I think it's amazing to see just how wonderfully creative their civilization was.
taylor3143
I just want to know why atlantis and LuMuria aren't included there.

MOD EDIT : You are not allowed to use netspeak, it should have been "why" instead of "y". Please be more careful next time. Your post has been edited.
Wendelin the Weird
Because they don't exist.

MOD EDIT: Tsk, at least FIVE words please.
Tarak Raskhan
I choose India because so many of their ancient cultures are still alive today as compared to others on the list.
wolfncf2004
I had to vote roman look at the system of government, the architecture , innovations in water transportation, and so forth ph34r.gif

I voted for Egypt, because its one of the greatest civilizations, all the tings they do, and specially the pyramids, and how they build them? I have always had that question, they donīt have the necessary equipment, ans how they put the last one, and evrything related and perfectly balanced, and I read something but I donīt remember exactly and it has a lot to do with earthīs diameter and the distance between the earth and the sun, ad the moon and all that, they all have something related with pyramids, and also the pyramids in Mexico, īcause the only places where thereīs pyramids is: Mexico and Egypt and thatīs quite interersting!
And they both have similarities, they have the same shape (triangular) and they were made nearly the same years, with those civilizations who all disappear... thatīs interesting but weīll have to wait until the scientist discover something about that, because until now they have explanaitons but they donīt know if they are correct so letīs wait until someone take off that doubt out of us!.

Dispite the Romans warpower, i really admire Egypt for such great mathmatic skills and technilogical advancments for their time. (They were so sweet)
spanish_potter
I choose Roman Empire because their architecture was amazing, in my town there are old roman houses
Aristidis
Well i voted the Hellinic Empire cause
1st I am from Greece
2nd I read a lot of comments about Roman Empire and their architecrure.Actualy most of these were copied by the Greeks when Romans conquered Greece (and the hole known world then). If u dont believe me or think that I'm saying all these cause i'm from Greece rhe read Asterix and Ovelix...(the comics...) biggrin.gif
Voldy Fan Girl
I voted for Egypt. It is a lovely place, with its pyramids and statues. Also, all of the treasures in those pyramids make it wonderful too...hee hee. rolleyes.gif
tewkes_ape
What did the romans ever do for us? lol. Nah i have tosay Romans cause they were the only ones to have held onto Britain without eventually relying on it. But wait a tick...we've kinda gone off the Harry Potter subject here!

I'm the sole person so far who has said the Arab Empires actually I talking specifically about the Islamic Empires (Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal 1500-1800). Most people over look their impact but for a long period of time they were one of if not the dominate power in the world. They controlled most of the Northern Africa, large portions of Europe (Greece, the Balkans, Moldova, the Ukraine), the Mid-East, and most of present day Tibet, and India.

Nawrehsuan
I voted for Arab empire (the Islamic empire) because they contolled most of north Africa and the Gulf.etc.
Also, I am a Muslim so I voted for them.
Stardragon
I think it's not right ti vote for some empire, just because you are connected with it. Then I would add USA, and everybody would vote for it, even if it's not ancient???
ted19
I would have to say the Incan empire, for their huge structures, and for their ingenious messenger system. They would have one man run like a mile, and each time he would pass off the message like a relay. So they could get a message hundreds of miles in one day.
secretkeeper
I voted for Other and that other would be the Macedonian Empire, aka Alexander's Empire. Granted that all of the other choices were great in their own respects and still have their infuleneces on life today. Alexander conquired 3/4ths of the known world back then. For those of you who say the movie, it was portrayed wrong. His father was captured by the Greeks and spent 20 years in prision there and learned the Greek ways of philosphy and military tactics and stragy. When he was released, he created a professional army and stopped all imports of goods from the north and made Greece surrender. Once he did that he was murdered. This is when Alexander became king. He set his eyes on the East and defeated King Darius of the Persian Empire in one battle. Alexander never stopped conquiring until he died in Baybalon. After he died so did his Empire.

The Greeks had a very influencial lifestyle that was based on many great nations and leaders. Romans based their beliefs of Greek physicology and physics. The Greeks had only one problem, they were stuborn. Athens hated Sparta and waged 2 wars in which Spartans just surrounded the city and starved the people until they surrendered.

The romans accomplashed many great things. They were the first people to build up and not out. They strived for suprimiacy and if they were in need of money, they would just take over a nation to get it. They created their own downfall by being too big.

I don't know enough about the Empires in the east so I won't talk about them but I know they did great things as well.
TheatreNerd0048
i chose Egypt because i love the Egyptian pyramids. i think they are just amazing. Being so far back in time as they were, they were extremely modern and ahead of their time. Egyptians beat them all.

Although the Greeks were coming right behind them.
Acerbus
It's a close call between Egypt and the Roman Empire...but I'm going to say Egypt. The Egyptian pyramids are just so marvelous, I couldn't bring myself to vote against them.

Also, they really understood geometry. I really don't understand gometry, so I deeply respect anyone who does.
NickHilton
Had to go ancient Greek, Alexander,Heracles,Achilles,Homer,Plato,Herodatus,Aristotle,
Phythagoras,Sophocles,Sochrates.......
Padfoot313
Egyptians by a large margin, not only did they create their own unique language, religion and dynasty, they built their humble uniquely designed pyramids with mathematical and human labor technology far past their time and created a legacy that baffles architects and archeologists to this day. The fact that when you say ancient civilization, Egypt is always the first to be mentioned and always marvelled over is the reason why they are the greatest civilization of all time.

The Romans, Greeks, Asian and etc.. were all stemmed from one another, all have similarities as if their knowledge was passed on. Egypt adopted their own way of life and were seperate from the rest of the world, that is why they stand out.
Darth_Oz
Define greatest, define ancient and define civilisation?

The Aztecs were a bronze-age people living in the 16th Century, administered an empire but their grasp of 'civilisation' is questionable by modern standards.

But then are we civilised for pushing millions to their deaths less than 100 years ago? Or for appeasing Hitler in the thirties, or for appeasing China now? In fact, are we living in the least civilised period of history?

Hmm...

Stéphz
Greeks !!! i totaly love their Myths.
they have great idea's about god , death and ....
biggrin.gif
Hermione_Resilda
I'm gonna have to go with the Roman Empire. It's just amazing how they *almost* conqured the whole of Europe. The tradgeties they had, and all the enemies.. It's just one of the few things that captures my attention.

I would've also voted for Ancient Greece. That's mainly because I'm really into its mythology..
Chacho
The Egyptians. I liked their beliefs

MOD EDIT: one liners are not allowed on the forums..please elaborate more in future posts...also your siggy picture is too large..the max it can be is 400 ACROSS by 150 DOWN! please fix or a mod will do it for you
Kaylyn
I voted for Anciet Greece. I just love everything about it! It is so beautiful, such architect! Not to mention all of their legends and such. It is just so fascinating!
im_confused11
I went with Egypt, because of all of their accomplishments that we still can figure out how they made them, such as the pyramids & such. Also because Cleopatra was one of the strongest female leaders of all time, and is still probably the, or one of the, most well known ancient leaders.
mugglemary
I choose other-I prefer the Israelites and the history of Isreal. The city of Jerusalem has a facinating history. Considering it is the birthplace of Jesus, and founded 3 world religions (both Christianity and the Muslim religion are based on the Torah) I am surprised it wasn't included on the poll.
0maga
Its not particularly ancient but thing England, France and Spain had going 200-300 years ago was cool they controlled over half the planet between them and look at them now beaten back into their own countries by civil wars and political blunders (I am English by the way)!!
George's Girl
i have to say Greece. and not just because i have spent the majority of the last two years studying it... well... perhaps partially because of that, hehe. but truly, the ancient greeks set hte trend for the Romans, who then took over. i admit, the egyptians were great, and achieved heaps, but the greeks managed to pull off loads of stuff! especially during the colonisation period in the 7th century, and then the achievements of tyrants. but i won't go into an essay or anything, i've had enough of them (finished A.History 'Higher school certificate' 3 days ago).

oh, wondering, (im probably losing my head) was persian included in the poll (can't check at the moment) cos that was huge, well for 4 generations. but still, the empire was masive under king Xerxes, even if it diminished after his rule.

no! bad lara! *slaps hand* stop talking about history! hehe.
Salazaar
My vote had to go to Ancient Egypt, they discovered how to perserve bodies for thousands of years with out any technology or anything. They also built the Pyramaids without the freaking Wheel!!! I cant believe that they did that, they also invented math( even though I hate it it is really useful) and astronomy. And a crap load of other things.
priori_incantatem
I chose the Roman empire. They had a wonderful culture, very smart people, and were just so...cool. And, they had most of Europe. (Hence the "empire".)
imtherealluna*
I like the Roman Empire the most and they were very intellegant. I like the Romans. They were cool.
Lei
I would say probably Greece or Egypt. They are both civilizations of great learning and intelligence and much of their teaching still exists today and has founded many of our major religions.

I have to point out though, that there is no evidence to suggest that Atlantis did or did not exist and I myself believe that it did.

Some of the greatest philosophers and thinkers believed it (ie Socrates) and where else did the knowledge that these ancient people have come from. It didn't just spring up over night, it was knowledge that passed down through generations from other places.

And I have read many books that have given me cause to believe that it did exist.

Just my thoughts....

I went with Egypt because i have been fascinated with this time period and civilization since i was little. i have also done many reports and projects on Egypt. one which i can remember was on Ramses II. I would love to visit Egypt and see all the different historical places and monuments there. history is all around the world and that is one place where i would really love for it to come alive! smile.gif
obssdwrg4evr
I went with other- why wasn't the "Great British Empire" put in? hello, it has great right there, they conquered almost the entire world!! ya know, "The sun never sets on the British Empire"? anyway, if not that, i would have gone with egypt, they were great enough to put almost an entire nation into slavery, notice how i said almost, the Levites wouldn't work for the Egyptians, instead they learned Torah. I know all this cause I'm a jew! Then again they got the jews to work by tricking them into it, and also it was part of G-D's master plan for us-the jews I mean- to accept the torah, he showed us how great he was and so we said "Heck yeah!!" when he offered!! well not really we said "we will do and we will hear." but whatever. anyone else here a jew? mellow.gif
Capricorn
If you ask an engineering student there can be only one answer! The Romans, of course!

Gosh, they were absolute geniuses - genii? tongue.gif And obssdwrg4evr - I think the British weren't there cause they weren't exactly an Ancient Civilisation tongue.gif - but they were a great empire, I agree. Still a great nation, though. wink.gif

Anyway, back to the Romans. I've just been to Hadrian's Wall a couple of weeks ago, and it was just amazing - the precision with which it was built and the vast distance it stretched (and still stretches today even) is unbelievable. And I visited some ancient ruins of Roman forts, houses and towns in Britain - awesome! This pipe system still runs after about 17/18 centuries - and has done since then cause no-one has found the source yet!

And here you can really see the vastness of Hadrian's Wall, stretching right across the country... I've been to the Pont du Gard, which floored me even as an 8-year old. These guys were amazing.

Their language was mathematically precise (an indication of their precise and mathematical minds which made them such wonderful engineers) and is beautiful in its conciseness. They were orators of note, with Cicero being the King of Rhetoric, and they invented a justice system that has served as the foundation for modern Law. They ran a funcioning republic more than 2 millenia ago - mathematics, engineering, language and politics, with a dash of philosophy and literary genius - my kind of people! cool.gif

I chose ancient greek civilisation for many reasons. First of all, I am GREEK which means that i am proud of my ancestores. Second, we have set the example for philosophy,mathematics,architecture... Everyone knows Socrates. And medicine is full of greek words. Even fashion follows my ancestores' "style"! We have created democracy, a priceless gift to humanity. I'm not narrow-minded, i accept other culture's contribution but i believe that greek civilisation excedes the others.
hermione rox
i chose ancient egypt cuz they built those cool pyramids.

the greatest ancient civilzation is and always will be Egypt because it is so interesting with the pyramids and with the history behind it all. i watch the History Channel alot smile.gif but i like all of the drawing and everything on the walls they are awesome.
Fall_out_Girl
i dont know really, i think the Mayans were a great civilization. they were good at math...astronomy...they made a calender...

but my world cultures/social studies/history teacher showed us this really creepy video about the Mayan civilation...i was freaked out...

see, the Mayans made predictions according to the stars and advanced mathematics...they were never wrong, the predictions all (well most) came true...and they made a predictioin that the world is gonna end on December 23, 2012 on a Sunday...i was freaked out...and December 23, 2012 is on a Sunday...how could they know that was back then... blink.gif

I loved Egypt, boy was that intersting to learn back when I was in grade 7, I mean, its like they really knew what they were doing, it was intelligent stuff. And the projects were a blast too.
HPFan792
I like Egypt too.I also like the Romans i think they taught us alot.I voted for the Romans in the post.
Cassiopeia
I vote for the Ottoman Empire. They were the only empire that didn't forcibly convert conquered people to the majority religion (Islam), and they actually managed to function for 700 years while respecting the rights of the people to practice their own chosen religion freely. They even had three separate courts systems; one for Muslims, one for Jews and one for Christians. If it weren't for WWI, they might still be here today and much of the Cold War nonsense might not have happened.
Estella
mmm..i would have to say the roman empire..because its awesome like that. but honestly ..it is where lots of ideas and such came from for different tools mellow.gif
